[Q] MKV files hardware decoding - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi.
Should the Vibrant support hardware decoding for MKV files?
I have tried playing these files (SD quality) using Vplayer and MoboPlayer. Both can't play them with hardware decoding, only software decoding which drains battery.
Should I install some codecs to support this?
Thanks.

I'm not positive about this but I believe mx player will play almost every type of video file. It is free from the play store, I have never had a file that wouldn't play with mx player.
Edit: I may have misunderstood your question, I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to software/hardware decoding. I Would give mx player a shot either way.

The simple answers is....it depends...
The complicated answer...
MKV is a container format. An MKV file can use all sorts of different video and audio codecs within, so the file extension doesn't really "mean" anything useful. It gets more complicated than this given that, though h.264 and derivative video encoding is popular and commonly found within an MKV, not all bitrates and keyframe types will decode successfully in hardware on our phone.

moboplayer setup

I installed moboplayer and thought when it started up that it would tell me which codec to install. Well it didn't so I installed the arm v7 neon, which doesn't seem to work because mobo still wants to use software decoding, which leaves something to be desired. Any got an idea how to get the hardware decoding to work with mono?
Im having the same issue. I tried to play different formats and it seems that it depends more on the resolution than on the codec. I was able to play an non hd xvid movie in avi container just fine, while a 720p mp4 from youtube would only play with soft decoding and very slow.

Wrong... It's based both on format (mp4) and resolution. Chisleu had a thread a bit back as well as Dalingrin with the specific setup for videos to play with hardware acceleration.
Anything other than specifically encoded mp4's and you're going to be able to only play the videos in software decoding.

MKV Player for Thunderbolt?

i've tried a few players off of market that said they play .mkv files but when i try to play them it'll say 'unsupported format', won't display video, or just won't play period.
does anyone know of one that actually does work with the Thunderbolt?

It's probably a problem with the codecs/scheme used for those files themselves. MKV is just a container and you could have one of a plurality of unsupported codecs or encoding schemes in that container. I know this doesn't help you a great deal...I'm just saying just b/c a player says it "plays mkv files" doesn't mean it plays every mkv file.

MKV could be a number of video encodings. Read up on it if you're interested in knowing more.
I wouldn't try playing content above 800x480 resolution either unless you want to kill your battery really quick and see it run sluggish.
try diceplayer v1.5.3

Diceplayer use HW video decoder in Qualcomm chipset.
it can play 720p MKV+DTS.

[Q] View hardcoded subtitles in MKV files?

Has anyone found an app or workaround to view hardcoded subs for MKV files or other video files?
If not, can someone post a link on how-to extract subtitle files from a video file into .SRT format?
correct me if i'm wrong but i thought hardcoded subs were placed directly onto the movie vs softcode that use an srt etc file? shouldn't they just be there?
Some video files have subs embedded that you can toggle on/off with no need for separate files, I guess he's talking about that?
You must mean softsubs as boondoc said. Try mVideoPlayer on the market if that does not work you can use mkvextract to export the sub file.

Sorry, I meant soft subs included in the same file. Not hardcoded, my mistake. I will give mvideoplayer a shot.

You can also try MX Video Player. Uses 2 cores on sw decoding and also having hw decoding.
I recommend Dice player also, for those couple of files MX Video Player can't play properly.
I found MX Video Player to be the better of the two recommended. HW decoding works great for high resolution 1280x720 MKV and XviD encoded video.
mVideoPlayer works ok for XviD and DivX, but the MKV file audio/video was choppy. I imagine the SW decoder is optimized as well.
Thanks to both of you guys for the suggestions!
Diceplayer support MKV subtitle without extraction + Full Video HW acceleration
+ DTS/Flac/AC-3 audio.
Hi,
I have nearly the same issue, but on an eeepad Transformer. I created a mkv file with the programm makeMKV. This programm creates one mkv file with everything inside (video, all audio tracks, all subtitles). If I play this file with vlc on the pc, I can choose between all audio tracks and all subtitles. But, if I play the file on my asus eeepad transformer with mx video (or with any other app, for example vPlayer) there's only the possibility to chose between the diffenrent audio tracks. Subtitles can't be chosen.
Has someone an idea?

Video Player for Rezound with HW decode?

Hi all,
So I got my Rezound a couple days ago and its awesome so far. I am trying to utilize this ridiculous screen by playing 720p video but having some problems getting smoother playback.
I have MKV files with h.264 encoding using Normal Profile but the Rezound doesn't seem to come with a native player for mkv files. So, I went and downloaded MX Video Player. MX can play the file but occasionally gets the stutters. I noticed that MX says that the HW is not supported for HW decode so I am wondering if there are any video players with Rezound HW decode support. Tried also both of the Mobo players, mvideoplayer, and Act 1 with no luck either.
Also looking for specifics about how others are encoding HD files for smooth playback on the Rezound. What format, codecs (audio and video), and what app you are using to encode the files.
Appreciate the help!
i am pretty sure rockplayer supports hardware decoding.
I have been using Vplayer. Not sure if it supports the format you use but it works great with all my Divx movies
Chris
Moboplayer should work.
Read on some other forums/posts and am trying DicePlayer now. Seems to work perfectly for all my media so far.

[Q] MKV file playback with Xperia Mini?

Hi. I would like to ask for some help. How can I play MKV files with Xperia Mini? One of the video program, I can not use hardware acceleration, so every MKV video is slow. A single MKV file has been found that their corresponding interest rates played a video-playing programs. As it turned out later, this MKV X264 High L3.1 encoded. MKV L4.0 high or higher, which is encoded, you can not play with hardware acceleration, it will be slow. I checked the description of the Mini, H264 video encoding to a maximum of L3.1 High play. There are some software options on the Mini to the popular High L4.1 encoded videos played back with hardware acceleration? Someone has encountered this problem? Is there any solution to it? I would really appreciate if someone could help. Sorry my bad english.
try mx video player, it uses harware acceleration
It does not work. High L4.1 x264 MKV files through software only willing to play, which is slow. All players, this is a problem.
