[SURVEY] Gingerbread Bootloop - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

*This thread can not solve, prevent, or explain bricking and is more about bootloops and random reboots than permanant damage*
In reading over a couple threads about bootloops I have noticed a few common occurances:
Tethering
Overclocked
Long charge time
And all these things have one factor in common. Heat. Given computers go into boot loops when they heat up too much, this got my attention.
My current setup is the lowest voltages I could get the phone to run at, overclocked to 1.2 on battery only, and stock during battery use. It is also set to disable EVERYTHING but texting and calls during screen off. I do not tether and when it gets hot I put it in standby until it cools off.
SetCPU does offer a tempurature feature, which is why I am curious to know how many people with issues had hot phones at the time...?
Edit: I have read the possible EMMC (not sure if I have that right) getting fried. I have not experienced the permanant loop and this is not the issue I am trying to study. Please refer to the brick threads for that issue.

I didn't have the bootloop issue I! have noticed when my phone rebooted on me it was hot. ever since I stick my phone in the car AC plus I live in Phoenix and that doesn't help my phone
Sent from my ThunderBolt using XDA App

I tethered a ton today with 4G on my phone and pulled 15 GB through it in 5 hours. Rebooted 3 times total and heated up a ton. Seems normal otherwise though (froyo stock rooted, reverted from the leak yesterday)

THE "bricked" bootloop issue is directly related to the emmc in my opinion, and that of others I respect.
It is likely due to substandard chips being used in some production runs.
Use of some firmware may accelerate the failure.

If heat was truly the case how come Froyo bolts aren't randomly going into the bootloop of death?

I would imagine people running Gingerbread flash roms far more often, putting more strain on the inferior memory chips as they are written far more than others.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App

I had a similar experience when my touchscreen went out in my first TB
So I believe it's a hardware failure as well because my old TB acted as people are describing with these bricks minus the hboot reboots
So EMMc makes sense
Tho I still not reverting to froyo
>--The Game--<

Regardless of the EMMC issue, I still think heat is something people need to take notice of.
Personally I use SetCPU to warn me when I've gone too high (45C), which immediately unclocks (and subsequently undervolts) the phone.
Don't be burning up them Bolts now

Sorry OP as this is way off topic. Thanks for contributing to Verizon's decision to go to a tiered data plan like CrapT&T.

Even tho i agree that we shouldnt be abusing the 4g speeds, whats the point of advertising unlimited data if its not unlimited? He paid for that service, and hes using it, i dont see the big issue myself. I use my 4g tethering for netflix on the pc's at home and it uses quite a bit of bandwidth im sure.

Sorry jcase your rite about the chips probably but my phone hit 124. Not overclocked on 2.2 I run of at 1920. It never got above 115

I strongly doubt it. I feel like this issues is going to be spread out. There are multiple people running "day1" phones that are rooted and booted w/ the GB radio that haven't had issues, and many are reporting the "good" EMMC ID.

Thanks.

Bricked is happening on some phones, but reboots and bootloops have been happening on ALL phones. This was simply a survey of heat to prevent bootloops and random reboots, not an attempt to resolve the brick issue.

[Q] What caused my sudden overheat & battery drain today?

Hello,
I've had my GS II for about a week, and the battery life has been pretty stellar, except for days where I work at the office. For some reason, there, the battery drains at about 2x the rate than in other areas. A very similar thing happened with my Captivate, but the battery lasts longer with the GS II.
However, today, at around 1PM, my phone started heating up so that it was hot to the touch, and the battery drained 60% in about 1.5 hours. Something went terribly wrong. And even plugged in, it was draining faster than it could charge!
How can I find out what happened? I don't want this to happen again.
The only thing I did was listen to a podcast with BeyondPod, but I do that every day at work over lunch. So, nothing new in my utilization.
Any ideas appreciated!
Thanks,
Jon

Thanks, but GPS was not on. Neither was WiFi. Just Bluetooth. It's the same settings I have every day at work, because Tasker sets my settings automatically based on cell tower location.

I had a similar experience today. I was talking on the phone when the top of the phone got really hot. Like it hurt my ear to hold the phone against it. And then the phone rebooted. Since then it's been running phone. Need to figure out what caused it though. Might be a similar issue. But my battery life has been pretty good though. Can easily make it through a day with moderate to heavy use.
I am running CM 7.1. Not sure if that had anything to do with it. But even if it did, there is no way I am going back to stock.

Unfortunately, AOS often falsely reports high. Sometimes high AOS usage is fine, sometimes it's not.
I've gotten some of my best battery life with AOS at 60%.
Can't tell what happened to you without some statistics.

Yeah, this sounds very similar to what happened to me, but with stock ROM.
Two follow-on questions:
1. If it's ROM-independent, then could it be something in the hardware that's short-circuiting? Like... the cellular chipset, or perhaps the modem firmware?
2. Can you explain what about CM 7.1 is so superior to the stock rom, which I'm finding pretty fantastic at the moment?
Thanks,
Jon

Sh1t happens. That's the way it was with multiple Windows Mobile phones I had in the past and it is obviously the way it is with multiple Android phones I have now. Usually a quick reboot of the phone will resolve the problem. As long as it didn't happen again persisitently, you are fine.
The cause is somewhere some app or service was stuck in a bad place that uses a lot of CPU or data or both. This will cause phone heats up and battery darin faster. Unless you have full dev environment and logging on the phone, it is virtually impossible to track it down.

Yeah, but does this kind of thing happen to iPhones and WinPho phones? Just curious. I am trying to convince friends & family that with the GS II, Android has finally reached parity with iOS. Perhaps not quite yet... ??
i never had battery drain but once in a while I do notice my phone gets hot on the back cover in between the SGS logo and the camera while I'm using it. If I put it down for a bit, it cools off. I figured it was just hot from use and I never thought anything more of it.

What make you think GS2 is any better than other Android phones in this regard? Anyone can make a mistake or two in programming and it is impossible to write bug free code.
Remember, latest Android Gingerbread OS is 2.3.7 and we are at 2.3.4. There are a lot of bug fixes (and new bugs) in each incremental release from Google alone. On top of that you have Samsung's customization code and various apps you installed.

It does happen to iPhones for sure. We switched from blackberry devices to the iPhone, at work, three months ago. We had five different devices experience similar heat and battery issues. The cause is typically from apps or services that sync with online data.

Random rebooting???

Has anyone else noticed that the Photon seems to self reboot at odd times. I have yet to have it reboot on me while using it, but my wife's Photon has rebooted on her during active use.
Anyone else experiencing this?
No, but you leave alot of unanswered questions. Is your wife rooted? what is she running (app's) that you are not running?
I have heard of this before and if i remember, delete everything and start new, just putting a few app's at a time back on. When it starts acting up, you found your app!

Shockingly enough, I did suddenly get that twice yesterday after updating YouTube. However I've been unable to reproduce it with any level of consistency at this point.
For the two Photons I have access too (both are doing the same thing), one is rooted one is not.
Apps in common are:
Enhanced email.
ADW Launcher
Car Home.
My feeling is that more people are having this issue they just don't know about it... I found it because I went to recently used apps and there were none, then I started to watch it...

I've experienced it a couple of times while playing music. A song would be playing and then it would suddenly reboot.
I'm using Google Music...
I've heard of that happening before the 154 update came out. So not sure if you're on the latest OTA or Leak why you'd be getting it, unless as someone mentioned it was an app. Which is possible I s'pose.
i did noticed that when the phone is in the charger, when i take a call
while the phone plugged in i hear no voice and the phone reboots
the phone was pretty hot when it happens so i can assume it's a heat problem
(in my case)
Mine has been rebooting more and more frequently. I went to Sprint today and had them order me a replacement. I'm hoping the new one does not have this issue.
Have you tried wiping data and cache then installing the latest leak?

What latest leak? The 198_7?
Yes sir. That's the latest leak/OTA update. Though the reboot issue was fixed for most people with the 154 update. I previously had that issue as well. So you could try that, but not saying it will for sure fix it. That's really the only idea I have, unless you try uninstall your apps and see if it's an app related issue.
Had same famous random reboot issue, after 154 update and a wipe.
Exchanged for new Photon at Best Buy (no hassle swap) 3-4 weeks ago, So far no random reboots. For me, I believe it was hardware related, noticed the phone was getting fairly warm around the same time the random reboots started happening.

I guess it could be hardware related, but that WAS a known issue when the first Photons came out. I had to exchange mine three times due to the reboot issue before the tech told me it was a reported and known issue and they would be releasing a fix for it.
My Evo 4G and EVO 3D both did this sometimes (both stock, not rooted, hardly any 3rd party apps) when signal strength was low.
My Photon does it much less often (did it once today though, but I'm in Canada roaming). My Photon is rooted, but pretty vanilla.
I have gone with all of the OTA's, and have yet to have a reboot.

There was some dude who had this issue and he stuck a business card at the space near the top of the battery to keep it lodged with the connections near the bottom. Supposed ly this worked....but you probably want to get a phone that works straight up.

I don't see how the hardware could have messed up within a few hours. This was not happening with other roms, I flashed MeanROM less than 4 hours ago. Everything booted up fine, and from what I can see there is nothing wrong with it except for that small issue. I haven't full tested as I'm scared of actually getting shocked.. lol

Perhaps, that's not funny though and rather rude. There was no need to use such a term, as there is plenty of other things you could have said.
All flaming aside, the guys are trying to say something. There is no real way for the ROM to be the cause of a continuous hardware problem such as that. "Getting Warmer" makes sense because of things the Kernel may be doing or RAM intensive background tasks , but a camera button creating an electric shock because of a ROM no. To prove this point (and what you could have done before making the thread specific about MeanROM) is flash a different ROM, and see the problem still persisting

If I take it to Sprint, would my insurance(TEP) cover it even though I rooted? Also, I understand that ROMs should not cause severe hardware issues but, as I'm still a newbie, it was something which I needed some suggestions. On a side note,I've been running the ROM for a few days now and the issue went away after I removed battery and has not come back. The ROM is great and the battery life is amazing, 4 hours of Netflix on 3G at 50-75% brightness for 90%. My battery then lasted another 5 hours on the last 10% with a few calls, texts, and data.
Thanks to all for the suggestions, will keep looking into it and continue reading.

no sprint will not support the phone if they see if its root. they will tell you to reload the stock software. the only way they would support it is if you drop it in water or something where the phone didn't turn on anymore. because at that point they don't know or would know if it was rooted.

Battery Jumps

I have been wandering around XDA now for about the last 3 months looking for my problem and no one seems to have the same issue...
When my battery gets down to 20%, it immediately jumps to 15%.
I'm not new to this, I've tried several ROMs and several kernels. I got the firmware patch hoping that the issues would go away. I've had random battery ups and downs.. sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad, but never consistent and acceptable. When I say "good" I'm referring to about 6 hours of very light use.
If anyone could point me in the right direction, I would be grateful.
Currently running CleanROM DE with Firmware patch.

I have a 3.7... But this is my second battery, the first one was a 3.8...
It did not do it when I bought it stock, or even when I started rooting it. It started after about the 3rd ROM I put on it, and I've never been able to get rid of it. It does get hot, but its not really out of the norm.. (most dual core phones with 4g are going to get warm, 4g takes an extreme amount of energy to use)
I can't believe this hasn't been brought up earlier... I was only hesitant to bring it up in development because I didn't want to be accused of not using the search button.

It has been brought up, but people said that it's a bad battery. I'm not convinced it's battery, I think there's something more going on. It happened to me, stock, out of the box, and with multiple batteries.
Here's a thread I posted about this a few months ago-- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1514134
Run the battery down until the device powers down on its own, this will not hurt the device or battery. Keep the phone off and let the battery charge up fully. Do this a few times....
I have not had this issue myself with the rezound. On previous devices I did the above and it seemed to work out the issues

Just read your post... you're right... not much help there. And I agree, I can't see a brand new battery that's never been used or re-calibrated showing the same "symtoms" as the old battery. It has got to be something not hardware related. All my brothers have Rezounds and I actually let one of them use my battery and it didn't do it in their phone, so a bad battery is out of the question I think.

The one I swapped with has the same exact ROM as I do as well as the same kernel. The only difference may be his recovery. I think he has one version newer Amon Ra than I do... but I've been using the same recovery since the beginning, and it started doing this well after flashing that recovery.

Run the battery down until the device powers down on its own, this will not hurt the device or battery. Keep the phone off and let the battery charge up fully. Do this a few times....
I have not had this issue myself with the rezound. On previous devices I did the above and it seemed to work out the issues

I've done that with other ROMs in the past for this same issue, but not with this new ROM and firmware. I'll be sure to give that a try tomorrow when it dies... it just got a full charge. Thanks for reminding me of that little trick.

are you using 4g/3g when this occurs?, WiFi, which band?, powersave mode?, basically all the settings.....
Does it do this at 100% stock, not even signing in to your google account or updating apps.
Have you tried a different sdcard? Be surprised how this little piece if plastic can crush a system.

What is different about those rezounds from yours? Unlocked, rooted, stock, pure stock, launcher, apk/apps? All of these or one could have a factor.....

It happened to me stock, out of the box. It happened to me stock rooted debloated, happened to me unlocked s-on, happened to me s-off. Happened to me on GB firmware. Happened to me ICS firmware. It's obviously a problem bigger an an apk or an app.

using primarily 4g, no wifi (N when I do), no powersave mode. Thinking back, it started with the first ROM that had powersave mode. Since then I've always disabled that feature hoping it would go away, all with no luck.
It never did it when it was stock, I certainly don't want to revert it back to check now. Haven't checked when initially setting up after a flash, so I don't know if Google affects it at all.
Haven't tried a different SD card. Though I may take it out and see how it behaves after I do a dead charge on it.

It's not your SD card. Your SD card has nothing to do with your battery jumping, I promise you. If I had to guess, I'd say it's something with the kernel, but what do I know. It should be more wide-spread if it's the kernel.

I agree. That makes me wonder if it has anything to do with the SIM card.

Hmm. I have an extra, unused SIM in its package here, I'll pop it in tomorrow and run my battery down, see if it happens. Not sure why it'd be the SIM though.. got a theory?
Simcards do go bad, as do sdcards.

For sure, but why would that cause either inaccurate battery readings, or massive power drain? It's actually not really clear which one it is, of those options, but it'd have to be absolutely enormous power drain to go from 25%-14% in a short period. So how would a SIM or SD card cause inaccurate battery readings? I ask because I have no idea, not being snarky.

[HELP] Rezound overheating

Ever since I got my rezound, it overheats whenever I'm actually using it for apps. Phone temps normally are around 33°C-36°C but my phone gets up to around 45°C under load. Any tips on a fix or anything? I read somewhere updating radios was supposed to help, but it didn't.

Call Verizon and get a new one as it is a known issue. No fix on user end.
Keep calling and complaining about the same issue. You probably can eventually get a newer more expensive device (only refurbished).
Damn
Damn, that sucks. I bought it on Craigslist, so no warranty
I was about to ask too, but I got mine for free, so no warranty.

Replacing wont help either, I have had over 7 rez's same problem.
Are you Stock or custom Rom?
If your on a custom Rom, try one of Snuzzo's kernels
It helps
Mine even gets up past 55c when using skype
I've found that lowering the Max frequencies of both cores a bit delays the effect somewhat.
