I'm exhausted from all my attempts at figuring out these problems, so I'm hoping someone on XDA can help me figure out two issues I'm having with my GSII.
I have the South Korea version of the GSII and I'm using it in Hong Kong. I can receive SMS messages, but when I try to send an SMS reply it says failed. I checked the SMS message center number and it's correct for the carrier. Here's the odd thing, when I try to compose a new message or forward a message, I have the option to specify the senders number. If I manually type in my number and the receivers number, I can send the SMS without a problem. So I know it's not a frequency compatibility issue. I can't manually specify the numbers every single time as the SMS messages will take forever to compose. I switched the SIM card over from an older Android phone and that phone had no issues with sending SMS messages. In the about phone section of the settings, my number appears as unknown. I never had a problem with this in my old phone. I did try to edit my number on the SIM through a couple old phones, but it just wont save. If I switch SIM cards from different carriers, I'm always going to have this SMS sending issue. Are there any tricks or ways to fix this?
The other problem I have is with the dialer. Everytime I try to make a call, a roaming call option pops up that says, call Korea or call international number. I have to select call international number to dial out. Is there a way to stop this?
If I could fix these two issues my GSII would be perfect since everything else is awesome except the two basic functions, sms and calling, of a phone. This has driven me nuts for hours everyday trying to figure it out. Thanks!
Are you in South Korea? I remember reading somewhere that the Korean wireless companies have a totally different SMS/MMS protocol than the rest of the world. We've all been getting our phones from the UK because of this even though it launched in Korea first. Maybe someone online that's familiar with the Korean SGS2s differences can provide more detail.
I thought that might be the issue with the SMS/MMS system in South Korea, but if I specify the sender and receiver numbers the messages will go through without a problem and I can also receive without any problems.

I fixed the SMS problem using an iphone 3gs which takes the same size sim card as the GS II and saving my number to the sim card. This isn't really a good solution sinve Im not always going to have a 3gs handy when I travel and would like to use a local sim card. I still haven't figured out how to fix the Roaming Auto Dial window that pops up everytime I try to make a call. I can't figure out how to make the phone understand I'm not roaming.
This is what I mean:

Yesterday i get an MMS from my gf. I have the threaded palm app, on the old 1.35 cing rom the stand mms (m$ messaging) handled my MMS. However the threaded app said it couldn't be downloaded. SO i tried playing with the setting in the app to no avail. Then set them back, and now non of my messages would send. So i was like well lets take the wm6 plunge. I did it and none of my messages would send, so went back to 2.06 and it won;t send my messages either. Any ideas? I am going to try my sim on another phone, and try to call cingular but I am all outta ideas.
Thanks

How long has it been since the error first appeared??
Also are you CERTAIN the mms settings are correct?
Theres several problems that might cause this, could be your GPRS/3G connection not working correctly (wrong DNS settings etc..) or your service provider may be experiencing technicall difficulties?!
about 24 hours.
I doubt the mms setting are correct. but I have reflashed ROMS. I am going to try to load the cingular ext rom into the wm6 rom to seee what happens. Then I am gonna try to swap sims or phones.

Firstly CONFIRM the mms and gprs settings, get them written down. Dont bother with the extrom Ive never used them (HTC TyTN but im on O2-UK so nothing of use) and just manually create the connection and profile for mms/gprs. Send a test MMS (send it to an email address) and see if it works.
If this works you are looking at an issue with your settings in the other MMS program. Have you used a back-up program to save things?? Because the general concensus is to not use them as they dont always restore correctly...and it even less likely to work when restoring things into WM6 that originated in WM5 :s
MY GPRS Setting are correct. I really could careless about MMS. I really just want sms to work.

Ah i see, so its SMS aswell as mms that isnt working? Can you tell me what the service centre is set to in your device (it should set it automatically from the SIM card).
(tap the signal indicator icon, tap settings from the balloon that appears.....tap the services tab, highlight "Voice Mail and Text Messages" then tap "get settings"......the service centre numbers for sms and voicemail should appear after a second or two)
MRVANX...You suspicions were right. I changed the number. So think the threaded app must have made the change to the registry when I was playing around with the setting, and for some reason that change was either saved to my sim....? or maybe to the registry.
MRvanx---thanks for reminding me where these setting were. still odd though. i can't wait for the true wmx.2 to be out.

Registry sir, the service centre and voicemail settings are returned by the network when the "get settings" button is pressed...thats why you never have to manually enter the numbers. So its working ok now??
It is working now...but odd.
Anyone have success configuring google voice using the google voice app? When i login into google voice app and then say configure the app force closes.
I also don't see Voicemail settings under settings so that i can change my voicemail number from att to google voice.
Any ideas?

The weird thing is that I can't find the voicemail settings on this phone :-(

I am having the same problem...
The settings are located under the dialer and I was able to set GV as my voicemail.
Inbound calls work fine.
Outbound....
This has been a bit frustrating. If I set "Use Google Voice To Make All Calls" under GV settings and then try and make a call it does not do anything. Not even an error (although I assume there is one occurring)
However if I change it to "ask Me every time" then I am able to make outbound calls with my GV number.
I tried other dialers and have had the same experience.
Will keep experimenting for now

Cool. Any luck with using GV for all calls? This is the first phone I have had trouble getting GV working properly.
Hi,
I've been experiencing the exact same issue and found this thread- am using Omega 5.0 but it sounds like it's a rom independent issue.
Have you made any progress? I am also only able to call if I select "ask each time".
I'm having the same issue. I just flashed to the latest LF2 firmware and it's still happening. With the number of Galaxy S3s sold, I'm surprised that more people aren't complaining about this.
Even when I have the app set to "Ask me every time.." the call is still placed with my carrier number. It's a pain in the butt because now people think that I've changed my number and are starting to text my carrier number.
I had no issues with my S2 (Gingerbread or ICS)
My only suggestion is to post a review in the Market explaining this problem. If you see another review that is also having a problem, mark it as helpful.
EDIT: I tried this and it appears to be working!

OK, did a little more testing - and stumbled across something looks like only 7 digit dialing is affected. 10 digit dialing does indeed use google voice. Frankly, I'm not sure if this was the case in stock GB or not - with out a way to roll back, I can't test.

Well I am still struggling with this one.
I do not think it is a GV + ICS issue because it worked fine on the HTC One X for the two whole weeks I had one.
I feel that it is more likely and issue between the GS3 ROM and GV but I have no idea how to make Samsung aware of it. Especially since GV is only in the US and the phone is international.
I have the Sprint version coming in this week hopefully and I will be able to find some things out.
For now if you have not tried it, I highly recommend checking out GrooVe IP. It works really well I was quite surprised.
Yes, I think it is actually a long standing issue with 7 digit numbers, however it isn't working for me with 10 digit numbers either! Except strangely, if I type a random garbage number it will work, but not work on my existing contact numbers- I've even tried to delete the contact and phone manually and no luck either... do you mind telling me which rom you're using?
I think you two are correct. ICS isn't the problem, it's the GS3 firmware. My Galaxy S2 was running ICS and GV with no problems. And to clarify, with the i9300, we seem to be having two issues:
1. Some people are unable to configure GV for voicemail and,
2. Many of us are unable to make outbound calls using GV
For the first issue, I have had luck by either a) skipping the voicemail portion of the setup and adding voicemail settings manually or b) Installing a backup of GV from my GS2 using Titanium Backup
For the outbound calling issue, I think I fixed it by using the Country code + 10 digit number. So, I guess "11" digit dialing might be a better description for us USA owners.
312-555-1212 FAILS but 1-312-555-1212 is working for me.
Give that a try?

It's actually an issue with the Google Voice app and the SGS3 Dialer. It used to be that when you configure the Voice mail, it brings up the Phone configuration page in the settings, where you could set it, but in SGS3, the GV app can't bring it up, so you will need to do it manually.
Go into the Dialer and click on the Menu Button, go into Call settings, and there you can configure your Voicemail setting.

I tried to add a 1 or a +1 prefix but still no go. To give more description to the bug, if I reboot the phone, and under "always use GV", the first time I dial, it will create a "call not sent" prompt, but the call will actually go through via GV and function correctly. The second time however, it just fails to respond without any prompt.
Edit: I'm on ZNLE9, XXALF2 built.

I have no problems with 10 digits if I use the "ask me everytime" option- I'm only trying to figure out how to get it working under "use GV everytime". So it's just a bit tedious atm but not gamebreaking I guess.

Yes. Same problem here.
I have also found that if I just dial a random number that I have not called before that it will actually work the FIRST time and fail every time after.
Just use youmail. It works great and not a pita to set uo

Me too...
I'm also running into the "Make all calls" issue. "Ask every time" works perfectly.
I recall a few MIUI roms where out-of-the-box, the dialer app did not allow any third party access and this same issue would happen until you dug around in the call settings to allow access to other apps. Again, the "Ask every time" option worked, but "Make all calls" didn't until that setting was changed.
So, I'm assuming it is indeed an issue with the stock SGS3 rom's dialer application, for the GT-I9300 at least. Hopefully a fix will come soon.
I'm curious to see if "Make all calls" works after flashing a CM9 nightly. Trouble is, I just got this thing and wanna play around for a while before I root it.
I can confirm the same issue, as well. "Ask me everytime" works, but "Use for all calls" doesn't. This is on stock and Omega 5.0 roms.
Has anyone tried CM9 nightly to see if this issue goes away or any other suggestions?
I tried finding an answer but couldn't pinpoint the issue. When wifi is turned on, my SMS/MMS messages are hit or miss as far as sending/receiving.
I have tried different ROMs. I usually do full wipes/installs whenever installing new ROMs. Will usually see the issue regardless.
Anyone know of a fix?...due to the lack of threads I'm scared I am a rare case.
Thanks.
-Jeff
When on wifi you should be able to send and receive SMS like usual. Phone calls work too. Why? Because wifi mode makes your phone act like a phone not a smartphone.
On wifi MMS, email and web because they use your router to access the carrier portal. That is what the APN setting is for.
So the answer is it should be the same on or off.
Thank you.
I do understand it 'should' be working, receiving SMS/MMS while Wifi is on...
Do you use juicedefender ? Noticed with the profile I had set up it wouldn't download mms on wifi because it turned data off
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
No I'm not sure what juicedefender is...
I can replicate this problem on a brand new ICS rom with no personal apps installed. Currently I'm on the new Collective RC1 but the problem isn't the ROM, it seems.
Just to be sure - you do have cell service when you're hooked to the router, correct?
MMS and text messages still go out through the cellular network, even if you're hooked to wifi - no cell service = no messaging (or phone calls either).
If it's working properly you should see the E or 4G symbol come on when you send an MMS message, even if you're hooked to WIFi - example

^^ I will check as soon as I get home later, good question.
Fyi, my wifi is on right now (not connected to any wifi) and an mms message has sat in 'sending' status for about 10 minutes now. Internet works fine, go figure.
Check your APN. they second half deals with mms.
I have 2 notes. One rooted but stock and the other fully stock. Wifi on/off, 4g displaying, etc... My sms's are hit n miss too. Haven't changed APN. if I resend, it usually goes.

I'll look around for the APN settings here...thank you.
I checked the APN settings and they are identical to other APN settings I found.
It seems, to me, the issue is somehow wifi related. As if my Note is forgetting carrier radio while wifi is on.
Anyone else?
Is packet data selected? It's a wireless setting?
No idea how I'd select packet data
On wifi with cellular on you can get everything but MMS.
You need cellular DATA to send and receive those.
Wifi will get all your other data (web, email, etc).
Cellular will get you SMS
Cellular data is needed for MMS

I understand this. My issue is when wifi is switched 'on' I mostly cannot receive MMS and sometimes cannot receive SMS. This is regardless if wifi is connected to a source or not. I do not turn off cellular data.
There aren't any settings, that I have seen, to fix this. Is my Note defective?...or is it because I'm using cooked ROMs? Yes, I follow the directions fully when using a new ROM.
My wifes MyTouch Slide acted like this back in the day. Was a real PITA.
Anyone owning the Gear S having an issue with the watch sending text message from either the watch number or your cell phone number depending on the method you create the message on the watch? Or better have a solution to fix it?
IE;
While no longer bluetoothed to my cell phone (but with call FWD turned on) If I swipe down go to messages and create a message the receiving person gets a text message from the CELL phone number. However if I then use the S-Voice feature to text the same person they receive a text message from the WATCH phone number. If I get a text message from someone that was FWDed to my watch from my phone and respond to it they get a text message from the CELL phone number. However if I get a phone call from someone FEDed to my watch and hit end then select a quick response to the person they get a text message from the WATCH phone number. If I were to go back into messages and respond to the same thread of message it continues to text the person from the WATCH phone number. I have to create a new message in the messages section in order to make it go back to the CELL PHONE number.

YEah, that's pretty annoying. my wife is a little upset I have 2 numbers now.
I was a little annoyed by the second number as well. More so because they don't mention it and only state it in the fine print on the site. However it only real comes into play when you call out, or experience my issue. I am currently in conversation with Samsung over a long posting back and forth. It is sounding like its a software issue (go figure), however they are not exactly forth coming with such information.
Are you having the same problem?

No you didn't read my whole description of the issue. Sometimes it does it the way its suppose to sometimes it does not. All depends on what I use to create the SMS. It is setup properly; double checked that many times.

Just got a new z5c - I'm in the US on AT&T. This didn't seem to be a problem until last night, but now I'm having messages take between 5 minutes and 2 hours to come into my phone. People are still getting my sent messages instantly. Never experienced this problem on my old phone (2013 Moto X using same sim card), so I'm guessing it's not the carrier but the phone itself.
Also, restarting my phone seems to cause all the backed up messages to come in at once. Really annoying problem, wondering if anyone can help.
I switched my sim card back to my old phone and a bunch of messages came flooding in. Asked friends to test texting me with sim card in each phone - texts came instantly on old phone and way delayed on z5c. Already disabled iMessage. I've tried using Textra, the messenger app that comes with the phone, and Google messaging and all have the same outcome.

Did you ever get this figured out? My wife is having a similar problem with her phone (MMS won't send) and I can't figure it out. Her LTE works fine and SMS messages send and receive like normal. But she can't send or receive picture MMS messages.
I remember someone posting they had to modify the settings (don't remember if it's apn or something else) to allow ONLY ipv4 (not both or IPv6)..that resolved the issue.

I tried that too. Someone mentioned it in another thread so I gave it a go. No dice.
I solved my issue by doing a factory reset - apparently there's a problem with importing messages from an older phone.
It doesn't sound like the same problem you're experiencing though.
Hi! I just wanna ask you guys if your z5 compact is displaying LTE on the signal bars on ATT. I have a z5 compact and i only get 4g. My device is registered as lte capable device.
All international versions display 4g instead of lte. So the 4g should indeed be lte speeds.
