unable to configure phone to use google voice voicemail - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone have success configuring google voice using the google voice app? When i login into google voice app and then say configure the app force closes.
I also don't see Voicemail settings under settings so that i can change my voicemail number from att to google voice.

The weird thing is that I can't find the voicemail settings on this phone :-(
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2

I am having the same problem...
The settings are located under the dialer and I was able to set GV as my voicemail.
Inbound calls work fine.
Outbound....
This has been a bit frustrating. If I set "Use Google Voice To Make All Calls" under GV settings and then try and make a call it does not do anything. Not even an error (although I assume there is one occurring)
However if I change it to "ask Me every time" then I am able to make outbound calls with my GV number.
I tried other dialers and have had the same experience.
Will keep experimenting for now

Ahh thanks I could now set the voicemail to use Google voice... It is kind of crazy they hid that setting under dialer

Cool. Any luck with using GV for all calls? This is the first phone I have had trouble getting GV working properly.

Hi,
I've been experiencing the exact same issue and found this thread- am using Omega 5.0 but it sounds like it's a rom independent issue.
Have you made any progress? I am also only able to call if I select "ask each time".

I'm having the same issue. I just flashed to the latest LF2 firmware and it's still happening. With the number of Galaxy S3s sold, I'm surprised that more people aren't complaining about this.
Even when I have the app set to "Ask me every time.." the call is still placed with my carrier number. It's a pain in the butt because now people think that I've changed my number and are starting to text my carrier number.
I had no issues with my S2 (Gingerbread or ICS)
My only suggestion is to post a review in the Market explaining this problem. If you see another review that is also having a problem, mark it as helpful.
EDIT: I tried this and it appears to be working!

OK, did a little more testing - and stumbled across something looks like only 7 digit dialing is affected. 10 digit dialing does indeed use google voice. Frankly, I'm not sure if this was the case in stock GB or not - with out a way to roll back, I can't test.

Well I am still struggling with this one.
I do not think it is a GV + ICS issue because it worked fine on the HTC One X for the two whole weeks I had one.
I feel that it is more likely and issue between the GS3 ROM and GV but I have no idea how to make Samsung aware of it. Especially since GV is only in the US and the phone is international.
I have the Sprint version coming in this week hopefully and I will be able to find some things out.
For now if you have not tried it, I highly recommend checking out GrooVe IP. It works really well I was quite surprised.

Yes, I think it is actually a long standing issue with 7 digit numbers, however it isn't working for me with 10 digit numbers either! Except strangely, if I type a random garbage number it will work, but not work on my existing contact numbers- I've even tried to delete the contact and phone manually and no luck either... do you mind telling me which rom you're using?

I think you two are correct. ICS isn't the problem, it's the GS3 firmware. My Galaxy S2 was running ICS and GV with no problems. And to clarify, with the i9300, we seem to be having two issues:
1. Some people are unable to configure GV for voicemail and,
2. Many of us are unable to make outbound calls using GV
For the first issue, I have had luck by either a) skipping the voicemail portion of the setup and adding voicemail settings manually or b) Installing a backup of GV from my GS2 using Titanium Backup
For the outbound calling issue, I think I fixed it by using the Country code + 10 digit number. So, I guess "11" digit dialing might be a better description for us USA owners.
312-555-1212 FAILS but 1-312-555-1212 is working for me.
Give that a try?

It's actually an issue with the Google Voice app and the SGS3 Dialer. It used to be that when you configure the Voice mail, it brings up the Phone configuration page in the settings, where you could set it, but in SGS3, the GV app can't bring it up, so you will need to do it manually.
Go into the Dialer and click on the Menu Button, go into Call settings, and there you can configure your Voicemail setting.

I tried to add a 1 or a +1 prefix but still no go. To give more description to the bug, if I reboot the phone, and under "always use GV", the first time I dial, it will create a "call not sent" prompt, but the call will actually go through via GV and function correctly. The second time however, it just fails to respond without any prompt.
Edit: I'm on ZNLE9, XXALF2 built.

I have no problems with 10 digits if I use the "ask me everytime" option- I'm only trying to figure out how to get it working under "use GV everytime". So it's just a bit tedious atm but not gamebreaking I guess.

Yes. Same problem here.
I have also found that if I just dial a random number that I have not called before that it will actually work the FIRST time and fail every time after.

Just use youmail. It works great and not a pita to set uo

Me too...
I'm also running into the "Make all calls" issue. "Ask every time" works perfectly.
I recall a few MIUI roms where out-of-the-box, the dialer app did not allow any third party access and this same issue would happen until you dug around in the call settings to allow access to other apps. Again, the "Ask every time" option worked, but "Make all calls" didn't until that setting was changed.
So, I'm assuming it is indeed an issue with the stock SGS3 rom's dialer application, for the GT-I9300 at least. Hopefully a fix will come soon.
I'm curious to see if "Make all calls" works after flashing a CM9 nightly. Trouble is, I just got this thing and wanna play around for a while before I root it.

I can confirm the same issue, as well. "Ask me everytime" works, but "Use for all calls" doesn't. This is on stock and Omega 5.0 roms.

Has anyone tried CM9 nightly to see if this issue goes away or any other suggestions?

Why can't SMS be easy? Or maybe I'm just dumb...

Couple of weird things I've noticed lately. First off, I never use the standard messaging Android app, I use Handcent. I also installed Voice and got it configured. I have 2 main questions, both of which are text related. First off, ever since installing Voice, Voice also now keeps tracks of my text messages. Is there any way to stop this? I have it configured now so that I dont get notifications from Voice, but if I go into the app to check a VM I see all my texts, and that's annoying.
Also, before when I would used to get an MMS (picture, video, whatever), it would connect to 3G to download it, even if I was connect to Wi-Fi. My phone no longer does that. Now if I get an MMS, even something small like 50kb, it takes like almost a whole minuet to download it because I'm pretty sure it's downloaded over 1x (doesn't show the 3G symbol anymore). Anyone know how to change this? I may have changed a setting somewhere, but I can't remember, and this is driving me nuts.
I used the G-Voice app on the 4G but I decided not to install it on the 3D. Using the stock message app is alot easier and have no issues with MMS. I dont get visual voicemail which kinda sucks but I still like it better then opening an app just to get to my texts.
Unless you disabled 3g manually you can just turn your phone on airplane mode and then back off airplane mode, or restart the phone... That's strange though, I'm pretty sure my messages download on 3g and i get them in like 15 seconds...

Go to your Google account in your desktop or mobile browser and disable text messaging from your voice settings. And the whole 3G MMS thing is a known issue I've always had using handcent, especially on my 3D. I never use stock app but since its so reliable because of compatibility issues with the 3VO being so new, it would be wise to go stock until app developers update their apps to support our phones.

I was able to verify that something is in fact screwy with my networks. I like the fact that if I'm connected to WiFi my 3G is disabled since it helps conserve battery, but I dislike the fact that this also means that MMS messages are forced to use 1x instead of 3G. I disabled WiFi and tried sending a picture over MMS and it sent just fine over 3G, but as soon as I reconnect to a WiFi network it forces any MMS's to use 1x instead of 3G so they take FOREVER to send/receive. Anyone know if there's a way to change this? I remember on my original EVO running CM6 I never had this problem. 3G remained disabled if WiFi was connected, except it would kick on for MMS messages. Sigh.
you have to uninstall google voice then reinstall. this time when it asks if you want to integrate say no then choose to use just for voicemail on the next screen

Thanks for the help guys. I just spend the last hour trying to get this setup the way I wanted and in the end I decided to completely remove Voice and stick to Sprint's voicemail for now, lol. I'll go back to Voice when we have CM for the 3VO
Still trying to figure out my 3G/MMS problem though Can any of you try it on your phones? While connected to a home/office WiFi network try to send an MMS (picture or whatever) and tell me if 3G comes on to send the message, or if it takes forever to send it.
Further testing: the exact same thing happens if I'm connected to 4G! Damn this sucks! So it's like, if I'm connected to a faster network (Wi-Fi or 4G) then 3G refuses to come on no matter what I do. Makes sense if you want to optimize battery life, but shouldn't it come on if it needs to do something that REQUIRES 3G? Such as send an MMS? -_-
Sorry if this is an ignorant comment, but why would the phone need to switch to 3G or 1X if you're connected via 4G? That seems really wonky to me.

I think all CDMA networks are like this, but the reason it needs to switch is because SMS/MMS messages can't be sent through WiFi or 4G.

That's interesting because I actually don't have this problem. If I have 4G or WiFi enabled it still has Mobile network and checked and enabled.
So is it safe to assume that you have the same issue with this phone? Where your MMS messages take forever to send/receive if you're on WiFi or 4G? I swear it never did this when I first got it, but now I'm starting to question that too...

Still going to keep trying to fix this MMS issue though since it's driving me CRAZY! I like the fact that 3G turns off when I'm on WiFi or 4G, but it should turn on briefly to send/receive MMS so I'm not stuck waiting forever while they send/receive over 1x. I'm going to delete Handcent just in case it's what's screwing everything up, but somehow I doubt it.

google voice and google talk

I'm coming from the sensation.. and so far, the Amaze has been great. The speeds are great and the build quality is second to none..
The only issues that are actually bugging me enough to mention have to do with two google apps. First, w/ google voice.. has anyone been able to successfully configure it to work as the default voice mail service? I can't seem to get it to switch over from the default phone voice mail service... any ideas?
Also, with google talk, I can't get the video chats to work. When I connect with a contact, it does the ringing thing and then goes to a black screen and people say they cannot see me. Again, any help?
Thanks in advance.
I don't use talk, but voice works fine for me. The auto setup won't work, but your call forwarding should already be set up as that is network specific on T-Mobile.
Could you specify what exactly google voice is not doing? "Not working" is pretty broad.
I am having the same problem. Seems to work for a while and then goes back to tmobiles VM. I recently manually forwarded the calls so I'll do some testing hopefully it will stick. I called tmobile andbthey said it was forwarded to my gv voicemail but calls were still sometimes going to tmobiles

True. So to be more specific, under the call settings, when I try to switch the "voicemail service" setting from "my carrier" to "google voice," I get an error message that says...
"Failed to retrieve and save current
forwarding number settings.
Do you want to switch to the new
provider anyway?"
Then when I select yes, it then says...
"Forwarding number change
unsuccessful.
Please contact your carrier if this
problem persists."
Has anyone else experienced this? This is the first device among g1, mytouch4g, mytouch4g slide, and sensation that was done this.
Thanks.

I had it all set up with my last Android device.
I upgraded to Amaze.
I couldn't use the voicemail provider because I had errors but my voicemail was still setup with GV.
Basically the only thing that the 'switch voice mail provider' does is change the call forwarding on your device. The error you're getting, I got as well, but my call forwarding settings were set up before I switched to my amaze. You have a few options.
The first is to go into your Google voice account on the web, and go into settings and then click Voice settings. you'll see your devices and next to them there's a link to activate. It will give you the codes to dial manually based on your carrier to set up call forwarding.
And as a last resort, if you have T-Mobile you can always call customer care and they can change your conditional call forwarding settings so that when the call meets a condition (no answer, out of area, busy) that it will forward to VM. I'd assume other carriers have similar abilities, but none that I can speak with any experience.
Thanks for all the help, everyone. I think I got it figured out.
Now how about the Google talk video chat issues.. anyone else having issues with it?
Google Talk video chat not working for me either. Pretty annoying after paying a lot of money for this phone.

Try going into Google Voice on the web and hit the "activate voicemail" link. It'll give you a number/code to dial in the dialer on your phone. After I did that, GV on the phone was able to set up voicemail correctly, iirc.

Thanks that worked.
Still doesn't work for me. Tried uninstalling and re-installing GV and also using the deactivate/activate link on the GV website and I'm still getting the error. This is frustrating.
Just go in and manually change it yourself in the phone settings, under the forwarding options. There are 4 options, leave the first one disabled (forward all calls). For the other 3, change them all to your Google voice number (for ex., 1-xxx-xxx-xxxx) and you will be good.

I'm almost positive it is AT&T wanting you to use their (nonexistant) Visual Voicemail app. My Skyrocket did the same exact thing. International GSII on ICS even worked fine.
I had the same issue. Make sure it says ATT in carrier when you log into google voice. If it doesn't redetect it. Mine still showed Sprint for 48 hours before it detected I was actually on ATT.
Also entered the codes as mentioned on this site:
http://kalsey.com/2010/10/using_google_voice_as_your_voicemail_on_att/
The important part to save you a click through:
"Second, open up your phone’s dialer and dial the following, replacing 1234567890 with your new Google Voice phone number…
*61*1234567890# (then hit send)
*62*1234567890# (then hit send)
*67*1234567890# (then hit send)
You should see a message appear on your phone after each time you press send. This will set up your AT&T account to take all calls when the phone is busy, when you decline a call, or when your phone is turned off or out of range and forward the call to your Google Voice number."
After doing the above I was able to change Carrier in settings to Google Voice without any problem.

[Q] Why does Google Voice not work with the dialer?

Hey all,
Did some searching for this issue and didn't come up with much. Basically, running a stock Rezound using the latest OTA update. Google Voice works fine for receiving and sending calls. However, I can only call out using Google Voice when I tap the person I want to call in my contact list. Is there some way for Google Voice to work with unknown numbers (i.e. just dialing a number the old school way)? It always uses my VZW number if I do this.
I have my Google Voice calling option set to "use for all calls" so I'm wondering what's going on. I am dialing the full number including an area code.
Thanks.
Thats the way I always use it. I select "use with all calls" and anytime I dial a number from the regular dialer... hell, any time I tap on any phone number in the browser... it just dials using Google Voice the way you'd expect it would.

Yeah, I'm not sure what's going on. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling - no dice. Dialer still causes VZW number to make the call instead of my GV number.
I'm using HTC Sense 3.5 if that helps any...? I haven't heard of anyone with this problem.
I have mine set to "ask me every time". Even for unsaved numbers, it'll prompt me with a box so I can select dial with / without Google Voice. Try setting it this way, and then attempt to call an unknown, see if it'll prompt you. That way you can narrow down whether it's your phone or the Google Voice app.

Yeah, I just tried doing the "ask me every time" option and dialed my house. Didn't give me any sort of message box asking me if I wanted to use GV or not and simply called using my VZW number.
I just got the phone two days ago and I've noticed some weird black artifacts (!) showing up during typical usage sometimes. Maybe I should just exchange it at this point?
Definitely do so if you are within your 14 days. That way you won't have to claim a warranty exchange for a refurb later on.

Yep, I still have 12 or so days left to do that. Sad, because I really like the phone. Hopefully the replacement will work properly with Google Voice...

Just got a replacement. No more screen issues and my bottom buttons are actually red! (they were pink before)
However...still have this same Google Voice issue. Very frustrating. Maybe it's because I skipped the voicemail setup?

You're obviously doing something wrong with the initial setup... That or you have it Google Voice not configured with your cell phone number correctly...
Works okay for me. On ice cream sandwich.
Google Voice not working when configured for ALL calls
I am running:
GV App build number 0.4.2.54
Galaxy Tab GT-P6200L with Android v4.0.4
When I set GV to ask before every call, it does, and my calls work just fine.
When I set GV to make all calls, it doesn't make calls, at all.
Since I went to the expense of porting my number to GV, it would be nice to use GV for my calls. I want to keep my cell number private, and GV should allow me to do this by showing my GV number to people when I call them.
Although I can do what I want with the extra screen press (when asked if I want to use GV), this is not how the app is supposed to work.
Is there a fix for this that anyone is aware of?
Thank you.

Sprint VM app not downloading

Hey all. For about a month or so now my phone won't download voicemail messages to the Sprint VM app. I have cleared the cache and even reset the device with no luck. I even upgraded to the 4.3 rom from Mo and it still doesn't work. I chatted with Sprint yesteday about the issue. They reset my voicemail on their side and again, no luck. They said I need to take it into a repair center and have them look at it because it seems to be hardware. I don't understand how it can be hardware. I can send and receive calls just fine. I can call my VM box and hear messages just fine. Any ideas? Thanks.

No Voicemail Notifications
If Visual Voicemail is not functioning properly on your device, consider the following options:
Make sure there are no third party applications that are conflicting with Visual Voicemail. Go SMS and Handcent are two applications that cause issues.
● *If Go SMS is installed, you will need to disable the Disable other text notifications option.
● *If Handcent is installed, you will need to navigate that application's menu as follows: Settings > Application Settings > Default Messaging Applications and select Disable.
Once you have confirmed that there are no third party applications conflicting with Visual Voicemail, follow these steps:
1. **Using your device keypad, press *38 and then Talk to cancel any call forwarding.
2. **Shut down your device, remove and replace the battery, then turn the device back on.
3. **Update your profile by navigating the menu as follows: Settings > System Updates > Update profile.
4. **Confirm that Visual Voicemail is working properly.
If the recommended steps above do not resolve your issue, dial *2 (for Sprint) or dial 611 (for prepaid customers) to talk to a Customer Care Representative.
For further Visual Voicemail support, go to the customer care page on your service provider's web site.

Well those steps didn't work so I guess I'll go the *2 route. Thanks for the suggestion.

Mine goes out occasionally as well, but since I updated to the official HTC 4.3 build via RUU it stops working daily. I can reset it and get it to work, but then it stops working several hours later - perhaps when I switch off of WiFi and/or switch cell towers.
Here is what I do to get it to work:
1. Clear the data for the VMM app
2. Launch app and let it do it's thing (reprovision itself making sure I agree to the data consent during setup
3. Update my profile via settings
4. send [email protected] a voicemail at least 1:30 minutes in length (using the Microphone icon in the VMM app)
5. leave myself a voicemail and ensure I get it
Note: try the steps above in a different order if it doesn't work the first time
Handcent seems to make no difference if it is selected as the default app for messaging or not.
The fact that it's failing to deliver voicemails less than 24 hours after re-setting everything up leads me to believe this Mo 4.3 HTC build still has plenty of issues to be ironed out (lack of data roaming, lost connectivity notification causing settings to crash when clicking on the notification, etc.) - however I am getting about 30-32 hours on battery with light usage now which is about double what I got before.
edit: just tried the hands free activation method ( ##72786#) and it's working again - will post again if it stops working
OK, so after resetting everything in my steps outlined in my previous post, and doing a hands free activation - my VMM worked for about 3 solid days.
Starting yesterday morning, with no changes on my end to my phone what so ever, messages started to just sit in my sprint voicemail (had to call my voicemail to retrieve) with VMM not notifying me of new voicemails nor downloading the VMM to my phone locally.
I had to do the hands free activation method a little over a month ago because I wasn't receiving texts. Maybe I should try that again for the vvm.
Saw this on the Sprint community forums related to this issue:
"I eventually talked to a higher up tech support in OK City. They were able to see my voicemail stuck in the Sprint system pending delivery, and after discussing it with the senior tech, they said it sounds a lot like my issue is related to a "market wide outage" that has been open for a few months now (which lines up with when I first started having issues).
I explained that my girlfriend who has the same phone with Sprint (but on a different plan) and my parents who are on the same plan but with different phones (and different location) don't have this issue. They said this issue depends on how your particular number gets routed through the system, so it is possible I would have the problem but the others would not.
Here's the kicker. The expected resolution of this ticket is for JUNE 30TH!!!!!!! That means that if this is indeed my problem, I will have suffered through it for 6 months before it is resolved. And that is IF this is my problem. If not, I have to wait 3.5 more months just to find that out.
I'm not even sure what I'm paying for anymore."
