Hi all,
I recently acquired a Samsung Galaxy S (Vibrant) (running Froyo 2.2 upgraded from Kies) from a friend of mine. Earlier tonight I Unlocked it by modifying the nv_data.bin file or the first method in the unlocking thread.
I also rooted the device but have NOT flashed any custom roms nor have I even flashed ClockWorkMod (yet).
The problem I am having is that the GPS does not seem to lock on any longer. I'm using GPStest right now and it can see 11/12 satellites but cannot obtain a lock. This is the same with other apps such as JustGPS and Google Earth, etc.
I can still obtain a lock using WiFi and it is important to note that this phone has no service. My friend stopped paying his bill, I bought it from him and so on and so on. But that shouldn't matter as it didn't before I rooted and unlocked the device.
Can anyone help me figure out what the issue is here? I received one lock about an hour ago using JustGPS but it only locked onto 4sats with 12 in view.
Thanks in advance!
Unless your totally against flashing a new rom I would do it so many to chose from with great gps updates. Many are even themed close to stock. Search the development section lots of gps fix answers in there.

Are you trying to run it on a sprint network? You won't get service if you are. (Just noticed the Evo in your signature). The sprint networks are not compatible with the Vibrant afaik. If someone proves otherwise then you might have messed up the IMEI while unlocking the phone.
As for the GPS locks, when was the phone manufactured? If it was an earlier Vibrant (June-August) then I'd recommend performing the hardware gps fix first, as they corrected this issue in later Vibrants.
Thanks for the quick replies guys. To answer your questions, no, I'm not trying to run it on Sprint's network. I haven't tried to run it on any network in fact, since I've unlocked it.
Also, I would flash another ROM but I just sold this phone on eBay as unlocked/rooted. I sent the buyer an email asking if he wanted me to flash a custom ROM for him but he hasn't responded so I'm just going to send it to him as it is. Unlocked and Rooted. Lol!
Hopefully he'll know what's going on...
Moreover, I walked outside with the Galaxy S running GPStest running and with my EVO running GPStest as well. The EVO locked so quickly, the Vibrant took longer but finally got a lock and locked on 6-7 sats. So it does seem to work, just slower and less accurate. The accuracy was at about 20-40ft. My EVO's accuracy is at around 3-12ft. Perhaps the fix will address the accuracy issue as well?
It looks like the phone was built on (or at least there is a date on the side of the box) saying 11/05/2010.
If there is a hardware fix that was put out by Samsung that would not have been included with the update to Froyo about a month ago I would like to install it before shipping it off to the guy.
Does it have to be installed using Kies or by other means?
Thanks!
Hardware fix had been performed on that manufacture date. The lock takes longer because you're not on a network. When it can use coarse location the lock is much faster...the long time for lock is normal for that situation.
Makes sense to me! thank you for the feedback!

hmm just for clarification purposes.

I am admittedly a noob when it comes to Android phones. I have had my i777 for a few months now and have successfully bricked it more than once. Having said that, I have found that the answers to my questions have always been on the board somewhere. I am having troubles figuring out where to go with this portion of the issue though. Having tried several different ROMs for my phone, I keep having the same issue. With any ROM, other than stock, I miss phone calls or text messages when my phone is locked and on Wi-Fi at home. If I'm out and about with my phone in my pocket and locked, it works normally. But, if I'm at home working at my desk and the phone is locked, I will not get text messages or phone calls. Notifications from apps like CNN continue, but nothing from the mobile network. I have followed the guide to return to stock and built my own jig that worked to reset my flash counter as I flashed before I read when I got the phone. (Former iPhone user that just assumed it was as easy as a jailbreak, really really dumb on my part)
I am a tech geek. I follow instructions well. I am sure the problem is with my phone and not the ROMs. My question for the forum, is where to begin troubleshooting the issue. I want to be able to use these ROMs.
Some info that may be helpful:
Baseband: I777UCKH7
Kernel: 2.6.35.7
I have tried the following in no particular order:
UCKK6-SHOstockV1.9.2noWipe
Serendipity_8.2
update-unnamed-v2.2.1-full
ICScrewD_2.1
TurkbeyRom-v33
Each has individual issues that I can deal with and learn to fix, but the phone issue I, obviously, cannot get past.
Have you set the phone to keep the wifi active when sleeping or locked?

No I have not. Does the wifi connection prevent the cell network from connecting?
cell network shouldn't disconnect at all if it is, swap it out could be bad phone. Also what is your signal level at your desk at home? Low signal normally causes missing of messages.

No, it doesn't.
Do you use any 3rd party apps like tasker?
When did this issue start? Perhaps there is an issue with the tower that serves your home. How strong is your cellular signal at home? I believe text messages (except MMS) are sent over the cellular network. Your being on wifi shouldn't matter (does being at home with wifi off and the phone locked still cause issues?).
I can't imagine other ROMs causing issues, though. If anything, they would mess up your data network only if they had the wrong APN settings for your area (for example, for a while, people using Unnamed didn't have data issues, except for a few like me who lived in certain areas with Cingular towers). Or maybe the stock modem files are better for you than the ones provided by the ROMs?
Maybe you have an old sim card that somehow has issues? You should be able to get a free one from at&t. Do you have another phone that you can test it with?

I keep a minimum of 3 bars and live near the center of a large city. As stated in the op, this is only happening on added ROMs never on stock. I have again reverted to stock (+root), since the op, and confirm that I am getting messages and calls at my desk at home with the phone locked.
****************************Edit for SoCaliTrojan post********************************************
I do not have any additional task managers installed, I've just always used the one built in. As for the SIM card, I am using the one that I got with the i777 at upgrade and get the 4G network when not on wifi, so I think I can rule it out. My wife has a Note that I have been drooling over, guess I will have to "borrow" it for "testing" when she gets home from work.
Also, I notice I am on baseband KH7 with Android version 2.3.4. I see mention of KK6 and 2.3.6 on the forums. I have avoided flashing the baseband, when possible, to keep from possibly bricking the unit. Is it possible that upgrading these could resolve the issue?
That is a very weird problem. Only thing I can suggest is compare the APN settings in root with a custom rom's settings. They should be identical, but check anyway.

Then it isn't connecting to 4G networks.
It's labeled as "4g" but really just multiple 3g connections to give you a faster overall speed. But you might want to just try getting a new sim card at your AT&T store, if that doesn't work, try a different modem (like KK6) the whole list/downloads are in the development section.

I made AT&T upgrade me to a n LTE sim card. Our phone disent have LTE but the newer sim cards supposedly will make your speeds faster when LTE does come to your area due to it pushing HSPA+ faster than enhanced backhaul.
You said you live in the center of a big city maybe being surrounded by a lot of tall buildings could be causing havoc on your cell reception.I know at my work I can send and receive messages and calls everywhere except our breakroom but everyone else's phone works fine in the breakroom.

Hey all, I apologize in advance if this is posted somewhere already, I did search for a couple hours and haven't found anything that come close to my situation.
I bought 2 Samsung Galaxy Notes (i717) a couple months ago. With the news of running them on our T-mobile network, I was sold. Both devices were brand new, in the box and cealed from the factory. I unlocked both through the same Cellunlocker.net site for $25.00 each. I rooted both phones and installed CWM. After insalling Saurom RC7 and the Vkl1 Tmo Radio, everything was fine for about a month. All of a sudden, on my phone, I start losing Network/Data, needing a restart to get it back. Over the past month, I am up to an average of 20-30 restarts a day and sometimes it only works 50% of the time, the other 50% I get nothing, at all.
My 2nd phone (wifes) has no issues at all. We both have the same OS/Radio's on them, nothing is different, except for the IMEI number. We both have them in the same area for use and mine will crap out all day long. Nothing I do fixes it. I have replaced the SIM 4 times, reinstalled the same or a new OS many times, Ive heard, oh its your radio, need to reflash it, corrupt file, the list goes on. If its something that you can suggest, I have probably already tried it, software wise. . T-mobile cc says its cause its unlocked, well my wifes is unlocked and doesnt have an issue....soooo.
The only thing I can come up with is there is a difference in Hardware, between our phones. Not intentional, but maybe my Network/Data, antenna is lose or broken and hers isn't. Thats the only thing I can come up with, other than the unlock code is bad, but if thats it, then why did it work solid for a month?
I am at my wits end, I went back to my sad pos Vibrant, that works. I took my note to a local repair place to run diag tomorrow. Hopefully its something they can find and fix and not bend me over in the process. If anyone has any info on this issue, or has had the same problem, please feel free to fill me in.
Thx all in advance

Based on the fact that you are running two identical devices ,with identical software etc.
And based on the timeline of trouble that yours is having ...I'm leaning toward a material defect in the device.
The evidence is simply too strong to ignore ...IMHO
A warranty return is my suggestion ....
And I'm very sorry to hear that news ....g
Just an update....I picked it up from the cell repair store. They told me, my antenna needed to be reseated. Once done, I havent lost signal yet in over 6 hours. Good news is, they didnt even charge me.
If it happens again, I will keep this thread updated, otherwise it looks like it was a hardware problem after all.
Yep...
As expected ....
And great news on the free repair ...g
How did they reset the antenna was it software or did they open IP the device

open the device and push the antenna connecter into its seat.
Easy to say, difficult to do. I don't have a link, but if you go to youtube and search "galaxy note disassembly" you can see it and decide if its something you can do.

Not this guy ....

So you might get a pm one day ranger ....with me begging for help on the other end ...LOL ....g
Ok so....my paper weight, still doesn't work. I guess I spoke too soon when I replied all was well. Im not sure what the cell repair store did other than reseating my antenna, but it worked great for a solid day, then started acting up again.
Today I switched my wifes SIM for mine, to try and determin if I just had gotten really unlucky with bad SIM cards. Nope. My SIM worked great in her phone, got signal right away. Her SIM in mine? Didn't get squat on mine, meaning its most deff my hardware (SGH i717).
Long story short, don't purchase online....so you have the ability to take it back to the dealer and throw it through his/her window. I love the Gnote...hands down, coolest phone I have ever had....just wish I didn't get a dud. After all this time, I still haven't heard of anyone having the same issues. I can't be the only 1.
Edit: Just spoke to Samsung and they said it's an issue that happens with the Reciever/Antenna and needs to be repaired. They looked up my IMEI number and said its still under warranty, even though, I took it to a cell repair store and its unlocked with mulitple flashes. As long as it has no water/physical damage, its covered. So I guess I will find out in a couple weeks.
Bad news /good news I guess ...
I'm glad it's getting fixed .....by samsung.
And no ....
You are not the only one ...
There have been 4 others I know of ....
But at this point it's looking like a software issue, with your device being the exception having a hardware failure....g

Hi, I purchased a Rogers i717r used. It came with a custom ICS ROM installed based on AT&TI717UCLE2. It seems to have a similar issue most likely hardware related. Although it would show some signal level it didn't regularly connect to the network. It wouldn't let me make calls or use data. I wanted to make sure all the band were turned on so I followed the guide I've used for other Galaxy devices (see below). It was set correctly to automatic. To further troubleshoot the issue I tried turning on only the GSM frequencies 850/1900 (which is what Rogers uses). I connected immediately to the 2G network and got excellent signal strength. I could make calls and use 2G data. Trying to use only the 3G CDMA bands did not work nor did the COMBI BANDS.
I believe this phone has a antenna wire running from the USB charging/dock board to the mainboard. I wonder if this wire or connector has been compromised. I think the previous owner said the USB connector went bad and it was replaced at some point. I may have to open the phone at check the connectors.
Before I start investigating the hardware, I will try to get it back to stock.
There must at least 3 antennas in this phone maybe more. WiFi, GPS, GSM, 3G, 4G, (possibly multiple for different bands). I'd like to know which one is which.
Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this is appreciated.
Open the Phone Screen and Type the following code:
* # * # 1 9 7 3 2 8 6 4 0 # * # *
The phone will automatically take you to a screen called:
SERVICE MODE
AND YOU WILL SEE THESE OPTIONS:
----------------------
[1] DEBUG SCREEN
[2] VERSION INFO
[3] UMTS RF NV
[4] GSM RF NV
[5] AUDIO
[6] COMMON
----------------------
all these options are written very very small so you will have to touch the screen very accurately to get the right one... so select them in the following order:
[1] Debug Screen
+
[8] Phone Control
+
[7] Network Control
+
[2] Band Selection
Once you Tap on "Band Selection" you will have a screen stating these 4 Options:

[2] WCDMA Band []
[3] GSM Band []
[4] Combi Bands []

Someone was nice enough to make a Nandroid backup of the stock ROM. It didn't solve the issue though. It still isn't completely stock as the superuser app is still install along with recovery. I guess I need a copy of the unrooted kernel just to be sure it's not software. While in stock GB 2.3.6 I tried the software update feature to upgrade to stock ICS. It reported there was no update available. My guess is it can tell it's been rooted.

At the most basic level*Personal Communications Service*or*PCS*describes a set of*wireless*communications capabilities that allows some combination of terminal mobility,*personal mobility, and service profile management.[1]*More specifically, PCS refers to any of several types of wireless voice and/or wireless data communications systems, typically incorporating digital technology, providing services similar to advanced*cellular*mobile or*paging*services. In addition, PCS can also be used to provide other wireless communications services, including services that allow people to place and receive communications while away from their home or office, as well as wireless communications to homes, office buildings and other*fixedlocations.[2]*Described in more commercial terms, PCS is a generation of wireless-phone technology that combines a range of features and services surpassing those available in analog- and digital-cellular phone systems, providing a user with an all-in-one wireless phone, paging, messaging, and data service.
I figured that's what that meant. I would still like to know what component was replaced. Part# or Sku would be nice, but they are very vague lol. Should have it by Thur/Fri so I will update then if it's still not working and what the overall outcome is, also info on what "component" was replaced, with any luck.
I had the exact same problem after unlocking my i717 through your same online unlock code shop. Signal would drop all the time. I flashed every radio version I could find and that didn't help. Only other thing I could do was flash different roms and see if it somehow fixes.
Haven't used it for a while, but was just re-flashing it so I could gift the device to family and found the Padawan JB v2 and the stock deoxide roms from jedi roms brought back the signal lost. I flashed the latest AoCP 5.8 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1773229) and no signal lost in the last 12 hours. I'm also on radio version I717UCLF6. Hope this helps anyone else that stumbles on to this tread.
OP, did you figure out which part had to be replaced? I'm having the same problem. I wish Samsung would release this information, such a headache

Has any one figuired out which part of this phone needs to be replaced to fix loss of signal.
Ok, I've had issues with this phone that began with a bad battery. I got a new battery through insurance and my problems continued, even worsened. The phone will lose network connection constantly. It will reboot on it's own or during use. This is the only way it will obtain network connection once lost.... I went to at&t a million times and they flashed it for me a few times, replaced my SIM card three timesthis month and no luck. I decided to be brave and root it with cyanogenmods latest 4.4.2 kitkat (which I love, props to them) and it still continues to do the same crap! It's getting old and im beginning to think it must be a hardware issue, but I read about flashing a modem for the phone. Does anyone know if this might solve the problem or is it likely a hardware malfunction?
It seems to cause the most issues when im not on wifi or when LTE is activated.
Tried the *#*#4636#*#* code to change the connectivity settings but the only option im allowed to use is the lte/gsm auto (PRL).
Any advice is appreciated.... my next option is shooting it with my shotgun and using it as a conversational piece at the office.... maybe a

Could be a modem issue, could be as simple as changing you APN settings. Where is your location? Could be affecting you a bit. Run a search, many have had this issue.

No need to promote your own business here. You could have sent a PM for a company claim.

I live in central Arkansas and I'm not exactly sure how to check my APN settings...?? And if it's a common issue based on location, why does AT&T not recommend a solution to anyone with problems? Or do they and I just don't know?
I've ran this phone on straightalk 3g for about a year. Recently upgtaded to a lte sim and loose signal a lot since. Miss calls. Don't get text. I have read certain art lte towers have this problem. Sounds good since my wife's s4 has same problem. Both phones ran fine and got calls on 3g sims

I found the settings directly through the AT&T website but theyb only povide 4G HSPA+ settings.. which are not LTE.
Follow this steps and check if your APN settings match, and if they don't then just create a new profile with the settings in this link:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/go...ogle-nexus-5-t-lte-apns-network-settings.html
Techinically, this settings are stated to be for the Nexus 5, but the APN are carrier based, so regardless if it states Nexus 5 APN settings they would still work for our OG Note
You should be able to get to your settings by going to settings / wireless data & networks ---more / mobile networks --- Access Point Names
Hope this helps!
Hey guys,
I have a pretty unique problem and im not sure there even is a solution, but here goes.
The story is that I had been living in Canada for the last 7 months or so and bought myself a shiny new Desire 601 from Virgin Mobile (its a zara_ul). Since then, I have managed to brick it hardcore style, but i was able to ressurect it after 4 months of fruitless attempts through various odd files, sheer dumb luck, and the RUU from mrplowdans google drive (super props by the way, you saved my phone good sir!). I had to SuperCID the phone in order for the RUU to stick.
So it goes without saying that im now running the Telus version of KK (i updated through the usual OTA once i had returned it to stock 4.2.2) on a VM phone. All good, no issues there. Ive since returned home to Australia, unlocked the phone so it works with an Australian carrier, also all good. Im able to make calls and send texts no issue.
My problem is with mobile data. It seems to be having an issue connecting to my carriers 3g/4g. Initially, there was nothing at all, just the bars in the notification bar telling me that i had a good connection to cellular. No little superscript 3G though, and in settings, although mobile data is 'On', it is showing connection failed. Adding a custom APN appeared to work slightly, the 3G appeared in the notification bar and in settings, mobile data was shown to be 'connected', but still no dice when i try to connect to the web or download an app.
Now i vaguely understand the principles involved here, I get that North american carriers use a different radio frequency to, say, Europe, and that differs again to Australia. My question is, is it on the software side? Would it be possible to find an Australian Radio.img for a desire 601 (i dont even know if they sell them here), flash it, and all will be fine and dandy? Or is it the physical antenna inside the phone that is set to receive only a certain frequency? Im not expecting someone to go and find me a working file or anything, i know most of you live in Canada anyway, but im looking for someone with a greater knowledge of these things to find a theoretical fix.
I know I rant a lot, but in the scheme of things im willing to let this problem slide considering i only just un-bricked it a few days ago AND managed to root 4.4.2 (a significant achievement given my non-existent knowledge of android), but it is a nuicance and if theres something simple i can do of course i will.
Thanks in advance for any help <3
EDIT: Ive since done some googling and discovered that they do sell these phones in Australia, and that the Network specs for it and the canadian model that i have are almost identical, many of the frequencies are the same on both. Leads me to assume that its software sided, the telus radio.img is telling the phone to not see non-canadian frequencies.
Hi all, sim unlocked s-off sprint m9 used to work well on android 6 with official rom. But until the phone was upgraded to Android 7. Data connection stopped working for one operator (NOS in Portugal). However Vodafone works well.
Tried different roms and apn settings, same at all. Data connection does not work on NOS operator.
Does anyone have similar issue and of course any advices?
Thank you all.

Why sim unlock a Sprint variant and not an AT&T or T-Mobile which already support GSM?
did you find a solution?
i have exact same issue.
bought one m9 from ebay with sprint (651) firmware on.
lte was working fine in israel (1800 2100).
after nougat im only getting 3g.
it makes sense that i cant use those bands (1 and 3 i think) on a sprint device.. but it did work with marshmallow
Same problem in the USA
I have (nearly) the same problem in the United States with a Sprint CDMA version of the One M9. The main difference is that my data speed is even worse than 3G, around 10-20 Kbps. Occasionally, I get faster speeds, but I haven't been able to figure out if it is location-specific (but always away from home and work) or due to some other characteristic.
The phone came brand new in a retail box from an eBay seller. It worked as expected for 1.7 years. The OTA update which installed Android 7 (aka Nougat) in early 2017 resulted in the very slow data speeds. WiFi is unaffected, but data is so slow that I cannot reliably send or receive MMS; Google Maps says that I do not even have a data connection for traffic info.
EcoMobile (my MVNO provider; I still have a sprint email address, so I know who is actually providing service) could only suggest resetting my phone; did this twice with no change in operation (but several of the programs which automatically re-installed themselves operated differently, including GMail no longer providing auto-complete for addresses).
After literally 2 hours in chat with htc, they told me that my MEID indicates my phone was "made in Taiwan". I took this to mean that: 1) the person I was chatting with had poor English skills (because aren't they all made in Taiwan?), and 2) my phone is gray market (meaning it was not imported into the country via official channels, even though the manual was in the American version of English).
I came to XDA looking for an answer, too. I was mildly surprised to see that this topic was at the top of the list for the One M9.
The best solution for my situation would be the proper ROM for my phone, but I don't know how to figure that out from the MEID. htc USA says they cannot help me with this.
I could even go back to Android 6, but I do rather like the new features in Nougat.
Alternatively, I could root the phone and install a 3rd party ROM, but I still need to know how to choose the proper one for my phone.
I hope this info finds its way to a helpful expert.
Regards,
Jeff
