Hi guys,
First off, I'm a total newbie to custom ROMs, root etc - so whilst I'm considering following ChainFire's directions to install CWM, it makes me nervous... I did read all 20 pages of the thread, but am still left wondering about a few things:
1) Once installed, is that it? Have I voided my warranty? It states that you can still update firmware or re-install stock ROM, but I got the impression that it left a trace behind which Samsung could find. Is this correct?
2) Presumably before attempting this, I should completely back up my phone. But how? I can copy files from readable SD card (int & ext), but what about the 'hidden' parts of my phone?
3) Finally, how risky is this? I have been tempted to root for ages now (had an HTC Magic, then N1), but just felt my complete lack of knowledge (have been using Android for 2 years now and regularly read tech sites, but more from a user POV rather than dev) has kept me from attempting it. I know, bravery is the key! But is it really worth me trying it if I'm that lost in the world of dev-speak...???
In advance, I really would like to thank anyone who can spare me their time to help me through this...! I feel so out of my depth, yet am actually really comfortable with Android (since cupcake), so feel as though I should be able to get more from the OS.
Once again, thanks.

Hi all, as you can tell by the title, I am a newbie to not only this site but also to Android & Linux too!
A little bit of a bio on what I've done so far (a bit long so please bear with me!)
I've had my HTC Desire (about 6 different handsets at last count) for just over a month, and as I have problems with the standard Orange HTC software, I read up and successfully rooted my handset, since this I have had no problems with the handset what so ever, and wont ever go back to Orange based software!
Now I have read up about 'cooking' my own ROM's, and spent some time on android.modaco.com, but I dont have the spare cash to pay for the online kitchen, and with a lot of research I stumbled upon this site (great site & info by the way!!!) so I followed the post on how to set up Ubuntu in VirtualBox (until the Java error and it needing root access or something) but anyway, I then saw the post about Cygwin and how to set up the kitchen and I did 'cook' a ROM, it was bassed on Pirate Rum's Android 2.2 ROM, so I run this through and added a few extra's but when it was burnt onto my handset and it rebooted, it did not work, the screen came up as normal, but I think I left out a launcher as I couldnt get to a home screen, no problem I thought so I then downloaded the 'PB99IMG_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.zip' ROM from the list of sites in the post about Cygwin, and precoded to modify this to my liking, also adding the Apps2SD package, all seemed to go well until the install was complete and it just got stuck in the loop of rebooting, getting the white HTC screen with the annoying tone and rebooting again.
It was like when I first rooted my handset and didnt partition the SD card & set it up per the guide on how to partition the card (512MB EXT2, the rest FAT32) etc... but anyway, I couldnt recover the handset properly, so I had to do the rooting procedure all over again, with goldcard, then set up Apps2SD, partition SD card before I could install ROM Manager to restore my phone to fully working order!
Please can you help a noob to be able to successfully 'cook' and burn my own ROM onto my handset please, as I am really eager to complete this so I can add new skills to my repertoire
Thanks in advance for your patience, help & advice and again, sorry for the mammoth post!
TIA, Arty.
Hi Arty,
Welcome to xda-developers. It seems you've already read up alot on android. Still I would advice you to read the top sticky posts, as they contain ALOT of useful info on "cooking" and android rom.
Oh, and try to refrain from creating new topics with every question you have. I know this is your first, but I'm just making sure you're going to be a good member.
Advice needed!
Thanks for the welcome NeoS2007!
I have managed to custom a few ROMS, but these have been ROMS that others have cooked and I would like a blank canvas so to speak!
The other day I did download a stock Android 2.2 ROM, but I think it was for the N1 or something because after waiting ALL FLIPPING DAY for it to download(guess the guys site speed was really pants) I flashed it onto my Desire but it didnt work, just was stuck on the white HTC screen for about half hour before I accepted it would not work!
I have also tried to use different boot animations (how DO you make these yourself?) made by others and use that on a ROM I have been fond of, but that dont work either
Also, how is it possible to make your own backdrop wallpapers for Android to add to your cooked ROM?
In short, the topics I need help with are:
*** Where to get an un-modded Android 2.2 ROM from that works on the Desire?
*** How to make your own custom boot animations?
*** How to make & add your own wallpaper to add to your cooked ROM?
Thanks in advance for your help, time & replies, I hope I can get the answers to the questions I have asked here!
Arty.
hi, i am new on the forum so hello to everyone. I joined as i have recently been given a Viewpad7 as a present. i only wanted a 7 inch tablet and didnt have the funds for an ipad/transformer etc, they were a bit on the large size.
i have read a bit about the device and have had a chance at trying it out at one of our local shops. it certainly was a lot faster and more sturdy that the storage options 7" device.
i may be interested in rooting the device and have read up a bit about it on various threads on this forum. i get 50% of what is being said but 50% goes over my head at the moment.
i have an htc android phone and one of the things that is really frustrating is the fact that the memory fills so quickly if you add too many apps. i have been told rooting a device will allow more apps as it allows install to the disc rather than the internal memory...i am presuming this will be the same for a tablet allbeit most have a larger internal memory??
i have heard that the android 2.2 is not great with tablets as it is designed really for the moblie phone? is this the case for the viewpad?
i am presuming that a rooted tablet can use slightly amended operating systems with some tweaks?
can anyone tell me what other benefits there are...
Gingerbreak sounds a good one from what i have read as it is based on the android 3 software...
if there isnt a need to root it i will carry on as is but if there are a lot of benefits i might as well root it when i first get it before i load anything onto it...i will have to learn some of the jargon like 'adb shell' to make sure i dont end up with a brick.....what are the risks in rooting and how often do things not turn out better?
sorry for all the questions....
atb
forgot to ask is there a youtube guide to rooting where i could watch someone going through the stages etc
Hi
Here is the link to video guide for rooting viewpad 7 (or variant like mine - commtiva lynx n700): http://www.techofweb.com/technology/root-viewsonic-viewpad-7-superoneclick.html
With rooted system you can actually do a lot of tweaks like flashing altered core, which will give you possibility to overclock a bit, it will also give the ability to install applications which can require root like Titanium Backup (total backup of all applications, their settings and data) and others.
With rooted device you can also change how your desktop looks, changing even notification icons or dialogue windows or buttons.
Then as you mentioned rooting opens a way to use cores which allows you to store applications, data and java machine cache to a partition on SD card (ext2, 3 or 4) and this will give you a way to install lot more apps than on non rooted tablet.
I can see a lot of benefits in rooting tablet, I have done it 2 days after purchasing n700. Installing new roms will not always give you a stable, fast working tablet, there are reboots sometimes for no apparent reason, there is sometimes a lot of fun flashing another rom and restoring all your apps and data and rearranging desktop to how is was.
What are the risks - if you start wisely and flash proper recovery first and do a system backup first - chances to brick your device permanently are slim. But if you start flashing a device with a new rom right away - you may end up with a non working device and a need to find a stock rom. Because before you can flash rom you must flash recovery, which gives you the ability to flash a rom designed for your device. I haven't read of anyone who bricked tablet when trying to root it.
I've heard about some stack with non working rom (boot loop) and asking for stock one. But there is always a way to flash non altered rom for your device (after flashing recovery which is kind of application like bios but without all those options to change device settings).
But behind all this, which is for altered pads lovers just a fun - you will have a device which is far more functional then the stock one.
Have fun

hi...i think i will root it at least, but not sure if i will bother with any of the roms. doesnt look like there are many available for this tablet, although i may be looking in the wrong places...
atb
rooted it...use the one click but it wouldnt do it with the latest so i used one of the older versions and it did it...
now...now that it is rooted can i get rid of any of the clutter like the stock browser and any of the other stuff i wont use as i will download other apps??
will titanium backup copy the whole system for me, i have seen a post about backing up the viewpad but it was using the command prompt and i am not confident doing this...what is the easiest way of doing a full backup in case i brick it??
atb
another question i have is will rooting the pad now mean that i can save more apps onto it...it is showing about 80mb of space left at the moment...if so how do i get it to save everything to my sd card?
atb
Another point....now i am getting into this device. i have copied some of my films onto disc to put in this... some mp4 some h.264 [i think] files both with mp3 audio but the player on the viewpad just says it cant play them...it hasnt opened any video files yet!!!!
atb
nothing seems to be working here...i have emailed viewsonic support and have now been told this unit only supports 3GP playback????????
atb
Install a better video player app, I use rockplayer myself to play avi files.
Further I would recommend you search and read the forums, there is a lot of info to be found and most of your questions will already have been answered in the past.
have now tried rockplayer but still no joy. it will play small files up to 70mb but anything bigger seems to bring the sorry cannot play video warning... have tried altering some of the settings in the 3GP format but still no joy. have also noticed it wont paly any of the youtube videos through the app at HQ, but it will play them all at a lower quality...really did want this to hold films to play on the move but as yet cannot seem to get them to play no matter which palyer... not sure if it may be a problem with the unit?
will do some more reading!!

Greetings Everyone,
First-off, a little about myself:
I'm pretty familiar with the world of rooting/hacking/exploiting devices on multiple platforms, such as:
1. - Android (Rooting/Hacking/Custom Recovery, Kernals, Nandroids, Custom ROMs, etc.)
2. - Palm/HP WebOS (Developer Mode/WOSQI/PreWare/Custom Kernals/Patching/Themes, etc.)
3. - Blackberry (BBSAK/Vendor-Independent Custom OS/CODs/Themes, etc.)
4. - iPhone Jail-breaking (tethered/untethered) cydia apps, installous, etc.)
5. - HomeBrew/Exploiting of non-phone devices (Nintendo WII, Nintendo DS/I, Sony PSP), hell, even uncapping Motorola Surfboard Modems back in the day!
That all said, I'm pretty familiar with the whole scene. So although I'm no expert...I'm also not a complete n00b.
...except for Tablets, like the Nook Tablet!!! I'm still pretty much a n00b when it comes to tablets. I did assist a friend of mine in rooting here Viewsonic G-Tab a few months ago, but that's about it.
I just bought my son a Nook Tablet for Christmas and like all of the other devices, it's ready to be hacked.
With that said, I have all of the common questions that many first-timers do on the Nook Tablet, with the added experience that I can draw from.
So that said, can someone give me a 'quick n' dirty' breakdown or summary on where we are at today with the Nook Tablet in terms of rooting/hacking/exploits? Such points would include:
1. - Rooting; Are there multiple utilities out there, or is it all done through ADB?
2. - Custom Recovery: How many types of Custom Recovery choices are there for the Nook Tablet? My personal favorite is Xionia Clockwork.
3. - Custom ROMs: Are there tons of choices or only a few to choose from? Which ones are recommended? Which ones should I avoid?
4. - OTA Updates/Firmware Updates: As of right now, we have not even ran any system updates, because I wanted to make sure that I knew what I needed to before hand, to avoid risking any potential updates that could nuke my ability to root. So that said, is there a set of update versions that are more compatible than others? Should I update the Nook Tablet right away or should I avoid OTA updates like the plague? Is there an OTA update that could nuke my ability to root or load Custom ROMs?
5. - Will Android ICS become available for the Nook Tablet?
6. - What about the wonderful world of OverClocking?
7. - Any other helpful tips that will get me started on the right track??
Thank you all!!!
BiggJoe
Right now we have root through adb and scripts but a locked bootloader. Read the developers section for more info or use search
Ok, got it. What about OTA updates? Should I update, avoid updating, does it matter?
I'm pretty new to rooting as well. I've been trying to read everything i can at the forums every night to stay on top of it. So far what I've learned is this:
1. You want to root your nook Tablet (I've only used Indirect's method so far)
2. Block OTA's (Indirect has a link on how to do it at the top of his rooting)
If you don't block OTA's you will be forced to reset your device back to 1.4.0 just to root it later.
There are a few new posts on other rooting options, but I haven't tried them yet.

You don't want the update (1.4.0 to 1.4.1). Look in the development forum for blocking methods.
Ok, this is awesome info. So we can at leat r00t for now and I need to make sure to block OTAs...since v.1.4.0 is where I need to stay at.
We'll have to do something about the locked bootloader at some point then.
sweet.
In addition to 'Indirect', who else is pretty active in Nook Tablet development and exploits?

Hi All,
New user, and so far browsing has returned a lot of interesting threads, hopefully I can make myself at home here soon!
In the interim, I am looking for some assistance on rooting. I have heard a bit about it and the first thing that comes from it is "it invalidates your warranty", many questions such as "does this include software, and hardware" or "just software"...
Anyway, the main question I came to ask!
I am looking at potentially rooting my Galaxy Y, as it is very limited in local storage space, and I am looking to "extend" the phone memory into a partition on the SD (or just use the SD solely where possible), however, I have seen a few things on rooting, but so far I have yet to see a means by which you can "ghost" or take an "image" of your phone before rooting it, so that you can revert to this image in the event of disaster?
1) Is it possible to do this, or can you only use other ROM images?
2) what are the disadvantages to rooting your phone?
3) would "unrooting" your phone result in warranty being restored, or is it a case of 'once the phone has seen sight of rooting, its done for!'?
Many Thanks, and I look forward to many future postings!
Hi,
noobie here,
have not rooted or rebooted any android devices
have had my TF201 Prime Transformer for aprox 15 months, (aust)
ww_ epad build. now 10.2.18
recently updated from ics to JB 4.1.1 via oto., have since had a growing number of issues, problems and general malaise.
No help from Asus.
Asus have what they call a bootloader ( but i believe it just gives root access from what ive gleaned from forums} in gheir download files section
for TF201 4.1.1 only,
If you download and use you lose all access to warranty and asus support. MY prime is already out of warranty so no big deal accept for future oto upgrades.
As many steps I have seen here are possibly outdated or work for ICS only could some one confirm some correct steps to take...
note. my external SD card slot doe not work, it kept ejecting the card and i thimk late one night i jammed it back in the wrong way!!
therefore steps to backup or run from external SD card willnot work for me.
I have also seen not to do things with consul attached, therefore usb port not available,
ok,
1. run asus bootlocker/root access? or not
Is there a fairly straightforward tool now to root TF201 on JB 4.1.1 that would be a better choice?
Once I have root access,
I guess titanium backup and probably factory reboot to get back to a clean system.
Then should i keep the oto ww_eepad 10.18.2 and run some apps that will tweak and reduce bloat?
or as i have no warranty anyway whar are the best bootloader os's outthere that will run a purer android 4.2 while maintaining Asus hardware functions and add somr smoother functionality, , Glad to get rid of Asus sw apps,
but I do love this tablet and don't want to destroy it.
I've seen several different builds but they all come with warnings that some things may not work....
can someone please advise the apps i should run and the order to it,
without ext. sd card!
any assistance or direction to resources will be greatly appreciated as what was a great tablet is now a bit of a dog!
and I cant afford to get a new one......
Plus when I bought this it was the best on market and i paid nearly twice a much for it for what you can now get a TF7000,
feeling both ripped off let down and emotionally attached.. would love to turn it into a killer machine again!
thanks

Hi Stuart
From this post your knowledge seems a bit limited and with no working SD slot you would really need acquire a fair bit of expertise to be able to install custom ROMs.
So why not just use the latest root method and tweaks to get your Prime zinging. Removing bloatware and installing mods like browser2ram etc really make a big difference and it does not involve unlocking the bootloader.
If you follow the instructions in this thread it is also a pretty safe method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2230779
Be sure to ask in the thread if there is something you don't understand :good:.
