[Q] No LED, So what are you using for your notifications? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Coming from Nexus One, track ball led notification and customization was one of my favorite features. I completely lack this in the SGS2.
What are you using as your main notification system?
Thanks

You can always use the application No led, free from the market.

Thank you. I just tried it. Seems to be working fine. Will monitor battery impact with the hungry SGS2.
Thanks again

As far as I know the battery doesn't get affected much. Just make sure you don't have the notification set to static, as doing that could cause pixel burn.

Love it. The answer was in the question!
This is a cool app. I was looking for something like this after coming from the Nokia N8 and it's on screen notifications. I particularly like the clock. Power consumption should be low with the super amoled screen i'm guessing?

[Q] Capacitive Keys as notifiers?

I am thinking about getting a vibrant and have been reading about a lack of notification LED. This isn't a deal breaker for me, but i was curious if there was a way to get the capacitive keys to blink to act as a notifier? Thank you for your time.

Or you can go to the market and download an app called NO LED. No led turns the Vibrant's screen into a notifier. Its a very cool and useful app. People are often amazed when they see my phone's screen light up with icons instead of the traditional notification led.

You can also download a kernel that allows you to enable backlight notification through Clockwork. For example, if you're on 2.2, you can flash one of Eugene373's kernels available here: http://eb-productions.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=samsungsgs&action=display&thread=28. This allows you to use the capacitative keys as a notifier. They will not blink, though; they just stay lit.
I honestly wouldn't recommend the capacitive keys as the notifier if they do not blink because it well eventually kill the battery and bulb/led. I personally recommend NO LED since it blinks and also the notifier/led icon jumps all across the screen instead of lighting up in one spot so it doesn't burn out the pixel/led. I hope I've made some sort of sense. Sometimes I can confuse others.

Thanks for the quick responses. I had seen NoLed only as a colored dot, but after looking up some more videos and what not, this looks like a great app, even better than a flashing light at the top corner of the phone. I will definitely picking up a vibrant or a nexus s within a couple weeks. Thank you

pretty much the only known way to use the capacitative keys to act as a notifier is flashing the ULF kernel or eugenes(im sure some of eugenes kernels are based off ULF). personally i wouldnt use ULF as it has poor coding and does corrupt RFS overtime. im waiting for supercurio to code a voodoo kernel that uses the button notifier as he seems like a more experienced dev and avid debugger

Superdim root required

Check out superdim (root), its in the market for free, it works amazingly well. I always noticed the atrix was particularly bright even at its lowest setting. I never *****ed because I was just happy to have a bright screen visible in daylight. Now we have best of both worlds.

Sweet! thanks
AdjBrightness works well too.
Nice, I will have to check these out. The blindingly bright "dim" setting was one of my pet peeves with the Atrix!
I have check it now, and it works like a charm, very low bright. excellent.

Sweet, this one works better even. It has a widget, and stays active even after screen off, and back on!

Thanks! I was actually just noticing that super dim didn't stay dark. What a great idea
Edit: I noticed that super dim actually darkens the screen while this new deal simply puts a dark patch over the screen. That's the difference between root and no root lol
Ps use both for super reading mode!

I've been using Elixir which does all sorts of stuff but one of the options is a tggle widget that lets you shuffle through up to 5 brightness settings. I use Auto, 5%, 12%, 40%, and 60%.

Well after playing with screen filter, I'm not crazy about it after all. It does nothing to the backlight but puts a grey tint to everything which makes it hard to read at the lower levels.
However, I've been emailing the author of superdim. He's already put out a version with the home screen profile shortcuts I asked for.. wish more devs were that responsive!

If you talk to him again tell him his app rocks and he's got the atrix communities thumbs up.
Side note I somehow got the dimness to stick through a screen off. Start at boot would be nice tho..

I actually just found him here. [APP] Superdim
It seems like the brightness after wake sticks as long as it's at 20 or above. It's like 20 equates to 0% in phone settings.
It's funny, most noticeable at 0. Hit the power button to shut the display off, and you notice it gets brighter before turning off.
Just tested this on my MT3GS, I can set it at 0 and it stays there. Even after a reboot.
[EDIT]
Working with the dev some more, I think he's got this fixed in the next beta! It restores the dim settings after wake! Stay tuned!
Seems to be fixed... my phones lowest is 30... very weird

LED notification light

Is it just me or does the led notification light seem very low? If the phone is laying down flat it's very hard to see if your not lookin at it directly is anyone else having this issue as well?

I consider it a feature..I can accidentally set my phone face up at night without a notification lighting up the whole room and waking me up. It's all in how you look at it I guess!
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
I agree that it's not very noticeable and I like being able to see it. One of the smaller issues I have to complain about right now though.
i agree, does not light up the whole room. My old EVO used to do that. uggg
I want to know when the light is going to work at least how it says in the manual
Okay thought it was only me. Yeah other than that I love this phone especially how fast it charges!
Yeah I thought the same thing when I first got my photon, I don't mind it though, and your right it does charge super fast,
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
Well, until you mentioned it.................Yes, its low unless I'm actually looking at the phone (and this likely saves battery?) BUT, as stated, I dont want my bedroom glowing when I'm sleeping either. Not like I would get up and actually check it anyway!

App for capacitive buttons ?

on old gingerbread phones without led notifications there used to be a kernel maybe Franco don't recall that had the ability to flash the capacitive buttons. That would be key on our G anyone know if its possible?
from my Nexus7 while my Optimus rests
Bln support. Built into kernel. Then the app will work
the best phone ever
Yes that was it I remember the app and the kernel dependency now if someone would do this lol
from my Nexus7 while my Optimus rests
Crazy enough there is an app that can do it. It's working on mine. You wouldn't expect it to work though but it does. The app if Light Flow. You have to enable the app to control the buttons light. It does work but seems to cause a full wakelock.

From my understanding that only Samsung phones can use bln. But on another note why would you want that when we have a very bright led on the power button?
Edit: while that would look clean with the front buttons for notification that would give some drain battery drain not worth it to me since we already have a led light for notification. While wouldn't be my first choice for the location, they should have done it like the sprint model.

Aside from the side location, the other issues with that notification light are 1) the fact that it only blinks ever 30 seconds or so, with no option to change the frequency, and 2) instead of an RGB LED, apparently LG only put a red one in, thus making it impossible to differentiate between different notifications.
If frequency can be fixed, I'd be happy. Otherwise, getting the capacitive buttons to each indicate a certain notification seems like a great alternative.

There would be so little battery drain you would never notice. Also, if you turn off the red led and only use the front capacitive leds the "drain" would be equaled out. I used BLN before and it is amazing. Would love to see it on the LGOG.

Well I notice it blink every 5-6 seconds for a minute or so. But in a dark or lit room I can see it just fine. Only thing I don't like that it on the side should have been on the front like the sprint model. And still don't see why they made the phone different anyway. Just glad the att model has the sd card slot

[APP] NoLED

As you all know, our LGOG doesn't really have any LED functionality. I really miss this as I had gotten super used to relying on it for info on my old Atrix. So I was browsing the general Android Apps section today and saw something that tries to help with this!

I am linking to the original post as I don't want to steal any credit, just wanted to post it since I didn't see it here and didn't want anyone to miss it!
I'm currently downloading it to try it and will report back. Give it a try!

It should only be used for Amoled screens. On Amoled screens black pixels are not lit up so battery usage is minimal (still a lot though). On our LCD screens the whole screen would light up, most likely killing our batteries in hours. I haven't actually tried that app but that's what I'm guessing would happen.

It's been brought up before in The Base thread a while back. You're right, the whole screen lights up. Quite a few wake locks. Not battery friendly. Personally, I would not recommend it. But give it a chance.
OP, there are a couple alternatives in this section, if you haven't already seen them, that are worth giving a shot, as well.

I didn't realize the AMOLED vs LED thing. But yeah i noticed it seemed pretty bright when I tried it. I ended up uninstalling it because I just didn't like how it looked.
