So, yesterday, I attempted to flash an sbf to return back to stock from GingerBlur. I downloaded the 1.2.6, the 1.5.2 and the 1.8.3 files and I've tried flashing all of them.
The problem: After flashing the sbf file(everything went fine with RSDLite), my phone no longer breaks out of Edge and I can't use Gingerbreak to root the device.
I'm not sure as to what the issue is. Like I said, I tried flashing 1.2.6, 1.5.2 and 1.8.3, but none of those made any difference as far as connectivity or the rooting process is concerned. When I run Gingerbreak.exe, the Gingerbreak app never appears in the drawer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Edit: GladRoot resolved the rooting issue, but I'm still only connecting via Edge rather than HSDPA.

I'll go outside XDA but it's a great "How to" guide. I'd say first flash the 1.2.6 SBF and then do the OTA updates up to 1.8.3.
http://www.atrixforums.com/forum/mo...erything-up-date-atrix-thanks-d3athsd00r.html
I'll have to check it out and see. Previously when I flashed the 1.2.6 sbf, I tried to OTA for updating and all it found was the 1.5.7. Am I using an incompatible sbf file or something?

Not necessarily, follow the guide though as it has all the correct files. Once you do the first update & install it make sure to go in & manually check for updates, it will find the 1.8.3 then.
Any idea as to whether this would resolve the connectivity issue of only using Edge or would that be related to like a radio or something?
might go to settings/wireless & networks/mobile networks and check out select network. Make sure it is on 3g or auto...maybe

You should check that the proper APN's for your network are saved; can't help you with that though, you need to search the forums here..
P.S. Did you go into the phone info screen & change the "Preferred network type" to "GSM only"..?
I've looked at the APNs. HSPA looks to be pretty much empty other than the word phone and a few other miscellaneous settings. I'll try to flash that sbf file over lunch assuming I have time to download it.
I haven't checked in regards to the GSM setting though. I'll take a look at that.
Any ideas as to why Gingerbreak.exe isn't having any effect whatsoever? I have USB Debugging enabled and I've gone through the steps that I previously used. I haven't tried to push it to the device via adb, but I'm not sure as to why Gingerbreak.exe isn't working this time when it worked previously.
So, another issue I've run into is that when I tried to push the gingerbreak.apk file to the phone via adb it fails to connect to the phone. RSDLite has no issues with flashing sbf files, but adb just doesn't want anything to do with my phone.
You remount the SD card? or put it in mass storage mode?
So, I've gotten the device rooted thanks to some help from Ririal and GladRoot, but I'm still stuck with only Edge connectivity. I'm not sure what the issue is. I haven't really been able to find anything concrete in regards to APN information and thusfar nothing seems to be making any difference.

I will start off by apologizing for my ignorance, but I am new to rooting. I have had my Atrix for i guess a month or two now and I am wanting to root it. I just dont know where to start for rooting I've read that superoneclick isnt good to use and I tried aRoot but when i opened titanium backup it is saying it isnt rooted. Does anyone else have links to other threads helping with rooting or a Faq or tutorial on how to? Im not sure how to even get the files onto my phone and such and help will be greatly appreciated thank you all very much!
the superoneclick and aroot threads have all of the info you need to root your phone. if you cannot manage to do it by following the instructions already provided i really dont think you should be messing with your phone. they are basically one click solutions. i have tried both and they worked as described. you might want to go to youtube and watch videos of it being done

Good luck. Just make sure to use a short filename if you have problems with RSDLite. Some people aren't able to flash because of that. I was one of them but it flashed just fine.
Enable Wifi and enter your MotoBlur ID and you'll be able to go ahead and root on 1.2.6. Then you can check for updates and run the update. Use GladRoot as there's a rooting batch file, as well as another file to run after you upgrade. It also enables Sideloading (non-market apps) as well as tethering if you so wish.
If you can get ADB working then you won't have any trouble.

Hmmm well Im going to try and get this to flash back before i worry about rooting -_-
This is a fantastic guide, I highly recommend it:

Forgive me if this has been discussed already, but I couldn't find anything else about it.
Has anyone else found the actual option for installing applications from unknown sources within the Applications options in 1.8.3? I never had the option there before on 1.5.7, even after enabling sideloading via GladRoot. But after flashing the 1.8.3 SBF - there it is.
I had read that AT&T was going to find a way to allow the Amazon App Store to get installed, but I hadn't read anything about a general enabling of sideloading. I'm assuming it's because I installed sideloading after my fresh flash from the stock SBF via GladRoot.
I *kinda* used GladEnabler after gingerBreak. In short I did what the script did just in osx adb rather than clicking and forgetting.
And yes i see this is there now, but was it added by GladEnabler? I don't know, doubt it, it didn't add it before, right?
Anyone non-rooted see this?
imma go return my atrix to best buy to report on some issues for you all. youa ll can thank me later
ill check this out too.
gonna check on wake up lag. i believe its connected with root.
the app thing you just said. and some other things for myself.
you all dont think they will say anything if i dont unroot the phoen right?
For me, I did the following to get it:
1. Updated to 1.8.3 via sbf with RSDLite 5. (option was not available after this)
2. Rooted with GingerBreak. (option still not available)
3. Ran GladEnable. (option now there under Settings>Applications)
EDIT: Ok ive attempted again to have RSD read my phone, but this time from fastboot(i did not read this anywhere so i didnt know) but it still says its failing, even tho its connected. Any Help?
In constant searching, I have yet to really find an answer..If you know where I can go PLEASE just post the link and dont be a jerk. Phone was rooted with GingerBreak I used GladEnable to enable sideloading and the tethering APN. However I unrooted using the same method in attempts to avoid and troubles. It was nearly fully charged(90s). No other mods.
Afterwards:
-Ive tried to OTA update, and that failed
-Planned on trying to flash through RSD Lite 5.3.1, but it doesnt read my phone. My computer does just fine, but RSD doesnt display my phones info. I had the USB set to "None".
All I realy want to do is just root it after stock GB is on it. I dont really care/mind the BL unlocked or things like that. Id preferably install it through the computer because my WIFI at home is abysmal to say the least, so if anyone has the stock file, point me there and tell how best to install it. Please and thanks.
Hey, there seems to be a few of us(or maybe it's just me) confused about how we can root after the new update.
I just wanted to know if there was a confirmed safe way to restore root.
Thanks
Update:
Thanks to superkev. Manual way works. I can also confirm it also.
Also remember to keep your phone awake (ie. not in the locked screen)

I can't seem to find any root information on bell atrix 2.3.6 either.
saw some unconfirmed reports that superoneclick worked, but it doesn't work for me just sits at "Failed to set prot mask"
and then "WaitforDevice" forever...
if anyone has legit root info for the bell atrix 2.3.6 posting it would be greatly appreciated.
All I want is to install it! But im in usa so I need someone to make a fruitcake of it for me. Oh and I have also read super one click is supposedly working for some.

I've got super one click working but superuser keeps denying all my root permissions without giving me a prompt.
DANGER!
So I tried SuperOneClick 2.3.1 and got my Bell Atrix 2.3.6 rooted.... all seemed good and Root Checker told me I was rooted. Light Flow got Super User permission and I thought I was gold!
Then my phone started freezing up and rebooting. Now I can't use the phone because it is crashing every 30 seconds. I would say avoid SuperOneClick (at least this version) for now!!
Oh, and SuperOneClick won't unroot my device so I'm kind of stuck. I would rather not reset my device and have to reinstall all my apps (which are backed up with Titanium Back-up, but which of course needs root to work...).
I'm just trying GingerBreak to unroot so we'll see how that goes.....

... OK... so GingerBreak unrooted my phone but it is still completely hooped and the crashing woes continue... anyone with a solution on which system files I might be able to replace to fix this?!?!?
Aaaarrrg!
I tried wit Pete's first and it failed but super one click worked right from the first attempt. Before doing that though, I did a factory reset and started from scratch. Then I restored my apps only with TB. All is OK except that in market my apps list is empty with a message saying that my purchased apps will appear here. I have read that it is a known problem, but not necessarily with this update or because of rooting. In my experience super one click has otherwise been OK. Hope that helps. Don't have a solution for you except maybe trying to do a factory reset first if you are able to and then try again.

Hey thanks. Yes, I ended up having to do a reset from the boot menu (power+vol down) and do an 'Android Recovery' which apparently wipes the system files and reinstalls the OS. My TB backups are still sitting on the internal SD but I am hesitant to re-root so I can reinstall TB and restore... what build of SuperOneClick did you use?
I tried with SuperOneClick 2.3.1.0 (latest). It says that it worked, but even after rebooting, my apps are being denied root access.
UPDATE:
I tried the manual instructions from here: http://briefmobile.com/motorola-atrix-4g-root

I just updated to 2.3.6 and used the Briefmobile method to root and can also confirm that it is working. I had previously used this method to do 2.3.4 and had no issues on 2.3.6. Cheers
I might caution those who are not on AT&T about using the "manual" root method from BriefMobile. It was built with AT&T 2.3.4 files. Flashing the root.img in fastboot flashes those files to your /preinstall folder possibly hosing your Bell specific files. This has in the past, and possibly could in the future cause issues when trying to install future updates.
For those of you who have done it, can you look in /preinstall/md5 and see if you have att files?

this works flawlessly and on first attempt. so easy!
gingerbreak 1.2 didn't work this time, but it was useful to me for unrooting.
just make sure you do that before installing the update, and follow the superoneclick instructions.
too early to comment on battery life, and other than the keyboard I don't notice any aesthetic changes.

Remember to flash back the original preinstall image to avoid update issues.

That directory does contain some ATT and Cingular files. However, I used this method to root 2.3.4 and it didn't prevent me from installing the 2.3.6 update. I'm hoping I won't have any trouble going to ICS (fingers crossed that such a thing will even happen!)

Good deal. I had to help a few revert that folder when updating from 2.2.2 to 2.3.4 due to missing the gameloft stuff, but if it didn't effect your update that's good news.

that's weird. you definitely don't need internet access to perform the root (i was offline), provided you have superoneclick and phone drivers installed i'd say. does the driver check feature complain about it too?
Yeah, i thought it was strange too. It doesn't give me that error with the driver check, only when it is going through the install process of the exe.
Sometimes you need to treat your phone like a computer when it starts acting weird, save yourself some hassle and just do a format/factory reset and start fresh.
i used Doomlord's Rooting Toolkit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1319653 it worked in 30 sec
Link to the exact Superoneclick you used? I tried the Doomloader link but it's broken.
Ok, I know there are a lot of posts already on updating to 2.3.6 and root, but there appears to be a lot of different situations and limited information that is causing me some confusion.
So, what I want to do is get some clear details about probably the second most common situation: A Motorola Atrix 4G running the stock ROM with root access and an unlocked bootloader.
With regards to updating, aside from the obvious actions (i.e. TiBu, maybe a Nandroid), is there anything else that needs to be done to perform the update?
Additionally, I would like to keep root/unlocked even with the update, but I am willing to re-do root after the update. I can't find clear information on what methods work to keep root or to restore root after updating.
That is pretty much all that I am trying to do. I can not afford to brick my phone, so I want to make sure that I understand everything before I update.
P.S. Curse Motorola and it's stupid locked bootloaders!
I'm in the same shoes and looking to do the same thing...I want to keep root, not brick my phone...Apply the 141 update. I don't mind a little work (re-root, re-modify some files)
I'm running an unlocked bootloader, AT&T Atrix with 4.5.91 which is rooted with some custom changes (tethering, 2g/3g toggle, unlock APNs, agps)
Seems it could be possible to rebuild Blur_Version_91.4.5.141.MB860ATT.en.US available from Motorola and exclude the bootloader portions to keep the phone from bricking?

Yeah, I used the script that applied the tethering/hotspot tweak. That's about it. I haven't had to use any agps or anything, it's got amazing gps as it is.
Glad I'm not the only one though
If you have a stock rom unlocked bootloader with root don't do the ota update.I just soft bricked my phone.
Sadly, I did just that. I just wasn't paying attention.
Update: resorted to a factory reset. Now I have 2.3.6 running. Just going to take some time to restore my apps and settings.
Looks like I'm in the same boat. What's the best way to recover from a soft-brick in this situation?

Yeah, this is exactly why I have asked. I read at least one post somewhere where someone tried both the SD Card and the OTA update and the SD didn't work, but the 2nd OTA try did. I don't know if they said they had unlocked or not.

Well I found this threadhttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1498856 was trying the auto updater as suggested but my phone wont stay on long enough for it to work.It does the auto shutdown and tries re-installing the OTA update which gives me the android triangle guy.
I recently made an update of my Atrix 4G's System from 2.3.4 to 2.3.6.
My 2.3.4 version was unlocked and rooted. It is on ATT.
Initially I received a notification in my phone about the new System update available. I tried three times OTA, but each time the process failed. When it was booting up always gave me the Android Icon with an Exclamation mark inside of a triangle. But nothing else happens. My phone continued working but with the 2.3.4 version.
Then I went to this page:
Because I haven't less than 8 post in this site I can't post any URL.
But, go for the "Motorola software update" in the Motorola's web page or Google it and get it.
And installed the "Motorola Software update" application. I had to restart my PC in order to make the software to recognize and connect to my Atrix 4G. When the Atrix was connected, by USB port, I had to select the "Windows media Sync" in the USB connection options list to make the connection to work.
Then, all that I had to do was wait until the process got completed.
I hadn't see nothing different with the new update.
I conserved my "unlocked" condition but I lost my "Rooted" condition. But that is not a big issue, there are several thread in the web that help you to get rooted again.
Hope this can help, It works for me.

You have an unlocked bootloader? Or sim-unlocked phone?
I'm in the same situation of @cjfermin and the 2.3.6 was flashed without any problem.
Of course I've lost ROOT, but I've followed simple instructions on the web (using Fasboot) and I've re-rooted the Atrix in 3 minutes.
PS: my Atrix was/is sim-unlocked and with unlocked bootloader.

Ok, is your bootloader unlocked as well? I googled the "failed to boot 2 starting RSD mode" that you mentioned and there are a number of posts on it from over the years. It seems that you may need to flash a SBF file, but I don't know enough about your situation to competently tell you more than that.

I am on stock rom 2.3.4 and have only rooted my phone nothing else. It seems that because it was a rooted phone the update could not finish the process.
Now I don’t know what to do.
Should I try to flash to 2.3.4 using RDS lite and then update using OTA 4.5.141 or flash using 4.5.141 (I don’t know where to find it)?

If the only thing you've ever done to the phone is root then flashing the official 2.3.4 (not fruitcake) with RSDlite and then applying the 141 OTA update should be ok. Things to note:
1) Make sure the phone is fully charged
2) Apply the 141 OTA update from sd card. Go to motorola's website . I've had mixed results when applying previous updates when downloading over wifi.
3) Be VERY sure you've done nothing else to your phone other than root, i.e. unlock, mess with the bootloader and/or recovery (unlock, ROMs).

I don't have a SIM unlocked phone, so I can't with 100% certainty say you will be ok. You should be fine though. Maybe others with SIM unlocked phones will chime in.

I am not able to copy the update file to the SD card because I get a message saying “turning off” a little bit after the phone loads the sd card and then I get the "failed to boot 2 starting RSD mode" and after that the only way to take it out of that mode, it’s by removing the battery.
What options do I have now?
Thank you,
