[Q] Anyone else having problems with low microphone volume? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

People complain that they have problem hearing me in a call. My friends, who also has a GSII, experiences the same thing. Anyone else? Is there an app that can adjust the mic-level?

Same problem here. I was talking in my regular volume to my girlfriend and she said she's having hard time hearing me.

I wonder if this could be an issue with the Scandinavian models? I see that you're located in Finland, and I am in Norway. I've searched both here and through Google, and haven't found any others saying they have experienced it.

Any solution to this?

Nope, didn't know GS2 had noise reduction. Where can you turn it off?

Hello hpe,
Indeed many people have this same problem, and should not be ignored since talking in the phone is the most important use of the phone. For me my volume is sooooooo low that it is nowhere near acceptable volume when increased to the max. I can't hear them, they cant hear me, its annoying.
here are three options might want to try:
A) Enter service mode by typing below code on your dialer :
*#*#197328640#*#*
click the following:
[5] AUDIO
[1] NB (VOICE CALL)
Choose Handset, headset, Speaker (which ever you want higher volume)
[1] VOLUME
[1] SRC Speech RX Volume
Change default values and higher the values any number of your choosing, here is an example:
[0]0_lvl : 68
[1]1_lvl : 72
[2]2_lvl : 76
[3]3_lvl : 80
[4]4_lvl : 84
[5]5_lvl : 88 Higher these values to until hear volume improvement.
Can also edit the values from:
[2]DST I2S1 TX Volume
[3]SRC I2S1 RX Volume: 100
[4]DST Speech TX Volume: 94
This is Samsung volume setting, worked for several people but sadly only worked 2 times for me and values keep resetting for me (doesn't mean for you, so give it a try) Also this is based on STOCK firmware.
B) the second thing you might to try is app called Volume+:
http://androidaudiohacks.com/home/volume-gingerbread/download
This app guarantees it higher the volume without the need of touching its default settings, BUT huge drawback it highers everything: Headset, speaker and Bluetooth EXCEPT HANDSET which is the most important :-(
(I also downloaded many volume increase apps, but Volume+ was the only one got the job done for everything but handset)
C) Lastly get GOOGLE VOICE app (create a GV account if you don't have one)
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.google.android.apps.googlevoice&feature=search_result
just by installing Google and logging on, every time you make a call, your calls get forwarded through Google voice and volume levels become acceptable in ALL HANDSET, HEADSET, SPEAKER, BLUETOOTH (just like phone should of have been) (this what i personally use fix my volume issues)
Hope one of these work for you.

try turning off the noise cancellation during a call, via the menu button i think.
FYI other threads posted say some people have this low mic issue as well. so youre not alone.

Wow, thanks all! So many great answers. I'll try to disable Noise Reduction, and if that doesn't work I'll try all the great suggestions you gave Extreme184X.

Tell us what worked for you, your solution might someone else with this problem.
Some people have the Galaxy S2 with screen protector that completely protects and covers the entire phone (front, back, sides) resulting in low volume because all mics and speakers are covered.

I can't believe this is still a problem with Samsungs. My wife and I both had Tocco's (don't laugh) and sent them back for this very reason. Now we've purchased GS2, delivery date 02/06/11 and i'm reading about this reoccurring issue.

I turned of noise cancelling, and have had no complaints so far.

Unfortunately it needs to be disabled for each call. Annoying.

Noise cancellation?

I read the SGS2 has noise cancellation?
Can anybody confirm if this uses the dual microphone approach as used in the Nexus and
some noise cancelling headsets?
If it does, I'm guessing there should be an additional microphone located away from the 'proper' microphone.
Thanks
D
Yes it does have noise cancellation. The second mic looks like it's at the top next to the headphone socket.
can anyone comment on the in-call quality with the noise canellation? the nexus s has very bad call audio in noisy environments. my nexus one call quality is superb with the second mic.
is the SGS2 very good in this regard?
He talks about call quality and it sounds very good.
youtube.com/watch?v=9UhSL7yaSCI
Does it also reduce non-stationary background noise ?
Is this noise cancelling mic used as one of the stereo mic's when recording video do you know?
Does anyone else's noise cancelling mic seem to turn itself off? Every time i make a call, the screen shows noise reduction off even though its enabled,i switch it back on but when i make a call again its off.
Can anyone see if this is the case on there S2 to see if its a fault or a bug. Thanks.

When do you see that message? Is it when the other end answers?
Cant say I have noticed it.
Does it only happen on speaker phone or BT headset?
It happens when the other person answers,a squiggly icon appears on the left. If u press the menu button you can select to turn it off or on.

As I previously said, are you using speaker or a headset?
Or is this just a regular call, ie you hold the phone to the side of your head?
Oh, and where are the settings for noise cancellation?
thanks
its just a regular call mate.

When your on a call press the menu button and the option to turn noise cancellation on/off is there.
I can confirm I get the same
If you've turned it on while on a call then disconnected that call and make another call is it still on or has it turned off again? Mine always switches off..
Yep thats what I get
Do you think thats a fault, its a bit annoying that you have to turn it on every time you make a call..
Unless the icon with the line through the sound wave actually means that its cancelling noise?

[Q] How to make incall voice loader through headphone?

Is there any way to make the incall voice louder through headphone as I notice a significant reduction in the volume in call compared to music go example.

Just for clarification, do you mean "louder" and "compared" ?
Either way I'm not sure, but replacing those makes the question make more sense to me
And if the above assumption is correct, I take it you have altered the volumes individually in settings and are still not happy (voice. media etc) ?
You got me right, I was using swype and I didn't review it.
I have checked the sound settings and it is on maximum, still incall quality is very bad.
I used swype to write this post though.

quality or volume?
I have experienced quality issues, but I put it down to network signal.
Hi
I have got exactly the same issue ; no issue to call using the handset (i do not know how to describe it in english) but as soon as I swith to headset, the volume is very low and I can not hear the caller while hearing music, app sounds,... no problem

OK, when in a call, and you push up-volume, does this alter the in-call-headset-volume?
Not tried it, just guessing
No, it says the volume is at maximum

Maybe try with NON-Microphone headset then and see if it's any different. I take it your using stock headphones?
Just a theory but maybe there is a problem with the power flow when it enables the 3rd jack socked band for using the microphone.

[Q] Permanent solution to too low In-call volume on headset

Hi,
I'm on Galaxy S2; Android 2.3.3; KE7.
When using headphones on my device the volume is great for music, videos, youtube, and even skype. However for some reason it's only around half of that level when calling (even tough the volume is set to maximum).
I've done some google research and found out that it's quite a common issue with this phone. A workaround has been found by using some codes. However, it is not a permanent solution.
I've found a post which says that someone had called Samsung and they acknowledged the issue and will send them a new phone where this issue has been fixed.
1) Has anyone found a permanent solution to increasing the volume of the call when on headset?
2) I've also found a post where someone says that apparently Samsung will fix this issue in Android 2.3.4. Can you confirm this? When will this be available? If it's longer than 1-2 weeks I will have to send my phone for a refund/exchange (although I love it).
Your advice on the above is much appreciated.
Hi, I've done some further research and I think I've found the solution:
First make sure that your sound is on (as you can't access the volume settings in the silent mode) -> press the Menu button -> Settings -> Sound -> Volume -> and then increase the 'Incoming call' volume.
I've just tested the call volume when on headset and it has been increased to a more that enough level. Great. My love to this phone is growing
Now I have to figure out how to disable the camera shutter sound....but that's a question for another post...
It seems that the solution above worked for some time but now my phone started to deliver very low call volume when on headphones. Maybe it's due to the Android update, I don't know.
However I found that the issue is related to the media volume. For example when I listen to music and turn the volume low then this affects the incoming call volume and it becomes low as well.
The solution to this problem seems to be: make sure that the music volume is max before you want to make a call. I've just tested it an is seems to do the trick.
It would be great to hear to another solutions to this problem for unrooted phones.
Heard this app works well,

Regards.

[Q] Voice echo?

Hi,
I've been having complaints on the other end of people hearing their own voice echo during calls. It seems to stop if I put it on speaker or lower the in call volume.
Any thoughts/solutions?
I'm currently running rooted stock on T-mobile.
My wife said she heard herself when I called her over the aux in my car. Didn't have that issue with my mt4g. The volume in the car was the same as always, maybe the phone volume needs to be changed.
Ill report back when I play around.

I just flashed stock w/ Odin and left it unrooted - the problem seems to have stopped for the moment. I'm hoping it's related to network service and not hardware/software issues associated with rooting.
They're just messin' wit' you...cause they're jealous!
problem came back - only was able to stop it by turning off noise reduction on the in call menu.
it seems that it was actually caused by me inadvertently activating the noise reduction feature. after deactivating it, it stays off by default and I no longer have the echo issue.

Thanls ill give this a shot. It'd be nice if it auto-disabled when in car mode.

I don't know if it was this yet but my caller volume got pretty low after I did this, can't confirm yet. And yes call volume was all the way

[Q] Record/microphone problems (?)

Hi! I bought a Moto E dual sim from France. I have no problem with calls, but my records (with WhatsApp or specific apps) have a very low audio, compared with other devices. It's weird! When I call someone, he hears perfectly
Is it a hardware/software issue? Is it normal? Do I have to send it back to the shop and change it? Thank you all!
Hey buddy, I also use the record function extensively, didn't happen to me yet. Can you just pop over to Settings>Sound>Volumes and check the volume levels there. If it is at proper levels. If thats not the problem, you may want to do some tests.
Go to dialler and type *#*#2486#*#*
Click on 'Start CQA Test in Menu Mode'
Go to Audio and and do all the tests.
If all are working fine, and you still have that problem, its the time to call the customer service.

Thank you. I did the tests with volume settings to the max.
Ear speaker: with "Buzz test" the audio is low, with "Play Harvard speech pattern" audio is veeeery low (I can't understand what I hear)!
Loudspeaker: this is very good.
Mic Loopback: First time, no feedback here. I try choosing some options but I can't hear anything, and sometimes (e.g. with "Primary Mic low power") I have a crash of CQA test.
Second time, I try choosing "default mic" and blowing into the microphone, I can hear a "swish" but the audio is still low (if I talk into the microphone I can't hear anything, maybe it's too low). Same with "primary mic". Finally, I hear a "cryptic" sound with "camcorder mic".
EDIT: when I launched CQA test for the first time, it didn't open. I only saw a frame that shows the CQA test, then it quickly closed. I had to reboot.
Hmm..if that's the case I think the hardware is definitely faulty. Contact the customer support. I hope they replace your device or at-least fix the problem. Good luck!
