How retarded is this?! I can't boot into recovery. I have a radio image on my SD card and every time I go into HBoot, it asks if I want to update, I say no, and my only option is to reboot....
Back story: I set the voltages on a custom kernel too low and I can't get past the white screen. So I need to flash the kernel with stock voltages again.
BUT I CANT ... So I have to wait till tomorrow to get a miniSD card reader or some crap like that.
Whoever programmed the HBoot screen was a total idiot. There should be a way to decline the update and GO BACK TO MENU.
Hey now... Don't go throwing rocks at programmers for the design of hboot. Rule number 1 is to remove ANY PG05IMG.zip after flash for this exact reason. MiniSD is about $20, worth it in your case. I bought one long ago when I did the same thing, except I just put my SD card in my girls TB to remove the file. Bought the card reader just in case.

No, this is why you should have a card reader. Don't get mad at everyone else because you didn't come prepared. Especially with what you are doing. Now who's the idiot
And don't complain about having to get one, it's 2011, everyone should have one, especially when most devices are MicroSD.

You might try connecting to USB when at the HBOOT prompt. I believe it may mount the drive and allow you to remove the image file. Then just reboot to HBOOT, and you should be able to go to Recovery.
Thank you, come again.

Thanks for trying - the sad thing is, it won't let me choose anything because it immediately starts work on the PG05IMG.zip file. And all I can choose is Yes/No to update. And if I choose no, my only option is to reboot, which puts it back into the loop.

Are both of you guys 50+? If so that would explain your response. I've been rooting for 2+ years now (flashing about every week) and I've never had to have a card reader. Why do I need one now? Because the Thunderbolt's HBOOT was poorly programmed to loop if you have an image file on the sdcard. I admit it was a rant but how hard is it to program Option 3 Back to Main Menu? It isn't hard... It's called bad programming. I've programmed far better myself and I'd call myself a noob when it comes to programming.
For someone who says to have programmed better, it sure was a stupid idea to not remove that zip file from your SD card wasn't it? Don't get mad at everyone because of your mistake. You bought the ticket, now take the ride. You should be glad its something that's easy to fix. Next time, do what you're supposed to. Thanks by the way for making that comment back. I needed a good laugh this morning.

Your welcome, always good to have a laugh now and then. Btw, I have SD card readers, what I don't have is a microsd card reader. I don't think they even make those? Just the extenders, the MicroSD --> SD card or USB direct.
I've had the image file on the root of my SD since I rooted months ago. I just didn't assume Hboot would be so badly programmed. I think it's a valid point to make... But nice to know someone's happy today because of me
And yes they do make micro SD readers. Look near the cameras at best buy. At least that's where I found mine. In the future, just.be sure to always delete the PG05IMG.zip from your SD or at least move it to download folder or rename it. Good luck.
Also why blame this on poor programing when the user is not supposed to be using hboot anyways! The developers weren't making this for us and I'm sure they know how to remove files from their sd cards. Don't go blaming everyone else for your mistake.

Whatever... I still think it is bad programming. I don't think what I did was a mistake either, my only mistake was to assume that HTC programmers were intelligent enough not to put a logical error in their programming (a loop). If they had just programmed in a 3rd option to go back to menu, all this would have been avoided. With your logic, programmers shouldn't make things simple and easy... We should all be using dos! If that was the case, Windows never would have been programmed because users should be able to do everything themselves. I work with developers and programmers - that's not how you do things. What I did may be a rant, but I still feel it is a valid one.
You guys wanna bash me for something like this? Fine. Have a go. I get it. Maybe I'm all ****'ed in the head. But if I was programming HBoot, and I've programmed a few things in my day - I would have put an option to go back to main menu.
I have the same problem and it frustrates me, especially when i mess up my phone and it wont boot. I like to go in Recovery, thats where i fix everything lol. But i cant get into it because it doesn't let me change the menu :[

Thank you. Thank you for letting me know I'm not the only one that thinks this way. You made my day.
I just fail to understand why after apparently making it through the root process, people continue to leave these files there. EVERY post regarding anything flashed via PG05IMG.zip through hboot tells you to remove the file after flash. This isn't rocket science. If you can't read and follow directions or suggestions, you shouldn't be tweaking your phone in the first place. We were not intended by the programmers to be doing what we are doing anyhow. Devs have worked very hard since day 1 to allow us these opportunities, if you don't follow their directions you are subject to exactly these types of problems. You can rant and bash all you want... Go spend the $20 on the card reader, be more careful in the future and be glad it isn't going to cost you $100 to replace the phone.

All, I've gone through many of the forums here and all I am now is confused. Issue: Had CWM and NVFLASH on and Honeycomb on gtab. Some issues, wanted to go back to stock. Followed instructions; however, now it's in a loop. I cannot get to it via PC. Holding power and volume key, see the 3 birds and "recovery key detected, goes to gtablet screen, goes to screen with a box (arrow in it pointing down) and status bar across bottom, goes to w/tap n tap screen, goes to screen with tnt; then reboots through the process again and again. I've spent the past two weeks going through the internet and reading the various methods to unbrick, none work; because I can't get to the internal SD card.
Is there a way to fix this? Is there a way to use the external micro-SD card? Or do I just need to throw this thing away? Any assistance would be appreciated. Oh, I've tried the Code Red and every other unbricking method I came across.
Thank you in advance, Michael

Since you are only experiencing a cycled boot loop then you are not bricked. There is still hope.
What NVflash file did you use to get back to stock?
Which bootloader do you want to run?

I grabbed the latest one. Basically, I'm almost at the "throw it in the trash" stage. If there is a way to boot from the external SD card to load the stock 1.1 version; that's what I would like to do and give this to my niece. Thank you for replying.

There is a way to "install clockwork from external SD" - search that phrase and you should find it.
BTW- If you plan on trashing it, I'll pay for shipping to my house. I'll 'throw it away' for you

Well all and all I know your fustration. The first link I beleive you are using is the Stock 1.1 from the 3588 branch. That one I used before and had nothing but issues. The best one to use is from the 4349 branch perfered with CWM pre-installed. After flashing that file shut the Tablet off during boot up. Then boot into recovery mode by holding down the volume + while pressing the power button. Do a Wipe Data Factory reset, Clear Cache, and then under advance Wipe Dalvic Cache then go back to main menu of CWM and reboot device. Make sure you don't select reboot recovery since that will not let you boot into anything but CWM. TNT TabUI will then boot up and you chould be good to go.
Thanks...but
Thanks to everyone. I still can't get this darn thing to connect to the PC or CWM to run. I would love to be able to just put it back to stock and be done with it. The more I work with Android devices, the more I'm convinced that I will stick with Windows or Apple. Android is great, but until there is a one size fits all solution; the tweaking and manipulation one has to do just to increase the functionality is what will be Android's downfall. Nothing is "simple" with Android and unless you're a programmer; there isn't much one can do with it. Partially it is the manufacturer's fault (i.e. Viewsonic) for putting out crap that doesn't even work; part of it is Google for not requiring standards for Android (yeah, no standards are great because one can explore/tweak/etc); and it is my fault (for this instance) for thinking that I could tweak and enhance my system. So, I'll put this thing up on Craigslist and see if I can make some change with it and get a newer device or just stick with a laptop and be done with it. Thanks again everyone for all your help.

Sorry to see that your experience with your newly found failure did not come with a price of knowledge. Truth be sayed I am no programmer, geek or knowledge of script writing either, but what I can pass along to all new-to-android persons is that your best path is to read and follow instructions to the T or you will end up with a expensive paper wait. The web link I posted above is pretty self explained and I give that man credit because I was a newbie too once. Then somewhere in these forums I found that website and was able to recover from just about anything that happened to my poor Gtab. Hell, I even had to drill a hole in the back of the case just because I wanted more and there was ICS from Team DRH. But truth be said that web link is your path and only path to going back to the stock UI and recovery.

EDIT: Don't mind my post count. I'm very active on SD, just not here.
Just wanted to mention that I have not been PM'd or replied to. Hope this guy got his tab to work.
Alright guys, I noticed today that my Titanium Backups aren't on my mount/extsd storage, and I tried to change the backup location under preferences, but it wouldn't allow me. While checking my sd card I noticed the only file stored on it is my pictures? I tried downloading apps to sd in an attempt to move titanium backup, and that's when I realized I have a serious issue I believe. I was given a message when apps to sd opened that said, "this device does not have a real primary external storage, or the primary external storage is emulated"? Whatever the hell that means by emulated I don't know? The sd card was working in the last phone I used it in.
Biggest problem is that I'm rooted, so I can't return it under warranty! At least I can't to my knowledge. I'm in serious need of some help here, I purchased the phone at the T mobile retail store, so I don't know if I can sneak it past them somehow, or if I should maybe just (it hurts to say it) brick it on purpose, and pull the old" it just shut off and wouldn't turn back on" routine?
Please guys, any and all advice will be much appreciated!
Before doing anything drastic, have you thought about maybe reformatting the SD card first? If that doesn't work then try another SD card (they do go bad you know). It sounds like something that should be easy to fix. Whatever you do please don't brick it on purpose. It's not anyone's fault that your device is now acting up after rooting it. At least do them a solid and ODIN back to stock, then try to return it if that's the case.
Hi,
You should read this thread. It should shed some light on your external SD card problem and provide a couple of methods to get around it.

Yes I did format it to no avail, and I'm headed home soon where I'll try a different sd card. I don't want to brick the device, and I've had to unroot and return a phone before because of a hardware issue with the screen that wasn't my fault. The problem with doing that in this situation is that I don't believe there's a way to unroot it and go back to the stock recovery or reset the binary flash counter. As far as you saying it's not anyone's fault, it sure is my friend and it's not mine! I had a Galaxy s4g that wouldn't read an sd card two days after I got it & I had to return it. So, as far as being no one's fault, not true... It would be Samsungs fault, and rooting it had nothing to do with it. If I broke a device because of my own foolishness or stupidity, I would ABSOLUTELY NEVER try to exchange it! The entire basis of my spirituality is based on karma and I would suck it up & pay for my mistake but maintain my peace of mind. This however, I am not at fault for, and I shouldn't be responsible for faulty hardware just because I obtained root access.

Okay I've read the links and this is very odd??? I need to hear from someone with the gs3 that they've also discover that they're phone recognizes & reads the sd card, but will not allow apps to write to it. PLEASE, someone check this and help me out here!
I REALLY NEED TO FIGURE OUT IF ALL Gs3's DO THIS, OR IF I NEED TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO RETURN TO STOCK & EXCHANGE IT?
Sorry for the frustration, but I just spent a heck of a lot of money here, and this is a very aggravating problem....
My TB backs up to the ext SD. I had the same problem you did. Too bad I can't actually remember what I did. :crying:
When you go into TB and try to select storage location...nothing comes up but the internal?
I think I manually moved the TB folder from the internal to the external...then went back into TB to select the location...then selected the Detect button...and it came up with a list of folders that I could choose.
It went something like that. Hope that sheds some light...(sorry I cant remember exactly)
FYI...the ext SD folder is under mnt/extSD...or something like that.
I forget to mention something else guys. I am able to copy & paste my Titanium Backups as well as any other files to the sd card. So, the phone recognizes it, and it will write to external sd if I manually copy things there, but it will not allow any third party apps to write to external sd? I also cannot move apps to the sd card? This is a HUGE pain in the ass! I bought the 16gb model because that's all the retailer I my area had, so the sd card is a necessity for me. If I'm downloading torrents or other large files this could be a problem. I'm really wondering if this isn't just my phone?
It'd be great if someone here with the skills could port this mod for us.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433436
It basically makes the phone think that the external is the internal...and all files downloaded from the browsers or whatever app that doesn't allow sd access...to go directly to external.

Sorry nothing! THANK YOU! I was like 3/4 of the way to that idea, I had already copied the file, but I was just thinking maybe if I deleted the internal file, maybe now it will follow the one I copied to the mount/extsdstorage? I can't thank you enough for just confirming that this isn't a problem specific to my model. I think that this problem should be explained to everyone & stickied. This is a seriously confusing situation. Ppl who don't root or come to XDA won't have any idea why they're music, videos, or anything from third party apps aren't going to their sd cards? Some ppl may not even realize it? I don't know if it's been mentioned in another thread here yet, but I couldn't find anything in our forums about it, and I've been trying to figure out what was going on all day. I still don't understand what the hell it meant about emulated storage?

All stock Samsung Galaxies S3 do this. Google in their infinite wisdom is locking down apps so they can not write to an external card that can infect other devices.
Problem is we all want more control with our external cards and there are a lot of unhappy campers with this new "feature". Gamers are especially concerned because they can not install their games to the external card to free up more space.
This is a real strong reason to buy the 32gb model and not the 16gb. One could take the stance that they are forcing us to pay a higher premium for our storage when we purchase the phone.
As I said you can do the work around with directory bind until:
1. A dev comes up with a a patch
2. You install a custom Rom like Cm9 that has patched out this security policy.
Never mind... Now that I'm using better keywords to describe the problem, and searching outside of just the US variants forum, I'm finding threads... I feel like an idiot now! Some folks are talking as if this is better? I don't see it though. I did a nandroid after root, and it only left me with around 8gb or so with my apps installed. I know its faster memory than an sd card, but it's kind of a pain. I hope I never need to download anything bigger than 8gb... Doubtful ill need my phone for anything that big though.
Sorry for freaking out and making a big deal out of this issue, but I thought my device was defective, and I wasn't using good search terms. I should have been able to figure this out without cluttering things with a two Page thread.

Yes, I really wish I could take it back and pay the difference for the 32gb, but with being rooted its really not feasible. I was browsing XDA on my phone also, and I didn't even catch the link in your first post, I was only reading the links I your second post, lol. I really feel like a dummy here since my question was almost immediately answered. Also, the browser can act a little wonky sometimes on XDA. As soon as I made it home to my desktop, I was looking over the thread & knocking my forehead against the screen!

Actually you are bringing up a valid concern and one of the first to do it in this section of the US version of the S3, my hat off to you!
It would be good idea to have a stickied thread in general that addresses this. That way ppl will be well aware of how to work around it. And yes, a patch for this would be great, because some may prefer things this way, and alot will prefer the previous standards. I for one don't like this one bit!
Put a stock rom on it and go into the store. Tell them you're having issues, they can order one on their end and send it out to you.
I would know. I worked there.
Hi Everyone,
This is my wife's phone, so i'm not very familar with it. She handed it to me today saying to won't boot. If connected to a charger, the screen would come on saying "RDS protocol starting..." and "Battery too low to flash".
After doing a little research her, I asked her if it had asked to do an update. She said yes, but that she's been hitting "no". So i guess it's been asking her for a while. I'm assuming she either hit yes, or it went ahead and did a force install anyway.
I took it to Sprint and they told me there was nothing they could do but replace it, which they have ordered the replacement, but that they cannot recovery anything from the internal memory (pictures, contacts, etc). So all I need to do is get the phone working enough to get data off of it, if at all possible.
The phone has NEVER been rooted. The bootloader is NOT unlocked. She's never let me touch it before.
I have no idea what version it was on (think it was 2.3.4) nor what version the OTA was trying to install.
I recharged the battery a little using a usb cable with the end cutoff and attached the red/black wires to the +/- pins. (about 30 mins or so). The "Battery too low to flash' message is gone and the phone is recognized in RDS Lite (good sign I hope).
Can I just flash "1FF-sunfire-user-2.3.4-4.5.1A-1_SUN-154_5-CM-release-keys-signed-Sprint-US.zip" to it using RDS Lite? Or should I use a later version like 198_7? I downloaded the 154_5 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20331570&postcount=3)
I eagerly await a helping hand.
Thanks,
EB

Contacts are synced to googles servers, so that's not a problem. As far as pictures, were they on the sd card or internal phone storage? If on sdcard, just put the card in a card reader on a laptop or pc. Or you may be able to install bootstrap recovery and mount either internal or sdcard. Or, if you were on 2.3.4, flashing any of those sbfs will work.
You can block the update by changing a line in the buildprop. But that would require being rooted. Id sbf then do the update immediately after since she obviously doesn't care about root or unlock.
Thanks.. I'm sure the pictures are on the internal sdcard. It's the pictures taken by the camera over the past few months. I already have older ones copied to my PC.
peetr_ sent me a custom sbf for an unlocked bootloader + twrp. I'll try that when I get home to see if i can get into that way. (Thanks peetr_)
I'll keep everyone posted.
What line in the build.prop file do I change?

Can't remember ill try to find out for ya.
HUGE thanks to peetr_ for all the help he gave me. I managed to get it booted into Electrify and saved everything I needed. *whew*
I now believe the whole issue was not a failed update, but a sticky volume button that's causing it to go to RSD mode. Whenever I power it down, then backup, it always goes direct to RSD mode. But then I can pull the battery, put it back in.. then hit the non-volume side of the phone against the heel of my hand (fairly hard) 5 or 6 times, then power it on, and it boots normally. Then while it's running, I'll see the volumne adjust up and down randomly.
Then if i reboot it, it's back to the RSD mode.
It doesn't work every time, but I've managed to boot it several times like that.
I just received a reconditioned rezound from Verizon's warranty department. I have 10 days with both (broken and reconditioned) phones. I want to root the new phone. I figure if I use a new SD card in the new phone and follow all of Nil's Business Sense instructions that should work. Then if I put in the old SD card I would have all of my settings and apps restored. I'm not sure if that really would work, that's why I am asking you guys & gals. I didn't have the guts to root the original phone, but now I am ready. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

SD card doesn't affect anything

As cslingerland stated, your SD card doesn't actually affect anything. You only use it to hold the roms and whatnot to install.

You call that easy? you must be a M.I.T. graduate. I graduated from Nova South Eastern University, and let me tell you, It makes no sense to me. That's why I am asking for help!
Pro tip: If you don't S-OFF, you can't brick this phone. It's actually pretty much impossible to brick unless you S-OFF. You can "soft brick" it, but you can recover. Until you S-OFF, you don't have enough access to the important stuff to actually brick, and you can do everything even when you're S-ON...some of it takes a little more work, but if you're worried about bricking, it's safer to stay S-ON.
So, I recommend staying S-ON when you're starting out. It's a big time safety net.

Which part are you having trouble with? Also, what is your ultimate goal with rooting? What are you wanting to do once rooted?

I've helped a ton of people unlock and root their phones via teamviewer. I'm guessing that you're installing a new RUU to get the latest firmware. Or trying to s off because of the sdcard comment.
If you're having problems the sdcard that you normally use could just be copied to a folder on your computer and then use it like normal, for a regular root and unlock it shouldn't wipe your sdcard.
My gtalk is edit removed after 24 hours PM me if you need it

I read a lot about the wire trick. Some people swear by it, others say it's a sure way to short out your phone. I've seen videos on You tube and the procedure looks pretty simple. I was nervous about voiding my warranty, but after just receiving my replacement (certified like new) Rezound, I think they just use the returned phone for parts for the next replacement, So wish me luck as I do the paper clip trick
One question... will my paid for apps live through the back-up to my sd card and back to the phone again

If you bought them from Google play or have the apk then yeaa. Just back them up to your PC if you have the apk. And I really recommend you don't s-off.... Unless you know what you're doing. One wrong move after you s-off and you have a paper weight and not a phone any more.

I concur. And I'm glad you said that cslingerland. I've read so many posts from people saying "just s-off" to people who clearly aren't that well versed in all this stuff and I think that's bad advice.
I'm still s-on and I don't see a need for me to s-off since I rarely flash ROMs. I have know problem having to flash the kernel separately. And I've always liked using fastboot rather than the various tools and PH98IMG files since I like to know/be certain about what I'm doing and I don't want to end up with various PH98IMG files lying around not even knowing what they are. Turns out a lot of people don't know that a PH98IMG file can be anything, it's just a method to make things easier.
My take. If you don't plan on flashing a rom per day stay s on.

After scouring for two days I am just giving up and asking for help. Here is what happened. I have a At&t Galaxy Note. It was rooted but very glitchy. Kept shutting off, weird lines going through the screen, my camera didnt work. I know for that process I did TWRP and cyanogenmod. I went back to att stock from a forum found here. After I did that I had no google apps anywhere. SO my brother found some gapps.zip thing. He put it on my phone after I had restored back to a previous version that did have them. Now my phone wont stay on for longer than a minute. I cant get it to recognize on my computer. So I cant even try to get into it to see if I can fix anything. Everytime I conntect it, a message pops up that says that it cannot install MTP... Even if I restore again, as I have tried. It is still not letting me use it. Then my brother decided to re root it I guess. And that is all well and fine but i still cant use my phone. I saw something about a .zip that removes gapps but I havent been able to use that as my phone just wont install it in recovery mode. Can someone please please help me!!!!

wow. the first few sentences were making sense, then you just lost it grammar wise and lost me. it would have helped knowing what ROM was on your phone. from symptoms it sounds as if t was a 4.2 ROM with no GAPPS and some serious OC/UV issues.
but you lost me with your English and the "TWRP and CYANOGENMOD thingy" i know what they are obviously, but what you did with them is a HUGE guessing game. one person not knowing what they are doing is bad enough, but two of you.......... cant do that man. kind of like masturbating with someone elses hand man. who cleans up the mess.
absolute clean slate is going to be you best option in my opinion. the "Super Everything Thread" is going to be your new best friend.
read it, live it, learn it......................understand it. put yourself in position to help yourself first.
tutorals on YOUTUBE can help too.
can you get DOWNLOAD MODE?
do you have ODIN?
do you have PDA/ TAR files you need?
you may need to re-install the DRIVERS for phone on computer
there is a glossary in Super thread, that is why i capped these words. key points and things you need to do. its a marathon not a sprint.
go slow, one step at time, understand what you are doing. even rehearse it, i did. be confident in what you are doing. make sure you have files for I717.
read the OP's for ROM's
some need GAPPS (4.2) and some don't (4.1.2) or Touchwiz
the new 4.3 will also need GAPPS and there are 4.2 and 4.3 GAPPS. again make sure you have right files. all the more reason to take your time.
and uh, don't just let someone flash whatever on your phone, that's how you get a BRICK.
good luck and let us know.
if i have stated anything wrong, someone else will be buy to correct.
nothing wrong with how i am telling, others just may have shortcuts.
what you do with it is up to you, i just like to understand what i am doing, cause i will have to fix it.
but keep us posted

Im sorry, Im just really frustrated. My phone was working fine yesterday and now its a very expensive paperweight. And not only that but Im having problems with my laptop. Apparently the hard drive just went clonkers for no reason and now I have to put in a new one. Yes I can get into download mode. Yes I have Odin. Yes I have the PDA/TAR files. I made sure everything was for the sgh i717. I read each process ten times before I did it. I installed my drivers from the Samsung website. I think my problem is that the internal sd card isnt being recognized. When I go into recovery mode, which is CMW btw, it gives me an eemc 07 error message and says it cant mount. When I can get my phone to stay on long enough for thecpu to recognize it it doesnt say sd card just phone memory. I will be sure to read the super everything thread. As for a ROM there isnt one on here. If I try to put one one it wont install and keeps saying that eemc 07 error message. Thanks for responding. Im spiraling in self-pity right now but im determined to get my phone back.
If you get it back to stock, do a complete erase/format, and your still having all these glitches, there's a good chance there's hardware issues. Especially if your not able to see the external SD card etc.
If your the original owner (I.E. you got it from a dealer with a plan), and you can get your counter reset to 0 on stock with these issues still showing up, it might be easiest to take it in and get a replacement. That is, if you have a warranty option available.

Its not the external sd but the internal one. Its just gone... I know that this is the problem at this point. But I have no idea how to resolve that issue. I have no idea where it is or how to get it back. I have been on xda and droidforums for an extreme amount of time trying to find a solution but nothing going. The only way I have seen to reset my counter is to use triangle away. As I cannot even use my phone due to freezing and restarting I cannot even install that app. I am hoping that one person in the wide world has had this problem and fixed it and will read this and tell me how to fix it.
Status 7 means you need to update you recovery

I'm running 4.1.2 now. I will not be customizing like that for some time. I might think about it later but I'm so glad to have it back I'm just going to enjoy it for awhile.

you know, something going wrong with mine was my biggest worry. when I decide to screw something up, I can really screw something up. so I was very hesitant. it probably took me 2-3 months to get the courage to flash. but that was most likely a good thing. it made me be very thorough in the process.
all I am saying is don't let it completely discourage you. you have time.
glad you got phone back, I know it can be a bit of a scary thing. I have come across an issue or two myself and actually surprised myself by fixing myself. actually a pretty good feeling.
anyway, stick around, there are some pretty amazing folks here.
