I hope this isn't a dumb question, but how is the 4g compared to the evo? Is it the same hardware in the phone?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I'm getting a much stronger and consistent 4G signal. After I walked out of Radio Shack, I held up both my old EVO and the new 3D and the 3D had a full strength while the old one had 1 bar.
Sent from my squeeky clean new EVO 3D using XDA Premium App!!!!
Same here. much stronger. 3x the speeds that I was getting with the EVO 4g. Since I doubt the towers changed overnight, all i can say is that radio design improved significantly. I am getting 2x on my wifi as well. In contrast, I am getting two to three times as many signal interruptions (reconnects).
Thanks 4 the response! Now thats another reason to get evo 3d. Anyone else wanna have a response?

Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
This thing has 4G? Huh.. I was too busy with all the other features. The simple fact that Sense 3.0 is fast as fark and the phone doesn't has been keeping me busy.
What happened to the 3vo being able to talk and surf at the same time as many reports had stated prior to the release of the 3vo? Is this something to be added later or a never gonna happen type of thing?
Sent from my EVO 3D using XDA App
It works just fine, but only if your data connection is either via wifi or 4G.
Yes I know that same as the EVO but i meant over 3g not 4g or WiFi

Sprint has to enable svdo on their network. The 3d and the EVO shift have the chip set. They are just not activated.

would be better marketing against at&t really, since they are the only one with bragging rights at the moment to be able to do this, not even verizon can at the moment.
Actually the Verizon Thunderbolt can do it currently. Its been something that has been making me think about jumping ship, though at those prices, I should buy a flip phone for when my Evo is online...
The thunderbolt can only do it on LTE and the phone has no toggle to turn LTE off unless its rooted

No the Verizon TB can do it over cdma without being in LTE area. Not all VZ areas support it yet but the phone deff can do it.

Don't think so. the way sprint is doing their voice+data will require a certain chipset on the phones that supports SVDO, which last I checked is NOT in the EVO3D nor the shift. The MDM9600 is the only one ive seen and confirmed to have this built in.
Also a lil note for people that are interested This post lays out some things for the future in sprint and are pretty reliable sources for those that do not know them.

Well people, after reading this thread I just had to put in my 2 cents about it. I live in a 3G area of upstate New York with NO 4G around me and can talk and surf on my Thunderbolt. That was the only reason I dropped the call dropping iPhone with at&t and swithed. I drive a truck "18 wheeler" and everywhere I have gone in the New England area that doesn't have 4G I have been able to do this.

No he's most definitely wrong. The Thunderbolt can do simultaneous voice and data on 3g in svdo enabled areas.
Talk and Surf on EVO and EVO 3D
The solution is not at all elegant and drain the battery pretty quickly.
What else is new here?
In any event, be it in 3G or 4G (irrelevant for 4G I guess):
1) activate the built-in hotspot (password protect it to prevent others taking
advantage of FREE Wifi draining your battery faster than Concord)
2) Activate the phone Wifi and connect to the newly created Wifi in Step 1
At this point, you should be able to talk and surf; an added bonus (already available thru the hotspot feature), is you're able to connect other devices to the Hotspot connection created in Step 1.
The new problem you will have now is to find yourself a lasting battery.
Just ran a speed test on my phone and im getting awful speeds. Around 300kb on average. Running stock rom ke5 radio and matrix kernel. Any idea why it is so damn slow with full service bars??

Yes you're right about wrong area... but keep in mind bars mean nothing.. I could have two bars on my nexus s and my friend could have full bars on his evo 3d and I'd still have better data speeds than him. As of late sprints 3G speeds have not been great.. 4G is where its at.

Also if you were using the speedtest app itgives really inconsistent results. I use speakeasy.net on my phond

sometimes sprint's speed sucks, sometimes it's great. i get inconsistent speeds... sometimes i'll get 1.5mpbs on 3G, other times I'll get 300kbps...
Updated both prl and profile and i'm pulling down speeds of 199kb. Awful. My upload is faster than my download haha.
On wifi I'm pulling speeds around 16mb

Some tests I ran between my 3D and LTE
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26511061&postcount=2
I'd really like to see a comparison of WiMax speeds versus the 3G speeds of the LTEVO. I'm sure WiMax will still be faster, but I'm curious to see by how much.
Since I'm keeping my OG activated (for WiMax) until LTE is active in my area, it would be nice if the numbers were close enough for me to avoid having to carry around two phones for several months .
I'll post a speed test shortly

Wow. That's ridiculous. I've read it is faster on 3G than other phones (namely the 3D), but I wonder if most zones will see that much improvement. Seems hard to believe.

3G for me on the LTE is between 500-700kbps while the unofficial 4G (not on Sprints map but shows on Clear's and connects as Sprint). I just ran my 3D on WiMax to Speedtest it. In my house with 1 bar of 4G and I got 5490kbps down. So you will probably want to carry 2 phones for a bit
I've done three speedtests and average 280 kbps down and 350 up here in Minneapolis with 1-3 bars in my apartment building.
Edit: though I did just get this...
My OG EVO, EVO 3D, and Epic 4G Touch have all had atrocious 3G speeds. Way below other carriers. This phone appears to have great 3G speeds (relatively), and my girlfriend's Sprint iPhone 4S also gets pretty good 3G speeds. I wouldn't be surprised if Sprint purposely throttles data from certain devices and allocates more data to others. Makes sense that they would want iPhone uses to have decent data, they don't have a 4G option. Similar to the EVO LTE, no LTE in the immediate future for most.
I bring this up because it's common knowledge that Sprint's 3G is absolutely garbage, when it fact it could be Sprint purposely throttling data. I wonder what would happen if they just opened up the pipes even to everyone.
Once NetworkVision upgrades are done all this will be moot....not worth fretting over now...
Comparing WiMax to the 3G speed is a pointless task as well, imho....different animals all together; and no phone is going to be faster than the another on 3G really in areas where the problem is capacity ridden issues...In areas its not, then you can see benefit/differences due to different antennae tech and radios used...

Please don't dismiss this as not important, having usable 3g speeds until network vision comes out is important to many of us.We want this phone to succeed in all ways.
I haven't been able to test my speeds yet as it is taking forever (more than an hour so far) to download 6 apps over 3g. I screwed up and didn't test my OG Evo before I deactivated it, but it sure seems like the new lte Evo is a lot slower so far. I will update after it finally gets the speed test app downloaded.

Read what I wrote again...don't think u grasped what i was saying really....
Wasn't dismissing the importance of 3G speed as much as caring about the difference b/w what you got on your 3D and what you get now with the LTE...like I said no matter what phone you have the capacity troubled areas will continue to get slow speeds until NetworkVision is deployed in your area...Also its highly unlikely you will see a phone released that will get half the speed of its predecessor over 3G so there should be no worry really...b/c 90% any slow speed issues experienced here will be network related issues and not the phone...

I, too, take this as good news. While this might not help our current devices in any way, at least I know that my next device in 2yrs should have pretty awesome service by that time.
And with the increase in network speed, I'm hoping that more customers migrate/return to Sprint, and ensuring that we keep truly unlimited data. Not unless they get greedy...

Sounds interesting, but I remember thinking the same thing 2 years ago... I really want to give Sprint the benefit of the doubt but it's tough when my wife is getting 30 mbps down with at&t while I'm lucky to get 3 sitting right next to her. It kinda defeats the purpose of having unlimited data if you're limited in what you can do with it.

Almost every single tower in the country will get 1900MHz LTE. The TDD LTE came out of the Clearwire acquisition and won't effect the rollout of the LTE that your phone can use.
TDD LTE will have higher speeds but a much shorter range, and is designed to compliment, not replace, the 1900 (and eventually 800) MHz LTE.

Actually, 90-95% of all the towers will have 1900 CDMA/LTE by end of 2014-Q12015 along with 800 CDMA/LTE and 2.5 LTE. Network will have the highest throughput of all operators.
