[Q] Atrix not powering on - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My atrix won't power on (dropped in water); I have had it in dried rice, placed in a zip bag, and sun dried....before all that I immediately removed the battery and shook out whatever water i could. I've waited a full day but still no luck; if I remove the battery and plug in to PC with battery removed I get green LED but other than that I get nothing (for example if I switch to wall charger immediately the LED goes out). If at worst case I need a replacement, how difficult would it be to have this done without the AT&T purchase receipt (I'm not an AT&T customer)? I purchased the item on eBay a little over a month ago. I've read in forums to unroot before attempting return but that's not gonna happen (lol). My girlfriend hates that I even got an atrix so she's kinda happy this happened...a little off topic here, but I really love my atrix so can someone please help me out?!

Well, no help cuz no solution is available. Your phone is screwed and if it fell into water, the water seals must be screwed up as well and guarantee is void.
Think about it

Well the green LED comes on when plugged into USB like I said...but other than that nothing...I can't find the OEM charger adapter of all the times to be lost. I guess since other threads were successful in revival I would have hoped I would get lucky. Thank you for your reply.

They will know it's been in water by the sensors. They will also know you didn't buy from them. Best bet is insurance if you have it, but I think you are out of luck.
Beamed in from WinBorg 4G via XDA Premium app

i jumped in the river about 2 weeks ago and completely forgot i had my atrix in my pocket. i would say it was about a good 5 mins underwater. Water damage sign appeared on atrix as well as battery. (red dot). i did the rice thing too..but nothing. unless you're insured..which i was..theres nothing you can do. sorry for your loss.

Does anyone have a general idea of how much it would cost to have the board replaced then?

Is that USD? H%*LY *^&%!! But that doesn't look like the board that I've seen

funny. i looked up the same info as you are. That link is what a friend of mine sent me. so im not to sure. maybe someone here with better knowledge can help you out.

Cheaper to buy a new phone!
You're guessing/assuming it is the board/just the board.

Actually I sat and thought about it and there's the fingerprint and camera to also take into consideration, as well has other functionalities just didn't post. I'm in between studying Windows Server 2008 , watching TV, and just randomly doing other things. Thanks to you all for your help though. I may just try to find an atrix with just a broken screen or just forget about it all together. I've only had the phone for 3 weeks but stuff happens, consider it $500 down the drain .

Disassemble it, take a look at it, remove the corrosion manually. Use a heatgun on the components, but dont overheat it. Afterwards put together and check if battery still has power with a multimeter. Reassemble and plug into wall charger. See what happens

I say this is your best bet. Try this, or get someone with some electronics knowledge to take a look.
It beats just tossing it.
Either that or put it up on ebay and try to recoup some money. someone with a broken screen, or camera might want to buy it for parts.

Question about powering an HTC HD2...

Is it possible to power an HTC HD2 without a battery or the back cover? I found one about an hour ago in my downtown area, missing a SIM card and missing the microSD card. As noted it doesn't have a back cover or a battery, so my intention was to attach a "standard" 5V/1A cell phone battery charger. I figured out from a picture of the battery that if I've got the HD2 flat on the display and I'm looking at the back, the positive terminal will be the one on the left but, when I attach the power supply (which I tested before this attempt, it works) leads using micro-alligator clips and push the power button (front of display, button furthest on the right, I think, never used one of these HD2's before) I get no response.
Now, the question is either a) am I not getting any response at all because the HD2 can't be powered up in this manner because there's no back cover or b) it's more likely to be completely toast because of the damage it apparently suffered in the drop that shattered the glass. The only damage (aside from the glass) is a very tiny scrape/scuff mark on the top right corner of the bezel - obviously that's where it hit the ground.
I don't own any of these apparently micro-USB style connectors (or is it mini-USB, I can't figure out which is which I suppose). Bleh, I just looked at a pic I found with Google Images, apparently it IS a micro-USB connector.
All blabbering aside, even if I had such a connector or a power supply using such a connector, is the phone going to even power up without a back cover on it or battery inside? I know a lot of devices become totally disabled when the back cover is removed (as my Dell Axim X51v does; as soon as I even throw the lock switch to unlock the back cover that disables the device totally.
Anyone able to provide some tips or suggestions? I have no way of knowing who it belongs to so I'm claiming it, and if I can verify it might work or does still function I might be willing to put some money into getting the glass/digitizer replaced, a new battery, power adapter, etc.
Anything at all would probably be quite helpful.
Thanks...
The HD2 works without back cover!
The HD2 doesnt work without battery...!! I've never heard of a mod to enable switching it on through micro-usb.
Be carefull you could be scammed...buying a phone in that state, because of the hit some other components may be damaged!! It depends on the price and money you're willing to risk!
no problem with powering on without the backcover. did that many times before.
but i guess its not possible without a battery...
DN41
Ah, ok, so the fact that there's the two metal 'dots' on the HD2 that apparently become a connection when the metal battery cover is in place don't affect powering it up, but no battery keeps it dead? Hrmmm...
Ok, if someone that owns an HD2 can confirm that it becomes very useful info. Take the back cover off, take the battery out, and tell me if plugging in a micro-USB cable (either from a computer USB port or from the AC adapter) allows it to function at all, and then try the same thing with the cover on (don't put the battery in, however).
So there's 3 possibilities:
1) It'll work off the micro-USB power with no battery and no cover
2) It'll work off the micro-USB power with just the cover installed but no battery
3) It'll work off the micro-USB power with no cover but with a battery installed
and actually the fourth possibility which doesn't matter in my case:
4) It'll work off the micro-USB power with the cover and the battery installed
Dammit I hate it when I find stuff like this and can't get it functional.
Again, thanks for any suggestions - and I didn't buy this phone, I found it a few hours ago, on the ground as I was walking home. I wouldn't buy something in this cosmetic condition unless I knew it was working even in spite of the cracked glass. I've owned iPhones with horribly shattered glass on them but they still function, even all the multitouch functionality is still working - that's my hope here, that this device will still work just fine and if it does then I'll pay to replace the glass/digitizer.
Thanks
Edit:
I think I just realized that the metal contacts on the inside of the back cover and those 'dots' could be because the HD2 is using that battery cover as a Wi-Fi antenna, plate-style antenna.
I just tested it for you. Without the battery in there is no starting it, period.
Might I suggest though that you ask around and find a mate with a microUSB, (you must have someone that has one), and plug it in when the battery contacts are jumped. It will probably work that way. I'm not going to try it because I have a perfectly good phone and have always mistrusted elec-trickery...
those spring loaded studs have been the subject of much discussion, with no definitive answer,, stop the cover rattling, grounding plate for the antenna, remnants of an unreleased car kit,,, who knows. certainly signal doesn't appear diminished with the cover off, and on the inside of the cover there is no coating on the metal where they connect, indicating a signal being passed so who knows.
i suspect simply attaching power to two contacts isn't enough because the third contact is expecting a signal of some kind? perhaps a connection from the battery charge protection circuits?
you could always buy a cheap copy battery from ebay, and just resell it if it doesn't work, or run a scam on your insurance with it? (did i just say that out loud??)
I'll say this again: I found the phone on the ground on the side of the street while walking home a few hours ago.
I don't use T-Mobile service and I have no intentions of using it as a phone; I already have a phone so I was going to use it as a portable media player sorta like an iPod touch if I can verify it works 100% and just needs a battery/back cover/replacement glass and digitizer. That's my intention at this point.
And I was thinking that yes it won't work at all without a battery so, thanks again for the info. I'll head out this morning to a T-Mobile store (actual T-Mobile and not a reseller) and see what they can tell me. Surely they'll have a battery/back cover and potentially an AC adapter to verify if it's 100% dead of somewhat functional even in spite of the busted glass.
Let's hope it works...
what about searching the owner?
DN41
Well, let's see:
- I can't power it up
- It has no SIM card
- It has no microSD card
- The only way to track the owner would be using the IMEI and I'd have to go to a T-Mobile store to do that, when that's done and they get the number, if the phone was stolen and then dumped in the trash/on the street where I found it, they call the police and I get in a bit of trouble for no good reason
That pretty much covers it.
okay, you're right...
i cant imagine how it landed there...
who would throw it just away?
sure that its a real phone and not a dummy?

Well, Yeah, with an iPhone 4 what else WOULD you do if you don't want the surgery to be able to use it! LOL
Also think if it was your phone! I'd be absolutely gutted, and very glad to get it back. But maybe it's unregistered (through the IMEI) or not been reported as missing.
In the UK (don't know about elsewhere) if you report that you found something to the police (I found a £50 note) and no one can show that they own it then it's yours after about 28 days.
Unless you have really dumb cops then you shouldn't get into trouble if you take it in!
On the other hand you may find the battery and/or cover if you look carefully in the area where you found the phone.
Sam.

I think those contacts are just to ground the back cover to stop it causing interference. It doesn't seem to affect the phone if I don't have it on or am using the plastic cover with my big battery.
On a similar theme, does anyone know if it is possible to power the HD2 from the micro USB supply while I swap batteries. I don't want to have to do a soft reset which loses what you are doing. But I'm worried that without the battery to absorb the power there is a risk of damaging the circuits?
I don't want to just try it because I already blew my main board by powering the USB through a cheep adapter and a Nokia charger that supplied too much power and had I to get it repaired/replaced. I'm hoping someone already knows

Shaking my phone turns it off

I'm having a weird issue with my vibrant. When I shake it turns off. I never had a problem with my phone before this is a first. Could it be a manufacturing problem? And if i take it to T-Mobile what could they do for me?
Only reasonable thing might be the battery moving, but thats weird...
lol... i find it funny sorry
so you just SHAKE IT and it turns off?
Yep, call TMOBILE tell them the issue, get a replacement, if its under 30 or is it 60? days you get a brand new phone, Vibrant.
If its over that, you get a REFURB, which MAY have problems, but if it does.. you just call em again and do the same thing for another Refurb.
There ya go.
I found it funny too. I know for sure they'll give me a refurb that I know I'll hate. TMobile will only give refurb replacements correct? Because I sure as hell would like to get a different phone from them. Using my phone as credit or something then paying off the difference if thats possible.
Shaking it and dropping it hard on a desk turn it off.
Stick a piece of cigarette pack alongside the edge of battery. Works every time.

Yes or roll a piece of paper tape to slightly bigger than the crack between the battery and the housing, then insert. This also can be done on the back should that be necessary--------

its like when someone goes to the doctor and says "Doc my arm hurts when i do this" and the Doc replied "then don't do that"
So my suggestion is Don't shake it.
Or just get a one of those extended battery gizmo. it may just do the trick.
Cheers!
LOL, I'm sorry but this is great. Can OP please add a pole of how many people actually started shaking their phone after reading OP. I did

As others have said, a folded piece of paper between the battery and the back case will fix you right up. I had the same issue ;-)

[Q] Battery problems after water damage

I am having a problem after my phone was dropped in water. The phone is now fully dry but I am having battery issues. It seems that the phone believes the battery to be empty all the time. I can charge it whilst the phone is off until it states it is at 100% but as soon as i turn it on it says the battery is at 0% and turns off even whilst plugged in.
I have flashed a few different roms to see if the software had any bearing on it. The only difference I got was with CM 10.1 I was able to run the phone whilst it was plugged in but as soon as I unplugged it died.
I have tried the battery in other phones and it works fine and I have tried batteries from other phones (ones that I know are fine) and it says they are empty.
I did have one case when the phone came on and stayed. The battery level stuck at about 70% and never decreased over 24 hours. As soon as I rebooted it it said it was empty.
To me it seems like the bit of hardware that checks the battery level is failing. I have opened up the phone and given it a clean but no joy.
Any Ideas?
Yes since sensitive electronic components dont seem to mix well with water youll have to replace them.
Start with the usb board, then maybe motherboard if nothings changed.
Can anyone point out on the boards which bits are responsible for power management.
Also where would I be able to get replacement boards from?
TheUnderling posted a link to the service manual a week or so ago, search through his recent posts to find it. That has schematics/parts lists in it.
Re: getting another board, your best bet is to find a screen damaged phone on eBay or similar, Samsung aren't in the business of selling just motherboards (they'll charge you maybe half of what a new phone would cost to replace it).
You could see if Kevin Costner is going to make Waterworld 2,then he could maybe buy it off you.
You can get a new s2 now for £199.99 from Orange.

Sorry,I shouldnt make jokes about it.What to do is take it to the man from atlantis and get a quote for a repair.
I don't mind you making jokes actually. It means you keep bumping my question to the top of the boards and then maybe someone who actually is helpful may help me out.
You got your help. The motherboard (at the very least) is cactus. And maybe other components. What else are you hoping for anyone else to tell you ? You dropped the phone in water, think about it. Ain't rocket surgery.

Hes got to start "splashing" the cash on a battery>usb board for starters.
And whos to say it aint going to end up in water again.
Best to sell the phone on and hope a mug buys it.
I guess I was juts hoping for more positive suggestions rather than sarcastic comments
Theres no point in having a go at me or mistahbungle, its "water off a ducks back" to us.
Youve been advised what to get(if you must)....in cheapest order. You can hit the search button and see threads about water damage which will give you an idea of solutions.
Ive read 100's of posts about water damage and some people have not had any problems.

Droid DNA Wont Power On

So I have seen several threads on this. Need your guys help.
This is what I had before **** hit the fan.
Droid DNA
Rooted/S-Off/Unlocked
CM 10.2 Nightlies
In working condition when I went to sleep....
So what happen, who knows. I was playing D.O.T before hitting the sack. Battery was at 48% before locking the screen. Thought about charging my phone but decided that my HTC One needed to be charged first. Fast forward 6hrs later, HTC One giving me the green light that its good to go but my Droid is not tuning on. NO CHARGE Light, NO USB CONNETION, NO LIFE. I thought that maybe phone must have died. Bit weird though as it was only 6 hrs and I have never seen any of my phones die in 6hrs and screen off.
I did all of the available troubleshooting as I can think of.
Hold Volume - & Power Button - 30 Secs NO GO
Hold Volume + & Power Button - 30 Secs NO GO
Hold Volume +&- / Power Button - 2 mins NO GO
No go... thought maybe system may have been stuck or super deep sleep.
Apparently i dont have warranty with Best Buy. they scammed me, screw them, for another topic... So
Pulled back battery cover...
Unscrewed the screws that hold battery cable. Pulled out and waited 10 min before replugging it back in. NO GO.....
Took apart phone, took MOBO out, USB chip, top chip that hold the SIM, left everything out for about 12hrs, took a break and put everything together NO GO
So I consolidated with some friends and they had some success on their about this matter.....
Connect USB into Computer for 10 min then battery reset by Volume -+ and Power Button for 2 min NO GO
Charged for 12rhs Via Computer and did above NO GO
Charged for 12hrs via Power outlet NO GO
At this point Im leaning towards hard brick but idk how, didnt really do anything last night. Just sat there next to my other phones. No auto updates or anything that would require system reboot of anything of the sort.
At this time I have no charge light, no sign of life, and im about out of options at this time. I would send out to JTAG team to get it fixed but I dont have the cash to send out. My concern is that I recently bought the phone back in July and now Im bummed that it deosnt work. Money well spent but now a brick. Reverted back to my Note 2 and Moto X for the time being but would like to have her back up and running as I personally liked the phone.
Anyone recommend any option that I havet listed above or is there a way I can JTAG the sucker at home?
Also, as you can imagine from the the above, I have no way to adb and try to force something in it if software related....
*sigh....

So called Verizon and told them that my phone has does not turn on at all. they troubleshooted with me on the phone.....
Nothing worked......
They said that they would send one out but I had to ask....
I have a small crack on the screen and that it didn't affect the phones ability to be used right. They said that well they could replace it but if the phone is serviced and they find out that the crack was some how the main reason that it was the problem (Keep in mind this is Verizon we're talking about) they would slap on the the full price of the phone on my bill.....
To my knowledge and experience sounds like the board took a crap and even if the replaced the screen, the board would still need to be changed out. If they say it was the screens fault, I cant say it wasn't it was the board because they'll question why I think that and how would I know, did you open it?
I did save the void sticker and it does show small signs that I was in there but I hate to risk having my account charged at full price for a phone.
Such a dilemma as its a brand new phone besides the crack in the screen. I talked to my coworkers about this and they said I could wait for a DNA to come in as a sale or total lose and try to snag the MOBO but who's to say that phone isn't blacklisted or worse.
All of the phones I have are what I call Frankenstein phones. I work in a shop that repairs cell phones/xboxs/ps3/computers and we pay for broken crap. Most of the time its a screen problem. They dont get insurance and dont take care of their phones so I scrap them and use different parts from other phones to build one. The only phones I eve bought was the DNA, Droid Razr, well most droid serious going back to OG..... just a Droid person.... stick it to IOS and Apple, lol.....
But back to the problem, I could wait for something to come in but again, they usual call VZW and blacklist it and then only good for screen, usb chip, and SIM/earphone jack chip.
What bothers me is that I bought the phone with my own money versus having parts come in and just putting them together so having a brand new toy break hits hard.....
I tried to see if there is any at home JTag is available but all i find is links to send it out to online place that services everyone....
Try a different battery. Maybe in those 6 hours the battery the battery discharged below the "point of no return". No battery, no nothing... Even a super bricked DNA will light the led when charging... But take out the battery and you dont get anything...

I have had similar issues. This has happened to me at least twice with the same dna I have. When I tried to charge it the orange light would not even come on.
My solution was to open it up and unplug the battery. If you have not done this yet you probably should. There are two tiny screws holding it onto the motherboard, take those off and pop the ribbon off the motherboard. After that, put it back together and try to turn it on. Make sure your power button gets lined up correctly. If you need to, check some tutorials on youtube on how to take the dna apart.

i have taken the phone apart already, down to the last bolt and sticker in there. nothing..... I tried a different battery from another DNA, no dice. So I can rule out that battery didnt past it point of no return but also means Im still stuck with a brick phone.....bwaaaaaaaa
To anyone who has this problem
I've repaired my DNA two times for this reason. I've try everything, I've taken it apart completely and reassembled and nothing. I end up buy one with a broken screen to salvage the motherboard and BINGO. Got it back to life. (about a year ago)
The second time I got the same problem and just ordered a salvaged motherboard from EBAY. Got it working back again (this was 3 or 4 months ago).
Today guess what happend again??... It died yet again. Same thing... No life whatsoever.
After this I'm pretty sure this is the same fault over and over again. Just a poor quality motherboard, it just dies after some time. For me it took from 1 year to 3 or 4 months. Every time the only component that I swapped was the mainboard, nothing else.
I'm tired of spending money on a phone that by now I'm sure i'll die again. :crying:
This is very sad because I love this phone too much just to let it collect dust on the bottom of a drawer. It reminds me of my old HD2.
I will probably try and find yet another board for it on EBAY.
I know it's stupid to fix something that will almost inevitably die again. But thats love I guess.....
This is just my personal experience with this issue. Please try every other solutions before you buy a replacement board.
PS: sorry about my english. It is not my primary language.
Its sad how common ive seen this issue around the Internet and still no straight forward fix or reason. Just casjy playing some og angry birds and my DNA just decides to turn off. RIP I guess, it was a good run.
My dna died today.
I have not taken it apart yet, but I guess I have tried all the other alternatives.

[Q] replacement battery???

So uhhh imma just cut to the chase me being the smart guy that i am I poked a hole in the battery bag because my back was peeling off and I bought a new plate out it on and it still was peeling off for some reason so I assume it was the battery pushing it off. Some guy on Google+ said he poked a hold in his battery bag for all the air to go out and it worked fine but for me now my phone gets to like 70% - 80% then cuts off I'm feel like that's becuas of the hole I poked and not the ROM. So before I buy another phone are there any replacement batteries or back that come with the battery that I can buy?
I know you probably say why I didn't call Motorola or Google and I did but I don't have another $600.00 for them to do a account hold for a replacement. If you have any other idea I'm all ears.
I'm not aware of any. Just a warning though, don't put the phone near anything flammable. A damaged lipo is a dangerous beast. It's impossible to say what state yours is in, but be careful. And don't ever stab them again. It's a very bad idea. If the battery is creating gas in there, it is damaged and needs to be replaced, not damaged further. It's quite annoying they didn't make them user-replaceable, but it is what it is. Send it back if you can't do an advance replacement.
