To answer your first question a little more clearly. The only advantage so far is that it would keep us up to par with others using CWR. We are far behind in our scripting style vs. other phones that use it.
For number 2. I think it highly depends on if you are saving apps vs apps and system data. I have seen it not save some passwords for random applications but if I run system data as well (which I hear is hit or miss) it will save the passwords.
You can also backup kernels with CWM 3.x

I restored all my apps + data... but yet none of my games saved. any idea why? I run a backup every night at 3am for all new apps & newer versions... am I doing this wrong?
To be accurate you are the user and I assume you are talking about your contacts.
A little more info would be helpful. Are you contacts stored on your phone or google, or are they linked?
Do you use VZW Backup assistant?
Where are you not seeing them?
What steps did you use to back them up in TiBu.
TiBU has a good WiKi. Not trying to me a dik, there is a lot of good info there. A google search will bring it right up.
I keep my contacts in google so backing up is a non-issue.

Saved game states are not part of the newer versions. Before wiping I choose menu/batch/Forced redo of your backups. And that will update your new saved game states.

Im trying to add my events from my prior calender to my new one. I tried restoring the data and app and then the data and nothing appears. This also goes for my contact list. What a pain. Let me know what im doing wrong.
The wallpaper is such a headache to get right. Is there anyway i dont have to use that green box so the image isnt distorted?

Your contacts aren't saved to your google account? Isn't calendar saved to google too?

Agree with Josh.
Your contacts and calendar should be synced through Google. That should be the easiest thing when switching ROM's.
And I don't personally like Titanium, On a fresh ROM install I rather let it re-download the apps for a fresh install. Time consuming, but worth it.
nothing comes back the gmail account is checked under calendars.

yea it says it was completed. then nothing is changed after.
With updates of ROMs being released so quickly, and not wanting to update rather than flash the full ROM, I'm going to start backing up using Titanium Backup.
I am quite happy to backup absolutely everything, but am cautious about restoring things like system settings. Ideally what I would like is to be able to restore all the apps that I had before, their data, and possibly the layout of my homescreens.
How would I do this?
Is there anything I should probably not restore that could mess things up?

You can backup all apps and data and then restore them later, without worrying about side-effects. This backup will include your launcher and therefore screen layouts, but will not include widgets. You'll need to add them again manually after you restore (it's a permission thing - nothing other that your is allowed to put widgets on your home screens).
System settings is a different story. If you're going from one ROM to another, or changing FW, there could be conflicts and it could cause problems. I tend to always have a backup and only restore system settings if I need to factory reset for some reason.
If you haven't already, I'd strongly recommend paying for the pro version, as it can become very boring having to click a couple of buttons for every app you want to restore. The pro version does all apps without the need for interaction.
The easiest way is this: go into titanium backup and press the menu bitten on your phone. Then press batch. Then look for something that says backup all user apps. Click the bitten next to that that says run. Then check 'backup user apps + data' and then uncheck any apps you don't want backed up, and then click run on the bottom. This will backup all your downloaded apps and data, like saved games, etc. You can also do the same things for system apps, but I can't guarantee that they will all work. Hope this helps

If you click batch all your apps are selected so you can backup all your apps with 1 clicks, even with the unpaid version. However with the paid version you can set up scheduled backups so it will backup automatically every week, or whenever you set it to

I was talking about restoring, not backing up. Have you ever restored 200 apps with the unpaid version? It's VERY boring

That's the process mate - you've got it.
Titanium Backup requires that you have USB debugging enabled, which you get to via Settings, Applications, Development.
As for backing up and restoring text messages, I simply could not recommend any higher an application called SMS Backup+ (free in the Market). It creates a folder in your Gmail account and automatically uploads all text messages to that folder. You can do a restore whenever you like. It's seamless and works perfectly. If you want to keep SMS then look no further! I've gone over easily 30 ROM flashes with it, and now a new phone, and have never lost a single message.
It also means, of course, that you can access you SMS from any browser, which is nice (Can't send from gmail though.)

Ok, last question. Can I just have usb debugging enabled at the time that I backup and at the time that I restore. I prefer to not have it checked generally - lots of annoying pop up messages on my PC at work etc...

Ok so one last question. I understand that Titanium Backup will save the data for my third party launcher, so will preserver all the homescreen arrangments. But if I use TouchWiz, would that count as a system and therefore not preserved if I only backed up and restored user apps and data?

You might be able to backup and restore the data for touchwizz, not tried.
As far as system data, if the item is green in titanium is ok to restore, if its red, beware.
AFAIK, TouchWiz is just another launcher, so you should be okay to restore, but pay attention to the item colour, as mentioned by veyka.

I'm not sure about this one as I've seen different things happen. Sometimes, I've had apps installed again after a new ROM flash, but other times that hasn't happened. I've also had inconsistent results with restoring wifi settings. The only thing I generally rely on Google to store is my contacts. Other than that, I use Titanium for everything, just to be sure.

I have Apex launcher pro and Titanium Backup ★ root pro.I made a TB backup in cm9 . I restored all of apps and data and it went well on ParanoidAndroid 2.55cm (4.1.2):. But

I've been a long time CleanROM user, finally decided to upgrade to ICS based ROM.
I did upgrade without wiping data and Sense didn't work at all. After wiping and reinstall everything worked, but of course all m data was gone. I restored "all system data" from backup, and it killed Sense again.
So, what subset of the system data can I safely restore? I need things like SMS and call logs, bluetooth and wifi pairings, user account info entered in apps and so on.

Restoring SMS, call logs, bluetooth and wifi pairings are all fine. I have found, as you did, when you restore all data it really buggers things up.
I use SMS Backup&Restore from the Play store. Works great the several years I have been flashing ROM's.
I'm looking at the pre-upgrade backup- it has 1164 files. Which ones should I include or exclude from restoring?
I think I found SMSes in com.htc.messagescs, but I can't search in each archive file.
Yea you shouldn't do an "all data restore" when switching roms, especially when going from GB to ICS. You should ONLY restore data from apps, never restore system/settings data. Since roms are made differently (again, especially when going from GB to ICS) restoring settings/system data will mess up the rom. So just restore data from the apps you want, backup/restore SMS with SMS Backup and Restore, and then just manually change your settings and set-up your home screens the way you want. It takes an extra few minutes, but it will save you the hassle of things not working how they should.
SMS and MMS are stored in [SMS/MMS/APN]Dialer Storage.

User account info within apps can usually be restored with restoring user data apps only. You will hardly ever restore "system apps". They are usually unique to the individual ROM, in my experience.

So, why do I need Titanium Backup, if I have to use a separate app to restore SMS? What do I do about the call logs? Are they part of the system or user app dataset?

The only thing I use TB for is to backup/restore apps and their data.
Call logs are located in "[CONTACTS/CALLS] Contacts Storage". Not sure if it is system data or user data set.
Also, here is a good How-to on backing up SMS/MMS and Call logs. Have not had the chance to try it out myself. LINK

You CAN use it to restore sms, however that usually will also restore call history etc, which again, can cause you problems, especially when going from GB to ICS.

I restored GB from nandroid and made 2 backups in different directories. One for user apps+ data, another one for system data. Wiped, installed an ICS ROM. Restored apps+data from the first backup. Next I switched to the system backup and restored only data files (green in TB). Not all of them, only ones with the names that made sense. It gave me SMS and call logs, BT pairings, FB account. The list of WiFI APs was restored, but yheir keys passwords were not. None of the widgets came back. I had pretty time consuming setups with Beautiful Widgets and Circle Launcher and was hoping to continue using it.
It seems that there is no easy way to switch ROMs without some butt hurt.

Remember you ate switching base, not just the ROM. So things will be a lot different and so much so that it will probably bork things up.
Also my backup pro is a great tool! Try out the free version in the market.

Why do you think it is better than TB?
Strange, it looks like some people here change ROMs on a daily basis, and I thought that the whole process of transferring the maximum possible amount of settings has been well researched and documented by now.

Not necessarily better I just prefer the ui more. Each has their own pros and cons. Tommytomatoe turned me onto it back in the OG days and I've never looked back. (that guy is a genius) I got MBP on sale for 2.99 and I think it's well worth it. I still use TB, just not as much...

Sometimes crossing over leads to problems, had that trouble also going from GB to ICS!

Having some issues with rom I'm running, but also want to know for when I flash CM10 from sense rom. How can I keep my texts, email accounts synched, app data, or reinstall it after a factory reset type wipe?
Do I go into recovery and install what file? I didn't see data as an option in twrp, only system (for wiping anyways). What is the best way to do this? I'm currently dirty flashing everything, but that won't always be doable.
Specs: S-off, newest radios/firmware, stock/goodies rom. Ummm, twrp 2.2 I believe.
Use titanium backup to back up and restore apps and app data. Emails and contacts are synced with your Google account. It's not a good idea to backup and restore system apps and data. There are apps in the play store for backing up texts.

U know, I did that on my og EVO and hated restoring each app one by one. I have tb premium now though, so I can one click restore right? For some reason not all of my contacts restore with Google, so I don't trust it. Isn't chrome supposed to back up all your passwords and usernames for websites as well?
Sorry guys, haven't wiped data since og EVO. It really got me hating to flash New roms, turned into an all day event restoring and getting it running again.

I use ROM Toolbox Pro rather than Titanium. I have flashed and restored apps/data successfully with RTP, it's worth the price.

Have to look into that. What features make it better than titback, lol? I've seen it in playstore and even reading the reviews don't get too heavy into what's so great about it. I have pretty much all the other tools it has already like file manager, overclock, backup/restore apps.
I believe u. Just really want to know what makes it so good other than a lot of tools in one app.

Nice interface, easy to use.
Backup/restore of apps actually works (I had issues with Titanium)
build.prop editor is included
Ad blocker
You can manage apps (like Titanium) and freeze/uninstall/etc
It also has some ROM management tools that look pretty sweet, though I have not used them to date.
The developer is also easily accessible via email, and is responsive, so if you have issues you can contact him.
