Although I only had the phone for a day now, I've been reading the forum for a month trying to get the info I needed so that when it arrived, I'd be able to load up froyo, wifi calling and be done quickly. I set it all up and downloaded ryan's OCLF, ran it, rooted, installed the ext files, then the v2 lag fix it said to. Everything was great.
Later I downloaded a few apps and titanium backup, but didn't back up yet. I ran the battery down low. Went into the clockwork app that I downloaded and did a backup restore.
About an hour later the battery finally died. I read that you should turn it on until it won't anymore before finally plugging in to charge and wiping the battery settings. Problem is it wouldn't boot up again. Hung on the Galaxy S screen with the shining S.
I could still reboot into recovery and into download. Was going to ODIN back, but my PC was giving me trouble. I pulled the micro sim and thre the ASOP 2.2 rom on it from another laptop dragged it to card removed and popped it back in. I tried to reboot to recovery which worked, then reinstall, nothing. Tried to get to the SD card, but it doesn't find it.
Finally gave up and went back into recovery and did a factory data wipe reset or whatever it is called. When the phone rebooted it all booted fine, no problems at all however I lost every setting account etc..
So here's where I'm at now, i mounted it as USB and looked at the phone from the PC, in the clockwork folder is my backup I just can't get it to load.
I went back to the market and redownloaded the ryan OCLF and removed the lag, ext and root and I'm back to stock. Phone will turn off and back on.
What now? Where did I go wrong, it doesn't make any sense, I followed every instruction exactly as it was written.
I'm a little concerned to root again, but I want to backup settings, accounts etc.. in case this happens again.
first...welcome to XDA...the baddest forum on the planet...
second....this is the wrong section for this topic....should be in Q & A section...but a Mod will take care of that....
third....read this.....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028
the author worked hard on this to become a sticky so noobs will see it first...if u need more info....there is another sticky in the general section...good luck!!
Thanks, I'll read through it now. I thought I had a good idea to drag the new rom to the sd card and fire it up from there, but it failed. Happy I didn't brick the phone. I saw a lot of posts saying ODIN was the only way back, guess I got lucky with the data wipe.
I've had iphones for 2 years and when this happened it would be a conflict with programs, is there a list like that for android like there was for cydia in the iphone info?
I don't know.... but make sure you read carefully before you flash... in a nutshell the steps for ROM flashing is.
1. Root
2. Download and install ROM Manager from market
3. Flask clockwordmod recovery
4. Nandroid (backup)
5. Backup SD card to pc(just in case)
6. Flash your ROM from clockworkmod recovery.

Here's a question I don't think is answered after reading the post. So rooting via OCLF without installing the lag fix v2 is exactly the same as rooting by dragging and dropping.
Rooting in itself can't cause the phone to not reboot, but if you flash incorrectly or apply lag fix and flash over them you could run into trouble. I just can't seem to figure out where the error was. I didn't delete the update zip after rooting, thats the only error I see.
Other issue I noticed is that on mounting to USB after booted I can see the backups, but I can't locate the ROM zip I put on the SD card or the SD card at all.
So let me get this straight... you rooted via OCLF.. but did not apply the lagfix?
Edit: oh I see... u tried to flash a froyo Rom then go back to stock?...
Sent from my XDA app cuz I'm stalking your mom....
No I rooted then applied the lag fix it had available which was version two I believe

Ok... try ODIN back to stock...make sure you have the correct drivers
Sent from my XDA app cuz I'm stalking your mom....
Let me correct what I'm saying, the phone went into the stuck glowing S screen when trying to turn it back on after I ran the battery down to nothing. It wouldn't boot past that point. I tried reinstall, reboot, etc..from the menu in clockwork recov in recov screen as that was all i could get to. When that failed I tried just loading a 2.2 ROM to the sd card direct from my laptop, thought I could just flash from that screen right over everything, didn't work either. Thats when I tried delete all info as a last effort, but then it magically booted back 100% stock, but still rooted. So i reloaded OCLF and unrooted because I don't know what caused the phone to be stuck in the S screen, I didn't flash anything, just did the root and oclf all from ryan's OCLF app
I tried to reroot manual, didn't work, lots of issues, wouldnt root. Went back for OCLF gone. Went for the z4 gone. Found links for both, tried the z4 didnt' work, superuser continiously popping up for permissions, went back removed that and reloaded oclf from web, ran and fixed boot and rerooted, all good. Went back and downloaded and flashed Vibrant AOSP ish JK2 1.1 Official FROYO. Absolutely love it so far. I've been waiting for wifi calling for a long time, it actually works. Problem is I'm not really sure if I rebackup everything now or leave the backups I have from clockwork for stock. I keep reading everything and feel like I'm missing something. I have Vibrant AOSP ish JK2 1.1 Official FROYO saved so I guess if it crashes I just reflash that and don't need a backup, but should titanium backup the whole thing instead now? Sorry if no one replies i get it. Two years of iphone jailbreaking is a waste, nothing like this at all! I will say I never bricked an iphone, feel like i'm gonna brick this thing.
I want to run the OCLF v2, but concerned it's going to cause issues as it's running so smooth right now.
It works fine

version 2 isn't an option, i'm running lag fix one, seems ok I'm having some other issues, but its running

Just to throw it in there... you should always backup your current ROM and all apps using both ROM Manager AND Titanium Backup. It makes it THAT much easier if you do, by chance, have to use ODIN or run a recover, to get your settings, apps, saved data, etc. back without much hassle.
I run a Titanium backup on all of my apps I have loaded (NOT SYSTEM APPS as they are backed up by ROM manager I believe) once a month or so, just to keep fairly recent. It makes it to where, if it does need to be restored, the apps all get re-installed at once including saved data within the app (saved game progress, etc.). This is handy because you don't have to remember what all you had installed and you don't have to go searching through marketplace to get those apps back.
If you are running a custom homescreen (Launcher Pro, etc.), you should also use their backup option to save your homescreen settings.
In short, backup everything you can... it makes 3 hours worth of reloading things condense into a nice little 10-15min "install", "ok" button pressing fiesta!
And, to let you know, I've (as just about 100% of XDA users) flashed, and ODIN'd nearly a thousand times and have yet to brick a phone. These things are crazy indestructible. There's 3 or 4 different ways to get into Download Mode if you get the computer!phone screen... so don't worry about it. The only thing you really lose is time spent getting things back to normal if you screw up. But read up on everything, which it sounds like you already do, before you even attempt anything that could kill the phone. I don't post much on here because just about everything is already answered... you just have to search a little bit.
So today I finally took the leap and flashed my phone (I've had it since it launched). I flashed it with Axura 2.2 and everything went great. I was playing around with it for a few hours, then I got greedy and decided to add the Voodoo lag fix, and this is where things got messed up. Basically, it didn't take, i got a female robot voice telling me I didn't have enough space available. So after that the phone was still working as normal, but I lost all my info saved in the internal memory and the phone started acting weird and wasn't booting up properly. So I did some reading and came to the conclusion that i should go back to stock and start all over again.
That's where I'm stuck right now. I'm trying to use Odin to restore to stock, I downloaded all the necessary files, and entered them into the proper fields in Odin. But, when I connect the phone (In downloading mode) it doesn't say [com7] in Odin like it's supposed to, it says [com3] instead.
And that's where I'm stuck at. Any idea where I screwed up and how to unscrew it up? Thanks....
Redo it com can be anything a long as it connects and stays connected you did it right from what I understand

voodoo has been giving my phone issues as well. argh!
Anyway, like xrider said, I believe any COM is fine.
Odin won't do anything for me with [com3]
I actually got it go to [com4] earlier, Odin did it's job and completed. Once I rebooted the phone, it still wasn't right. It opened up to that screen where you use the volume buttons to move, then press power to enter, like if it was still rooted. I clicked on reboot and it started back up like normal. So I was getting ready to flash axura again, I downlaoded OCLF, titanium, and rom manager again. But when I clicked on the OCLF app, EVERYTHNG was unavailable. So I figured I would try and restore to stock again. And, now I'm stuck there again. I'm getting the [com3] thing again, the phone is in downloading mode of course, but now, i have some red letters on top of the screen that say, "keypressed, 164"
:\
I'll give you my two cents since I had to learn about ODIN the hard way earlier this week. It doesn't matter what com port it shows (mine showed com1 I think, but never 3 or 7). I know you said you were going back to stock, but does that mean your are going back to JFD, or something else? Do you have the 512 pit and the right tar file? Are you repartitioning or not? I certainly don't have all the answers, but it's still a little too fresh in my head to forget. Also once you get back to root, I would highly recommend Nero v3 (I don't run Voodoo. Haven't really understood the advantages/disadvantages, plus it seems like it could be over my head), it's a really great ROM and some of the new mods are starting to come out.....
I was gonna post up some pics of what I'm looking at, but I cant because I don't have enough posts yet! Guess I better whor3 it up!

I don't even know what JFD is When i said stock I meant to well.... stock, like out of the box. I think I have all the right files, I got them off a post here on XDA. As far as repartitioning, I've read to do it, and not to do it, so I've tried it both ways. I might give that Nero v3 a chance. I was really impressed with Axura 2.2. But like I said, I got greedy and added Voodoo-doo
Well I figured out part of my problem, I was using an outdated version of Odin. I was using 1.0, I upgraded to 1.7 and it worked and reset my phone. The only problem I'm still having is, the phone feels like it's still rooted. Do I have to manually unroot it, to get it back to normal? Also, when I open the OCLF app, NOTHING is available to chose from, everything is in red. And lastly, when I hook it up to my pc, it doesn't show up in my computer.

How does the phone feel like its still rooted? If its still rooted you should see the superuser app in the drawer or you can d/l the terminal emulator app from the market and type su. SU will tell you if you have root or not. Aslo try a diffrent usb port on your pc, that happens to me once and a while.

Ok, I was making a mistake, it wasn't rooted after the reboot. It's just something doesn't feel right.
I restored with Odin again, so that's all good. I want to try out Nero v3 this time, like was suggested earlier, the problem I'm having now is, I'm having a hard time downloading from the market. I'm trying to download ROM Manager from the market, but it just says "starting download" and nothing ever happens.
Back in business! Flashed it to Nero v3, this is thing is FAST baby!
Yeah buddy!
I just used ODIN to flash to stock ROM and modem in attempt to solve my problem with adding gmail account to my phone. It worked. I added my gmail account no problem and I was finally able to visit Android market. However, I have new problem now.
When I go to Market and download applications, I see bubble with "Your item will be downloaded" after I click on install button and then nothing happens. Application is not installed. No errors - nothing.
Does anyone have a solution? It would be much appreciated.
settings >> applications >> manage apps >> go to 'all' tab >> look for market >> clear data
after that re-login to market and see if that fixes it
Thank you xtone. I tried that to no avail. In addition to clearing cache on Market I also cleared it from Google Talk as I read they are somehow connected. Then I erased cache of all my apps and still it didn't get me anywhere.
Last thing I tried was to uninstall Market update. After that I have slightly different issue. Now it says 'Starting download....' and it never goes away. Also, it looks like Market re-updated itself to the new version! Is it possible?
I'm having the same exact problem. My issue started with Nero v2 and did not get fixed when I flashed Nero v3. Today, I tried PepperKake to see if that fixed the problem, but that didn't work either.
Even after a fresh install (after wiping and re-flashing, and before restoring my backups from Titanium), I try installing things from the market but nothing works.
If you look closely (at least on my phone), it will say "Downloading..." for a second or two, then FLASH "Download unsuccessful" and disappear almost instantly.
Somebody PLEASE help :'( This is very frustrating.
This happens to me on "occasion" where it says starting to download then nothing happens. The only way I get it to work, is if I cancel the current "download in progress" or whatever it says, then click "Install" once again, and then it starts immediatelly.
Also, I noticed that it was giving problems when I was using the older version of the market. Once updated it went away.

Just tried this, didn't work for me
Things that I found that could fix the problem...
Under settings>applications>manage applica.>running>clear data for "download manager", 'gmail".
Try re-formatting your SD card. Also, Unmount then Mount SD card.
Also, try using either data or WiFi and see if either works.
Do some research on this, there's alot of different threads concerning this issue, with possible solutions.

I don't mean to sound rude, but why would this affect anything? I feel like the problem must be with either the ROMs (JL5 ROMs maybe?) or the Market? As a test, I downloaded something through the browser with no problem. Also, is wiping much different from reformatting? What about disabling, then enabling voodoo (which I had to do in order to try out PepperKake)? I know they said "don't knock it till you've tried it," but backing up everything, reformatting, and then restoring everything seems like a tedious job and I wanna make sure I know why it's worth a try before doing it...
Also, to the OP: sorry if I'm hijacking your post. I just didn't want to start a new post and have people flame me with "THERE'S ALREADY A POST ABOUT THIS!" and whatnot.
Dude, all the stuff I brought up, I found through research in a couple minutes. Some of things I posted ended up fixing the issue for some people and some not. I do not believe the problem resides in the ROM or JL5 (which I'm running with no issue) but rather mods and what not that was installed previously...."ghost"
In the OP he states he went back to stock, so how could it be the ROM???
You don't want to be rude, nor do some research on the problem judging by your response. You want someone to give you an answer is all. Nobody has an exact answer, you just have to try different things and see what works.
"nuff said...do some research.

No need to blow up like that...I was simply asking a question since this is the Q&A forum. I've had this problem for probably about two weeks and I have been searching through the forums, but I've never found a post where someone had the same exact problem (outside of the Nero post, but their questions went unanswered).
You bring up a good point about the OP using a stock ROM. However, I haven't installed any mods (I went straight to Nero from stock), so I'm not sure how there can be "ghosts."
Again, I'm not trying to be rude or appear lazy. There was no need for response like that. I'll take my research to solve my problem elsewhere.
I wasn't trying to be rude or anything.....but yes, there are various topics on issues with the market going from 2.2 back to 2.1 back to 2.2 and so on....hope you can find a solution to your problem, and maybe later share the outcome with us...good luck!
Found the cause but still no fix
Thanks everyone for feedback. After few hours of trying different things I found what's causing my Android market to not work.
Thus far, what I was doing when I got into trouble was:
1. ODIN to stock ROM and pda (repartition checked)
2. root using this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723479
3. as soon as my phone is rooted Android stops working
So I tried to install all the apps I really need first: ROM Manager and TBackup (my ultimate goal is to upgrade to nero3. Everything works great. However to use these apps I need root access.
So then I rooted again using same method as always and I get same result - malfunctioning Android Market.
When I root using above method everything works great but I see old icon of superuser application. Is there a newer update.zip to root my vibrant? Or perhaps different way to root my phone? Can I do it manually?
I have two Vibrant phones. One had no problems when I did above steps. One continues to give me grief!
Even when I odin to stock I know not all the folders get refreshed. What actually is untouched when I use ODIN method to revert my OS?
Duce HD2, what is the best way to eliminate 'ghosting' without bricking my phone? I also believe that it's caused by some mod that was done previously - I bought my phone used.
If reverting to 'stock' image is not good enough what else could I do to clean up my phone? I know for example that efs folder is unaffected by going back to 'stock' as my phone remains SIM unlocked when I do it.
Market problem
I'm having the same problem Nero v3 + voodoo. If you find a solution, please let me know,
Thanks!

I still use the Super User that you have and have no problems....
ODIN back to JFD
Root
reboot into CWM recovery
Wipe cache partition
Advanced
Wipe Davlik
go back
Factory Reset/Restore
and you should have gotten rid of everything
There is an update.zip root on the cynanogenmod ailing page for Vibrant.

The best way ,"I" know, is to ODIN back to stock true (JFD), check repartition. Go through the usual process - root, rom manager, etc. Flash new custom ROM, "important" while it's still in recovery after installation is complete don't rebooot yet, this is where you'll perform these steps:
Wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, fix permissions, perform factory reset. Then finally reboot phone.
I never ran into 1/10 of the problems that I see people having with their devices.
Also, after reboot make sure to leave your phone on idle for at least 15 minutes, so everything can properly get installed. Reboot, log in to gmail, give it 5 minutes, then reboot once again. Good to go.
Just like jmcghee1973 posted.
Give it a try and see if it works for you. Good luck.
Try using one click root as well. Never hurts to try...

Market working again
I followed the odin instructions, went back to stock, re-rooted, then re-installed nero3. This time I didn't restore system apps + data. My market is working. Hope this helps.
It worked for me too when I installed nero3 - market issues were gone.
I am actually not so sure any more that rooting caused the problem. What I observed was that my phone was downloading 'stuff' on its own soon after I reverted to stock image. I know that because I saw few 'download unsuccessful' messages. I also tested this theory - I reverted to stock. Immediately after I could use market but then 20-60 after my Market was not working, even when phone was un-rooted!
I don't know how these automatic downloads were triggered but my latest theory is that they have a lot to do with not working Market app.
Anyway, Nero 3 is not downloading anything automatically and I am really happy with it. Thank you guys for everything. You guys rock!!!
I have a major question. As of a week ago my phone suddenly began taking 20-30 minutes to boot. I'm not quite sure what caused it but one morning my phone booted to a black screen that only showed my toolbar at the top. After it randomly vibrating over a course of 20-30 minutes it finnaly showed my screen lock and wallpaper. Now it does this every time I boot!
I need to know if there is a way to fix it, for it's not only a nuisance but a safety issue. What if my phone were off and I needed to make an emergency call?
Phone Facts:
*Samsung Vibrant
*Firmware 2.2
*Not rooted, but at one time was
*Clockworkmod installed
The default answer is to use ODIN to get back to JFD... if you have issues THEN, well, let us know.
I have a guide in my signature with the files needed as well, going back to stock.
First, is this a known issue that can be solved with ODIN? Also, if I were to ODIN do I need to delete information on the phone or do I just get the stock files, download ODIN, and flash my phone?
This is not a known issue... which you know, because you searched before posting.
You should move any sensitive/important info to your pc and backup... you should not lose that data, but if you do, now you can't blame me.
Just use odin and the files from the guide.
So the data on my phone currently shouldn't interfere with the flash. Because I remeber hearing somewhere that old data from the android market and GPS can mess with the phone after it is flashed causing the GPS and market possibly to not work properly afterward. Is this correct?
Huh? Just ODIN the dang thing back to JFD already! When you do that, all data is erased except what is on your EXTERNAL SD (although this COULD get wiped, but is SHOULDN'T). Back up data on both your internal and external SD's to your computer that you don't want to lose, then follow s15274n's signature links to his tutorial on how to ODIN back to JFD and FOLLOW IT precisely and you will be fine.
EDIT: And when that works, and you're all back to normal again, don't forget to swing back here and THANK every post you can find by s15274n by clicking the thanks button.
I'll be sure to do that, THANK YOU both of you! Especially you s15274n for your wonderful tutorial. It worked like a charm, now all I have left is to replenish my apps and update my phone to 2.2. THANK YOU!!!!!!! No GPS issues, NO Android Market issues, NO issues at all! T-H-A-N-K Y-O-U!
^ Might I encourage you, BEFORE going to stock 2.2...
Maybe root with the update.zip in the guide and flash a 2.2 based ROM (THAT IS STABLE). Your phone will be better than stock 2.2 and you will have a lot more options.
Your call. Just know your phone would be better on Trigger, Zen or Project V than stock.
EDIT, of course I have a guide on that too
EDIT2, saw your post in the guide... also replied there.
Thanks but I think I'll stick with stock 2.2. However, I'm thinking of installing SetCPU but of course () I have a question before I attempt it. If I were to uninstall setCPU will the speed of my phone go back to original stock settings or will it stay with the custom settings I had set?
It would stay with the stock settings.

I have this SAME problem.. 20-30 mins to reboot.. and randomly vibrates while booting up. I just opened a thread about how I can unroot 2.2... you know, please help! I didn't do this until I rooted my 2.2 vibrant. Now i have no idea how to unroot.
Did you read the thread? Odin to jfd.
To answer your boot question LaxHoss it is most likely caused by a glitch in the samsung in vibrant. I came upon a list of glitches on the device a few days ago and discovered this issue. If you are using either the "password" or "pin" password locks on your phone and your phone takes a long time to boot then the screen lock is the cause of the boot issue... To correct simply go to:
Settings > Location and security > Set screen lock > (Then choose "pattern" or "none").
This is how I solved the boot issue for me.
However, for your root issue I would suggest to odin to stock and next time you root use "Z4root" or "Superoneclickroot". Just follow s15274n's guide to odin back to stock, it's real easy.
If going back to JFD, strongly encourage using the update.zip in the guide to root... your pc will think superoneclick is a virus. rageagainstthecage has exploits your pc will hate.
Hey guys,
Just rooted my phone today, and have had a pretty bumpy time. I've made it through most of it, but am having trouble getting a new ROM installed (NilsP's Business ICS Sense 6.4). Basically, install is going fine, but when I make it to the ROM, I get no cell signal, no data, and gps won't turn on.
I'm running S-on, and the install will complete and it will automatically reboot to hboot for the kernel. However, nothing happens that indicates that the kernel installed. Upon reboot, the ROM will open, I'll skip through the setup wizard, and once out cell, data, and gps fail to turn on.
I tried placing the kernel's zip file directly onto my SD card's root drive. Once booted to hboot, the kernel will install. However, problem will persist. I updated to 6.4 OTA with no change. I tried disabling the Fast Boot option and cycled various settings, as suggested in NilsP's original thread. Prior to rooting, I had the most current update from Verizon (pushed through about a week or two ago). I even tried installing with the s-off option, which gave the same result.
I spent about five hours today searching these forums, as well as others, for a similar issue but was unable to find one. Until I figure out a way forward. I feel like I'm missing something simple, since I'm almost there! As I said, I'm a newbie, so forgive me if I misused any terms. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

from the HBOOT
But first... did you put the back cover on again? The antennas are in there so you won't get any service without it on.

Yup, tried with the lid back on, too. Figured there must have been an important circuit with all those contacts in there.
I'll try the reset from HBoot later this evening. I wiped every time I tried to reflash the OS, though only from the recovery menu. I'll let you know how it goes.
Thanks for the help guys, it ended up installing just fine after a factory reset from Hboot. Now I'm running into the same Play Services issue as everyone else using this ROM. Go figure. I'll monitor NilsP's original ROM thread for a solution. Looks like he's working on it already.
