[Q] AOSP Browser on Sense - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I did a search on this forum, and I've seen some posts on other forums about this, but nothing I've tried so far has worked. Is it possible to get the AOSP Browser on a Sense ROM (I'm running BAMF 1.7 right now). The HTC browser is worthless, and I'm not a fan of the various market replacements (I've tried DolphinHD, Firefox, Skyfire, both Opera's, and Miren). In my opinion the AOSP broswer is near perfect. Minimal overhead, does its job and that's all. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks

no idea, but you can try to pull the .apk from any AOSP rom or from CM7 and use adb to push the file.
on a side note id love it devs enabled the about:debug option standard on all browser so i have easy access to the UAString

Already tried that. I've pulled the browser from CM7 and from 'de-sensed' builds. I delete the old browser (actually just rename), reboot, push the new browser to /system/app, and install. Install works fine, but the browser just FC's upon load. Anyone got any ideas? I've read its difficult because of all the tweaks made to the HTC browser, but it must be possible since some de-sensed ROMs use it. I just don't know where to make edits to prevent FCs.

I use this Rom manager install from Teslacoil and it works perfect with DB 1.63. Do not try it with GB, it will fail hard!

Thanks, I am going to give it a shot now.

good i like this

Don't forget to repair permissions then reboot. Works for me. Also make sure your using something like root explorer with mount on when your switching apks in the system folder.
My bad that's if you use the apks from an older post on the forum so just ignore if your using the one posted above.

Firefox Mobile- Great Tablet Browser?

So now that the new Firefox 4 Beta 5 is out, I personally think Firefox is the best Tablet browser available. Its unique approach to tabs works well on a tablet, as does the back button. The earlier versions were super slow, but I think this new one has caught up a lot. I now prefer it greatly to Dolphin HD.
I have installed the following add-ons to maximize my Nook Color internet use:
-Quit Fennec- force closes after last tab closes, a must
-Phony- easy User Agent changer, another must
-readability- fixes messy pages to fit
-Full Screen- Does what it says and makes browsing a joy
What do you all think?
I agree. Seems stable and fast (compared to Dolphin). I also used Sync to import all my passwords and favorites from my desktop.
I'll give it a try, it was even slower and klunkier than Dolphin HD last time I tried it, I use Opera 10 on my NC and it's great. I've tried Mirin too but something about that browser bugs me, can't really put my finger on it.
Can you guys post an apk? I can't get to it from market or Mozilla's website.
Thanks for the tip. Every browser seems to have 1 thing wrong with it so ill definitely give this one a try. I would like opwlera best but i can't get over the terrible way it handles initial zoom.
I agree, I can't find a working link to download the apk. I fennec but it installed an update that didn't work and now I can't install Firefox. Bummer
Would appreciate the apk as well. Thanks
FTP is your friend, as old-school as it is.
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.o...roid-r7/en-US/fennec-4.0b5-en-US.eabi-arm.apk
Thanks for the link. But everytime I try to install this, it seems to progress, asks about permissions, but at the end, says "program not installed". I've enabled usb debugging, used titanium backup to uninstall the previous left overs of Fennec, and I still get this message. A little stumped.
is this compatible with Android 2.1 with the latest dalingrin OC? I cannot get the apk to install. launched the Package Installer and installation would not get through saying "Application not installed"
Also each time I start the installer, it would warn that the app will replace an existing appl, but i do not currently have a fennec/firefox appl installed. Titanium Backup does not show any fennec/firefox app.
Can someone help please?
thanks
finally able to install by tweaking the the build.prop as suggested here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=938114&highlight=firefox
if anyone else was having the same problem. that tweak fixed it for me.
I gave this a try based on this thread. While I do like the UI and it has a snappy response, the app itself is not ready for prime-time. If you try to enter numeric information into a field, it causes the insertion point to jump around. For example, I tried to visit the website for a local library and when it asked me to enter in my library card #, instead of "1234..." it would go "1243...". The insertion of characters as I typed them magically skipped around in the field. This was not isolated to just that website. Happened on a registration form on Adobe's site as well. Very annoying.
Looking forward to future updates.

I personally think Miren browser is the best for the nook. I have it set so that that status bar/tabs stays around all the time, and the floating buttons always hide. The only issue is that it doesn't work well with image links when they are opened in a new tab. In the new tab it will instead go to the link of the picture, not the actual link to the website. I will try this though, I tried the beta a long time ago so it will be nice to see how far they have come.

I have noticed this too. The only (painful) solution I have found is to very slowly type with a pause in-between each letter. Thank goodness it can sync with my desktop Firefox and slurp up all my passwords to avoid this mostly.
OMG SERIOUSLY? I tried Firefox last night for about 20 minutes and it GROUND TO A HALT each time I tried to search or put input in the URL bar. It'd freeze, if I tried to do anything I'd get the FC/Wait dialog, I hit Wait several times.. Finally killed it, tried again... Same thing. Eventually it'd load the page.
If you all think it's great, I wonder wtf is going on with my install. Maybe I need to uninstall it, make sure any old sdcard stuff is cleaned (I had it installed a few betas ago) and try again. Totally unusable for me right now.
I'm hoping the FF Deskop Ad Block Pro extension works with the FF mobile soon. That can make the internet a much more bearable place.
Works for me. But can't t flash to work. Works in dolphin and stock

[Q] Stock Browser Help!

Hey guys I seem to have lost my Gingerbread stock browser. I was playing with widgets and I wanted to make some space and "removed" my browser from the home panels..not the application panel. Now when I went into applications I cannot seem to find my stock browser!! How do I get it back?! Please help this is very annoying...
Also I don't want to use any other browser..I tried dolphin, and various others..I am not happy with them. Stock seemed to be the smoothest, fastest, and appealing browser to me.
You can't delete the stock browser. Did you check and recheck all the icons in your app drawer? It could be there, I know myself looking over an app for like 10 times, then discover I have it installed when going through the market.
Try a reboot or something, I hope it'll help.

I did a reboot. I'm not sure what you mean by app drawer? Is that the same as the "application" menu with all the apps installed? I'm new to android I just got the Galaxy S2 two days ago, so bare with me. I did the google search in my phone also to help me find it, and it cannot locate it. In fact you need the browser for it so when it asked me to view a web page it asked to use "dolphin" or "skyfire" not my "Internet" browser.
You can't delete Stock browser. You may have deleted the Widget but no way one can remove the system browser. Even I doubt it if it's possible to delete by TB, so it must there in Menu.
Regards.
Yes the App Drawer is the official name for the menu with all the icons. It's very weird you could remove the stock browser. And that you can't select it anymore.
Does your phone give any errors when using the dialer (the app you use to call someone)? Since the SGS2's Dialer.apk relies on the Browser.apk (filename for an android app), weirdly enough.
You cannot remove an app when using the home menu. At least not using the stock TouchWiz interface.
If you have no errors or problems, it HAS to be there.
This happend to me to on my galaxy tab. I think I did it with titanium back up. I don't know how you did it but you can reflash stock software with odin and get it back. You might lose your data.
It's working now. I spent a few hours trying to figure out what happen to the browser! I gave up. Funny thing is before this issue I flashed my ROM to Litening 3.2 I didn't like the bugs on it..especially the very heavy laggy internet bug! So I got a new browser didn't like it. While I was moving my widgets around I usually "remove" them and go back to my app draw to place them again where I want. I went to my app draw...no internet browser. After unable to figure it out..I reflashed my ROM back to the previous litening ROM 3.0. Then what do you know the browser came back! It has nothing to do with litening ROM, but I'm guessing it has a browser.apk in it so it installed it for me again.

[Q] incredibly minimal ROM?

is there a ROM that is completed gutted of everything except the absolute essentials needed for the phone to work?

No ROM I know of lacks a browser. CM7 won't have Gtalk, market, any HTC anything... stuff like live wallpapers and the like you can find with root explorer and delete.
Omgb is the leanest ROM.
CM7, stripped everything for me, OMFGB is good too
sent from a 1.5ghz-Cyanogen 'Bolt
[ROM]Cyanogenmod 7 RC1.4
[Kernel] Drod BFS AOSP. 9
CM7 is the most stripped down rom I have used.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
You cant really strip the browser from the rom. Well, you can remove the apk, but android has a lot of the webkit framework tied into it for other applications, so the browser apk is just a small portion of the entire webkit framework that many things depend on (things such as the xda app, netflix, etc).
Anyways, the default browser on non sense roms is more usable anyways, though it's still my secondary browser most of the time, but it doesnt lag like the sense one does.
I really CAN strip the browser from the rom....Been doing it for months, never broke a thing.
I prefer to use Th3oryRom's base, then go in with titanium and delete system apps (browser, sms, email, live wallpapers, widgets, other stuff). CM7 and OMFGB work well as a clean-ish base too, but I get much better performance out of Th3ory's stuff. clear cache/dalvik, and you're good to go.

never said you couldnt remove the browser apk. I just said you cant remove the webkit libraries, which are technically larger than the apk is.
i guess i should have stated that i prefer to stay away from AOSP ROM's(just personal preference)... i've tried both CM7 & LiquidThunderbread before, but i suppose i'll give OMGB a try.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1201600 is a stripped to hell GB CM7 rom, it's like 81MB. Build to suit. But that's AOSP. Th3ory has a Sense based rom too, but until it gets it's own thread it's buried somewhere in the last few pages of http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186218&page=136

[Q] GB search app on ICS?

Is it possible to have the gingerbread search function/app on ICS? Google now is nice but is not as quick or responsive as I would like. Also the "fake" browser that search results are displayed into loads really slowly. I really utilized the quick Google search in gingerbread and would love to have it back if possible. Any chance?
I can safely assume this is not possible? Does anyone have an apk for Google search on gingerbread? If so, I would love to try it and see if it works.
I was hoping you were going to get an answer, since I am not 100% confident in what I did. But it mostly works.
I downloaded the search apk from here:
http://www.filecrop.com/google-search-ics-apk.html.
renamed it Google_Search.apk, put it in /system/app, changed permissions. and to get rid of Google Now, I changed velvet.apk to velvet.apk.old. reboot.
This might be the ics Google search instead of Gingerbread (it is different than the one I had under GB, but that was Sense based), but it is not Google Now.
Thanks Bob! How responsive is it? And search results open right to the browser?
Also, which apk did you download?

I downloaded the first actual file from the page I linked ..... GoogleSearch-#### Trans etc .apk. The appearance is modified from stock, but functionally it seems the same. It is fairly responsive, night and day from Google Now. And yes, the search results open in the browser.
I know you mentioned GB, I just wanted to get rid of Google Now so was looking for ICS. You might be able to pull the GB search apk out of one of the packages here: http://wiki.rootzwiki.com/Google_Apps#Universal_Packages_4
Good luck.

Chrome and Now apks?

Once upon a time, I had a working version of chrome on this tablet, but for some reason, the apk got deleted out of my precious downloads folder where I keep my apks and I ain't got it no mo'.
Does anyone have a link to this or able to pull it from their device with AirDroid or Titanium backup?
And while we are on the topic of running these types of apps, was there ever a run-able Google Now for older devices? I have never seen one. Thanks guys.
did u really manage to run chrome on this?
i never managed to do it. i know nowadays chrome is for android 4. and above only, but in case you make it work - i would like to know how.
sorry i can't help you. i can only wish that someday soon, we'll have a normal android version.
Attached is the "working" chrome. I don't know how it compares to the current version. I'm sure it has bugs and all,but it seems to run, for me. The accomanying widget is disappointing.
I will use it some and see how it does. overall though, i am pleased with the stock browser. shoot me if you like
thanks, i'll give it a shot.
so far every browser i tried was nice at the beginning and after a few days/weeks of use got sluggish. its this damn 3.1 version..
It force closes every time I go into some menu and back out of it is all.
I would just like the stock honeycomb browser with tabs at the top, without this ATT skinning, anyone know how to make that happen?
TIA

You may remove the ATT Skinning, however you have to firstly ROOT the Jetstream, then you will be able to set your own Homepage.
As an alternative to Chrome, you may wish to install FireFox
