Recovery - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I'm still finding my way around the SGS2, having come from the Hero, which was fully cracked open and well developed.
I notice that the recovery console has an option to flash an update.zip, is this going to be an option for flashing roms? or have we to wait for Chainfire / Koush to support our phone first?
Edit: Sorry I thought I was in Q&A when posting this, please feel free to move it

It's 3e recovery, so it does sig checks before flashing... That means we just need to compile up a custom recovery binary and put it in the place of the 3e one in initramfs.

Need to get and flash earlier Clockworkmod. Any ideas?

Hey all.
I need to find an early version (< v3.x) of Clockworkmod and install it. Anyone know where I can find it?
I'm trying to update my radio as I've 3G most of the time, (I think after installing Root Call Blocker Pro), and I can't update my radio because I've updated CWM to 5.0.2.0 and now I can't flash Amend scripted .zips. It will only flash Edify scripted .zips. I've used amend2edify script with no success and have given up trying to convert the script. I just want to flash an early CWM so I can flash the Amend scripted radio.
So, does anyone know where I can find one??? I kinda really need 3G!!!
Well, your English seems pretty flawless from what you've written. Have you read the forum rules about posting questions in the Q & A section?
Unfortunately, my idea is illegal and would bring me into jail. You're on your own, kid.
Use rom manager ;-) there you have the option to flash older recoveries.

Last option (bottom) in ROM Manager is to flash old recoveries. Press that one then select the recovery you need (say 2.x). Flash your radio then update again CWM from ROM Manager to the latest version. I just did that for the same reason (flashing another radio) and it worked. Some CWM are giving me errors though when selected for download but you can try one that works. For the purpose of flashing a new radio any 2.x version should be good enough.
Here is how i did it
I hat the same problem when i tried to flash an rom.
copy the atached in youre sd card. Power the phone with volume down key, enter in recovery (if it shows an exclamation sign press volume up + power). am menu should open, select apply update from card am you shoul have now clockwork mode 2...
I actually looked at the ROM Manager but was looking in the wrong area! I thought it was in the CWM section but it kept on wanted to update. My bad. I have now dropped to 2.x and updated my radio and Cyanogen. I was getting a headache looking around for converting scripts!
Thanks all!

[Q] Verizon Fascinate can't install Rom Manager - Phone is rooted

Hi, I just got a hand me down samsung fascinate to replace my barely functioning OG Droid. I rooted it and installed rom manager and it kept failing the custom rom installation or any installation of anything from recovery manager. It kept saying the signature verification failed if I remember the error code correctly. That was with the 3e recovery software. I read a few posts that said the older 2e version would work better with rom manager.
So I used odin and reverted to an older software revision, 2.1-update1. That successfully shows 2e as the recovery manager version. But now the market doesn't show rom manager(free) as an install option, premium shows up though. If I use the web browser to look at the market and look for it it shows up but it shows four devices, my old droid, a nook I rooted and converted for a friend, and then two devices that just show a question mark and doesn't allow them to be selected for installation. I thought thats ok I'll just download it from clockwork mods website and install it manually. I downloaded it but astro opens it and shows no info, details tab says it cannot open RomManager.apk as APK file. If I open it with file manager it says it cannot parse package. I tried downloading it on my computer and transferring it to my phone and it still says the same thing.
So I'm really confused as to what is going on. I do have install non market stuff checked.
I was hoping someone could give me some advice. I want to install miui as that was what I ran on my droid and liked it. Want to see how it runs on a faster phone.
Thanks in advance hopefully I provided enough information and didn't miss something simple.
When you were on Froyo, did you install the modified 3e Recovery needed for CWM to stick? I'm sure this is your problem if you didnt take this step.
Here is a link to the thread with everything you will need. If you have additional problems, dont hesitate to ask!
Hope this helps!
BTW: 1. Dont worry about this being for the infuse. It will work fine & 2. These types of threads should go in the Q&A section, for future reference
Rom manager is pointless unless you run cm7 nightlies. Get the recovery fixed for cm7 (first post of jt's cm7 thread in development) put miui rom on sd. Pull batt, flash fixed cm7 recovery in odin, insert battery (don't boot), 3 finger to recovery and flash miui. Profit.
good day.
First thank you for the replies very appreciated.
Tone_Capone I was going to try your method first. You are correct when I was on the updated firmware I did not flash the "fixed" 3e recovery did not realize there was one. My question now is I'm currently at 2e recovery, on the older firmware. Can I still follow those directions and put the modified 3e recovery onto the phone how it is. Or does the modified file count on other files being in place that I don't have since I'm downgraded? Do I need to update it again? I hate to ask but I just want to make sure.
chopper the dog Sorry about wrong section, thought q and a would be for commonly asked questions and the answers for them. I was gonna try this method then but I'm not sure if I choose bootloader in odin or pda like I did when downgrading the firmware.

[Q] Clarification about unlocking and rooting

Hey Everyone,
So, I'm pretty sure I'm going to unlock the bootloader on my Prime, but I had a quick question before I do, and I'm not seeing any sort of threads which help me out that much (Or at least the ones I looked at).
To make the story short, I'm looking to be able to root my tablet and install a custom ROM on there, however, it is to my understanding that there is no way to root the .21 firmware at this time. However, I was wondering if by unlocking the bootloader I would be able to manually push CWM Touch and thusly be able to boot into recovery, installing a rom that is pre-rooted, or even just rolling back to a previous update. I'm fairly familiar with ADB and terminal commands, so I am not shy to get into the nitty gritty if need be.
I apologize in advance if this has already been answered or asked, but, I'm in a time crunch and was looking for some advice !
Thanks for the information,

um...sorry....it might come across as harsh but you didnt look did you? If your familiar with ADB then you should know that rooting has nothing to do with custom roms. In order to put a custom rom you have to have an unlocked bootloader.
Review the Android development Section for info on roms/bootloaders/rooting
An unlocked bootloader was released and we had a rom available within 2 hours.
If you go to ANY thread with [ROM] they will tell you what you need to do. Easy.
And .21 is cooked into many Roms so far...i'm using virtous Prime and prefer that one so far...(it's really about preference)
So...moral of the story..please read before posting...do a quick search...it's been answered before.

Well, I know that rooting has nothing to do with Rom installment. Admittedly I was posting from a golf course and didn't take the time to sift through the threads. So, thanks for answering my question, kinda. When I said Root & Install a custom Rom I did not mean that in sequential order. Simply that I would like a Rom that has root baked into it, or be root-able.
Unlock your device via Asus's unlock tool app.
Download and install Rom Manager from Market.
Install CWM via Rom Manager.
Download the rom you want to flash and transfer it to your tablet.
Reboot into CWM and make your first nandroid backup.
Wipe Cache/Factory reset.
Wipe Dalvik Cache
Flash the rom and reboot.

[Q] Replace Clockwork Recovery with TWRP on TF201

Hi!
I've been using Androwook 2.0 for a while and love it. However, I'd like to try 2.1 and the BAKED ROMs. Based on feedback on the forum, I want to use the Team Win recovery (TWRP) as opposed to my currently installed Clockwork Recovery.
Problem is, I can't work out how to replace CWR with TWRP. I've downloaded GooManager and instructed it to install the TW recovery. It says it's done so but when I reboot to recovery it takes me back to CW.
So, question is: how can I replace Clockwork Recovery with TWRP on a TF201?
Many thanks in advance for your thoughts!

mroshaw

you could use fastboot method: http://www.teamw.in/project/twrp2/93
also it is recommended to use AndroidRoot bootloader: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1774352
Thank you for the reply. I'm not that comfortable with that level of tweaking and I had really hoped that Goo Manager would sort me out. Is it a known issue that Goo Manager cannot install TWRP if another recovery is present?
If so, I'll give the fastboot method a go at the weekend.
You really shouldn't be flashing anything if you don't know what its actually doing on your device.

I think most of us are unaware of exactly what is going on behind the scenes when you tell an app to update the recovery. The fact that he is searching for alternative methods to GooManager since it doesn't work seems rather valid. I flashed twrp via the fastboot method. I did not use the AndroidRoot bootloader.

Yeah, not a particularly helpful response to be honest. If you don't know the answer to the question, probably best not to post a reply.

Indeedy - thanks for that.
The Androwook flashing process felt really safe and gave a lot of less techy Prime users access to a ROM that transformed (excuse the pun) the TF201 into a usable device. I don't think a lack of a full understanding of the inner workings of the technology or process should stop people from using it or from asking questions. Otherwise, what's the point of the forum?
If anyone is able to answer the question as to why Goo Manager will not install TWRP on top of an existing CW recovery, I'd greatly appreciate it. :good:

I had problem with GooManager too, so I flashed TWRP manually via fastboot.
Be aware her if you want to use twrp backup/restore you'll probably need modified bootloader as stated above. Twrp uses .img backup format, not blob, and modified bootloader can handle them correctly, which is not the case of original one.
You could have a non functional restore process for /boot. One solution could be to reflash the ROM after the restore in that case, so if you don't want to modify the bootloader always keep the zip of the ROM that you backup.
Thanks all.
I'll go the manual route then, I think. Be as well to go the whole hog and do the modified boot loader too, by the sounds of things.
Thank you for your useful responses and input - much appreciated.
Couple of things to be aware of, firstly, fastboot method for installing twrp not too hard, read the instructions a couple times before you proceed. If you do run into problems, go back to the forum and ask, don't try to "fix" it with a method that hasn't been proven. Secondly, when you install twrp, you can forget you cwm backups, they are now worthless. That being said, make a back up in twrp at your earliest convinence.
Third, read the instructions, most are pretty clear but if you don't understand something ask before you start you can save yourself a lot of trouble.

Only thing is I have a problem with the USB Storage. When the phone is connected to the computer running Windows 8 32-bit version, I do get the option to transfer files using USB to PC but the disc drive does not show up in My Computer. Changed many settings but cannot transfer files to SD Card..I have tried all possible solutions in many forums especially XDA-Forums and Google.Com but nothing worked. The only way I was able to transfer files is by using the Mini USB to USB flash drive cable. See the image attatched. Please let me know if anyone is facing this issue and tried any solution that worked.. Thank you..

The real issue is that there is no working CWM for our devices. Therefore, the CWM files that are being created don't successfuly install CWM onto our devices. I have tried a few different CWM files that were created. I tried both the touch and non-touch versions of CWM for both the LTE (GT-i9205) and non-LTE(GT-i9200) versions of the Mega all with no success. Some of the CWM files cause you to have no recovery at all and you have to flash back the stock recovery. Then, some of the CWM files appears to have been installed successfully but, when you actually boot into recovery mode, the stock recovery is still there and not the CWM that you just "installed" (which is strange but this has happened to me more often than not).
That's probably what's happening here. Pariki probably got through the physical process of opening ODIN, selecting the CWM recovery file, starting the process, and letting it complete. Then, afterwards, probably booted into recovery thinking they are looking at CWM when in fact what they are seeing is the stock recovery because the CWM file didn't actually install onto their device. This would explain why they don't have a backup option. I don't know what the solution is beside the fact that we simply need a working CWM or TWRP. Currently, no one has been able to create one.

Exactly.....Curgervending..
I have the same thoughts on this.
I can backup the normal Contacts and Messages but backing up the whole working ROM is what I want. It is only possible with a working CWM that has the Backup/Restore option. Need to wait till someone works on it.
If someone has a working CWM that has the Backup/Restore option, Please let me know with link. I will flash it.
Thank you.

You know the real pain is taking the phone to the Service Center. I am sure you faced this when there is nothing you can do and when there is no help from others after screwing it..
I was very descriptive with the way I restored my phone to make it working and without having to take it to the service center.
I am sure you don't know but this will help others on how to recover the phone, what to flash and what not to..If it is for their phone or not. They get ideas on recovering the phone..Hoped I helped others with my Post...
Whatever, dude. You assume too much. Just stop spamming here and posting the same message 4 times.
