[Q] Recovery console - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Coming from the Hero, I became quite familiar with both AmonRa and Clockwork Recovery.
I noticed that the built in recovery has an option to flash an update.zip. Are we going to be able to install any roms from there rather than using Odin?
Or do we have to wait for someone like Chainfire or Koush to develop for our SGS2?

I'm waiting myself mate. I'm viewing and hoping there is gona be a recovery released soon. I wont risk a brick

If anything it's probably safer flashing using Odin (As it's a Samsung tool) rather than a custom recovery. However I'm looking forward to some Amon_ra/CWM love too

I had CWM running last night on SGS2 thanks to Birdman...
Not functional, but had the (hideous IMO) CWM running on my phone... Will need to sort a proper recovery for it once I get it working

ODIN is better for my money than CWM tbh... I'll see if we can work out what's wrong with it

Odin looks like a nice little tool from what I've seen. Havent got a device i can actually use it with yet but i like what ive seen so far.
Its just nice to have an option to restore / backup when your not near a PC for whatever reason.
Not sure why cwm seems to be held in such high regard over other methods but either way you wont hear me complaining.

K, I rebuilt CWM. Modified the device tree, and fixed the mounts. All I need you guys to do is test it.
Great work all. Have an 8 hour charity motorcycle ride today (33 degrees right now) - would be great to come back and see a "warm recovery" - lol.
It's going in a good direction I see

Is this just going to be flashable from the stock "unlocked" bootloader? or with the same HTC unlocked bootloader, can we fastboot flash it?
I think flashing from unlocked htc bootloader should't be a problem

QFT. Looking good guys.
im so excited.. im gettin annoyed of the stock rom lol
Stock ROM could be annoying , but xBoarder said he'll start working on AOSP / ICS / MIUI once he get's his phone by the mean time . Sit back relax & once we get recovery there will be 3 ROMS to choose from .
1) BeastROM
2) TO Tweaked | OUT
2#2) TO Tweaked | OUT themed
3) Gingercream
If there's a test IMG of the recovery, lmk, just got my amaze a few hours ago, I'd be happy to test it.

S-off or S-on "unlocked" users, although currently it isn't function complete, so it would NOT be recommended to use.

and it will work for htc unlocked phones
demo released
coould i ask some users a favor? could you guys do a pull of the /system if your rooted doesnt even need to be full root temp root is fine

[Q] Differences between AmonRa and CWM?

Thread title explains it. I've only ever used CWM and I'm not familiar with AmonRa. What's different about it, and does it work more or less the same as CWM?
Thanks!
Super
I think its pretty much the same from my exp...i rly wish my data would stop droppin so i can reply lol
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using XDA App
They are pretty much the same. Amonra has a couple cool features. For example, it can root a stock rom from recovery
Didn't know about it being able to root a stock Rom. Thank you sir

Me either lol nvr heard of it
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using XDA App
I didn't know either until I was looking through it. It worked great and took 5 seconds. It is in the development section of recovery under mounts and stuff
Cool. Thanks for the info.
So are Rom images formatted for one or the other, or can you use them interchangeably? I'm sure we'll end up seeing CWM soon so I'm curious.
Thanks!
Super

ClockworkMod Touch awesomeness

This is great just bought my ClockworkMod Touch and I have hboot 1.5 and it's working great of course I still have flash image gui just in case. Anybody pick this up? Tell me what you think?

And installed touch version a few hours ago. Works great. TWRP was very nice, but I've always been a Clockworkmod guy. Nice to be back...and with touch controls to boot. Excellent recovery.
I'm down with adb but I'm also lazy.
I bought it through RM and I'm glad to have clockwork on my EVO.
Koush provides some good ass customer service too.
Give up your money.

I went back to twrp2.0...after cwm got my two bucks, which I don't mind donating to a fantastic dev.

I bought it yesterday and installed it but there is problems such it it will not mount usb when trying to fix permissions it lock the phone up and give an error that it could not access a folder they did update it from 5.0.8.01 5.0.8.02 but It still has bugs I am going back to twrp 2.0 until they get all the bugs fixed it is a nice recovery that take full advantage of the 3vo screen which to me make everything easier to read

This will be really nice, but since I obtained Root through Amon Ra, switching to CWM maybe a headache. Think I'll wait until ICS update before I change anything on my phone. Still glad to know my paid Rom Manager app will be of some use soon.

Hmm , just refreshed twitter and didn't see a new announcement other than the one 13 hours ago saying he picked up a rezound ?..but that sounds great if he is already done .
I am hoping this will also lead to a CM port from him
Ill keep amon ra thanks. Had the evo 4G for 6 months with amon ra. Clockwork just feels cumbersome.

I don't see anything on his twitter, either. But, I do show Recovery and Touch Recovery options available on his website. I'm assuming this means that support is now official. =)

Edit: I was looking at his personal twitter and not the @clockworkmod feed. Stupid me.. I didn't notice the link in the OP. lol

Use amonra or twrp. They are either equal in capability or better.

Idk what happened. We got two builds real quick that had issues. Then nothing.
I'd wait until the charging issue gets addressed, not sure if it has yet with CWM. Its always nice to have more options though.

I use cwm touch, and found out today that yes it still has charging issues. When I used amon ra I thought I had problems with it, but looking back I don't think that was the issue.
CWM is going the way of WebOS. Yes, that makes me happy. There are far superior alternate recoveries out there. CWM has lived its life in the spotlight but the likes of TWRP and others are slamming CWM to the ground release after release, update after update. Just throwing this out there.

hrm.
I use recovery to factory reset, wipe cache, and flash roms. I'd wager that's what 95% of people use them for. What is there left to be done in recovery development that can slam another recovery to the ground, when it does the 3 things everyone uses it for?
Aside from the dead battery charging issue in CWM, the only thing I see in Amon that's handy is rebooting back to bootloader.
I'm sure I must be missing something - something I don't need, but is apparently monumental?

TWRP 2.10 Coolest Recovery Ever :)

OK I have been flashing, rooting, jailbreaking, housebreaking, just braking for ever....
So far I have to say that TWRP 2.10 is like the coolest Recovery ever.
A big hand to those who made it possible.
I know this rant may sound crazy but its sooo true.
This is a bit nicer (TO ME) than CWM. No offense to Koush ofcourse.
But wow the team has really come through with this recovery.
Thats my 2cents.
Anyways thanks for listening Toodles
I haven't tried it out yet, but it has some extremely stiff competition with 4ext.
