[Q][APPS][WIDGETS]Tablet-Optimized For Productivity - Nook Color Themes and Apps

Hi,
Can anyone recommend tablet-optimized (or at least something that looks good on a 7-inch android screen) versions of the following apps? I am using PhireMod 6.2 (based on CM7).
E-mail - Currently using the stock e-mail app. I'm looking for an app that would somehow function like GMail does in HoneyComb (where the message list appears in a pane on the left in landscape orientation). App also has to be able to sync Exchange. The closest one I found was "Mail'd" which is a Notion Ink Adam app. The interface of the app was great but using it was frustrating (no way to select all plus a lot of other minor annoyances that drove me back to using stock e-mail)
Calendar Widget w/ Montly view - I have NO idea why but searching "Calendar Widget" on the android market brings up a bazillion apps and widgets that CANNOT display monthly view. I am using Jorte temporarily but I really don't like the way it looks since it was built for smaller screens and it looks weird and fuzzy on the nook. I need a calendar widget that automatically marks days where I have meetings/appointments/shizz pulled from google calendar and exchange server.
RSS/News Reader - Currently using Pulse and I'm fairly happy with it but if there's a tablet optimized version of a better reader, I'd love to know what that is.
Calendar - Currently using Jorte and stock Calendar app. Again, the calendar looks weird on a screen as big and as expansive as the Nook's. I've tried Business Calendar but I don't like the way it looks. Can anyone suggest any other app?
Memo Widget - I own an LG Optimus One and I absolutely love the memo widget on it. It's very simple and you can type notes directly into the widget and you dont have to create a widget for each note you make. The widget allows you to page back and forth through the notes you have created. I tried using the same widget on my Nook but it looks ugly and blurred. I'm looking for a memo/note widget that does the exact thing but more optimized for a larger screen like that Nook's.
Messenger - I'm currently using YM for Android but I'd like to ask if there are any tablet optimized messengers that are compatible with YM and/or Microsoft Office Communicator.
Sorry, that seems like a lot but these little things have been bugging me hehe
Thanks in advance!

Hey pyronix,
For e-mail I use Kaiten Mail, a tablet optimized app by the K9 Mail folks. I love it but sadly it doesn't have a widget. It looks just like Mail'd:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.kaitenmail

LauncherPro Plus has nice scrollable widgets

Touch calendar pro has a great monthly widget that shows shared Google calendars in different colors. Not sure if it handles exchange though.

*sigh* yeah that's why i'm sticking to stock for now.

Yeah, I'd say Kaiten too but your hard requirement of Exchange is currently lacking. It does some, but not all, or maybe not the latest? Something...
For Calendar, have you tried Touch Calendar? You can change the zoom and font size initially to whatever you want, plus easy to pinch zoom. I use it all the time on my Nexus 1 and the NC. There's a free version to try out the app itself, the paid version also has a widget, but not sure if it'll show a whole month or not.
Pulse has a "tablet version" which has panes separated out to view stories and headlines, but it's a Honeycomb feature they're using.. Other versions of Android see the same interface they've had for a while, which IMO is pretty good and keeps getting better... I do wish they had a limit on how far you could scroll, I often way overscroll by accident. Taptu has that feature, but everything else about Taptu sucks

I'm a big fan of Pure Messenger, though I don't use it for IMs. The widget is highly customizable. You can see I've got it filling most of a homescreen with white text and transparent background.

All of the Pure widgets are really nice on the nook. I have pure grid calendar transparent on the home screen, It launched Business calender when I open it.
Pure messenger is also nice I have it set up for 3 separate widgets one for gmail, coolest part is you can open the email in a pop-up window right on the home screen. I have another set up for Facebook feeds, and a separate one for my corp. email. Check the last few pages of the nook screen shot thread there are lots of great screen shots of the pure widgets.

Whoops. Sorry, I didn't notice you were looking for Exchange support. As others have said it's the only thing Kaiten lacks. Otherwise it's pretty awesome.

Thanking everyone who replied to this thread
I am using S2 Calendar Widget right now but I will definitely check out the Pure apps later when I get home.
For instant messaging, I'm currently using imo.im which is A LOT better than the yahoo messenger client for android (and much stabler as well).
By the way, if any of you guys are looking for an OCS solution (Microsoft Office Communicator), I found this awesome app called Office Talk on the market. It's free and it works with both my clients' and my corp's office comm (I work for HP and provide IT services to Procter&Gamble lol).
I'm still stuck on stock for e-mail. :|
For memo, I'm attempting to use springpad but I really can't get myself to use it as part of my workflow yet. I really love the memo app that comes w/ the stock rom of my LG Optimus One but when I try to export it to the nook, it's as fugly as hell on the big screen.

That's Elixir, which is technically a system information app, but you can do anything and everything with the widgets. You can make a widget of nothing but app shortcuts, and the apps will be more closely spaced so that you get 3x5 shortcuts in a 2x3 space. The space-saving aspect is no big deal on the NC, but it does open up all kinds of new visual arrangements for grouping apps. I used to use it for toggling Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, too, before I realized those toggles are built into notifications.

Show off your streak! Screenshot thread

Howdy people,
I recently moved from a Nexus One to the Dell Streak best mobile decision of my life!
Thanks to DJ Steves 1.5.1 froyo rom , LauncherPro Plus and Meltus' Streak SMS LED mod, this phone is PERFECT!
I love using the phone in portrait instead of landscape and using Widget Locker for my lock screen, I have a portrait orientation lockscreen that unlocks to portrait orientation without refreshing the widgets.
The Nexus One had a big theming community with several people sharing their homescreens, screenshots and widget/dock combinations.
I'd love to see what the Streak community have done to customize their device!
So show off your goods!
I'll start us off

I really only like to use my streak landscape, except for when I'm using the Kindle app and widgetlocker or if the app forces me to use portrait. And if widgetlocker ever gets the ability to resize widgets I will change that to landscape also.

I have both devices; nexus one is a great phone and good for light browsing and great for glancing on info. Streak is a great pocketable tablet great for browsing, reading, writing blog and not awkward to use it as a phone if bluetooth headset is handy...
If you have the chance to keep both devices, don't even think further and if not definitely choose one or the other rather than thinking about purchasing a device which is cross breed promising best of all worlds; a large enough screen to play games and do all other stuff like a bmw x6

I also used to love my Nexus One and had both thinking I would switch between the two depending on the need. But the Streak was pocketable enough for me to keep as my primary phone.

I increased the density to 200. It makes everything nice on such a large screen. The stock was pretty but didn't take full advantage of the real estate.

As some of you are asking me for my themes, I compiled my wallpapers and you can download them (empty and modified) here : http://www.partage-facile.com/4FNYY0T1ZY/compil_theme.zip.html
For the utilisation, there are wallpaper modified with transparents shortcut using desktop visualizer. I created a guide in a french forum about the Streak (I'm one of the admins : memnoch), for those who understand the french, it could help you to create a theme like mines : http://streak.forumgratuit.fr/t292-...avec-icones-invisibles-exemple-theme-abstrait
For the theme called "streak", I used shortcut to the differents pages, using this guide (always in french) : http://streak.forumgratuit.fr/t501-tuto-navigation-entre-les-pages-du-home
If it interest a lot of people, I could try to translate theses guides, but it will not be easy for me, sorry.
@ willoxx, are you french ? If yes, take a look at this forum : http://streak.forumgratuit.fr/forum
Are you kidding, I am sure its going to be a instant hit. All the theme wicked. You have got to have a guide for us at the xda forum. Where have you been hiding....lol

[Q] What Launcher are you using?

Hello,
So I basically want to make a small survey that what launcher are you currently using and how is your battery life. I am trying to narrow down if some launchers are better for the battery life. I am currently using Touchwiz and get about 8 hours of moderate usage every day. Not good.
So how about you guys?
I used LauncherPro for a day but then removed it. It just hasn't evolved enough meanwhile TouchWiz, Sense UI and even MIUI have gone way ahead with their launchers. I don't think you will notice much difference in battery life between different launchers. LauncherPro renders stuff much faster but I don't like its appdrawer and dock.
Now I'm using TouchWiz until someone ports MIUI to SGS2.
GO, I prefer vertical scrolling to horizontal scolling in touchwiz and like that you can sort the apps alphabetically (who on earth tought it would be a good idea to make a horizontal scrolling app drawer and sort the apps by install time!?), also the running apps (+task killer) and recent apps tab are real handy
I'm gonna give Launcher Pro a go today. As for the scrolling, I quite like the horizontal scroll, but dislike it for seeming like the iPhone
By the way. How is the performance with some other launchers?
I used to have Go Launcher when using Desire. Now when I got this phone I first changed to Go Launcher also but then I noticed heavy battery usage and also some jerkiness with the scrolling, therefore I switched back to Touchwiz and still here. It is not THAT bad as everybody has been saying.
Launcher pro paid version.
Could have easily had 24hrs moderate use yesterday.
Tbh I don't think the launcher is one of the main factors affecting battery life though.

I noticed the similar jerkiness with the go launcher initially and ended up switching over to launcher pro for a bit. When i reinstalled go launcher to use the notification addon, transition was much better and the battery usage was on par with touchwiz
Builtin widgets are better with launcher pro but i like the notification addon for go launcher more.
I have both go launcher ex and launcher pro installed but the default launcher is set to go launcher

ADW Ex. Very pleased with it.
Currently 30% battery left after 2 days 3 hours, moderate use, but have removed or frozen a lot of bloat and/or stuff I don't use (Facebook, Twitter, games). Freezing TW launcher seems to have helped hugely wrt to battery life.
On KE2 stock.
I've got the following, adw launcher, go launcher ex,launcher 7, launcher pro, spb shell 3d and TW
Lol, for testing purposes
I usually use go launcher but have been trying regina 3d launcher, looks nice but i should imagine it would have more of a drain on the battery although im yet to confirm that.
ADW Launcher EX its the best choice for me, there are many themes you can use to customize it even more, the desktop scrolling efects are just great and i love the posibility to hide the main dock and the notifications bar, the screen just looks awesome then
Have had all the launchers mentioned already for a spin on the phone. I had been for the most part sticking with adw on the N1 but I was not able to get that to perform smoothly on this phone. Right now I'm actually using tw with most all of the wiz removed/frozen. I find I like it.
ADW EX. the only con is the no-bubbles on the dock. if I receive a message I can't see it in the dock, only in the notification bar.
I'm using Launcher Plus Pro. It's great, but it freezes on almost every boot. Have to wait a minute for force close to pop up, then it works beautifully. I suspect it's because the SGS2 is scanning the SD cards on every boot.
EDIT: Oh and I would have used TW4 if there was a way to alphabetically list apps.

There is an app on the market called sort apps that will sort the app drawer alphabetically. Requires root. Another thing I did was move the default home to center, instructions are available here. Hard to believe anyone thought that an unsorted app drawer was a good idea. lol

Can't find it. I've searched for "sort apps", "sortapp", "sortapps" & "sort app".
It popped up on mine (eu generic) used in the states. It also pops up if I just use touch wiz for the search terms.

[Q] Touchwiz's Calendar Widget - anything similar?

Since I only recently jumped on TSF Launcher, I've found that I've already gotten used to the great looking 5x5 calendar widget that came with Touchwiz. Much to my chagrin, it's only available when using Touchwiz.
Most of the calendar widgets in the market are either list type widgets, or not sized correctly to be displayed on this giant screen.
Has anyone come across a calendar widget that they like for the Note?
Jorte Calendar has a 5x5 monthly calendar widget. It's popular although i think it's a bit on the ugly side in terms of looks...but with time I think a lot of customization is possible.
You're right about the ugliness - not even close to Samsung's widget.
Deslandes has one called PURE Grid. I use PURE Messenger a lot and the functionality is always fantastic and it looks great. The biggest issue is if you're using Exchange. It'll work fine with Google, but it can't read your Exchange calendar on a Samsung device yet.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.koxx.pure_grid_calendar&hl=en
I personally love Jorte and don't find it ugly at all with some tweaks. A big requirement for me is that the widget has to be very functional. By making the widget completely transparent and using Google calendar colors, looks sweet to me!
Also, using the month+task view, I get all the information I need at once. The widget also adjusts to landscape view effectively.

Composed List of ICS Optimized Apps. (Media apps, Tools, Social apps, and Launchers)

With the new ICS leak, I've been trying to find apps that are optimized for Android Ice Cream Sandwich.
Here's a list that I'm putting together.
If you happen to find apps optimized for ICS, please post the app and the link to Google Play in here.
I try to keep away from well known apps such as Chrome, Youtube, Google Plus, Google Maps, etc. because well..
They're well known and are probably installed on your phone already.
My goal here is to expose apps that are Optimized for ICS to provide the best user experience.
Please hit the Thanks Button instead of clogging the thread with "thank you" posts!!!
The thread will be organized as followed:
Media Apps
Tools
Social Apps
Launchers
ICS Optimized Media Apps
MX Player
MX Player is a video playing app that offers Multi-Core Decoding.
Probably the best video player in the market.
On Gingerbread, HW Decoder would make the video laggy and unwatchable.
On ICS, HW Decoder on and Cropped Video, I experience no lag whatsoever. That's honestly a HUGE difference. Full 720p videos look amazing and are fluid.

Chrome is pretty well known, I try to put apps that aren't as popular. Try out ICS Browser +
Is chrome laggy for anyone else. I compared it to ics browser + in play store and that ics one is much smoother for scrolling. I like the interface and the idea behind chrome but that ics is def worth a test drive if you haven't already. Its pretty impressive.

Even tho I'm not a Note user, at least I know of some usable apps when I test out cm9 for my Atrix DD
Nemus launcher, runs smoother than butter. And its free! I bought the Nova Launcher and it was horrible, lag lag lag. Emailed their support and their response was " it runs smooth on their Intl Note, must be the Ics leak I got". Even tried reflashing ICS again with same Nova issues, waste of money.
Try the Nemus launcher u won't regret it.

Launcher for NOT rooted Verizon V10

I'm looking for a launcher that will work well with the Verizon V10 which is not rooted. I've always used Nova on my previous Samsungs. But with the V10 I'm having problems such as an inability to keep a record of the number of texts, phone calls etc, except on the lock page. There is also the issue of widgets being "buried" under windows unless made smaller, and a seeming inability to add app notifications to the lower bar.. There is an overall feel they are not "made for each other".
I had a similar experience with Sola launcher.
My primary wish is to be able to add more fonts to the very skimpy choices made available by LG, change icons and names and size icons.
Is anyone using a launcher on their VZ V10 without the above Nova problems and with the ability to add fonts and icons?
thanks.

Long time Nova user, now using it on V10. I'm not entirely sure I understand the issues that you're having.
For example, when you say 'keep a record of the number of texts, phone calls, etc..." are you talking about missed calls/texts, etc. ? Because I'm not having any issues with that. I'm also not sure what you mean by 'adding app notifications to the lower bar'. If by lower bar you mean the dock area, and again, if you're talking about e.g., missed calls, texts, etc., they are working for all apps I use, including those that I have in the dock area.
Not sure what you're referring to w/respect to items being 'buried', perhaps you can clarify.
In general, the only issue that I'm having with Nova Launcher (I should mention that I'm using the pro-version and more often than not have the latest beta running), is that certainwidgets that came with the device and are available via the default launcher (e.g., LG Health/fitness meter) are not available as widgets in Nova.

My experience with the Nova Notifier is that it is not registering text messages, nor voice mails although I didn't have this problems with my Samsungs. Whether it's really Nova, or Verizon's endless efforts to lock up their phones, I'm not sure.
What I meant by hiding the widgets is this: when you tap the LG circle with dots to see all installed apps and widgets, there are two tabs - one for apps and the second for thumbnails of all widgets loaded directly and loaded by apps.
But after I installed Nova there was only one tab for apps and it did include the two specific widgets I had been using. I eventually discovered that if you minimize all the screens, there is an icon for widgets and it shows everything. But they were hidden from my view until I discovered this.
However, being unable to get the notifications right was still a grave concern and so I'm sadly looking further.
As per the previous answer, I have installed Apex. It doesn't seem to provide as many options but if the notifier works, that will be a big step. I tried Nova twice and had the same difficulties with notification so I'm hesitant.
Are you using Verizon or might this be the result of different carriers "adjusting" different things? Or....I did something wrong?

I'm on Verizon as well.
Nova gets to widgets differently than the LG launcher, you don't do it from apps. You can get there a couple ways, the easiest is to long-press your home screen until the 'previews' screen comes up and then hit Widgets (screen shot attached). Make sure the default behavior is set accordingly.
For notifications, do you have Tesla Unread installed and configured correctly? More relevant screen shots attached.
Finally, you may want to hit the Nova forum on XDA, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1389071 lots of good info there.

Thanks so much for the screen shots - I found my icons and put them in place in a two minutes!
BUT - I'm getting the counter for messages on the lockscreen and it is counting correctly. I cannot get a counter for messages on the bottom bar of the home screen. In your example you have counters on BlueMail and on the Email app. I've kept the bottom bar that is under the page dots.
I went to my apps and moved the messaging app to the home screen. I then removed the text. I then dragged it to the bar under the page dots. It will bring up my messages but it doesn't get "notified" of the number of unread messages I have. Am I supposed to use another kind of icon? I don't have a messaging widget. Do you also have a lock screen and do you get your notification numbers there as well?
I couldn't get a screenshot of the lockscreen but here is a screenshot of my homescreen which I'm about to put together again with Nova. Well I guess not, it won't paste. I hope my verbal description was clear enough
I do have Tesla Unread installed. I have SMS (the yellow one) on, missed calls on and hangouts off. I have nothing under gmail and I have the stock email turned off because I use AquaMail and Tesla says they consider it an API app.
I have notification bar watch turned on and under applications I DON'T HAVE THE YELLOW MESSAGING AP PRESENT AT ALL?, I have phone and voice mail turned on and that's it. But where did the listing for messaging go - and how would I put it back?

I'm using the Verizon message+ app instead of the yellow LG, not sure if that matters. It was preloaded and is decent.
One thing to check, take note of whether the settings in your sms app might be marking your text messages as 'read' after previewing them on your lock screen.
Other than that, you might want to reset your Nova settings to default. Not sure if it matters or not, but I do have Nova set to Aggressive Desktop.
More screen shots attached, including showing my sms notification (sms is currently grouped with contacts in the dock so I'm showing that it works grouped and expanded)

The settings on the sms app WERE to be marked as read after appearing on the lock screen. And I didn't even want them on my lockscreen! Reset and all is well. Thank you so much for sticking with these issues and figuring out ways for me to resolve them. Nova is really fast on the V10 and such a good launcher. I'm glad I'm able to use it. BTW, I use 1Weather also - it's great fun!
Great that you got everything working, glad I could help.
I know I'm late to the game and you got it working because after reading post 1 I was also going to say I had no issues with Nova Prime. I ran Nova the first couple weeks on my V10 but since then I've been running TSF. I've always gone back and forth between Nova and TSF and so far I'm really digging TSF on the V10.
I'm sorry if I'm a little late to the game as well, but I had the same problem with the notifications on my Samsung Note 2. I ended up getting an app called "Missed It!" from the Play Store. After adding apps to it's settings, I was getting accurate notifications in icons. It's even listed in Nova settings as an alternative to TeslaUnread. You may want to try it.
