[Q] Soft brick ? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Mmmm ok, I'am stupid and all, I know.
So I replaced framework-res.apk from root explorer and now my phone it stuck to the first screen, showing "Samsung Galaxy S II" in white.
I am root of course, XWKE7.
I can go into recovery, I have the 4 options (reboot, apply update from SD, wipe data and wipe cache).
I can't get the phone to go into download mode to flash from ODIN.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks a lot.

The download recovery jig .

Ok, thanks a lot, bought one from eBay.
Coming from an HTC Desire, didn't know that trick with the Galaxy S line.
That's great !

I coming from the G1, so I'm wondering that there are no zips for flashing around in the forums.
Would be as easy as copy the zip to the sdcard and flash it in recovery mode. It is so convenient. Flashed my phone with the newest stuff regularly when on train etc, where no pc was available. In the Galaxy world it seems you always have to struggle with Kies.

That's just for now. Once they got clockwork recovery working on the s1 could easily flash .zip things through recovery.

We have CWM!

Next time, try to to backup your files first in CWM in Recovery Mode before experiementing.
It helped me alot...

Yes, and the OP even wrote that he had the option to flash an update.zip. But I haven't seen any update.zip files in the forum yet which would have been an easy solution, only saw instructions how to use Kies, Odin or Heimdall.
Do I miss something?

He doesn´t have CWM, he has samsungs recovery, samsungs recovery have the ability to flash via update.zip but it is limited to signed .zip files from either Samsung or google
CWM has 7 options on the first screen

mate all u need to do is connect your sgs2 to your PC and fire up adb and manually rename the framework-res.apk or push over a new one..been there myself on the first day

Ok it worked...
That was that simple indeed.
Thanks mate !
I'll have this recovery JIG in case of a more serious problem.

Superb, im considering buying a jib off ebay! seen some from the UK for £5, or just build my own! Ive gone down the route of making a backup of a basic phone state i like, then if there are any problems i at least have apps and setup the way i like it :d

Just to be clear, adb did the trick.

Finding all types of different info for this phone. Everything seems fairly old. The phone is on 2.2.1 with ED04. I would be very greatful if someone could shoot me a link to a working method.
Lots of threads I'm finding have dead links as well so I kind of stuck.
Edit, sorry if this is in the wrong section my bad.

Click HERE and download superoneclick and unzip it.
When you are done, plug your phone to computer (with Debugging Mode "On") and open up SuperOneClick then click "Root".
Info on rooting this phone is going to be rather old considering just about all the recent roms for the fascinate root the device during the flashing process...if you are just trying to root the phone to obtain super user permission to install certain apps you can use the z4 method or super one click or, what I recommend is to find a rom you would like to flash...comm rom 2.0 for example and see if it contains root access...(comm rom is one example that does just this)..so I guess a question back to you is in order...what are you looking for...root access, custom rom, or both?

Don't be sorry...this is the q and a section !
All you will have to do is download the rom of choice and put it on the root of your sd card...not in a folder, download odin to your pc install any necessary drivers, make sure your pc will recognize your device at this point, and download your cwm file to your pc and save it in the odin folder..(I use the 3-30 fix all file) connect your phone to pc using stock samsung usb cable, pull battery hold the down volume button...this will put you in download mode, once odin sets up a com port, click the pda button and only the pda never click phone. flash your cwm file, when odin is done install your batt and hold volume up, down, and power until cwm appears, (if you let the phone boot fully you will have to re odin since the stock kernel will over write cmw) at this point you will do a factory reset, wipe cache, and go to advanced and wipe dalvik cache then go to install zip from sd, find the rom you put on your sd card earlier and select install zip, if your rom does not contain a kernel you must flash the kernel also prior to your first boot up or you will have to re odin.
I also suggest backing up your contacts via exporting then to sd v card or backing up via g mail...after all is said and done reboot back to cwm via up, down, power button and do a nandroid back up to save you phone as is...just in case! You can always restore back to that point.

Wow thanks a lot for all that man. This would be my 3rd android phone to flash, so I feel pretty confident. But this one just seemed to have a lot more different ways to go about things then previous phones.
So I appreciate you breaking it down for me.
No prob...if you get stuck p.m.me and I'll give more in depth directions but the most important thing is to be patient...it can take 15-20 mins while your phone is loading so don't pull the batt and start over unless you have waited that long..good luck! Once you get the hand if it, its not that hard and our phones are pretty brick proof...I'm sure not completely, but this isn't your first rodeo so if you get into trouble read read read especially the stickies and when in doubt send me a p.m.

Ok cool thanks again and will do. Its actually the wifes phone so I won't be doing it for a couple days probably as shes busy and needs it. I was going to do it last night but kind of got overwhelmed with all the info.

Odin doesn't work after root!

So I rooted my Note a few weeks back using the non-counter advancing rooting method via odin. Worked flawlessly, and I'm rooted without issue. Tired of waiting for stock ICS to come out so I want to start flashing ROM's. Trying to install the newest CWM through Odin....well Odin doesn't recognize when the phone is connected. Tried 2 different windows 7 VM's and one W7 machine. I flashed via one of the VM's and it worked fine. It's not working on any machine that I have. I also have a mac book pro, but no idea if there is a apple Odin. What do I do? Don't have the android APK and really don't wanna go that route through ADB.
Can I just reboot into recovery and 'install via sd' or whatever the selection is, navigate to CWM touch recovery zip and install? or will that potentially do some serious damage?
Also if it's available on the CWM website as a DL why isn't it an option through the app to install? Would make my life WORLDS easier at this point.
A rooted phone would not interfere with Odin, completely unrelated. Perhaps your cable is bad, or you are installing the wrong drivers.
That said, once you have CWM on your phone, there should be no reason to use odin again. The updates for CWM are flashable via CWM. Most every single ROM is flashable via CWM. I can't really tell from your description if you were successful installing a custom recovery yet.

Trying to install a custom recovery. Sorry may not have made that clear in my rant. I've tried a couple different cables, and same luck. I DLed the CWM app from the Google Play, but have not installed a custom recovery. Trying to get CWM touch installed. Galaxy Note isn't an option when I try and install a custom recovery(CWM Touch Recovery...or hell any CWM recovery Note isn't an avialable model) via CWM.
So the options I've found so far are: Install custom recovery(CWM) via Odin, or install via ADB using android APK.
Are there other options to installing CWM recovery?
Sorry kind of a newb to all of this. I had a Dell Streak before this as my first android and it was a PITA to install Custom ROM's and root that I didn't mess with it much. Did root it and managed to soft brick my phone and bring her back to life. lol Then figured it was too much a pain to deal with.
ROM manager does not support our phone. I wouldn't use that app for now. So you're booting into download mode and Odin doesn't see your phone? I'm assuming you're in download mode?

This...if not restart everything from scratch. Uninstall the drivers and re-install them again and restart Odin. Also make sure you are using the latest version of Odin.

Correct isn't recognized in DL mode. The phone is recognized just fine when I plug it in regularly. Can transfer back and forth all day long.
The ICS ROM I wanna try uses CWM recovery to install. So trying to get everything to line up as to not end up with a brick. lol

Believe I've done that before, but will try again. Latest version of Odin higher than 1.8.5 or something like that? If so that's what I'm using.

Not sure what's going on with XDA, but my reply didn't post. So here goes: Yes that is correct I would boot into DL mode and odin didn't see my phone.
So I opened one of my VM's( the one previously used to root) uninstalled/reinstalled the drivers and voila odin sees my phone again. CWM touch recovery installed. Now off to flash Team Perfections ICS. Only chose them as they have a step by step video of installation and it seems stupid easy. Also seems to be the most stable from reading. Could be wrong. I'll try it out and wait for official CM9.
Have you tried using a different PC. I remeber my desktop wouldnt let me odin all the sudden one day. I tried my laptop worked no problem. using a VM sounds sketchy id be afraid there were too many facets or some risk of data corruption on its way. That may be incorrect but data > virtual hardware > hardware > phone. just too much for me -_-

All roms are that easy to flash once you have cwm, it's just booting into recovery, wiping, and flashing.
Try em all and see which one works best fir you

I hear ya. Just when I start reading about some ROM's they say: oh and you need to flash this, this and this or else your phone will blow up and likely kill your whole family.
Being somewhat new to the flashing business just flashing ONE zip file is enough for me. Yet alone a bunch of other things. Just starts to confuse me with the multiple flashes......do I install all the same( as far as "flashing" goes)? Just boot into recovery navigate to file...double click and it'll do it's thing? If so I suppose that's not all that difficult. I like the one and done approach though. lol
Yup.
If there are multiple zips, flash them all like the main ROM.
Sweet! Flashed the Objection ICS. Like it so far. Seems like the modem is kinda all over the map for lte speeds.

[Q] I think I've stuffed up "Badly"!!

Hi Guys,
I'm new to this Forum and very new to Android. I have the Galaxy S2 and while attempting to install Clock Work Mod, following the instructions from GalaxyS2Root, all of a sudden the phone locked up at the Samsung Galaxy S2 sceen with the yellow exclamation mark and that's as far as I got.
With great difficulty, I can get into the recovery screen, but I haven't got a clue, what I can do from here.
Is the phone recoverable, or have I just destroyed a brand new phone? I don't have a rom zip on my sd card, so I couldn't install a new rom from the card.
I have tried everything to get it going again, but I think the more things I try, the worse it gets. I think I have now wiped the existing rom off completely and wiped the caches, all because I was panicing.
I even thought of removing my sd card, putting it into my wifes Galaxy Ace and downloading a replacement rom to it and then try to install the new rom back to my phone.
But guys, I'm really panicing here and don't know what to do!!
Can anybody please help me out, or do I now throw a brand new phone into the garbage?
Thank You.............dixie (Help Please)

Just flash a new firmware via odin.It will be new again

Hello,
You could try downloading the rom required and install using odin.
You will need to make sure you get the right version for your phone and use odin to flash.
I've not done exactly what you have before I got into a simple boot loop and had to re flash. Live and learn I guess!

Thanks for your reply,
But how do I connect my phone to Odin and what menu should the phone be in, in the recovery mode?
Doesn't the phone have to be in the download mode?
I can only seem to get into the basic recovery mode, ie volume up + power + home keys.
Regards..............dixie.
Have you tried to get into download mode (volume down + home + power)?
You should be able to do that if you can get into recovery. Once in download mode, connect to your PC, start Odin and choose PDA, then select the tar that you have downloaded (it will be in zip form until you unpack it).
Read some threads about Odin/Download mode before you start and make sure you are happy to proceed.

O'k I did as you told me, but the first strange thing is, when I extract the zip file I get the following: boot.bin, cache, factory fs, hidden, modem.bin, param.lfs, Sbl.bin and zImage.............there is no exe type file!!!
However if I open odin, click on PDA and enter the whole zip file location and press start, everything goes ahead as planned.
I get a "Pass" and the phone restarts, I get the small tune and the blue moving lights on the screen, but then it just jams up, on the S Samsung Galaxy S2 screen. That's as far as the boot sequence goes.......frozen on the Galaxy S2 Screen!!
Any suggestions?
Regards......................dixie.
Pull out the battery, wait a few seconds replace and try to boot again. If that doesn't work, check you have the correct firmware to flash and try again with Odin.
Or have a look at this thread:

Right, for starters you need to give relevant information if you expect accurate help otherwise you're going to end up screwing your device up.
Which model of S2 do you have?
Which rom do you have? (give link)
Which guide did you follow? (give link)
If you can get into cwm its just a case of "wipe data/factory reset" and then flash custom rom of your choice from sdcard. Just go into cwm>mounts&storage>mount USB (this will mount cards onto PC if connected) so once connected copy your rom across.
I recommend the new wannam lite rom if you want new samsung JB based rom.
If you want to flash via ODIN then you should only be flashing a .tar or .md5 file in PDA section. If your extracting a zip and you get all the files you mentioned in your above reply then you have wrong file.

O'k thank you for your reply and thank you to the others that replied.
I was using an incorrect rom to flash and an incomplete rom at that!
I downloaded a different rom, extracted the files and flashed with odin. Now I am up and running and have the phone back to full woking order.
That was pretty scarery stuff and I thought I had bricked the phone for ever, I guess a little knowledge is helpful but dangerous, if one isn't sure of what they are doing.
Thank you once again for your help, it was much appreciated. I'll contact you again no doubt, next time I create a stuff up.

Hi Guys, one last request. I would like to root the phone and after a considerable amount of reading/research, the root file that I require, seems impossible to find. When I do find it and download, the .rar file is empty except for a zImage file!!!
My phone is the Galaxy S2 i9100 running ICS 4.0.3 Baseband Version i9100XXLPQ Kernel Version 3.0.15-i9100XXLPQ-CL223505 Build Number IML74K.XXLPQ.
I bought this phone, while I was visiting China and it has been great, up until I managed to brick it by accident.
Anyway, I apparently need the CF Root for XXLPQ v5.4, which I have downloaded six times, from various sites and every time I extract, it's empty, except for an image file!!!
I live in Australia and use the Telstra Network.....should I change to a more suitable Firmware, or maybe a stable custom rom, or can someone give me a link, for the appropriate working CF Root file?
Much Appreciate and Thank You........dixie.
Ignore the above post guys, a little more reading and I found my mistake.
However, I am still interested in the suggestion of a Custom Rom, which would work successfully, on Australian Networks.
Cheers to All......dixie.

I'm still new myself here but i'm sure ur phone is already rooted from what u said above. When u boot into recovery does stock recovery load or CWM ? if anything other than stock Samsung recovery then your already rooted.
Also u dont need to unzip the rar file its ready as is.
If ur phone is actually not rooted by far the easiest method is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719
u dont need an insecure kernel and theres no risk involved even if u mess up. I was a lil hesitant to root my phone but used that method and all went fine, now i've learned so much in the past 2 weeks i'm flashing other kernels and tried lots of roms.
Peace

Yes thanks for the reply. I discovered that I didn't have to extract the root file, as it was already a .tar (stupid me).
So now I have a rooted phone and the Official ICS version XXLPQ, which is working in Australia, but I have noticed, that most of the time the Network is showing "edge".
All I really have to find now, is a good, stable, custom rom, that will also work in Australia.
A couple of observations....
You don't need "a good stable custom rom that will also work in Australia". Region has nothing to do with how a rom performs/your experience with that rom. If you're having issues with connectivity/you're not happy with data speeds, flashing/trying other modems may help. I suggest you read through this thread, at various times people have discussed which modems have worked well with different carriers (particular modems seem to work well for most people using a particular carrier). You can then search for CWM flashable versions of these modems & test them out until you find one that gives you connectivity you're happy with.
The other observation is you're a bit lacking in the 'basics'. I highly recommend you take the time to read through the guides. Knowing the basics makes it less likely you'll bork your phone at some stage, and that you'll be able to solve any problems that come up in a methodical/logical way (as opposed to guessing).
........a bit!!!!!!

[Q] Galaxy Tab 10.1 GT-P7510 wifi Root Issues

I have been trying all day to root this bad boy. After finding nothing but broken link after broken link I finally found <cm-10.1-20121229-UNOFFICIAL-p4wifi.zip> and <cm10.1-20130116-UNOFFICIAL-p4wifi.zip> I am stuck at this point because I don't know which to use and well, quite frankly im a noob. ive watched a couple videos and even talked to a guy who rooted his but, i'm unsure about where to put this friggin file. some people say to have my tab in usb debug mode while others say to the contrary. some say to put my tab into odin3 while others say to have it in recovery mode but the one consistency is that they all say that its simple and "noob proof". Well with all the contradictory methods i've researched the one thing ive concluded is that for a noob it really aint that easy to sort through everything ive found and realize what the hell to do. I really don't wanna brick this frigger so this if anything is a desperate cry for help.
Long story short, I have the files which one do I use and what do I do with it?
Sincerely, Nooby McFirsttimerson

There's nothing hard about rooting if you want to flash a custom ROM on your tab, 99.9% of the developers pre-root their ROM's so you dont even have to root it, so did pershoot.
Step 1: You start from zero: you have a gt-p7510 STOCK ROM on android 4.0.4, if not, flash the ics bootloader from droidbasement.com via odin in PDA slot.
Step 2: go to droidbasement.com, and it depends which android version you want to flash, 4.0.4, 4.1.1, or 4.2.2, let's say you want do flash android 4.2.2, download clockworkmod recovery 6.0.3.4, flash it via odin in PDA slot and reboot your device.
Step 3: once you have cwm 6.0.3.4 flashed, connect your tablet to your pc and get the latest nightly version, YOU DON'T WANT TO USE EXPERIMENTAL BUILTS!! Since they were only ment for pure development and they could be very unstable. Download the latest version here http://get.cm/?device=p4wifi here and copy the file over from your computer to your device. DO NOT FORGET!
Step 4: reboot your device into recovery and do a factory reset, go to your 0 folder in recovery and flash the latest nightly built. ( a factory reset via cwm will not delete data on your SDcard
Step 5: reboot your device again when it's done and wait up to 10 minutes.
And last but not least step 6: enjoy!!

In Odin, there is a PDA button. Click it and select your file.

Get your tablet in download mode, it's the same way as you go to recovery, but then the other image on the right side, your tab will warn you that flashing other software may cause problems on your tab and blabla, just ignore that and push yes. Connect your tab to your pc and open odin, while it's connected, your pc will look for a driver i think. Once odin is opened, select PDA slot and search for the recovery safed on your computer, then hit the square box and make sure the box in front of'PDA SLOT' is check with a 'V', now it will flash cwm on your tablet
So i have to have odin on my pc?

Why do people always feel they have to run to customs roms? To me that is like saying to somebody who asks how to change a wheel on a car that first they have to remove the engine and put in a supercharged version instead with all the added unreliability that goes with it.... Custom roms are great but sometimes when answering a question the sledgehammer to crack a walnut approach is not the best..... if you are happy with stock rom to start with try rooting that first then if you want to go further try the custom approach
If you just want to root a stock firmware then all you have to do is install clockwork recovery using odin and flash a root zip through recovery.....
Root file is here for you and if you go to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=44527963#post44527963 there is a good version of odin for your tab and drivers (if you haven't already installed them ) that I recently posted
As long as you are sure it is 7510 you have then recovery for pushing through odin is attached as well
I cant have root permissions after flashing CM 10.2 (I accidentally did full sd card data wipe with twrp 2.6.0.0 before) , now none of apps that request root works..I tried to flash older superuser.zip files but that didnt work (when trying to flash superUS v1.50 zip it always writes ''failed')'. Any solution to that?
Try installing SuperSu from play store, see if that works otherwise if that doesn't work go to android development stickies for this forum' download root.zip and try to root again through recovery

Ok.. being as you're new to this.. I advise you to watch QBKing's video on rooting this device, really any of his rooting vids will show you how to install odin/drivers and then to Odin the custom recovery...
If you feel unsure after watching the video or have any questions... just hit me back and I can walk ya through it..
Don't be worried if I don't see you're reply right away.. I'm on my way home from vaction and my service is less than spotty.. ( thanks sprint )
The video was enlightening to say the least. However the thread at ac syndicate is now closed. Sooooo im wondering if there is anywhere else i can find the necessary files

I have been trying for a whole day. I have used files either from other posts in xda or other sites. Still I could not root my 7510. I have finally successfully rooted the tablet with the files in this post.
Thanks a lot!

Glad it worked ! :good:
If anybody else needs the files to root or a link to qbking77 video....look at my FAQ thread....everything needed to root is there, minus the Sammy drivers( you can get them when you plug you're tab into the PC )...
Also...do yourself a favor and as soon as you root...go put infamous twrp recovery on the device..I have flashed every single ROM I've put on my device through this recovery...no problems yet...Lol.
Link to FAQ thread.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2458846
Edit...this is for p4wifi only on stock 4.0.4
Copy them where on the device?

Where do you copy the step 3 files? I can't even access the file directory on the tablet for more than 1-2 minutes before it resets. I flashed the step 2 files (no change), and having trouble knowing where to but the step 3 files and how to access the target directory. Could you clarify for me? Thanks.

You attempted to flash a ROM made for a different phone (d2att), never do that again unless you want a brick.

Yea, look at the sticky. Anyway, it is probably something to do with your recovery. Try flashing it using cwm.

Yea, you can flash .zip versions of cwm through the recovery menu. You could also flash it through Odin if you can't find a flashable .zip of it, probably easier that way. Don't just flash any .zip of cwm you find through twrp, it has to be one made to be flashed.

You should just be able to download the recovery in this topic (.zip not tar.md5) and install it using twrp. Put the file on your external SD since you can't access your phone.

You know that the file that you have to put in odin has to be a ridiculous amount of mb or gb then other things because i made that mistake 2 lol.
You have to extract it when using your pc and stuff and sometimes you get others files like ones that arent even like 100 mb or whatever that can look like a rom.
Give me a full list of evrything you exactly do when flashing and wich file and name and how big the file is and also your model number... The s3 ATT right?
Can someone verify for me that att has an own bootloader and stuff and you can only like odin flash their stock roms right?
You can always use phillz touch recovery and download a custom rom like cyanogenmod for your phone! Then you can acces it... If you dont brick your phone.

Huh? What exactly did you do? If you flashed Philz correctly using TWRP then you should have his recovery on your phone.
I think he needs to report his post to get it moved to his section with people to help him with his exact model and the correct stickies to help him.
If he can't then someone may need to report it for him.
Either way here is some reading material I found after a quick search in your forum.

Always make sure of what your are flashing, that its correct for your phone and always back up

So you got Philz touch running? If so, then you should be able to flash hellfire with it (assuming that you definitely have the right rom for your phone model).

Try redownloading the rom maybe an bad download.
When it doesnt work then your phone just cant take it and try something else man.
And also ask the developer from the hellfire rom if your phone is compatible with the rom (sometimes you need to download some sort of kernel or whatever it needs)

Is this the first ROM you've tried to flash? What were you running before trying to flash hellfire?
To fix your situation should be fairly simple. 1.download a different ROM to an external SD card, I recommend slimkat because its pretty stable. They use a unified d2lte build for all d2 devices. Before you install the zip, wipe data/factory reset, manually format system, wipe cache partition and dalvik cache, install the ROM zip and gapps zip if required then reboot and profit.
