external portable hard drives do they work? - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm just wondering if the external portable hard drive USB would work on the G Tablet. Or a flash drive USB ?

Yes they do. There are a number of threads in the General section on this. I've used a 100Gb portable hard drive on my GTablet.

Yep. The externals need to be powered via AC if they're spinning disks. Flash drives don't.

I've had trouble with an external drive formatted to NTFS. I'm fairly sure that if it's formatted to Fat32 it'll be fine.

External NTFS-formatted drives work fine as long as you only want to read them. Writing to NTFS filesystems using the kernel filesystem module is still, erm, experimental.
See this post to find out how.

ssd drive
Anyone know if ssd drives will work?

Which external hard drive?

I have bought a USB adaptor for the tablet, and have succesfully attached an external hard disk.
I formatted the disk (a 1.5tb powered drive) with a 500gb fat32 partition and it read it ok. I then set the partition to 1.5tb fat32 and the tablet did not see it.
What is the best size to go for, and is there a recommended drive for use with the tablet?

Connect external harddisk

How can I connect External harddisk on Sony Tablet S. Using an OTG cable, I can connect Pendrive. But it doesn't detect harddisk

An ext HDD has to have it's own power supply. The tab ain't powerful enough to run a simple plug and play ext HDD.

I frequently use without problem two different Western Digital My Passport Essential 500 GB USB-powered hard drives (p/n WDBACY5000ABK-00) with a Sony Tablet S. I use a Sony SGPUC1 USB cable to connect the hard drives to the tablet. The hard drives are formatted FAT32, which is required for the tablet to be able to access the hard drives; that is, without modifying its kernel.
I suspect your problem is your hard drive is not formatted as FAT32. If that is the case, you will need to format your hard drive as FAT32. Microsoft Windows (any version) cannot format large capacity hard drives as FAT32, so you will need to use a third-party formatting tool.
If your tablet has root access, another option is installing a NTFS kernel module. For information on downloading and installing the NTFS kernel module, read THIS thread. This supposedly will allow the tablet to access hard drives formatted as NTFS.

NTFS 64GB w/ Paragon - Filesystem issues/ Mass Storage

So I formatted my 64gb sd card to ntfs and using paragon android can use the ntfs sd card. My issue is why doesn't it auto-mount when turning off mass storage? I have to mount it manually to "automatic" mode to /mnt/sdcard. So it's a pain getting mass storage to show the 64gb drive and when it does show up within 5 minutes of copying files the drive disappears from windows and fails to work. I have to set the phone to charge only, then mount paragon. Then go mass storage and it will then show up again only to fail shortly during writing.
On top of all that when I browse to view the files, they don't exist in the sdcard like the files and folders I clearly copied aren't showing up. However some folders and files show up. I don't get why mx video player doesn't see any video files in /mnt/sdcard/media/movies when I clearly copied 2 files into it and they don't show up at all...
It's a Sandisk class 10 uhs 1 64gb stick
format it as fat32
problem solved.
you should need a reason to have it as ntfs what files are you trying to put on that are over 4gb because that would be the only reason why you would.

Yeah my Galaxy note 2 can handle all hd formats like .mkv so I wanna put my 8gb .mkv's on there to watch in flawless uncompressed quality.
What's up with Paragon? Or what u know... Like it stops working after 5 minutes of transferring files
No idea but android doesn't play nicely with ntfs. Use exfat.

Does exfat work with windows? I need to be able use usb mass storage but I guess i could just use wifi transfer it's slow but better than nothing...
exfat support 4GB+ file limit right?
What's up with paragon? ppl have said it works good but it's clear to me that's it's extremely problematic.
Exfat came with windows 7 and supports 4gb plus.
I haven't tried paragon, it also could be a kernel issue.

Not sure Android supports exFAT. FAT32 is your best and safest bet, even though it has limitations.
new kernel didn't fix the issue so i guess i have to use fat32... i dont see why paragon is messing up
what about usb otg?
*UPDATE*
I fixed the problem by plugging the usb cable directly into the usb port rather than through the 6' usb extension.
So NTFS is working flawlessly and I already copied over a 4.5GB .mp4 in 1080p and it works perfectly

[Q] Can not read NTFS formatted MicroSD Card Via USB OTG card reader

I have a 2-in-1 USB OTG Card reader. I formatted my 16 GB strontium micro sd card with NTFS. But when I connect the card via USB OTG card reader, phone says "USB card is either blank or format not supported." But it works when formatted as FAT32. Does K900 support NTFS formatted internal storage and external (via OTG) storage. Has anyone tried connecting a portable HDD via USB OTG??

Try formatting it FAT32, that'll take care of your problem.

You can use paragon ntfs&hfs. Get it from playstore. Root access needed. I always use it to access files from my 500Gb external HDD

Thanks for your reply. I have not rooted my phone, but it will be useful for my other phone. ... ... ... (I actually download a lot of torrents and I don't want to keep my PC running. I use "Flud" torrent app to download torrents, developed by a xda member.)

Pendrive as Internal?

I have been looking for info and i don't even know right now if i can do this or how to do.
With Android 6.0 i read some info about formating an external OTG drive as internal storage. This is for example, to move apps to the drive, isn't it?
I have a pendrive OTG with microusb, and pluged into my nexus 9, but it's formated just for data. When i try to format from the tablet there is no more option that to format in the same way, just for data.
Theres is something wrong? something hidden? i'm just mistaken with this functionality?
Thank you in advance!

Not recommend for OTG pendrive and questionable for SD cards.
