It seems like Odin is required to root Galaxy S II. Is there a known method to root using a Mac?
I don't think so. I even had Windows XP running in Parallels 6, but that doesn't work. I ended up installing Vista via Bootcamp and that worked wonderfully.
Damn still no Mac root?? Not possible with Heimdall, adb, update.zip??

Hi, I've just got an X10 Mini Pro and it's still running 1.6.
Have I seriously got to install Windows on my mac just to update? Are there any tools I can use under OSX (10.6)?
I'm not some Apple fanboy that doesn't want windows. I've tried several times, butI simply don't have room for bootcamp (well I do, but apparently the files are fragmented so I cant setup boot camp).
Anyway, cheers!
Either i'm a complete muppet or there isn't a way to get firmware updates to my sgs2 because i have a mac. kies mini doesn't work. does anybody have any ideas?
i would use bootcamp but i don't have a spare copy of windows knocking about.
cheers.

So far Bootcamp has proven the only way. I know it doesn't work under Parallels (which requires Windows as well...so either way you're stuck). Of course you could always resort to borrowing a friend's Windows PC.
yeah i think that's probably my best bet. bloody mac. cheers.

Kies does work in Parallels with SGS2 but I have had problems with drivers for some reason, I could not get it to work with Odin as its not fast enough when connecting to load the initial drivers required, I had to resort to using my company windoze laptop to root and update.
I ran across another XDA thread stating that "neither odin or heimdall will work reliably it at all on Windows XP... but will work fine on Vista or Windows 7". Can anyone comment regarding their experience with Odin running on Windows XP? My desktop runs XP and I successfully loaded Kies (for my Captivate and Infuse)... but I've never loaded/used Odin. My SGS2 arrives in the next day or 2 and not sure if I want to risk flashing using Odin on a Windows XP platform. Thanks.
current laptop.... dead
so all i have is my old media hub which is like 2004. so yea xp SP3 here. used odin just fine. 1.82 or whatever its called. it was an odin3 download. also didn't effect my device at all, started half at home on my old machine, and flashed the cwm patch later at my parents on there vista machine
I recently changed my laptop to yoga pro 2
and this computer has windows 8.1 pre-installed.
my verizon s4 was already rooted and I was able to odin using this laptop.
Now, I'm trying to re-root, but saferoot is not responding to my s4.
For the phone, usb debugging is enabled and for the laptop, samsung usb driver is installed through kies.
Is 8.1 not comparable with S4 or am I missing something?

I think all drivers installed automatically for me on 8.1, and adb/odin worked fine.
On 7, my S4 wasn't recognised other than MTP/PTP while on and Samsung drivers did nothing, but this worked perfectly: https://github.com/koush/UniversalAdbDriver
Yeah you should be able to just install the drivers and it will work not sure if the link just posted will work but if not there not hard to find. Just google s4 root and any number of links will have the drivers on hand.
So I have a rooted Galaxy Note 8 on T-Mobile that is rooted and running build NMF26X.N950USQS2BQL5. I have tried to update this device to Oreo so many times and finally learned the problem is my Windows PC which for some reason won't establish a connection. I believe I should able to do the process with my MacBook but I am wondering if someone can guide me through the steps and if someone has the link for the firmware I need to update to. I really need help.
The problem might not be the computer but the actual cable you are using. Try a different cable and you might get lucky.
Try an older PC, USB 2.0, and have the Universal ADB drivers installed. A Windows 7 machine works best.
