Fingerprint sensor service not working - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was using sensorly, and when I locked the screen it attempted to block it when it asked me a question. My phone vibrated for a few seconds as it fought to overcome the fingerprint screen (and failed)
The fingerprint scanner wont initialize (always ready... but never really). I have to reboot(haven't yet). I can't stop the process/service either... no idea why.
Anyone know of any fixes?

I own a Nokia N810... from my experience rebooting kills the life of your battery with these kinds of devices, and this happens like once every 2 days for me

When you say life of battery do you mean it discharges more energy than it would if you didnt reboot it? Or do you mean the battery itself will die months sooner than it would have.?

Battery capacity lowers over time. Booting that thing clocked it at 400Mhz (the top speed) for about 5 minutes, eating up a whopping 5-20% of the battery.
I noticed my battery lasted less and less every time it crashed and rebooted (it does it so much now that its pretty useless (read: every 10 or so minutes) - thanks nokia)
I have a feeling its the same way with Lithium Batteries too... The battery life is about 40 minutes (if im lucky) and I used to get like a day (of moderate use).

Its impossible to kill the fingerprint reader service. I find that kind of strange.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App

That kind of makes sense. I think the fingerprint service might be an integral part of the system so you can't fully kill the process... Kinda like the android process.
And the comment about battery dying after a reboot faster is true. If you reboot a phone, especially these android beasts with 1ghz+ processors, revs up the processor to max, essentially eating up a large chunk of battery because it would be running at max for 5-10+ minutes. It's crazy. So unless you wanna do a lot of charging, don't restart too much.

I mean like the life of the battery.
New: 16 hours of use
200 reboots later :4 hours of use

Well on one hand I'm happy to see it's not just me. On the other hand it sucks that it consistently happens. For me if I continually run my finger on the scanner on a reboot it will unlock the screen. Then, after a bit (or a few locks) it will stop working and just say "Initializing Fingerprint Scanner" or something along those lines. I ended up disabling it and using a pattern as a screen lock.
For me it happened after installing a ROM that had 1.8.3 as its base. I've seen some previous mentions of the issue I'm seeing and tried their fixes but they haven't worked. I'm eager to see this get fixed. Otherwise I really like the device.

I use widgetlocker and once in a while it won't work when I first wake it up but if I hit the back key and go to the default lockscreen it initializes right away and I can use the scanner.
Holy run-on sentence, Batman! Sorry

I may have been able to reproduce it. Unlock your phone, then immediately lock it, then immeditely wake it. Killed the fingerprint sensor.

Yeah for me, and maybe this is a similar state/situation, I find it really happens when I swipe the unlock screen after waking the phone up rather than the fingerprint sensor.

It happens to me sometimes.
But instead of rebooting my device, I go to Settings -> Location & security -> Change screen lock. There I use my password/pin and then I wipe my fingerprints already registered and start all over again.
My system update is the one before 1.5.7 I guess (the android updates are called OTA ### right?)
Hope it helps someone who doesn´t reboot the device.
Thanks

[Q] Atrix reboots are killing me.

My Atrix has rebooted itself at least 6 times today. Once while I was trying to post this. How do I make it stop? This sucks.
I tried to search the forum but couldn't do it from my phone. Go figure.
Take it back? Software restore? I haven't had a single random reboot

No one has really figured out what is causing the reboots. What do you have installed/Mods. One theory is if you have some after market task killer (ATK - Advanced Task Killer) it might be killing the OS causing your phone to reboot, again thats only one theory.

Right out of the box. Not rooted (yet) or anything. I notice that the task manager on this phone lets apps run wild unlike my "old" Droid 2. I have a hot phone with sub par battery life. I am wondering if I have a memory leak somewhere.
I have noticed apps like Pandora tend to lock up as a widget but continue to burn through memory. I am hoping for a system update soon.

I also have not had my Atrix reboot on it's own. You can try to hard reset your phone and not reload your apps to see if it's one of your apps causing the problem. But I bet you will have to get a replacement phone.
One thing that has started happening to me is when I used the speedtest.net app it'll run one good speed test the second run it'll display 50kbps down 50kbps up then it'll reboot very odd don't know why this might be

Make sure you charge your phone full to 100% before doing a hard reset... This helped my battery life tremendously... Don't forget to backup your data
I do get random reboots, but only once in awhile (3x since I can remember from release date of Feb. 22)... I think Motorola is aware of this issue. There is an update in beta test right now so hopefully it will be out for every in the near future.
Good luck.
Is there any update to this? I am also having random reboots on 4.1.26 and 4.1.52

I noticed when my Atrix would reboot itself, it was USUALLY when GPS was in use. I know Speedtest sometimes uses GPS to determine which server to use, which might explain this? Just a guess though.

I've only had one reboot but messing with GPS caused it. Basically I went in and out of the navigation app 4 times. I can't remember why lol.
OP: Do you leave your gps on all the time? Maybe try turning it off for a day or 2 and see if that improves your situation.
Ive only had one reboot to date as well and it was also GPS related. I had just installed the update last night, and went into the app GPS status. it locked up and rebooted the phone. only time its ever happened...?
weird
I think the reboots are associated with polling.. if not polling then some underlying data send/receive issue.
i've also had about 3 random reboots in the past week, i'm currently running 4.1.57
My phone recently starts to reboot by itself too.
Running 4.1.57, rooted, and Webtop mod.
Most of the time it happens when I try to wake up the phone. The phone would not wake up and then reboot itself after a while.
At least with the update the issue is the phone randomly reboots when there is
1. Low Signal
2. Coming off wifi and unable to reconnect data.
Pretty much when the device loses the data connection and cannot reconnect it reboots. Been worse since the 1.57 update.

when I've had random reboots, (about 2 of them since the 1.57 update) I've noticed that each time the phone was busy pulling something from teh internets, and would just jam-up. Maybe there's a buffer overload or something and the phone has to reset to clear its cache?
Then again, I know NOTHING about internets, except how to watch pr0n and dl torrents.
I too, have never had a single random reboot.
I've had 3 reboots in the past week alone. Mine usually happen at the beginning of a phone call. I'm getting sick of having to call the person back and explain that my phone just rebooted.
Anyone heard of any updates on this issue ?

Do you guys use an underclocker like setcpu or cputuner for screen off? I was noticing wake lag, along with the screen not fading in properly. I would see a quick flash of the current open app before the lock screen would appear instead of the smooth fade from black. In my case, I suspect it's from under clocking. I decided to uninstall the underclocker since I'm not noticing that much improvement from it. So far my wake lag is resolved.

Yep same here...it's really starting to annoy me...I flashed back to stock 1.5.7 and initially it looked like it was resolved but then it came back. I upgraded to 1.8.3 and saw the same wake up lag (2-3 seconds). This is all stock no 3rd party apps installed yet. I noticed that when the phone is plugged in it responds really fast without lag must be a suspend thing to save battery when not plugged in. I rooted, installed gladiatrix and etc. still a problem. Really annoying the hell out of me.

I get the same problem, rooted, unrooted, all P Roms and with or without widget locker. When my missus tried to unlock the phone once, she locked it again about three times as she kept re pressing because it didnt respond.
same here... wake up lag... dont know why.... im rooted, sideloading and gladatrix 3
im using setCPU to underclock on screen off.. ill try without it
I too have wake up lag, always. I'm on a US atrix, 1.8.3 with gladiatrix installed. It did it on stock 1.8.3 too.
I'm not using setcpu or any kind of lock screen app/mod.
Same here, so hard to wake up sometimes to go into work.
oh on the device my bad it happens from time to time actually. but on the most part its fine.
I was just messing around a bit more, and it seems to only be after the screen has been off for at least 15 or so seconds? So if I just go on/off/on/off/on/off it's fast, but if I do on/off/wait more than 15 seconds/on I get the ~2second pause.
Blah.
My phone was working fine, then wakeup lag. I started looking at running processes and noticed the browser was using 100mb of ram.
Killed it and all is well again.
I've had up to 10 seconds lag...usually about 3 though. Using WigetLocker.

anyone find a solution to this? mine is about like a second lag. rooted 1.8.3 running greyblur
Any update on this? It happens on all pseudo-roms?
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
I'm rooted and this has occurred for me since I got the phone on the day of it's release no matter if it's rooted or what p-rom is installed. Sometimes the only way I can get it to wake up is to hold the power button in until the power down prompt wakes it up (though this isn't a frequent occurence).

Phone has a slow response randomly and I have to reboot to fix it.

I wanna know if anyone else has this issue or not when click an app like a game it takes up to 10 seconds for it to run and after exiting sometimes the main screen is very delayed and sometimes unresponsive when scrolling left and right. I also have an issue of the phone not wanting to switch back to 4g if in 3g or 1x just stuck until I reboot or restart it. Wanna know if I should get this one replaced or not. Also GPS is horrible never accurate. It say in running little kids on the sidewalk over constantly or running threw people house. I have factory data restored it but same problem. Need to know if I need new one?

It does happen. Try a different kernel or over clocking.
this happens to me occasionally, usually only when the battery is hot/doing a LOT of things at once. (meaning when i'm charging and using pandora over bluetooth, wireless tether, and waze at once) the phone lags up so much that when i press the home button, the haptic vibrate stays on for about 3 seconds.... this is when i know that its happening - and i'll just pull the battery...
If you're running stock & it's been like that since day one, you might consider exchanging it. If you're running a custom rom/kernel, reflash & leave it at default settings for a few days & see if the problems resolve
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
I've never had the lag issue you speak of, however, the gps issue I have seen, but has been fixed in recent custom roms and will be addressed in the update. If you are on stock, you might want to just wait it out for 9 more days till the OTA rolls out. If you are using a custom rom/kernel combo, what are you using?

I also forgot to mention that i'm on BAMF 1.8 with the kernel that it comes with.
If your rooted, i'd recommend unchecking your "set at boot" and profiles in SetCPU, reboot, and see if it continues. As said above, if unrooted... a call to verizon may be in order.
My phone is not rooted every phone I have rooted besides like 2 I have bricked. But yeah I don't get why they didn't run this stupid phone a dule core. I got to play with a phone that had a dule core and response is so amazing.
Then you should take it back to verizon & exchange it for another. Your Tbolt shouldn't be like that out of the box. I've never had GPS issues, even on stock it would lock within a few seconds. And dual core is overrated unless you have apps that actually take advantage of it (not many). No wonder you were impressed with dual core phones lol. My mildly overclocked Tbolt runs Sense just as fluidly as any Atrix runs MotoBlur

Battery life...WTF google

My phone started dieing overnight and I was really confused because I could've sworn I had a lot of like left when I went to bed. So I did a test tonight...
Charged to 100% at 10:30pm
All background application closed, ram cleared
Wifi and GPS off
Results: after 8.5 hours of doing nothing, I lost over 75% battery.

Looks like Google talk is keeping it awake. Never used GT before so not sure if that is normal. I am having similar (but not as drastic) with ms exchange keeping mine in awake state. I am using ics alpha 2 Rom and did not have this issue on stock GB. What Rom are you using?

I noticed the Google Talk but I never use it, and it's installed on my phone, but I can find a way to uninstall it anywhere. It also doesn't give me an option to log out either.
Oh and I'm running the ICS alpha 2 ROM. I don't recall having this problem with GB.
I use the ICS -1 Click Odin leak (In progress of getting a better ICS loaded) but I have noticed that I run into a lot of Battery life problems when I am sleeping... If I leave my phone unplugged overnight it always dies, I have to charge it. It's weird... Because I can be on it all day with amazing Battery life, then it just dies over night with a full charge of not even being in use...
I probably need to run some analytics to see what is killing it in the first place... I always force close my apps though...
This happens on any OS, GB, or ICS...

BINGO!!! Just checked some screen capture from battery stats from GB and my cell strength was no ways near as bad as it is on ICS. Need to see if any fixes are out there. It almost all tan for signal strength on ICS vs all green in GB. Same locales for both samples.
by the way, i was getting between 1 day to 1.5 days on rooted GB oc'd to 1.84 with 4 hours screen time. Did not ever see exchange using any noticeable % of battery. Now getting 15 hours with 2 hours screen time and exchange using 6% of the battery. Not going back yet because the pro's out weigh the con's.

Yep, it seems like the partial wakelocks are getting you.
It will go into deep sleep but then go up to 384 off and on.
Gtalk looks like the biggest culprit.
Like I said if data is off it shouldn't have wakelocks.
Another test you could do tonight is the exact same but put it in airplane mode.
It shouldn't budge much.....
I managed to find a way to log out of google talk, so I'll test it under the same conditions tonight to see if that changes anything.
Airplane mode overnight is not an option for me since I need cell service in case of emergency calls. Generally, I do notice slightly worse reception of the previous GB ROM, so the modem might be questionable.

Understood about the calls. You can get calls and texts without data though. That's why I was recommending 2x battery which is like juice defender I think. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.a0soft.gphone.aDataOnOff&hl=en
I realized I really don't need data unless I 'want' data. I do push my emails but they won't push until I turn on data. Saves a lot of battery, especially when on LTE.....
It works well for me because you can set a delay for the data. So you can turn on your screen (not unlock) and see if you got any new texts. If not, put it back in my pocket. All without data coming on. I do these quick checks all time...
Then there is a delay time you can set after you unlock.
I have mine set to 3 min. If I do get a text, I will unlock, read it and maybe respond quickly, then put it back in my pocket. As long as its not mms that's all done without data.
If I need to get data prior to the 3min there is a notification to connect the data.
I'm coming from the thunderbolt and we had to REALLY find all the tricks to save battery life. As it given to us by HTC and Verizon it was unacceptable.
At any rate, sorry for the wind there. If you're wondering, I have no association with 2X battery. I just like to spread the word when I find an app that is useful and has helped me out.

I used to use juice defender but a couple things were a deal breaker for me:
1) First was that it rendered Cerberus almost completely useless. I could not get the phone to connect using the web interface at cerberusapp.com since the phone had no data with the screen off. Sure I could have used the SMS method of activation, but I don't have another phone to text from and it just isn't as flexible as the website.
2) Every time I unlocked the phone, I had to wait 10+ seconds for data to fully reconnect before I can start using stuff. When I unlock the phone, it's usually to check something very quick, and if I'm stuck waiting, I'd rather suffer the battery loss than to wait a bunch of times.
I suspect every battery saver app has this issue, and they can probably be configured to work to my needs, but I just don't have the time and patience to be tinkering with stuff like that.

JD Ultimate has an option that allows foreground apps to force enable/disable data, which is an easy thing to set. Also, my experience with JD is that data reconnects as soon as I unlock the phone and before I can launch an app. Battery saver apps are definitely frustrating, but I find that the correct settings fix 95% of the annoyances.
I hear ya on the time thing. Just thought I'd over up that tidbit. I don't seem to have much of a delay. 2x does allow for whitelisting apps you want to run like Pandora.

Yup, that's exactly why I don't want it. If I rarely/never use the app, I don't want it constantly connected wasting my battery and data. I wish there was an easy way to turn that off. I've been reading on Google and there were posts from 1-2 years ago that said signing out of gtalk doesn't help with the wakelock, so we shall see tonight when I test it again.

Actually, there is (sort of). Purchase an app called Autostarts on the market. Open it, wait for it to finish loading, hit the menu button, then tap the 'group by application' option.
Then, scroll thru the list to Google Talk and tap it. This will expand a bunch of different conditions that Google Talk automatically starts under. Disabling every condition will cause the app to never automatically start in the background (but the app will still launch if you manually launch it). Since I dont currently have root, I cant see what the conditions are, but you might need to leave one or two enabled if you need to receive incoming calls.
Reboot your phone after making any changes.
I should also mention that if you manually launch the app, you need to remember to manually close the app if this is what you assume is causing the battery drain.
If nothing else, you can use Autostarts to help determine if Gtalk is what is causing the issue by just disabling everything for it and watching battery drain rate.
I also use another app called Battery Widget Pro by 3c which will tell you everything about the battery and what exactly is causing it to drain.
What I would do is disable everything unless it looks like its something for receiving calls (if you need to receive calls that is) and reboot the phone, then test it by using another phone to call your Google # and make sure it works.
The point is tho to disable everything you can. I personally use Autostarts to disable every user app that doesnt either have a widget or a scheduled process that needs to run in the background to perform its task. Helps a crap ton with battery life.
So looks like signing out of google talk did not help anything looking at more detail in the better battery stats it might be google maps that's causing all the wakeups

Slow wake up

When I lock the screen of my Galaxy S3, then press either the power button or the home button to show the lockscreen, about half the time it takes about 2 seconds to show the screen after button press. I've searched and seen S-Voice caused this problem so I disabled that. I also removed my SD card and rebooted but the same issue still occurs.
Any way to fix this because my HTC One X didn't have this problem...
Thanks.

Flash other ROM can make it faster...
Or tune off power saving mode.

Power saving mode is already off. I don't particularly want to flash a ROM unless I have to because I've had warranty troubles in the past. Are you certain a ROM would fix it? Which ROM?
And I also tune lock screen off.
Do you install any power save app??
Two Whole Seconds close your eyes and count to ten not worth the bother wait for JB release ,

I get this also. Got it on the Stock ROM and ARHD. I have also seen this on my gf's Galaxy Ace, but only when upgraded to GB. On Froyo (Yes, that old version) it turns on instantly. So think it might be a Samsung thing. Not yet tried an AOSP ROM on my S III yet so may give that a go as itching to get some Jelly Bean on it.
Hello! I am new to xda forums and this is my first post
I also have a problem with slow wake up time from sleep after flashing the latest Synergy rom. Any ideas why this lag happens?
Thank you in advance!
this lag is killing me. it's mega retarded that high end phone is having this kind of bug.
any rom without slow wake lag to reccommend?

Is a one second lag really spoiling your experience? Then flash to a non TW rom.

Lag is hardware-related looks like. Present on CM10 based ROMs as well. On stock-based disabling S-Voice helps just a little bit when it comes to waking up from Home button...
Killing me as well. :\ What I getting used to is to press Home while pulling phone out - straight away so by the time I get it in position to work with, the screen is either already on or will be on in a 200-500 ms.
Still this is a most frustrating "feature" of SGS3 that will most likely force me to look for replacements once those are available on the market.
The issue is still present even in the latest Paranoid Android ROM.
After tweaking a bit, I found that if you have WiFi enabled, will cause this lag.
Just disable the WiFi and you get instant screen wake up.

This problem annoys me to death too. I've tried many ICS/JB stock ROM and custom ROM (including CM10), but none of them could solve the problem.
I did notice some trend: right after a reboot, the screen turns on fairly quickly. Then after turning on the network (mobile data or wifi) and use facebook or other apps that access network for a few minutes, the delay starts to increase to the usual ~2sec. Looks like some network process might be causing the problem. FYI, My cousin's Note 2 don't seem to have this problem.
Any hacker out there can give some hints or help find out what process might be the culprit?
it's because the phone goes into deep sleep, to prevent this you can download a app that named softlocker. you may get not as good batterytime.

"not as good" would be too soft of a term. It'll kill your battery life probably

From what I see, I don't believe deep sleep is the problem. My LG P500 (running ICS) goes into deep sleep all the time (per CPU spy et al), and it never has this problem. Seems to me like something else is causing this...

no other brands have this problem. only samsung, thats so strange.
I too suffer from wakeup delay of 1-2 seconds and it's driving me crazy.
After 2 long years I had to live with majestically f**ed up LG Optimus 2X, I finally decided to throw that junk away and get a phone that works as expected, phone performance of which would be equal to it's price (and the price was not something that limited me).
Now I own a phone which even though is snappy and nice and everything, takes ages to wake up. And what pisses me off the most is that Samsung is OK with that, because obviously majority of the customers / owners is OK with that. How is that possible ffs. Low end devices for fraction of that price resume from deep sleep almost immediatelly (in time I don't consider waiting). How's that this is not a big issue ?!
Sorry, I'm just frustrated
EDIT: To add something constructive ... the deep sleep really is the problem here. If the phone doesn't go to deep sleep, wake up to lockscreen is instantaneous (try that by yourselves with SoftLocker app). It's believed that S3 suffers from this issue because of the way the GSM modem is integrated with (or in ? I am not sure) Exynos4 - source.
I just smacked my phone in the table, while in my pocket and now I"m experiencing the same problem. Is this even possible, or I had it before and just didnt notice till now?!
