Phone getting hot and Horrible battery after Gingerbread - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

On gingerbread It was fine, good battery, no heat.
After reverting back i get HORRIBLE battery like. Like loss of 10% in 10 minutes all the time (Not just 90%)
The phone also gets really warm in my pocket when it appears to be doing nothing.
Any ideas whats causing this?

A rogue app look for a battery monitor and let it watch for like 2 hours and then read what it says
Is causing the problem and uninstall it

Reports nothing abnormal. Still happing though.

Did you try pulling your battery for a minute and putting it back in? I've had this issue as well on stock still have yet to figure out what causes it but the only way I've been able to stop it is by pulling battery and issue goes away...not to say it won't happen again...I'm currently monitoring my phone with system panel and current widget to see if I can find what is causing it if and when it happens again. Which i suspect it will as its happened at least three times now in the past week.

I will try now, The past few days iv barely used my phone so id let it sit and ran System panel and I get like at max .4% usage from the System Process and everything else (about 5 other processes) uses like .1%.
I upgraded bamf today to 1.7 and ill try the battery pull. I hope this fixes it.

Battery drains faster than usual

I have noticed my battery sucks lately. I know the battery isn't the greatest but I was able to get easily a day of use out if it. Now I can barely go a day. I purchased beautiful Widgets, battery indicator and xda app all last week And it seems after that is when my battery went to **** .I used launcher pro for a bit too but started having lag problems so I removed that. Today I uninstalled beautiful Widgets. I'm on wifi and in airplane mode. As I'm typing this I've lost %2 already. Wtf is going on? I have GPS Bluetooth and usually wifi off. I have use only 2G networks, sync only gmail and screen manually set and set to low 30sec TO.
Any suggestions?

Sounds like way more than that. I can certainly type a couple paragraphs before my % drops at all. You sure haven't installed something else? If not you could have a defect.? Possibly return it and get a new one?

Quick question, which ROM are you running? Ever since I switched over to leaked JI2, every couple days I notice that after running one of a few apps, the CPU just seems to go into overdrive. The phone gets really warm and the battery drains ridiculously fast. So fast that even plugging into my car charger won't charge the phone, even on idle. If I reboot, the phone cools down and the battery drain goes back to its normal, slow self.
I haven't narrowed it down to any specific app yet, but it seems to be either, Foursquare, Great Land Grab, or Bubble Blast.
Foursquare I have, I don't remember when I installed it. I am actually just running stock TW.

I get 15hrs... I am not ROOTED! I did the drain battery life process twice. This is with moderate usage. I am planning to do the drain battery process once a month cuz I hear it helps with battery life. Possible that u install something that's killing your battery.
Solution do the master reset if that doesn't help then it can be the battery is no good. I know that this is with the stock rom. If u are using another rom that's maybe the problem. U can try switchig roms to see if this is the problem. I hope this information has been helpful.
Does the master reset remove everything ? I have all my pics/videos on my phone meM. I have music and avatar on SD.

It seems as though it drains faster in standby with nothing running. I removed FourSquare last night and have nothing running as far as widgets. I'm going to reboot and see. I've had it unplugged since 7am this morning, after a little over an hour I lost 2%.. not that bad I guess..

I've had this happen a few times. For me, it's usually because my battery status gets thrown off somehow. The phone would read that I have 55% battery life left, but it really only is at 25 or 30% and it always feels like it's draining fast. I usually turn off the phone, pull the battery out for a few seconds and then put it back it. When I turn on the phone the battery percentage is corrected and the phones seems to be back to normal battery use. I don't know why this happens.

This was suddenly happening to me today -- my battery started draining very quickly, mostly on standby (I usually have quite good battery life). No new or unusual apps installed in the past week (I don't use Foursquare).
I gave it a power-down/battery pull; no adjustment in the % as described in the post above, but it seems to be draining more normally now. Weird....

Same thing happens to me every couple days. Rebooting the phone fixes it every single time though, so it's not a big deal if I catch it in time. If I didn't catch it, I'd estimate my phone would be drained (even in standby) within 4 hours or so.

Same here, I rebooted after removing FS and some other apps/touitur and got 1day 13hrs on the next charge with pretty moderate use. So whatever it was, it's gone now. If it was FS hopefully it's fixed soon.
Had a similar experience, with battery % entering freefall every time I turned the phone on. Two things helped:
1. I did the drain cycle. Drain the battery completely till it shuts off and charge it to full while off. This does not 'fromat/form' the battery in any way it just helps the phone to calibrate the meter.
2. I uninstalled few apps that I suspected were draining the battery.
I advise you install JuicePlotter and see the graph of battery drain. You'll be able to tell if the phone is entering standby or not. Thanks to some culprit apps (still figuring out what it was exactly) my phone was not entering standby at all hence the crap battery life.

Razr has Androids 'suspend' bug that kills battery life

I've been doing a lot of research on this and it appears that our Razr has a bug that has been plaguing alot of Android phone. The 'suspend' bug. I noticed my phone was using alot of battery just sitting overnight. Sometime I'd wake up and it would be dead, which didn't make any sense. So I dl'd Watchdog to see what was killing the batt and it would get a warning about a 'suspend' process. This would pop up several times when the phone was just idle and not being used, with screen off. So I Googled it and there are alot of folks on various Android phones experiencing this problem. Here is a link to one site that is working on it or has been: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=11126
If you do a search on it, there are quite a few places that it's popping up on. I can't figure out how to get it fixed but I do know that this is one reason our phones are not lasting as long as they could. They're being drained when not being used! Now this may affect alot of folks or just some but it's a definate problem, I know on my phone it sure is!
I've also noticed there's a huge drain in battery use coming android is. Hope there's a fix for this.

It's not a program but a process of the Android OS. It's likely part of the rom for the razr like a setting that motorola stuck in that prevents the low-power cycle that should happen when you put in sleep mode. Probably could be fixed once people start making roms or if they roll out that OTA for icecream sandwich.
Same here, hope this gets fixed soon .
And as I have pointed out in other threads, having Wifi connected magnifies this problem quite a lot (for my phone at least). If I use CPU Spy to monitor sleep time, if Wifi is connected, I get almost zero sleep time even if the screen is always off.
What I've found for battery drain with screen off:
Wifi on, cell data off (using smart actions): 4%/hour
Wifi off, only 3g data on: 1-2%/hour
4g falls in between somewhere.
It would be great if Juice Defender could be programmed to deal with this Suspend Process.
Which watchdog did you install? the free version. I would like to confirm this and I suggest others do as well.
Yea just using the free version of Watchdog. Make sure you enable the search Android processes also.
BetterBatteryStats shows it as well under "Process"
I'm also having this issue. I was getting really good battery life (compared to my work phone, an Evo) for the first few weeks and then all a sudden the battery bombed on me. The standard Android battery use info only showed "Android OS" as the culprit (and would show like 60-80% as of late) of battery going to it. I downloaded Watchdog Lite and then this morning after I had the phone off the charger it was giving me the alert that the suspend process exceeded threshold of 51%.
I DO use wifi and that was actually helping with battery, but I have it set to not use when screen is off. Now, that being said if suspend is hanging on it trying to disable that's one thing, but I've got those settings in juice defender and in the OS config.
I have the exact same issue
I don't know what it is, haven't checked but...I lost 13% overnight in about 8 hours, too much IMO. Still get awesome battery life though, can't imagine if that was gone.

I have the Razr for about 2 weeks now, and I have yet to get an issue.. However, maybe for the handsets affected, a patch will come out to resolve the issue. Or maybe, just maybe they will just wait and release it complete with ICS for the Razr.

Well, I think I figured out what was causing the issue in my case. Anyone else running the app "Screebl"?

Yep, use it my Razr.
Anyone experience something (a term I will borrow from the Nook forums, ) "Sleep of Death"? It has happened three times to me on my Razr in two days, although in the last two it hasn't happened.
By SOD I mean that I unplugged the phone from the charger fully charged and within a matter of 25min to 6hours the phone becomes unresponsive . No power button working, plugging into charger, nothing wakes it. The only time it responds is after the hard reboot ( by holding down power and volume - for 10s)

Well, after disabling Screebl I haven't had anymore wacklock issues. Watch Dog isn't reporting on suspend anymore, and betterbatterystats is now behaving as well.
I also have Android OS taking up to like 46% of my battery. However, I now got around 20 hours battery life with a few txt, calls, music gaming etc since I turned the policy of the Wifi to go off when screen is turned off. Weirdly, it also appears to improve my battery life even when my WiFi is already turned off. Guess you guys can give it a try. But Android OS is the main energy user of my battery. Didn't have that on my Xperia X10
I have two questions:
1. Does anyone know the correlation between CPU usage and battery burn? I'm seeing Suspend consistently burning 3-5% of CPU, but haven't seen how that directly translates into batteyr burn. There should be some sort of mathematical relation between X CPU = Y battery burn.
2. Even though suspend is eating low cpu cycles, the battery dropping 10-15% overnight with nothing going on is still ridiculous. Any ideas on what else the probelm is?

Error v1.0.0

Anyone ever get an app in Titanium Backup named Error version 1.0.0? I've since frozen it, just trying to see if anyone knows what this is? It runs within the Android System according to battery stats.
I was wondering the same thing the other night. Any ill effects since you froze it?
I suspect it's an app for error reporting. Like when an app FC's and gives you an option to report the error to Google. Might be Samsung specific for their apps.
This is 100% speculation though with no evidence to back it up. Take my explanation with a grain of salt.
I left it on.

I'm at 93% after 3 hours, and I haven't even had it on for than a minute or two.

I have a similar problem. My phone randomly turns off/restarts. Afterwards, my battery icon turns gray for a few minutes. When it comes back, it drops by ~10-20%.
This actually happened to me before several months back. Last time, I called HTC and they gave me a new battery. That worked for a couple of months, but now it's back. I'm currently working with HTC tech support to get it figured out.

I was, but I recently installed Energy rom. The problem is still there. I'm running my phone in safe mode now and seeing if my phone restarts.
Quite a few people have problems with stock batteries. I encounter the same problems regardless what ROM I'm running. I bought a couple Anker 1900 mAh batteries and will report back.
You need a new battery, but you can try draining the battery all the way down to the point that the device can't even come on, then it charge it over night all the way back up. See if that helps, it tends to help with this battery issue.
Ido I have the same prob but I was thinking how about resetting battery stats in recovery
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using xda premium
I am so relived to hear that I'm not the only one with this problem. Let me tell you guys my experience with up to 3 batteries, various roms, and weeks of googling...
So basically, changing battery do fix the problem; but only temporarily. It can fix the problem for about a couple weeks or months, but the problem will come back anyway. I am on my third battery now and switching between the batteries; so, I am pretty sure that it is only a temporary fix. Cycling between the three battery sometimes is pretty helpful (but again, it is just a temporary fix).
Another way to fix it temporarily that works pretty well for me is to take out the battery, wait for about 5 seconds, and turn on the phone again. It only fix the problem for about a couple days though; so, might as well switch battery if you got another battery.
Another possibility to fix it without playing with the battery, you can try factory reset or install another custom rom. It sometimes helps also, but a pain if you are not the type that likes to try different roms.
Lastly, the better and simpler fix is to reboot to recovery, wipe all caches and dalvik, fix permissions, and reboot again. This can fix the problem (but only temporary).
Out of those four tries, I find that swapping battery or full wipe / install
Custom rom tends to fix the problem for a longer time. I haven't been able to find any permanent fox for the random shutdown yet. But, I hope those information helps for anyone who have the same problem

The draining battery does work. Just turn EVERYTHING on to drain it (brightness, GPS, bluetooth etc.) and watch some videos to drain it down all the way. After this do a mini power cycle (pull battery wait awhile, put it back, then leave it charging for at least 10 hours).
This solved the problem for me

Exactly, worked for me and quite a few others, I've tested it myself when I had bought my second device used, it came with this very issue, I killed what was left of it and let it charge over night, it's been remarkable ever since, but different folks different strokes, the next best thing to do is to change the battery since that solved it for others. And for the record, the oem battery is the best to replace it with since some anker batteries have only made it worse for some.
getting my newly acquired Amaze device in a couple of days and will see if i run into this issue... god hope not lol... if battery issue does occur - will follow thru the full batt drain solution (mentioned above).

I have my stock battery and 2 Ankers. The phone will randomly die with any of the batteries. The battery drain trick seems to work okay, but it certainly isn't a "fix" IMO.
I drained my stock battery last weekend and charged it to 100% on the Anker charger. Worked great down to 10% on Sunday. Charged the phone to 100% on the nightstand, while I slept Sunday night. Phone randomly shutoff at ~25% at work on Monday. Had similar results with the two Anker batteries too.

[Q] total battery drain overnight

I charge my phone to 100% nightly and in the morning wake up to around 94% battery left which is great. Last night however, I charged it to 100% but for whatever reason woke in the middle of the night and opened my phone to check the time (I have a QuickCircle cover) and it was dead. The battery was at 0%. When I went to sleep there was nothing running on the phone and the screen was off....how can I find out what caused this?
thanks,
dk2463
I noticed something last night which got me a little paranoid, I killed all running apps and was in my home screen and even tho I didn't have anything running my data icon was spinning like crazy as if something was being downloaded or synced. I tried restarting my phone but nothing, I then tried killing most running processes but again nothing seemed to stop it.... I ended up taking out my battery and left my phone like that all night. I came here today to ask and talk about it and see if anyone else had this weird thing happen to them. I'm commenting on your post because I'm sure that if I would have left my phone on, the battery would have drained pretty quickly. So let me know if you notice some weird data activity going on on your device. Then again it could be just a coincidence.

I'm commenting on your post because I'm sure that if I would have left my phone on, the battery would have drained pretty quickly. hmmm, maybe something similar happened on mine and I didn't catch it. I noticed today that my contact pics I assigned to people are all wrong and they weren't yesterday. Seems like the phone had a major meltdown.....
Not sure if you can find out what caused exactly that, but you could try installing better battery stats & if it happens again, plus you can see what's using what.

Same thing here. I noticed my battery draining unusually fast.
Culprit: Connections Optimizer. Disable that thing.

I've learned ever since Sprint created that program that it causes more problems than it solves and have always left it off since my Galaxy S3.
My issue was Location Services. I did a test a few nights ago where I left my phone off the charger while I was sleeping. Went to bed at 100%, woke up to 100%. I used Greenify on some system apps including Location Services
Here's everything I greenified as well
I always disable connections optimizer. I think 6% is a little high for overnight loss. The g2 and g3 are 2 of the best phones as far a battery life at idle. My phone almost never drops a percent within the first 5 or so hours after charging unless I'm using it.
