My Atrix doesn't seem to be able to play any of my .mkv video files. Is anyone else having this problem? My captivate worked fine with the exact same movies. I have also tried downloading other video players such as rockplayer, mVideoPlayer and doubletwist but I am getting the same "sorry, this video cannot be played" or "file cannot be displayed or played" message.
i have also tried the copying the videos to both my external sd card and my internal memory, no luck.
The captivate seemed to support a lot of video formats with out resizing ....what does the atrix support

Yeah, Im having problems with that too. All my videos are either too small or can't play. Anyone know the ins and outs of the attrix media capabilities?
Ok, I just tried an .mp4 file with no success as well. this can't possible be correct. I tried 5 different media players, including the stock one.
mp4s work for me, but not mkvs with the same settings. Tegra 2 only supports baseline H264.
The Atrix only supports (3GPP) .3gp and MPEG-4) .mp4 video formats.
Codec support is for H.263, H.264 AVC, MPEG-4 SP and VP8
So far I haven't gotten the phone to play any of its said supported videos. I too had the captivate and am now very disappointed in the Atrix codec support. Maybe we were spoiled with the captivate?
Only AVI's play. Nothing else. Hopefully this will be remedied by Moto before anyone else.

That's because mostly any MPeg4 or H.264 video you try to play is high-profile. The Tegra 2 apparently only supports the baseline codec.
so are there any downloads out there that would supply the necessary codecs, or maybe another player (i'v already tried 5). i thought i got away from having to convert all of my videos when i got rid of my iphone
What pisses me off is I cannot even use DLNA to stream video to my phone since NOTHING is compatible.
I'm able to stream from my DVR and my Windows Media systems to any PC or DLNA equipped device in my house except for my Atrix.
The list of things that I like about this phone are slowly being overpowered by the list of crap that I should have to be dealing with.
This is supposed to be the "most powerful smartphone" on the market.
My 3 year old 3GS does more with less hacking.
And yeah... I threw up a little in my mouth when I said that as I hate having to hack my phone to get basic functionality.

Doesn't work with DirecTV DVR's.
I have the whole home service so I can play any movie on any TV or PC in my house.
Any DLNA equipped device works too... except for the Atrix of course.
I was able to play a 700+ MB avi file.
I was able to play tron in 264 mkv fine here.

I bought a Tegra 2 device that can't play my 720p mkv movies. Perfect.

mkv is a container, h264 is a codec
almost all phones can decode h264, xvid, divx, x264, etc, BUT in MP4 container.
just remux your files without recompress, its very quickly, just a few seconds using some program like YAMB or staxrip's just mux option.
if I have an avi file compressed with xvid my x10 can not play it with hardware decoders, but if I mux this avi in an mp4 file my x10 can play it very smooth, and remux its just take a half minute.

btw, if you want test, put any HD youtube video (MP4 high profile, wich is playable on atrix) and remux into MKV without recompress, I mean just mux, and try to play on atrix.

I'd like to see some proof that high profile plays on the atrix currently. Main profile with tweaking plays choppy, but high profile in my experience does not work at all. Also as a clarification, x264 is a fully functional h264 encoder, and can be used to create bluray quality video
There are a few video containers supported by the player shipped with the atrix.
*.avi
*.mp4
*.3gp
Having said those, the codecs that can be inside an AVI file are as follows:
Video: xvid/divx (h.263)... owait noone cares about the other ones. At any res 1080p and lower resized to MOD16
Audio: mp3... again noone cares about the other ones
Inside the MP4 you can have the following:
Video: xvid/divx/h263/h264 (in BASELINE or HIGHLY MODIFIED MAIN profiles only) at any res 1080p and lower resized to MOD16
Audio: AAC (LC or HC; avoid multichannel as it creates an annoying echo) /AMR
*.3gp is the format that a lot of current handheld devices can capture in. They have their own specific codecs depending on the device, but video that I captured with my old sony ericsson s710a plays flawlessly on all my newer devices.
As for MKV... I wish it supported it. I started using QQplayer for MKV with very low bitrate xvid/mp3 combos for subtitles and they play OK, just not well. Settings I have found that work well with QQplayer and xvid for MKV is any flavor of 480p mod16 resized @~1500kb/s, and mp3 of an ABR of 112 downsampled to 44.1khz. h264 inside mkv though... not happening.
Care to explian where's the "mux" option in the program you linked?
I was reading on other websites and here when I tried to post this thread about a player called Diceplayer that can play high-profile mkv on Tegra2.

I installed the trial but the app crashes for me before I can even select a file. Anyone else able to get the app to run? The thread above indicates it works on the Galaxy tab...
Hopefully someone else can get this app to work, the feedback seemed pretty impressive on the Galaxy forum.
EDIT: After reading the release notes it says that h.264 high profile still doesn't work on Atrix. Since other Tegra2 phones can do it, shouldn't the Atrix be able to as well? I wonder if it's just the software that they haven't optimized for the Atrix or if the Tegra2 in the Atrix is somehow different.
Sorry I fail at this, the info I was reading that said it didn't support atrix was from a previous version. Well I still can't get the trial to work on my phone and I don't want to pay $4 for something that doesn't work.

Diceplayer solve container problems. not Video decoding problems.
If your device can play H.264 high profile MP4, Diceplayer can play
H.264 High profile MKV.
but if not, diceplayer can't play it.
because diceplayer use same hw video decoder driver that is used by stock player.
You should retry playing your videos (in any player) after the 2.3.4 update, it seems to have fixed a lot of the h264 decoding issues for me

720p will play its the 1080p that wont play correctly for me! major lag!
Hi all,
So I got my Rezound a couple days ago and its awesome so far. I am trying to utilize this ridiculous screen by playing 720p video but having some problems getting smoother playback.
I have MKV files with h.264 encoding using Normal Profile but the Rezound doesn't seem to come with a native player for mkv files. So, I went and downloaded MX Video Player. MX can play the file but occasionally gets the stutters. I noticed that MX says that the HW is not supported for HW decode so I am wondering if there are any video players with Rezound HW decode support. Tried also both of the Mobo players, mvideoplayer, and Act 1 with no luck either.
Also looking for specifics about how others are encoding HD files for smooth playback on the Rezound. What format, codecs (audio and video), and what app you are using to encode the files.
Appreciate the help!
i am pretty sure rockplayer supports hardware decoding.
I have been using Vplayer. Not sure if it supports the format you use but it works great with all my Divx movies

Read on some other forums/posts and am trying DicePlayer now. Seems to work perfectly for all my media so far.
Anyone have any luck getting the View or Flyer to play 720p mkv files? Using mx video player, the files will play for a few seconds, then the player freezes. Shows that it is using hardware decoding in the few seconds before the freeze. If I quickly switch it to SW fast decoding, it will play but the CPU can't keep up so the playback is jerky.
The same files played fine on my OG Epic with HW decoding (obviously I know hummingbird <> snapdragon) and my ET4G. They also stream just fine to my PS3, so I'm pretty sure it's not the files. Anyone else have any ideas?
My workaround right now is just to handbrake the files to 1024x600 mp4 files (which play just fine with the hardware decoder, just adds an extra step that takes awhile even with my 3.2ghz C2Q).
Have you tried a different video player? I hear MoboPlayer is quite good.

I should have specified that I tried mobo and rockvideo player. The others either don't work at all (rock) or didn't handle DTS audio (mobo).
I think you need to compress the files in Handbrake (try keeping it at 1280x720). I wonder if its just the file size that's the problem. It makes sense more powerful phones/devices can handle them. Perhaps the tablet just can't handle it. I haven't yet received my View, but I think the View just can't handle the videos you are using.
I'm using mx player and can play 720p x264 encoded videos in mkv containers smoothly.

I'm not positive about this but I believe mx player will play almost every type of video file. It is free from the play store, I have never had a file that wouldn't play with mx player.
Edit: I may have misunderstood your question, I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to software/hardware decoding. I Would give mx player a shot either way.

The simple answers is....it depends...
The complicated answer...
MKV is a container format. An MKV file can use all sorts of different video and audio codecs within, so the file extension doesn't really "mean" anything useful. It gets more complicated than this given that, though h.264 and derivative video encoding is popular and commonly found within an MKV, not all bitrates and keyframe types will decode successfully in hardware on our phone.
