Hey, I have got a question concerning the SD card file system. Apparently, the sgs2 only supports Fat32, which has a maximum file size of 4gb... Now, the sgs2 also supports 1080p hd videos. How am I supposed to transfer a 1080p video (which is usually about 8gb or more) to my sd card?
change it to mp4
by using freemake
Thanks for your hint. However, converting mkv to mp4 will make it smaller but the movie will almost certainly lose quality. So this is not an option for me. Is there really no chance to transfer files that are bigger than 4gb???
how about splitting the movie in multiple smaller parts?
Might just be worth formatting your external sd card via PC as ext 4 and see if phone reads it .

Just a question, is there a difference on quality when watching a 720p(1280x720) and a 1080p(1920x1080) on a 800x480(landscaped SGS2) screen?

Yeah tried NTFS and exFAT, but no success... don't know how to format as ext4, since I am using windows. Can someone with linux try it? Or is there a way to format it via windows?
Splitting the video is working, but yeah... not the best choice in my opinion. However, here is nice tutorial: http://www.logichaos.com/joomla/guides/35/60-how-to-split-mkv-to-multiple-mkv-files.html
i would almost certainly create a phone version rather than keep if full hd and waste 75+% of the detail. If you did a transcode to actual phone res then the file size will/should be 25% or less of orig size, and you will possibly get a visual improvement if there is a 1:1 ratio for the phone.

Then I would start to look at kernels that have ntfs or ext3/4 support for sd cards (surprised ext3/4 didn't work tbh), blame microsoft for coming up with and amazingly fragment-able limited file system
I blame them all the time when I shoot with my HD camera onto CF cards and after 8 minutes at 40-50mbit it stops recording (4GB limit) I blame them and the manufactures for adopting fat32!

You could put the 8GB movie on the internal memory instead of the SD card.
[EDIT] NVM. I thought the internal memory was formatted differently. I'm sure I read somewhere it formatted as ext4 or exFAT. :/
And the result : No joy ext3/4

pretty much the SD card is formated to VFAT. as we all know vfat has a file size limit of 4gb. this is bad considering that i want to put the last mma fight on my phone so i can watch it during work and its 7 gigs. so i went to the terminal to see what filesystems they had mounted. they have ext3 partitions so i formated it to ext3 then changed all the partitions back and tried to mount it but it refused to mount and the system didnt even recognize the card. i really dont care the fs it can be ext2-4, xfs, rieser what ever as long as i can put 4+ gig files on it
You might be better off taking a different approach and crunching down the video file you have. Use handbreak on your PC to crunch it into something smaller. You shouldn't lose quality seeing as you are viewing on a 4.3" screen.

where is that option i looked through everything and cant find it. also whats the point of a 1080p x264 on a screen that is 960x540?
actually it doesnt really matter since this isnt a handbrake forum. the point is why cant my sd card be a filesystem that the phone is currently using?
More than likely because Windows doesn't support those file systems. Without that support, you couldn't access the card from a Windows PC. Granted, not everybody uses Windows but the vast majority do. There's ways around that problem but most people don't know anything about that either. Bottom line is, well, my guess is anyway, they are trying to make things as simple as possible.
Seems to me NTFS would have been a better choice as far as Windows goes but then you run into similar problems for those using Mac puters. Fat32 on the other hand, can be read and wrote to by either OS and Linux also. So.......
windows not being able to read ext3 has nothing to do with the fact that the x2's internal filesystem is ext3 but for some odd reason if you insert an ext3 formatted sd card it cant be read
Hey guys.
I know that 64GB micro SDXC Cards are no supportet by our X10.
But has someone here testet this ?

Well, well, well...This would be an early christmas for me if it works. Have been forced to constantly streamline my music collection and dare I say with the new Xperia specs showing just 32GB internal storage and no micro SD card support, I sincerely hope Sony, that if it is true, it is a one off experiment. The average consumer hungers for more storage each time, fact.
Even the newer phones came out these few months only supports 32GB micro SD.
And by the way, I thought all Xperia phones are using micro SD?

Guys I' taking the plunge. If you see the youtube clip from the 1st post, all we need is to format it (probably with a SG SII) which should change the format to fat32 readable by our devices. If it should come to the worst I'll flog it on the SG II xda site or ebay.
Update 14/11/11 64GB micro SDXC Card works flawlessly with X10. Simply insert new card, phone will not recognise the format and will give message that card is damaged. Simply format (which is erase micro sd option on X10) and ENJOY!

It's not about the reformat. It's lower than that.
When id comes to SDcard readers, micro or normal, there are basically two types:
Type 1:
Hardware/firmware-driven, that uses it's own hardware to manage the basic functions of the SD-card and presents is as an UMS device (USB Mass Storage)
The benefit from those readers are less utilisation of the main CPU followed by higher throughput.
The backside is the limited support of what standards it can use.
Type 2:
Software/"dumb" reader. It'll just provide a "physial" connection to the underlying USB-system, and presents it "as is": a SD-card flash memory.
In this "dumb" mode, the Operating system must provide all the routines in order to communicate properly with the attached SD-card.
The benefit with those are full range compatibility with future standards, but it depends on software, drivers and the main CPU, which might result in slightly lower speeds and "sluggishness" as the IO-operations increases.
However, if the OS and the SDHC/SDXC drivers in question is poorly optimised, the hit on the CPU can be drastically high whenever a read/write occurs.
So, which one is prefered then?
It's up to the manufacturers of the hardware and the operating system.
In our case here, Android can use both UMS devices, as well as generic/default SDHC and SDXC flash cards.
In my opinion, the type 2, "dumb" readers, are the "best" ones.
The only limitations of what cards these readers can use, is only limited by the operating system and the kernel modules/drivers provided.
And the "load" on the CPU as generally so small it's often neglectable, provided the drivers and OS is well optimised.
Which type the X10 smartphone uses I cannot tell.
I simply don't know, but it sounds promising, as there haven't been any "corrupted data" reports from the few who are using 64GiB cards...
... yet!
If the X10 smartphone does utilise the type 1 reader, the firmware/hardware based one, it might "kick back", as data stored beyond the 32 GiB limit of the readers limitation, might just "disappear into the void", never reporting any errors.
Users might notice this first when they try to access the previous stored files and finds out the content returned are just a stream of nulls. (null = digital void, nothing, nada, true zero, blank)
If and When this happens, only time can tell.
Someone has to try fill the card "to the brim", and copy back the content verifying everything is correct and proper.
Not just the filenames and filesizes, but also the content itself. (Checksum methods should suffice)
Just to +1 the above post. When the manufacturer states a maximum card size its not what the phone can mount but what it can reliably use. There's a good chance that you'll have corruption if you continue to use it.
Anyone got any news on this?
Does it truly work with all 64 Gibibytes, or is only half of it useful as I suspect?

I doubt you will be able to get NTFS to be recognized by Android. Maybe try EXT3. Then the hard part is getting Win 7 to recognize the EXT3. Should work in a VM or possibly with ext2fsd (maybe install and run in XP mode)?

why dont u stick the microSD to ur RAZR, and as long as the RAZR recognizes it, plug ur phone to ur Windows PC USB, select "USB Mass Storage", and drag-n-drop.

5GB is WAY too big for a movie, period. I have 2 TB of full length feature films and NONE of them are over 2GB in size and I watch them on a 60" LED TV.
So you need to re-encode that movie and any other movie you have to something more "NORMAL" for your intentions.
use a program called HandBrake, encode to .Mp4. If you're not familiar with this area of expertise I go read up on it.
another poster was right, FAT32 is 4GB limit. You can't format a MicroSD to NTFS.
Regardless, no video should be 5GB, unless you've combined all three Lord Of The Rings movies into one long 9 hour film, into one AVI container.. lol who would do that? >.>

I disagree. I have 2TB loaded up with Blu-Ray Rips (that I share on my network using PS3 Media Server). I rip then re-encode them to x264, 1080p, keep original frame rate, AC3 5.1 audio, in a MKV container. My file sizes are 8gb (so I can fit them on a dual-layer dvd that can be played and saved on a PS3). I found this to be the best final result. I have used Handbrake but I found better results with XVID4PSP.
If you can't see a difference between your rips and an original blu-ray then that's great for you but I'm sure most people would see a huge difference. There's no way to compress a movie that is 30gb in size to something smaller than 5gb without a huge drop in quality.

First if all this is a waste of time. There is no reason to play this file on your phone. Code the file in the resolution of the qhd display. You are not losing anything in the quality of the movie when it is displayed on your razr.

Bummer, think I remembered wrong, its only supported on android tablets.
Think there is a thread though to make it supported somewhere on XDA....
Anyways, if you want to watch it on your phone then rather re-code...but if you wanna movies on TV through an HDMI cable...its gonna be tough with fat32
I tried exFat with ICS on the Razr and it still doesn't natively support it. Shows the Damaged SD Card and prompts to format.
Bringing this back from the dead, did anyone find a work-around here? The 4GB file size limit is a bit of a pain for those of us doing 1080p rips to display via the HDMI out. I could put these files on the Nexus no problem, and this may be an area where Razr loses out big time.

I thought the razr HDMI out only supported 720p res, so While I agree with the concept (as I have several 1080p rips around 8 gigs myself) 1080 is simply more then the phone will output thru the HDMI.
I understand the problem, but I'm still a bit unsure as to *why* it's a problem. Why on Earth are you using your phone to output 1080p files to your TV? You spent $200-$600 on a phone to do something like this when you could spend under $100 to get a device that does it better, easier, and more effectively?
Get a cheap Roku or WD Live player. Hell, get an AppleTV and enjoy it. There's no way around the FAT32 limitation (none...at all), so look for another solution.
how about trying wireless transfer over wifi? (dunno if the 4gb limit still applies..) or perhaps a better way would be to try a file splitter n split it into half n once both parts have been transferred to memory card to join them back again??
hope it helps!!
I saw somewhere in RAZR forum ntfs.ko module to mount NTFS partition, I'm not sure if it's working with SD-CARD. It's compiled for 2.3.6 so I'm also not sure if it's work with ICS.
Just search for ntfs.ko

Did Nvidia lift the 128GB limit?
What about formatting? NTFS or FAT32 or exFAT? They wanted to support more, but I never realized any news about that.
Don't know if the 128GB limit is based on their QA testing or a software/hardware limit. It doesn't seem to be a limit on my K1. Have not tried NTFS/EXT4/FAT32. So far just using it as internal storage on Marshmallow (Android 6.0).
Just a tip for anyone with lack of knowledge: SDXC supports up to 2TB, though most OEMs will advertise what is currently being sold at most for the general consumer. Just look at any modern compact system camera for reference with RAW support and you'll know what I'm talking about.

There's NO SUCH THING as 128GB limit. It's either 64GB or 2TB and nothing in between.
Even without exFAT, you can make 128GB SD/TF card work by formatting it as FAT32 on your computer, it just won't be standard-compliant. To claim [insert arbitrary >64 number]GB support, you must have exFAT.
I own a nvidia shield tv and a sandisk 200Go microsd. I can insure you that 1/ nvidia just test with 128Go sdcards ntfs formated, nothing else, 2/ the 200Gb even when ntfs formated (196go left) is seen as a 183Go disk by the shield, but 3/ even if that 183Go I have frame freeze and sounds glitches when playing moovies from the disk. I suspect a serious limitation within android 6.0 to support "large" sdcard. I have no issue playing the exact same movie on the shield from a 16go usb key. I tried ntfs, hfs+, exfat (the worse which makes several media player crash) with no real success. In my opinion, it's related to the size and also bitrate (read in this case) not sustained by the shield / android tv. I ask nvidia to look into the issue and a "case" should be opened but if it's related to android it's more an os issue that google should take care of. This is the answer I am expecting from nvidia next level support. Best regards,

But this will likely only work on external storage mode, because the device re-reformats the card for internal storage again.
