Hi ,
I have Bell Atrix, unlocked, I flashed the Franch SBF 2.1.1, and all worked well, EXCEPT..
the phone is always roaming, I cannot get data unless I check the Data roaming, there is a little (r) next to my signal all the time..
and I don't know how to fix it..I checked Build.prop, to see if there any setting there.. but I dont know which and what to look for..
my question is: is there a way or a settings that I can change to get rid of the raoaming issue.
as I said my Atrix is BELL and I am with fido..
You need the apn settings for fido, and create an access name under wireless settings - network settings -access point names.
Have a look here:

I did put the APN for Fido, unless I turn on the roaming data, it does not connect.. also now one seems to explain the (R) next to the signal.. why the Bell Atrix started to show me that its roaming after flashing with FR 2.1.1 sbf.. in on Montreal with FIDO and fido sim in my Atrix..
that is my real question.
Hi,
There are two numbers, MCC, and MNC in the APN, the phone will show roaming if what the network reports is different than what is setup.
MCC (mobile country code) for Canada is 302, you should have that.
MNC (mobile network code) for Fido is 370, if your APN isn't using that then you will be roaming.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Network_Code
The French sbf may not have the canada codes in it's apns.conf, see attached file from the Bell stock firmware, you can replace /etc/apns.conf with that, then go to access point names and reset to default.
Cheers!

I'll take a look in my apns.conf but it must have the Canada codes as I have been running the french sbf since it was leaked on my Bell version (on Bell) and never had it roam. I just had to add the Bell apn (obviously) and it worked fine.
I do have a question for you though, since you seem to know a lot about these phones, etc. On my last phone (Samsung Galaxy S), there was a secret menu code (like *#*#4636#*#*) that would take you to the network band settings. From there you could not only see what band the phone was running on, but you could SET what bands were active. Is there anything like that on the Atrix? I am curious if the modem in these non Bell sbf's like Telstra/french sbf access the 850MHz band or not.
Hi,
*#*#4636#*#* is the only one I know about. You can set GSM vs GSM only etc, that would be where you'd change bands.
The codes would only be launching an android app/service somewhere, i tried a hex edit and file search of apps, couldn't find it.
Cheers!

Thanks for looking. I wasn't sure if you could even manually set anything other then selecting "USA Bands" in 4636. It's no big deal, i'm just used to being able to go in and manually select bands on my previous SGS.
My signal is fine, it was just for curiosities sake.
HI NF
I check my APN. here are the values
Name: FIDO
APN: Internet.fido.ca
USERNAME:Fido
PWD:FIDO
*****
MCC:302
MNC: 370
Those are the only values I have..
this is really strange.. according to the above, I should not be roaming.. but something changed in my phone when I first flashed the French SBF.. and is shows roaming after that flash..
this is really strange..
UPDATE: another problem : when I choose Setting->call Setting->Operator Selector, I notived two things.
the Check box next to Select Automatically is not there, I think it was there when I was on Bell Stock,
next when I choose .. Search Networks.. it searched for long time and phone stops responding, I have to Turn off .
also, when I choose Advanced Setting the Call waiting is greyed out, when I click on Caller ID I get Invalid SIM Error.. again I have to reboot to get the phone working again..
the info I have after *#*# 4636 ...
Nieigbouring CID shows as UNKNOWN..
Roaming: Roaming
NETWORK TYPE:UMTS
not sure if this will you a clue..
Hi,
Sounds like it might be an issue with the radio itself, or it could be that you are just roaming, perhaps a network outage. I would try flashing the telstra sbf, see if you get the same problem. If we had a Bell sbf would could revert back to the stock radio, so we have two options, 1.87 or 1.92. You could try just flashing the radio to see.
In my settings, I have it set to GSM (auto), nothing special there. In network settings, I have it set to automatic, under operator selection, auto is selected. I don't have roaming issues myself with either firmware, but I am not using my phone in your area. Could just be a network update in my area from being in the same boat.
Cheers!
NFHimself..
I followed your instructions about Restore the partitions.. and it works.. I dont have roaming anymore and data work.. you are the man!!! thanks so much for your help
it Worked!!!
I followed your instructions to RESTORE the phone and man.. I was so happy to see it work.. thanks so much for your help..
You're welcome, two times.
Cheers!

OK guys the title explains my predicament. I live in Costa Rica and am currently with the I.C.E for any of you that may be from here. I purchased a used S2 from a guy that bought it from Claro. So the first thing I did was get rid of the stock and I flashed everything like I wanted which is:
CheckROM v6
Using DarkKnight's Kernel
I'm using the KI3 radio but I have about 20 others and none of them changes my situation (coming up)
Original info was:
PDA-KG7
Phone- KG4
CSC - KH2
NOW here's the deal, my network icon has full bars but with an R for roaming. The phone works fine, I somewhat have data connectivity although SLOW, BUT when I go to APN settings there is nothing there NOR will it let me save a new APN, BUT I do get the 3G and H icons depending on where I am, I just can't program in a new APN or get rid of the Roaming icon no matter what ROM I flash, kernel or radio combination...
I have tried automatically and manually selecting my networks also, no dice...
I have of course already gone to *#*#4696#*#* and changed settings and tried all the variants but currently have it on WCDMA preferred.
I have also gone to *#2263# and tried all those variants but left it on WCDMA All Channels.
So I am more than open for any suggestions.
Go to Sammobile.com & search for stock firmware for your country/carrier (or just your country if they don't have any carrier specific firmware for your region), flash this firmware via Odin following whatever instructions Sammobile have for firmware downloaded from their site.
Once you've done that, check your APN setting & see if you have full connectivity. If for whatever reason your APN settings are blank (if you only end up downloading/flashing a country specific firmware only, for example), call your carrier for the APN settings and then enter these manually.
First thing you do when you have these problems is go back to stock & see if you can reproduce the problem or whether going back to stock fixes same

Thanks alot for your response MistahBungle.
Well on stock firmware is where I originally have the problem, that's the reason I began flashing ROMs and radios. IF I use a SIM from the original carrier which is Claro then all is well. BUT if I use a SIM from one of the other two carriers then the phone signal says roaming and I can't save any APN settings, no matter if I'm on stock firmware or any of the other ROMs or radio combinations that I have tried.
OK. Looks like we'll have to dig a bit deeper
So do you have baseband & IMEI in settings/about phone ? That issue of not being able to save APN settings with those other carriers sounds to me like a SIM or network issue. My first thought was it's a problem with the baseband, hence I suggested to flash a stock rom. But if that was the issue, you probably wouldn't be able to enter APN details for any sim/carrier.
Actually, now that I think about it. You know what it sounds like ? That the phone is network locked to your original carrier. That would explain everything.
If your phone *should* be locked (like you're on a contract where you only 'own' the phone at the end of the contract, etc), then I guess you can either pay the original carrier to unlock it. Or you can try one of the many unlock methods you can read about on here/apps you can get on the Market. Or if it shouldn't be locked yet it is, maybe ask the original carrier to unlock it.
You could also try flashing a specific rom for one of the other carriers, but I'm pretty sure that phone is network locked.

Ok just to clarify... all that makes sense, but what is ODD to me is that I don't think the phone is locked... I have full phone capabilities. I can make and answer calls, send texts, I even have full internet capability (even if I can't save any APN settings and there are none to be seen in the menu to choose from), I have the full speed of what I'm paying for from my carrier... the phone just won't let me SEE what APN settings it's using and in the signal it says R for roaming, but in networks it shows that it's connected to MY network...
Yes my IMEI does come up, BUT when I try one of those unlock apps I always get the message that it was unable to unlock it, but it's working with my carrier.
Ahhhh. OK. Yep that's a bit clearer now
OK. So we're pretty sure it isn't locked. That is really weird that it won't let you enter APN settings (regardless of which rom you're using), but you still have internet connectivity. Again, showing your network as the network connected to, yet showing up as roaming on the taskbar, is weird.
I've gotta say I"m pretty much stumped then. Haven't read a similar situation on here in the 4 mths I've been following the Q&A section of the board pretty much every day. Sorry I can't be of more help
Hopefully someone better qualified that me reads your post & can help. If you don't get a reply in a day or two, give it a bump.

Hey don't apologize, as you see no one else has ventured to give me a response either and I'm completely stumped myself. I looked for 5 days for an answer before I started a new thread because no one will go off on a noob for not searching quicker than I will, but I just haven't seen anyone with a similar situation on any forum anywhere...
THANKS AGAIN!!
Now to the rest of you devs, come on help a fella out and tell me what files I need to be looking for or modifying
Ok MistahBungles I got an update for ya... I decided to download a different firmware package (the PDA and Phone match mine but not the CSC), it's for Claro Argentina, BUT the ROM isn't branded when I booted it (the ROM the phone came had a CLARO boot logo (another reason I started looking for a different ROM)) and THIS ROM automatically has my APN settings in the menu without me doing a thing and the R in the signal is gone....
So now my question is how do I go about flashing the ROM I wanna use which is CheckROM but not lose my new found freedom (I ask because I'm not sure if this is a simple radio issue)

The Phone maybe Network Locked.(Not sim locked) As taken from gsmlocker.com:
Q. What sorts of locks are there?
A.
- lock phone to SIM
- lock phone to OPERATOR (network lock)
- lock phone to CODE (product lock = offer lock)
If your phone is locked to the sim you cannot use any other sim than the one you have: SIM broken makes phone useless.
If your phone is locked to an operator, you can use any SIM from this operator in your phone. You can switch between contract and prepaid as you wish, but not to a different operator.
If your phone is locked to a code, the phone checks a special "password" (GID) on the SIM that must match your phone. Providers often use different passwords for contract and prepaid.

OK I get your point BUT the phone if fully functional, I'm using a SIM from a different carrier, I have a data connection, make and receive calls, the whole nine yards, it just won't let me see what APN setting it's using and the R symbol is in the signal... once again, IT IS allowing the use of a different SIM from another carrier
Yes its the same as me! I have the R showing as well.(if you put the Claro sim in the R will disappear yes?)

Yes when I use a CLARO SIM the R disappears....
BREAKTHROUGH... I think that I have found the culprit... since I live in Costa Rica I use Market Enabler... apparently whatever it changes is causing the problem, which is weird because I have 3 other android devices, I use the same app on all of them and don't have this issue... NOW I'm really scratching my head... guess I need to contact the dev?
Ahhh. So Market Enabler is changing the CSC which is causing the network settings to disappear/barf.
Nice work finding the source of the problem Yeah tell the dev. Hopefully they can find some sort of fix/workaround so you can still use Market Enabler.

Well I just through and installed and tried ALL the market unlocking apps and they all apparently do the same thing and causing the same result, my phone thinks it's roaming, so now the head scratcher is why my other Android devices don't behave in the same way? Sorry to bump this up, but I'm having the exact same problem. I was wondering if you ever figured out how to fix it.
I have a HTC Sensation and it happened to me right after I upgraded my custom kernel version to a newer one.
I never installed Market Enabler nor Market Access but when I check the SIM info it shows incorrect MNC and MCC values which
I can't change... they won't save in the system options.
I thought maybe my SIM card is screwed up, so I'm thinking of getting a new one from my service provider.
I just have to check it on a different phone first.

Ok, forget it. My SIM card was having issues, got a new one from my carrier. Everything is working fine now.
I rooted and flashed my GF's SGS2 with wanamlite 13.0 ROM and its perfect.. but now, she called me and asked why she cant connect on the internet using mobile data.
No signal indictors like 'E', 'G' or 'H' are showing even she enabled the mobile data and neither changing GSM to CDMA vice versa worked.
She has also tried restarting the phone, searching the network operator and choosing the right one but to no avail. Her sister also has the same network provider but she doesnt have any problems on the mobile data.
Is it possible that it is a Phone defect? I really doubt it since she can do text and call using her SGS2.. Im confused >.<
PS: I've already tried searching this kind of question so please, dont post 'letmegooglethatforyou' links. Thank you.
First thing you do is go to the carriers website & get APN settings, write them down & check the APN settings on the phone. If there are APN settings on the phone but they're different in any way to the ones you got from the carrier's website, change them. If there aren't any on the phone (in settings/mobile networks/access point names), these need to be entered, make sure APN type is set to default.

Thank you for your wonderful advice..
Im so stressed that I even forgot that there is an APN settings needed (I swear that it is automatic in my own S2).
Anyways, I'll call her once again and try to work things out.. I hope she can understand and follow how to check/change the APN.
Will update once done.
Thanks again!
No probs Post again once you've checked/put the correct APN settings in if it's still not working & we'll nut it out further.

I´ve tried with searches but no succes

Thanks a lot for your interest
The first carrier was Orange, in Spain, and the actual one is an spanish Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), called mobil R
Regards
Have you tried modifying your network settings or updating? Can you screenshot {more settings>network} also you need to ensure the hardware in your phone is compatible with the network spectrum of your current provider.
Sent from my Moto X Infused GS3
The very fact you're able to use the R/Vodafone SIM in your device proves you are unlocked. If it were tied to Orange you would have been prompted to enter an unlock code.
Without knowing the carriers you were going from or to I couldn't rule out radio frequencies as the cause of your problem. With this knowledge, it's possible to rule that out. Therefore your problem can be traced to one of the following:
*APN settings are set incorrectly.
*Your carrier's coverage map is inaccurate in your area and you really are roaming.
Check your APN settings, but I'm inclined to believe you are actually roaming from your location, in which case I'd go back to Orange since you weren't roaming with them.

ro.roaming.extended=true
ro.roaming.extended_rule=1
but now i can not edit the build.prop, it gives me an error when storing it

Editing build.prop on the fly is not a good idea. If the build.prop isn't correct, at best the device will throw up errors and at worst it will bootloop. That said, there are build.prop editors in the Play Store. DSConfig itself is a limited build.prop editor in that the settings it adjusts are all written to build.prop when saved.
BTW, it's good to know that you got your issue fixed.
so I am having APN issues after upgrading from 2.6.3 to 4.1.2 rooted. no data or mms, phone and txt works great. same provider.
galaxy s2 sch-r760 generic cdma, ACS provider here in alaska. apparently goes through gci?
now this is going to be a book, so grab a tasty beverage.
when i add the APN the mnc and mmc are not correct.
when i change them it discards the APN
i have no sim.
this thread did not help
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715788
if i dont change those, it seems to communicate with my network as it fills in the mmsc field. but i get no internet.
if i enable then disable airplane mode it shows the 3g emblem, then it disappears.
I have all the correct APN info from my provider.
I have tried every way of changing the APN-conf.xml file but nothng has worked.
my thinking is that i need to change the default mnc and mmc that appear when i go to add the apn, to the correct values and then i will be able to save it.
however i cannot find that field in the systems. if someone know a trick i havent found in the last week of researching, please help.
could my phone be locked? if so how would i go about unlocking? could upgrading my software have changed my cdma settings??
i am fairly new to messing with android but i have some linux experience and am a quick learner.
Also if there is a custom rom or kernal or binary or what ever the operating system is called that might fix this issue and work on my device please let me know.
if someone does help i will pay a reward to them via pay pal, it wont be much but hey its better than nothing.
I love this phone....there, I said it. But it's driving me crazy.
I bought it from a Chinese retailer, who shipped it with X821 firmware, but the box states that it's an X820. I doubt there is any difference in the hardware.
I would have left everything as it was, but I can't seem to make phone calls (don't have a data plan yet...yeah, I know....) with anything other than 2G, and that is about to go extinct. When I set it to WCDMA, it shows a UMTS connection, with no carrier designation, but the tower is the same one I connect to with 2G. The phone does sometimes show an AT&T 3G connection in the status bar, but I can't make calls, even though I have full signal. When I place the same SIM in my old HTC Inspire, the same monitoring app shows "UMTS - AT&T HSDPA+" and works just fine.
I'm at my wits end. I have rooted, installed TeamSpain recovery, replaced the firmware with the X829 and even tinkered with the frequency configurations through DFS Studio (which did a lot of complaining, and I'm still not sure if the changes stuck 100%). I also played with APN settings and tried the SIM in different slots, both alone, and with another SIM. And after all of that, still no progress in getting this phone to use a 3G or 4G connection to make calls. If I don't set it to "GSM only", no phone calls in or out. I'm essentially right under a tower, so signal shouldn't be an issue.
If anyone is using the same provider in the US, and is not having these kinds of issues, I'd really appreciate hearing what firmware you are using, and/or what you did to get things working.
I am using it on x820 with official stock 0.17s firmware, and did a dirty flash to cuoco92's 17s firmware. Everything works including HD voice calls, and full LTE.

I tried this, as well as the Remix ROM. In fact, I think I've tried just about everything, without success. At one point, I had one of the apps indicating a 4G connection, but the phone diagnostics showed GSM (2G). Even the apps aren't all sure what to make of what's going on with the connections reported by this phone.
Currently on the cuoco92 v35 ROM. When WCDMA is enabled, I see simply a good UMTS connection , sans carrier name, in the "Network Cell Info Lite" app, and no ability to make calls. I also often (but not always) see the "AT&T 3G" sign. 4G or LTE never shows at all, even though the diagnostics show that the phone is communicating with an LTE transmitter, when preferred network is set to "unknown". It won't even let me set things like "LTE only".
Any chance you could set your phone to WCDMA and see what the "Network Cell Info Lite" app shows you? Anyone else with this phone on AT&T?
BTW, I am now using a data plan, which I thought might make a difference. It doesn't. EDGE data only for me . New SIM card is on the way, but my hopes aren't high.
Is it possible for a Chinese seller to have borked the phone so thoroughly with their x821 ROM (it's an x820 marked phone), that it keeps any subsequent radios from flashing properly? I don't know how/why it would work for some and not others.
Starting to really dislike this "phone"......it's more of tablet at this point.
Thanks.
I think APN is not set for AT&T
try this:
"Main steps
To use data services on our network with a non-AT&T device, you may need to program the data settings. The sections below provide the correct settings and steps for programming based on your device type and operating system.
.
Access the Settings menu.
Locate and select Wireless & Networks or More Networks.
Select Mobile Networks.
Select Access Point Names.
Locate and select the option to add a new APN. This is usually accessed by a + symbol on the screen or by tapping the menu button.
Program each field using the settings below.
Save the changes to return to the APNs menu and select the new APN.
Name ATT Phone
APN phone
Proxy Not set
Port Not set
Username Not set
Password Not set
Server Not set
MMSC
MMS proxy
MMS port
MCC 310
MNC 410
Authentication Type None
APN type default
APN protocol IPv4
Bearer Unspecified
Note: If you are unable to program your device following the steps above, refer to your user manual or contact the manufacturer for assistance."

Thanks, but I wish it were so simple. I have tried this, and other APN settings. None work to get this phone to be usable on anything other than 2G.
I just received and activated the replacement SIM. Still no improvement. While typing this, I have Network Cell Info Lite app running, and with the Set Preferred Network Type showing "Unknown" in the phone's diagnostic screen, It will switch randomly between "EDGE AT&T" (which works fine) and "UMTS -" (which is useless). Both have strong signals. For a split second before it switched to "UMTS-", the app showed "GPRS AT&T", but only for a split second before it kicks over to "UMTS-".
I wish someone using this "phone" on AT&T in the US, would run this app to compare notes. It may be that that the phone works fine on a full implementation of LTE (i.e. in locations where AT&T have already deprecated 2G) but not in other areas. Still, that doesn't seem to explain why this phone seems unable to register on the same 3G network, used easily by my other phone, with the very same APN settings and SIM.
You would have to call att and check if they turned our phone on to use lte. If your phone is not "registered" as an LTE capable phone it wouldn't be able to pick it up. This phone has all the bands needed for AT&T because I am using it now. All LTE work straight out the box, and i'm on the latest 19s cn rom

I'm a bit confused. Is this what you did to achieve proper function of this device? I.e. calling AT&T and getting them to do this for you? My conversation with their tech person didn't seem to bear fruit in this regard.
Also, which slot do you have the SIM card in? I've used the stock 17s and now on cuoco92 v35 ROM. There definitely seems to be a difference in how the network settings behave, based on the location of the SIM. At one point, after selecting BAND 6 (when it would let me), the phone showed a constant "AT&T 3G" connection, but it was useless. No calls and no data.
