Are you using the stock messaging app? What rom and phone are you using?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App

Yes, stock messaging app on SGS2 (as the forum states). I'm on stock KE2 and rooted via chainfire's rooting method then reflashed stock kernel.

Have you turned on always vibrate from within the messaging app? Go to all threads in the app, press menu, then settings, scroll down to notification settings, then press the option that says "Vibration" and make sure the option for always vibrate is selected.

I would but the setting isn't even there which is what surprised me most!
EDIT: I found an app to let me enable that vibration and it works now but it should be there as an option by default!!! WTF SAMSUNG!

Yes.
Email: while in email press menu, settings, scroll all the way down and you should see vibrate option.
Sms: should vibrate by default, if not press menu, settings and you should see the vibrate option there.
Go to settings, sound&display, and uncheck phone vibrate if its currently checked.

in the stock messaging app -> settings -> multimedia messages -> auto retrieve .. which I think only applies to MMS not SMS
As far as I've seen, there is only one place to control notifications for the stock HTC messaging app. In the stock messaging app -> Settings -> Notifications .. I would double check all the notifications are turned off in there. No notifications should appear if all those options are unchecked/disabled.
If you're still receiving notifications after double checking they are all turned off, then it would appear HTC didn't code something right in their apk and that is definitely a bug!
Hope the clarification helps! Let us know how it goes!
Yes sounds like a bug. What are my OPTIONS? everything was just like you explain only auto retrieve on mms nothing for sms

What would happen if we deleted or freeze the messaging apk? I'm having the same problem as well

Open Messages>Menu>Settings>Notifications>Received Notifications *uncheck*
That should be all you need to do. If you are getting more than one notification it may be a different app. You said that something pops up, stock messenger doesn't pop up. Do you have SMS popup installed by chance?
I removed mms.apk from system apps and everything is fine now.

That is not an option only for mms not sms

[Q] Can I disable screen on when I receive an sms?

I hate how my screen turns on when I receive an sms message. I only need the notification icon in the taskbar and the led blink and if I disable the notifications from the settings the screen does not open but I loose the other notifications as well. Any ways to fix this?

Bump
interested in that too
Don't know if it's possible with the stock app, however if you're willing to use a 3rd party app, Go SMS does have an option to keep the screen off and quite possibly other apps do too.

switch to HANDCENT SMS, it is the best sms app, i am using it for a year now. Go to setting and disable pop-up. Now when you receive a message, it will vibrate, led will blink, but screen will not turn on. You will ses the message in the notification bar.

That's what I'm using right now but I want to minimize the use of third party apps as much as possible . Plus with handcent sms when I send a picture or video it doesn't work. I have to use the regular messaging app in order for my mms to leave successfully .

Still no solution for this one. I don't want to use handcent or go sms for two reasons. First I like the simplicity if the stock samsung app and second I use the direct call feature that only works with stock app. There must be a way to hack the default messaging app to stock opening the screen when receiving a message.

BUMP. This feature is sooooo annoying!!!!
It irritates me also. I've used Handcent on every device in the past, but I don't want to for some reason on this one. I actually rather like the stock messaging app.
I suppose I'll go back to Handcent. The screen on is annoying, plus it creates a temporary wakelock that drains the battery even more.

Screen Wake for text....

If you're running a ROM which doesn't wake the screen for a text, and that annoys you, try SMSawake. Its simple and works flawlessly. No pop ups. Nothing. Just screen on for the length of time you set...
Sorry if posted before. On phone and can't search very easily.

or you can simply use any number or messaging apps that give you way more control over the system than the stock messaging app (handcent, for example, lets you set the screen wake with or without popup, and change notification tones for different users, among others. i'm sure gosms and other messaging apps give similar advanced customization as well).
We all know that. For those that don't want a spaceship for a messaging app, there's this tiny simple solution.
Works very well...

There is probably an option in the messaging app that allows the screen to turn on (depending on the rom).
Most disable it for BLN support.

Not in any messaging app I've seen. I've only seen it in 3rd party apps. And you can have the screen wake and BLN. It just activates when the screen turns off.

I have it in my messaging app. Also Bln on ics with stock messaging app does not work of the screen is activated when receiving a message, so screen wake needs to be disabled for it to function properly.

Turn off notifications and use an app like light flow.
Use a different MMS app.
Many ways to skin a cat here.

This.
I use Handcent and there is an option in settings to set the "Do Not Wake Screen" setting.
You need to go into your stock SMS app settings and uncheck notification options though.
As suggested by another user, turn off notifications in the sms app. Download an app called sms popup in the play store. Go into that app. Disable the popup notification. Set the rest of the settings such as the notification icon, notification sound, etc. With all that done, you essentially have the stock app behaving the way you want. I've been rocking this solution along with light manager for a few weeks and it's flawless.
