[Q] Link2SD vs. wipe dalvik cache vs. out of space - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Was already asked on the original Link2SD thread but cannot find the answer anywhere there.
Say you have tons of stuff installed via Link2SD on /data/sdext2 (extX partition on SD card). Now:
- you go to recovery and wipe dalvik cache (or use something else to wipe it, does not exactly matter)
- on reboot, the cache gets rebuilt on /data
- hmmm, I said I have lots of stuff on SD
- so, you run out of space on /data ?! Now what?
IOW, how early does the Link2SD thing kick in? Does it prevent such things?

Hmmm... so, I wonder whether my question is too stupid or too difficult.

I'm also using link2sd with about 261 apps installed (according to Titanium Backup count)
Here's the step on my Optimus One (total internal memory: 209 MB)
before clear dalvik: I have about 78 MB free
1. boot to recovery (i'm using CWM) > advanced > wipe dalvik
2. reboot system
3. first time get into OS, there's notification low space on phone's memory
4. checked free space: only 28 MB free
I have to manually link dalvik cache to achieve the free space before (78 MB).
Thanks to the dev, on Link2SD 1.9.1 there is a menu to relink all dalvik cache at once, so I don't have to recreate link per one apps.
I think link2sd automatically link app-dalvik-lib files for newly installed apps only.
It can't detect a dalvik file recreated back into phone memory with apps still installed.

got the same problem.
It's a big issue when changing kernel and stuff

[Q] Link2sd issues.

I created a partition of 512 MB on my 16GB card to install LINK2SD but eventually ended up formatting my whole data. I did install Link2sd and then moved up all the huge apps like Yahoo Messenger with the plugin and other games and stuff. I had free internal space of about 77MB, I switch off my phone and I turn it on and its 33MB. What to do?
have you do titanium backups or nandroids before using link2sd? it is possible to damage your system severely and you shall have done that.
second, for ur issue, try checking the memory displays in link2sd
are you sure the app "link2sd" is placed in the phone storage? it may have moved back the apps after a reboot
did you note down what was the internal memory space before performing link2sd? was it 33mb?
hope i helped and good luck

Yeah I restored my titanium backup. Before installing link2sd it was around 28 MB. After moving the apps it was around 77MB and now after a restart its like 33MB. Yes I did check from the storage info option of link2sd.
I heard [Read rather] somewhere that Link2SD sometimes unlinks the libraries after a reboot, If you had cleared the dalvik cache, the dalvik cache of all the linked apps would have also been unlinked. So, if you link all the apps again, It will again free the space on your Phone memory. I have to do it everytime I clear the dalvik cache or I reboot my phone for some reason. It is irritating because I have 93 apps and It is time consuming to do all manually everytime.

ahaha, true true
so i recommend app2sd+ instead of link2sd or whatever2sd, of course only if your rom supports it
I've never had Link2SD unlink anything. If you have any apps on the sdcard prior to use, it screws up, and if you move widgets it will as well, but I've been using Link2SD with stock LGP509T rom for months now with 0 issues like what you're describing.
If you wiped dalvik cache, you need to relink it. For libraries, do not bother, they will just get extracted back no matter what, so...

[Q] Is there an app that allows full apps2sd?

I've been wondering if there's a way to do a full apps2sd without making a partition on the sd card. My ace is running a stock rom. Rooted and running 2.3.5. The internal memory really sucks and I'm thinking of getting a 8GB micro sd just to store it all.
Any hints or tips?
what do u mean by "full"?
if u just search a2sd on market, many of it will allow moving app to sdcard without even creating partition. but it just move apk tho. dalvik cache and data still occupy internal memory.

I have an app called app 2 SD from the market and I don't think it does what it says. If all the apps were installed on the SD, wouldn't the internal memory be almost completely free? Or do I have a misunderstanding of apps2sd? Unless the apps2sd are different for custom roms or something?
u need to also install a2sd enabler to be able to move all apps that previously restricted by android system to only install in internal. but then most widget would be unusable if move to sdcard using that a2sd app from market. and also as i said earlier, it will only move apk. dalvik cache and data still occupy internal so it will eventually become cluttered and full again.
also i think users here if talking about a2sd, it means darktremore a2sd script. it allow moving full dalvik cache and data to sdcard without giving problem to widgets, but it needs second sdcard partition.
so to answer ur question, and if by "full" u mean full moving of dalvik cache and data to sdcard without second partition, no... theres no a2sd app that can move dalvik cache and data to sdcard without second partition. none that i can think of. darktremore a2sd script and similar variant script that can fully move dalvik cache and data to sdcard needs second partition.
the simplest way is make an ext partition using cwm recovery and use link2sd to link the apps to sd card. it also moves the dalvik cache and dex to sd. I am using link2sd and it does what it meant to

I had same problem, but what i did is that,
I used "MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition" it is free working on windows. I used it to
1- remove all the partition from my sdcard, then
2- do a partition using 4EXT as a (primary) with 1250MB. and move it the back of the sdcard. (you will know that when you use the MiniTool program).
3- do a partition using Fat32 as a (primary) with the rest of space, you may note extra blank area usually 8MB, that fine just forget about it .
4- upload all the roms you like to the Fat32 part of your sdcard.
5- Wipe:
1) wipe data/factory reset
2) wipe cache
3) wipe cache + dalvik
4) wipe dalvik cache
5) format all partitions (data, system ...etc) (except sdcard).
then install your ROM.
It works with me from the first time and I didn't get any error.
It you get any error after that. take the battery out for few minuses and repeat the wipe step, 2 times for every thing before you install the ROM.
Good Luck and Greeting from Saudi Arabia ..

DC2SD Problem!

Hey friends,
I Flashed again gingerdx31b(mimmi) after creating a ext partition through CWM and I activated the DC2SD after that I install couple of apps and rebooted my phone and suddenly FC errors are pop up and only black screen, I did it again wiping all but it still happens so I decided to Flash again wiping all active A2SD and there are no errors with it.
Can some one help me to activate DC2SD without that errors! I need it because I saw some one telling its save more system memory more than A2SD!

#Ap2sd moves installed apps from data partition to sdcard & data partition is located at root/data
#Dc2sd moves dalvik-cache from data partition to sdcard & dalvik is located at root/data/dalvik-cache*
#system partition is where rom installs & it's located at root/system
1-data partition size is ~200 mb
2-data partition is not using system partition(they are separated)
3-dalvik-cache uses at MAX 30 mb of your data partition
4-dc2sd makes phone, app start-ups slower... phone will be less responsible & strange fc errors appear ...
5-it's better to wipe cache instead of moving dalvik to sd
6- use android's native app2sd (no partitions needed, move from settings /app manager / tap on any app & press on "move to sdcard " option)

External /sd-ext 75mb of 3.75gb
Cache /sd-ext/cache 75mb of 3.75gb
Applications 10.85mb
System apps 2.0kb
Data 53Mb

Maybe your phone is running heavy apps in the background while you are not using them. Go to settings then apps and then go to running and choose some app and stop them from running while you are not using it.
Apps usually install to internal (/data) partition. Look into partitioning the sdcard and using link2sd to move apps and much of their data into the second partition (rooted phone requiered).
When you move apps to the sdcard, you are only transfering the apk file and libraries (if any). Dalvik cache and internal data go to the internal memory.
If theres free memory in the rom (/system) partition, consider converting your most used apps which remain on internal memory to system apps (youll be moving them from /data to /system).
