Simultaneous talk and surf? - HTC EVO 3D

What happened to the 3vo being able to talk and surf at the same time as many reports had stated prior to the release of the 3vo? Is this something to be added later or a never gonna happen type of thing?
Sent from my EVO 3D using XDA App

It works just fine, but only if your data connection is either via wifi or 4G.

Yes I know that same as the EVO but i meant over 3g not 4g or WiFi

Sprint has to enable svdo on their network. The 3d and the EVO shift have the chip set. They are just not activated.

I hope they it asap... It would be very handy and good marketing against verizon too.

would be better marketing against at&t really, since they are the only one with bragging rights at the moment to be able to do this, not even verizon can at the moment.

Actually the Verizon Thunderbolt can do it currently. Its been something that has been making me think about jumping ship, though at those prices, I should buy a flip phone for when my Evo is online...

The thunderbolt can only do it on LTE and the phone has no toggle to turn LTE off unless its rooted

No the Verizon TB can do it over cdma without being in LTE area. Not all VZ areas support it yet but the phone deff can do it.

Don't think so. the way sprint is doing their voice+data will require a certain chipset on the phones that supports SVDO, which last I checked is NOT in the EVO3D nor the shift. The MDM9600 is the only one ive seen and confirmed to have this built in.
Also a lil note for people that are interested This post lays out some things for the future in sprint and are pretty reliable sources for those that do not know them.

Well people, after reading this thread I just had to put in my 2 cents about it. I live in a 3G area of upstate New York with NO 4G around me and can talk and surf on my Thunderbolt. That was the only reason I dropped the call dropping iPhone with at&t and swithed. I drive a truck "18 wheeler" and everywhere I have gone in the New England area that doesn't have 4G I have been able to do this.

No he's most definitely wrong. The Thunderbolt can do simultaneous voice and data on 3g in svdo enabled areas.

Talk and Surf on EVO and EVO 3D
The solution is not at all elegant and drain the battery pretty quickly.
What else is new here?
In any event, be it in 3G or 4G (irrelevant for 4G I guess):
1) activate the built-in hotspot (password protect it to prevent others taking
advantage of FREE Wifi draining your battery faster than Concord)
2) Activate the phone Wifi and connect to the newly created Wifi in Step 1
At this point, you should be able to talk and surf; an added bonus (already available thru the hotspot feature), is you're able to connect other devices to the Hotspot connection created in Step 1.
The new problem you will have now is to find yourself a lasting battery.

Yeah, he was like, "They run off sprints towers".
But then I thought about it and I'm almost 100% certain, sprint has a lock on there wimax, like a giant router with a wep key...
No they run off clearwire and since sprint owns 51% of clearwire they let u use their wimax. You wouldnt have a clearwire account on boost hence no wimax. There used to be a way around it about a year ago but clearwire has since patched that up.

In theroy, if you have a clear account, and you activate your EvO on that account... You could get 4G on the phone...

As far as I know not the Sprint Version as far as the gsm Evo 3d I don't know. The radio's don't work and I don't think even if they did Verizon would allow it like the little guys do (coughs boost cough) Even so the Boost network is Sprint's that they pay to use. I do know that Verizon PRL works on our phone but it counts as roaming and sprint will give you the boot for using it too much. I only use it when I visit my father as it's the only way I can get a signal and use it SPARINGLY until the wife and I drive home.
No, you can not.

I think technically speaking, the CDMA EVO 3D will operate on Verizon's 3G frequencies. WiMAX will not work through a Verizon account.
In order to get the device to operate mainly on Verizon and be registered to a Verizon account would be another story and process .. not sure Verizon would support or faciliate this process, let alone allow.
Hope that helps!
Thanks for the responses. Looks like I will jus get a new phone lol =)
Redd3VO
No worries, if you're getting a new phone w/ Verizon I'd say sell your Evo3D for about 250-300 on ebay/craigslist and then wait for the Galaxy Nexus.
Or the Rezound.
Or the RAZR.
Some nice phones are comin' out on VZW this coming quarter...
AND they just updated their data tier plans; doubled every plan's data for the same amount of moolah.

Actually, IIRC, only HTC devices at this point have two radios that can do simultaneous voice and data. Even then, the voice is being transmitted on the CDMA1x network and data on EVDO.

I tested this last night while in a 3g only area, and you can indeed use data while on the phone in a 3G area with this phone. IIRC the thunderbolt is capable of this as well.

It is only on AT&T. They used to have the commercial about talking and surfing on iphone where the guy forgets his anniversary and makes a reservation while talking with his wife.
Only ATT allows it for the iphone.. but ATT is definitely not the only carrier that allows this like they claimed in their commercials. Probably why you don't see those anymore lol. GET SUED!!!! haha
I've been a verizon customer for a day, came from CSpires mess and haven't looked back. Love my actual 3G speeds and the latest and greatest phones. I don't live in a 4G area but new Orleans and mobile are 1.5 hours away. Excited to see what this thing can do on 4g

The quick answer is yes. The Thunderbolt and Rezound can do voice/data over 3G.
The long answer is no. The Thunderbolt and Rezound technically do data over 3G and voice over 1X on a separate radio.
LTE is a data-only protocol for now and voice is done over either 1X (in HTC's case) or eHRPD (in all other LTE phone's case)

Is this phone actually faster than the 4g?

Hello, I just got a new evil 3d becuase of the dual core processor because I thought that the internet would be faster. Is there a configuration needed? With my 4 g my speeds are in the 400 and now with the 3d "dual core" processor I'm in the 200's
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
The processor has little to do with internet speeds. It helps, making things more responsive, but the signal effects the data speed. And the antenna on the 3D are at the bottom near where you'd hold the phone which could degrade the signal.
Is the phone faster than the 4G? Yes. Does that mean you'll get faster data? Not necessarily.

IF your lucky, you might get 100k up / down, but typically, only 25k

This is dependant on location. I'm not doubting you are experiencing slow network speeds, but it's purely a matter of tower saturation, and your surroundings. I'm consistantly seeing downloads in the range of 1.0-1.7 mbs. Sometimes, at night, I can break 2.0 mbs, but that's because there isn't much activity. But, I'm in a major metropolitan area, with strong network coverage from the major 4 carriers. There was a blip for about 8 months where the speeds were really slow, but Sprint fixed the tower by my house, and now I'm back to normal.
And, to the OP, I didn't notice any difference in download speed between my Evo 4G, and Evo 3D.

exactly it all matters were u are with any network. ive been with sprint forever and ive always seen consistent 3g speeds in my hometown ranging from .8-1.7mbps recently ive moved from the east coast to the west coast and im still seeing great speeds but not the same around .5-1.0 which still works and i somehow managed to move from the best 4g city to another great 4g city haha always see speeds of 5-12mbps

The Airave doesn't provide 4G Signals. It does however provide 3G Data Connection which is usually faster than what you'd get from a Sprint Tower. Also Depends on your internet connection that you'd be hooking the Airave up to.

My evo 4G is actually a lot better about picking up a 4G signal, but the speeds are about the same with both. The 3G and 4G antenna are still on top with the 3D but the wifi and Bluetooth are indeed on the bottom of the phone.
If you're not getting at least 600kbps on 3G call sprint and let them know. That's the minimum speed they advertise do usually they'll credit your account for it.

Moving to a Sprint dead zone?

So if all goes well with the mortgage company I'll be moving to an area with poor Sprint coverage. My question is do I get an airrave or switch carriers? I really love this phone, but to be honest I'm tired of crappy Sprint service. I live in mid-michigan and will never see LTE, so I was thinking vzw. Only problem is they don't have any version of the one series. If I were to switch to vzw what would be the best phone to get? I would assume the Sgs3 when it comes out, but not sure what else they have.

The Airrave II needs to be connected to a High Speed Internet. It will provide data and voice coverage for up to 8000 feet. If you dont like the speed that the Airrave II puts out you can always connect to your wireless internet.
Thanks for the replies, I plan on having WiFi anyways so that probably would be my best option because att and vzw are rediculous with their pricing.

Yes they are. I have 4 lines and pay almost $200. With VZW I would be looking I at almost $400 for the same service I get from sprint. You can always make your phone roam for phone service and 3G data. speed will very. just hit #*#*4636*#*# and on the top select the 3 dots, on the menu that comes up hit 800 mhz. only use this feature as last resource.
