Gorilla glass still scratches. The evo has gorilla glass, and is scratchable. I have had a screen protector on my evo since day one. My step dad got his two months ago and, scratched like crazy.

Guess it all depends on how careful you are with your phone. I've had my hd2 for 14 months. It has gorilla glass. Not one scratch. Looks the way it did the day I bought it.
I am kind of surprised that people still use this stuff. Have had my Hero from day one and not a scratch on it (I don't believe his is gorilla glass either, heck I don't even have a case for it and only problems are from the buttons wearing off).
I also wonder if putting a screen protector on it will change the 3D effects going on.
oh yea, good question. i thought about that, but what the heck, its only $11
I used a zagg on my hero for a long time. Then it got some sorry of crap on it that wouldn't come. So I removed it and went with just the screen. I must admit, at first I was thoroughly surprised with its durability but it did scratch. Twice. Big deep ones. And I don't even know how. I keep it in a body glove case and I take good care of it.
Idk, I think screen protectors are a good thing but its just personal preference I guess.

I also used Zagg on my Evo and also on my wife's. Ended up going naked on the screens and neither one of ours have scratches on the screens. Just can't keep in your pocket with change or keys etc.

Here comes the gorilla glass argumemt again. Have you never seen an iphone with a scratched screen? Ive seen countless that are just terrible. Gorilla glass can be scratched by sand and their is sand in dirt and probably in your pocket. It might be harder to break but i dont think its too much harder to scratch.

If the gorilla glass doesnt effect it i dont think a screen protector will. Surely we would of heard reports of that by now with the optimus 3d. The matte ones could have some sort of effect.

Nope.
1) There's no direct correlation between brittle and hard. An advanced material, like Gorilla Glass, *may* be harder and less brittle at the same time compared to regular glass.
2) If I remember correctly, all Gorilla Glass demonstrations of the past involved smashing a small piece with a hammer. Gorilla Glass is definitely less brittle than regular glass.

Meanwhile, the weight and size are unusual in part because of its large multi-touch screen with a size reaches 4.3 inches diagonally and getting the same HTC Sensation resolution (540 x 960 pixels). This display is for displaying images in three dimensions without requiring the user to buy special glasses separately, in addition to the glass used is Gorilla Glass, a material highly resistant to both scratches and bump

Glass would be brittle. It is just the nature of ceramic materials.
In this test you talking about. Was the glass suspended by two support point with the impact load being in the middle? Or was the middle slowly being pushed down?
these mobile glass test should be done horizontally normal to a side or corner. to imitate a fall. A normal load from the surface test is for test people punching their phones or a stressful push.
Would anyone here know the density of our screen? Maybe it is the same as the corning glass but from a different manufacture.

Also, I was in a sprint store today, and the rep scratched a Motorola photon screen with a set of keys, repeatedly to show how resistant the screen is. No damage. Said they've been doing it every day for fun. But, does Evo have same glass as photon? Rep didn't know and I've never investigated.

Hmm, this is interesting. So, wouldn't it make sense that if a manufacturer as big and as marketing savvy as HTC was going to sell a flagship phone such as this that came equipped with GG/GG II, they would be advertising it as a selling point? Not trying to troll my own thread but it seems like they've done this in the past with their other phones as well. I wonder why?

Mine is built into my Otterbox case. I forget which model, I'll have to look for you, and I absolutely hate it. It's raised very slightly off my screen so I have to press down a with a little more effort, it hinders my typing speed. I'm planning on taking an exacto blade and taking out the screen protector and using one of the regular ones, but damn it I always get air bubbles

You have an otterbox defender. And I'm considering doing the same thing. I'm thinking of getting one of those "wet apply" screen protectors to avoid getting bubbles. I might just get a ghost armor next time I go to the mall.

I wanted a ZAGG invisible shield, as I had one for the HTC EVO V 4G and it was the 1st screen protector I used, it was great quality. I searched everywhere and could not find one for the DNA, only 1 store on Amazon had it and it got bad reviews. I decided to go with the Armor Military Grade one. Had it on for a couple days, so far feels just as great as the ZAGG.

It doesn't take away from the display and fits perfect and is easy to put on. I ordered mine off amazon and got it cheaper than 12$ at the time. Word! I can't stand the feel of screen protectors. The feel of the glass in way better. I treat my phone like a baby, and sit in an office all day. I guess if I were out in the field I might put a protector on it. But this is the whole point of all this high-tech glass, to make them virtually impossible to break or scratch.

Glass is glass. It will still shatter with enough force (not that a screen protector would save it from that). But even still, small particles of sand and rock and such can still easily scratch the screen. Don't believe its scratch proof when its scratch resistant.

My guess is it would probably work with a high end hole punches which is extremely sharp and wont bend the protector while punching..
Any thoughts?

Gorilla Glass wasn't meant to hold an impact of a fall regardless of it being from only 6 inches. It was meant to absorb getting hairline scratches from everyday use.

It's crazy cause I have dropped phones from a huge distance and been okay and then other times I have dropped them from a couple feet and they broke. It's all in how they land but that is why I have purchased a glass screen protector for all of my latest devices cause it's a small price to pay to know that your phone screen will make it through a drop. Sorry to hear though! It sucks royally! Good luck to ya...
Everything works. It just sucks it happened like that; in a case and from just a mere 12 inches high.

I feel bad for you - I have had that happen with other phones and I know that sinking feeling you get in your stomach as soon as you realize the screen is cracked - I am hoping you had insurance?
That really sucks, sorry to hear about your phone. Looks like I'll be investing in another tempered glass screen protector. They really do help against cracks. I dropped my note 3 from about 4 feet and the screen protector shattered, but my screen was untouched. I was amazed.

I'll get in touch with T-Mobile and find out my options. All I know is that I thought I did the right thing, got a case right away, but it didn't help.

Ouch! So sorry to hear this, man. Best of luck. I hope you can work them for a replacement.

Bummer man, all in how it lands, even with a case there's always a chance that the shock will hit just right (or wrong). I don't even bother with cases anymore because I always see people with their shattered phone screens in big cases. I think cases are probably the best for avoiding nicks to the body of the phone, but most are not gonna prevent a cracked screen.
i think if you didn't have the case, the screen would have shattered to an extent of being unusable, so it could have been worst. Typically, decent cases protect small falls due to the case's lip. I guess you were very unlucky.

Well you can still purchase insurance or a extended warranty. Also, if you purchased the phone with a premium credit card, your credit card company will fix it for you for free.
All of the broken screen threads blame the phone, and it always seems to be some ridiculous drop. "I dropped my phone two inches onto a pile of cotton balls and unicorn fur...screen shattered".
Gorilla glass is not break resistant, it is scratch resistant. It sucks that your screen is broken, but in no way is it Corning's or Samsung's fault.

Been SO curious about the glass screen protectors. you like them? I have always used the PET (hard plastic ones not the 3m film) and think they are great. Does the glass ones scratch less than the PET film ones?
OP, that really sucks man! However, If you dont want to use insurance (its probably about a $150 deductible) if you can live with it for a couple weeks, replacement glass should start popping up on ebay and such. I have replaced glass for many friends on a lot of different phones and its SUPER easy. You can usually buy a kit with the tools you need and everything for less than $20. :good:

Yes and they last for a very long time assuming you don';t chip the glass and you put it on properly. I had mine on for almost a year without any issues on the M7.
@shojus thanks for the info
