Data Traffic Drain!! -- what the heck is this! - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Trying different data monitoring appliocations and i noticed that it drains like hell... in 10 minutes more than 10 MB!
nothing is working in background except
- Weather widget,
- Facebook widget,
- in addition to Email and Whatsapp.
Even email is syncing only once per hour? (gmail is disabled)
So are these data number correct? what's going on??

Maybe Market Updates.

i dont know , i am trying many monitoring applications to check application is doing so ... but seems market is the most... doesnt it stop when u close it with a back button!!!

It doesn't. Its a core android service.

Presume its the same as SGS1 unless data was turned off something connected every 5 mins .

It's prolly and app you have in the background or maybe your market is set to automatically update apps.
I'm @ 150 MB for 10 days of use. I only have the Weather widget pulling data. 2 Gmail accounts with auto sync enabled. Market is set to notify for updates but not to update apps autmatically. Watched a 5 min youtube clip. Check facebook and twitter 10-15 times a day. Uploaded approx 7 facebook photos. Check pulse and xda 5-10 times daily.
The usage above is only when I'm on data. I did not include anything I've done over WiFi.

[Q] How much battery does Motoblur Social Networking app drain?

I noticed some horrible battery life (about less than 9 hours) on my phone, and suspected that Motoblur had something to do with it. 4G, bt, wifi, and gps were not on the entire day.
I did a quick search and saw people complaining that the Social Networking app can be a battery drainer. Have you guys noticed anything?
I set it to one hour sync for now (instead of the default - push), and we'll see how it goes tomorrow. But if that's the case, do you know if I can remove those accounts completely, but still have Facebook and Twitter account information linked to the contacts with their own apps?
9 hours is honestly ok
You can remove any accounts you want and the phone will function fine. My phone lasts like 12 hours with medium use and 6 and a half with heavy usage.
Sent from my MB855 using XDA Premium App
Not really, i constantly check my battery usage and Social Networking has always stayed low on the list. I also have mine set to 1 hour update increments. I was interested in removing all motoblur parts but was disappointed to find that androids Facebook app does 'not' sync pictures to contacts and such and doesnt contain an option. If there is a way to do this, i'd like to know as well. What you can do if your rooted is allow moto's social networking to tag all of your contacts with pictures, then backup your contacts with Titanium. At that point you can remove you accounts, restore through Titanium and have your pictures on your contacts with your facebook account unlinked. Granted, this obviously wont work for new friends you would acquire.
I would just put up with it till someone releases a rom with stock android if you really dislike motoblur. Hopefully that will happen soon, as that seems to be what most people are wanting.

[Q] Push email or gmail sync?

What'll drain more battery, the Samsung e-mail app on push 24/7 (with a single Gmail account), or the Gmail app with sync?
only one way to really find out since every ones phone behaves differently, try each one over two or three days.see how each one goes.
If you use the email app and set sync to just a few hours instead of a few minutes you may find that it uses less juice than gmail (you can also set gmail to sync less often)
If you choose to use one rather than the other don't forget to freeze the other app as they are system apps and will continue to run in background even if they are unconfigured

How do you change gmail to sync less often?
Thanks
The drain is not that bad, I always have mine on normal sync and drain is expected but not as bad it it seems using Gmail app.
I use Exchange on the Samsung App and that drains battery as there's a bug in the source code but not sure how that affects POP3/Imap.
It's a smartphone at the end of the day just enjoy it and charge nightly

[Q] Galaxy SII - Email / CPU / Battery

I hv S2 rooted with titanium, autostart and watch dog running.
After doing all this still i m not happy with the battery life. it dies by evening with push exchange mail, calls , wifi, sms, gmail. no game play or music. I hv freezed unwanted stuff.
I hv noticed that in task manager my email app shows ram usage of upto 28 mb and cpu @ 15% and it turns red in color. is there something i need to do.
Any more suggestions.
my e-mail is also draining most of my power. going to try and look for a fix later and post on here if i find anything. otherwise i'll just install another e-mail app and see?
EDIT: I was also using "Never" sync mail, contacts, calendar... I've been refreshing it manually and even when I don't refresh it, it is the major cause of battery drain.
If your root you can navigate to system/app and delete email + email widget apks, with the stock samsung email even if you dont use it its still running in the background eating battery.
k9 mail is a very good alternative.
Also check out betterbatterystats its very good for seeing whats draining battery.

fanta182,
I fixed my problem. K9 didn't work for me because it would not connect to the exchange server for some reason. However this worked:

S3 high data usage

Hi Everyone,
I got this phone as soon as it was released in New Zealand. The phone is great however I'm finding very high data usage.
Today for example I used over 100mb of data from about 12pm lunchtime. I'm wondering how I can change how often gmail and other applications will because I've gone through the gmail menu but it doesn't specify a time period for sync and I dont want to be using over 100mb per day for data.
On my old Galaxy S I was only using 100mb for the whole month, and I haven't got any extra applications that I know of running for update, just the default weather app, gmail, and my calendar widget.
Any help is appreciated.
Have you checked the built in data monitor
Menu > setting > data
It shows you exactly per app how much data has been used and if this was background (updates) or foreground (when you opened the app).
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
Go to settings->data usage and see which apps use the most data.
you can also turn off mobile data by pulling down the notification bar at the top of the screen and tapping the mobile data icon on/off
Go to data usage, you'll probable see gallery is the culpritpen it and check the box that limits it to syncing on wi-fi only or it'll sync all your Facebook albums. To stop it doing this completely, remove Facebook for Sync account.
Second, if you don't use google+, uncheck the google photos, google+ etc options under your gmail and that'll get rid of the Picasa gallery too.
Just with regard to the build in data usage monitor how accurate is it?
The reason i ask is because every single app ive ever used has not been accurate, some have been better than others but not one of them has ever been 100% accurate, the best one ive come across and it's free is the one which is part of the superb ZD Box app.

It is very accurate, however it does come with the usual disclaimer saying that networks may monitor and bill differently.

[Q] Email Sync abnormal battery drain issues?

Hey all,
I got the Tmobile version of the S6 Edge yesterday and the battery life seemed pretty decent as long as wifi was off - at least until I added my email accounts to my phone.
I've noticed that the Email Sync is taking up a ton of battery on my phone - according to the battery usage meter Email Sync is using 19% with the next highest being the screen at 3%! Its only been on for 5 hours and its already at 42%.
I did add a lot of accounts - 7 total all either exchange or microsoft live/outlook accounts and all setup to download a months worth of emails and push new emails as they arrive. However, with every other phone I've used this hasn't been an issue (two most recent were a Nexus 5 and an LG G3).
Is anyone else having abnormally high battery drain from Email Sync using the native email client? And if so, how did you go about fixing it?

I am having the exact same issue with only 3 accounts- looking for solutions...
This is the main issue I'm having. It was draining 5-10% an hour while not in use due to email sync. I have one email set up for that. I have it set to manual sync now and I'm only losing 1% an hour while not in use. I have the Volte option and Wifi options turned on (but not wifi itself) with no draining issues like other people.
I had the same drain. So I downloaded another email app and been using that instead.
Same issue here, abandoned it for another app, Waiting for a solution.
Did the same honestly - using mailwise right now but it isn't as full-featured as the native Samsung one. What is everyone else using?
Does the high email battery usuage cause Google Service battery drain for anyone else? I browse Reddit for about 30-50 mins each night before going to bed and it usually drops 10-15% but when I wake up, Screen is never on the top of battery usage. It's usually Google Services followed by email, and other stuff. VoLTE and Wifi scanning/calling is turned off for me and I leave location off until I need it so does anyone have any idea?

I have 3 accounts as well and email is draining my battery
Are you people talking bout the Gmail app also or just Email app? If you guys add those accounts to Gmail app does it do the same thing?
I am using the Gmail app for Gmail and the Samsung app for MSN and Exchange ActiveSync for work I have since removed the Samsung accounts and installed CloudMagic and I'm going to see how that works
I too have The same problem since yesterday. And I only use one account.. so a solution would be welcome.
Edit: I use the email app not the Gmail.
Sent from my SM-G920F using XDA Free mobile app
Last night I moved my exchange active sync account and my msn account to cloud magic, left my gmail account in the gmail app and deleted the accounts from the samsung mail app and after a little over 3 hours I still have 95% battery life. Very happy with these results so far.

Had the same problem I am on day 3 with my edge. Think I have found a solution, I have the stock app running with 4 mail accounts 3 gmail and one outlook. I have used the stock app because i like the interface. I also use Gmail with the same 4 mail accounts as when the push to my Moto 360 i can reply only using the Gmail app. I have also 1 gmail running in the inbox app.
The samsung app was using by far the most system resources and battery.
This is what i tried, mail pushes ok, and the email not showing in the battery use list.
Go into the email app then more top right. Go to settings, click on an account, scroll to sync schedule and press, set sync schedule to auto (when received) in top field. Turn off peak schedule green switch to disable. Back out and repeat with other accounts mail will now push to phone. if you want to sync a month or so back do that first until you have mail on device then follow the above steps. Seems to work fine. Without the above steps the mail app would eventually calm down after caching all previous mail. Gmail etc caches in the cloud whereas the samsung app needs to retrieve it.
me too
Just wanted to add that I also have ridiculous battery drain from emailsync. I have only one exchange email attached to the email app and it has kept my cell radio on almost constantly today. I just removed my exchange account and I'll report back if this changes my battery life. Turning mail to push instead of syncing did not appear to fix anything.
Sorry, can't post images because I'm "new" and have only been here 7 years or something.

Emailsync is the problem
Hi
Same problem here with emailsync killing my battery.
Tried the solution suggested, disabled Sync schedule and made sure
Sync was set to push (auto when recieved) and the results are the same.
Emailsync is using 60% battery consumption.
Need a resolution quickly, otherwise will take the phone back.

Same here. Ditched the stock email app and installed Type Mail(formerly Blue Mail) so will see how it goes.
Although the stock email app is ok, Type Mail is by far the best I've used. And I've tried them all!!
Hi all as far back as I can remember the email app always used a lot more battery than Gmail . For the last 6 years I have used Google to collect and emulate the other accounts.
On my galaxy s2 it meant the battery difference was between 6 hours use on email and over 12 hours using Gmail I am guessing it's not changed over the years.
set email sync to 2 hours
i have the same problem.
battery drains in 6-8 hours max and device becomes hot.
looking at the battery usage, the email sync service is keeping the device awake all the type.
it means it's never sleeping.
i'll try two things:
1- disable email sync push or auto service and set it scheduled (every 2 hours or any other parameter)
that seems working for the last 30 minutes. device is cool now and i only lost 1% even using whatsapp. will try it for longer period.
2- if this doesn't work, i'll move exchange active sync to the Gmail app. there is an app on apkmirror that allows you to do so or use a third party email service like cloud magic.
fingers crossed...
switched to Type Mail, so far so good right now.
update
switched to Typemail and battery is at 84% at 11:30am, huge difference. (ONE DRAWBACK - cant sync Exchange Calendar, when i do add my business email account, Emailsync still goes nuts even with emails disabled and calendar ON sync.)
Emailsync was killing it, at the end of most days, phone would be dead at 4pm. Im a heavy user of phone, sms, and email, 3 core features that shouldnt be draining the battery that much.
So until an update is out, STAY THE AWAY FROM NATIVE EMAIL APP. Its a battery killer, and you will not get your utilisation out of your Edge.
Anyone else find any other solutions to this issue with Emailsync???
