[Q] Does the SII have the nasty WiFi->3G-Bug #2207? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I'm considering an SII but want to know something first:
I currently have a Desire and is has a very annoying bug (many people are affected but only a few know about this). It's an official Android bug and has the number #2207.
This is how the bug affects me:
1. Device is connected to 3G.
2. Connect device to WiFi. 3G data connection closes as usual.
3. Connect device to charger (Policies: WiFi always on/WiFi always on while charging).
4. Charge it for more than 3 hours (most likely over night).
5. In the morning, disconnect the device from the charger & put it in your pocket (WiFi still on).
6. Leave the WiFi-radius.
7. Now the problem is: 3G data won't turn on. If you switch the display on (e.g. 15 minutes after leaving the WiFi-radius) there's still the WiFi-icon on the screen. A few seconds after that, it vanishes but the 3G-icon does not show up. In fact, the whole time between leaving the WiFi and now, there was no data connection anymore.
Solution: Reboot or Airplanemode On/Off
This is so annoying!
BTW: It is important that you have to charge it (without waking the display) for more than 3 hours for the bug to appear.
I don't know exactly why I have this bug but several other people (having other devices an ROMs) have it too. There's even a fix on the Android Market (WifiFixerFree) that kinda works... but it's very sad that Android has such a critical bug until now.
My question: Does the SII have this bug? Maybe someone with an identical WiFi-charging-behaviour as me can answer this?
Thanks!

Nobody? 10chars

Never heard that one before on SGS 1 nor 2 .
jje

I can confirm that at least my sgs2 turns the mobile data properly on when i leave my wifi-range in the morning.

I can confirm that there is a bug with the wifi after you plug in the phone to charge.

Okay... contradicting opinions. Anyone else?

Switches fine for me when driving away in the morning and it did on my HTC Desire too.

[Q] Wifi connection gets disabled on sleep...

I have a GTab runn Vegan 5.1 and it runs great. The one issue that I have is that my Wifi gets disabled each night when it goes to sleep. When I say "disabled" I do not mean this it disconnect, but rather that something is actually putting it into a "Disabled" state and I must select the connection and choose to enable it.
Does anyone have any thoughts on what could be doing this? I have dug through every setting I can think of and also looked at any apps that might be doing this. I even went so far as to remove all my battery saving apps, but no dice.
Any suggestions?

Have the sleep policy set at never and this does not change anything. From what I understand this setting will disconnect wifi when the device goes to sleep. In my case the connection is not disconnected but rather completely disabled. So it seems that there is some other thing disabling the connection.
So, to give a bit more info here, I have installed wifi keep alive to try and save the connection. This keeps the wifi from being disabled when it is plugged in, but it still gets disabled when it sleeps and is also unplugged. (I.e. on battery and sleeping)
So, I am starting to think that the setting that fixes the problem while pluggedin is settings / applications / development / stay awake. I have this turned on and it seems that with stay awake and the wifi keep alive I am good when plugged in.
So, does anyone have thoughts for a similar setting when on battery power?
I can't help to much with battery power since I almost always have mine plugged in.
It's odd that not helping you, once I made that chance I stopped having my Wifi turn itself off (not sleep, off, and the tablet would need to be reset a lot).
Sorry that wasn't much help.
Having this problem as well. Anyone know how to fix?
If you notice other weird stuff happening in the future you may need to repartition your internal memory. Mine started with similar flubs and progressed to never remembering logins online. I had to login to xda every time I turned my device back on. Keep this in mind, about 30% of people need to reformat.

"WiFi stay alive" will help you!

can you give some info as to how one would go about doing this?
For what its worth, might help to set a fixed IP address. I often got a problem with Wifi not being able to reconnect because it got stuck on "getting an IP address" and failed to do so. I seem to remember it disabled the connexion to that AP after too many tries on my Nexus One.
On my g tablet, I was having what seemed to be the same problem, so I did the same thing and it seems stable since. Granted I didn't toy with it as much as I did on the N1, but I wouldn't be supprised if it were a general Android problem.
Anyways, its free to try.
The wireless uses a lot of power. When the tablet "sleeps", it should go into a power saving mode. Disabling the wireless is a feature, not a bug.
Either way how can I keep the wifi signal on so when i wake my g tab up the wifi is ready to go and does not have to reconnect?
anyone have anything to help with this?
I am not sure, but it seems to me that downloaded apps can play with wifi this way, as long as they have rights to "access internet, modify and bla-bla-bla".
I am having same problem after sleep. And it was not present from the beginning. It may starts after I upload some app. I will play with this after coming back home.
yes please let us know thank you!

When my tablet is plugged in and it goes to sleep, the Wifi also disconnects, so I don't think this is a feature any more than the screen angle issue is a "privacy feature." I've never had an Android device that powered down connectivity when the screen goes off, that totally negates the notification features. You basically have a comatose tablet after a few minutes of the screen being off.
I don't think the Xoom or Galaxy Tab have this problem, so there's definitely an issue. Sadly, I might be sending mine back to TigerDirect as faulty because of this.
I have this problem too. As others have said, the problem isnt that the wifi turns off when the tablet sleeps. The problem is the last connected access point gets disabled so when you wake, you have to go into settings and tell it to connect again.
In my case, it happens most of the time, but not always. My Android phone doesnt have this problem.
I did a factory reset, then used nvFlash to restore, and then did a fresh install of Vegan (thought it did the same on every other 2.2 ROM I tried). I didn't install any apps, and the problem still occurs. Tried using Wifi Fixer, and the problem still occurs (though on the bright side, it does reconnect about 10 seconds or so after waking).
I'm out of ideas. I hate to send this thing back because it's the most fun piece of tech I've had in years, but a comatose Android device is a dealbreaker Going to try a GB ROM, and then I give up.
I've got the same kind of issue. I lose my PSA key in my wireless settings every time and have to re-enter it.
I installed the Vegan GB ROM (along with pershoot's kernel), and the wifi stays on if you choose "Never" for wifi sleep (you have to hit the menu button and choose "Advanced" when you're in the wifi settings). Only problem is, the GB ROMs, while zippy, are a little raw right now, and my Launcher Pro GMail widget doesn't work
I'm going to try one of the 2.2 ROMs again today along with pershoot's Froyo kernel to see if it makes a difference.
Ok, YMMV, but I am using Calkukin's ROM with pershoot's kernel (was using Clemsyn's before), with wifi set to never sleep, and my wifi doesn't sleep any more. I left my phone and tab here at work while I went out for lunch (felt naked ...), and came back about 45 mins later, woke the tab, and wifi was still connected, without that "looks connected, oh the icon is now disconnected, oh it's back again!" bit.
I still receive notifications and email, and widgets update. Guess I'm keeping it

data sometimes doesn't turn on without rebooting first

Here's an issue I've had for quite awhile, but it's been so intermittent I haven't taken the time to write about it until now.
Sometimes after I haven't turned on the "data" network on my phone for a few days, I'll find it won't turn on at all until I reboot the phone.
I don't use data that often, I just keep wifi on most of the time. The data allowance on my phone plan is extremely limited (only 100mb) so I keep it off unless I need it. Since I can go for days without turning it on, sometimes I'll find out that it just doesn't turn on at all (the box is checked but it doesn't connect) until I've rebooted the phone. Once it's back up it connects to the data no problem.
I've been on CM7 for the last month and GingerLOL before that, and this has happened on both ROMs. That makes me think it's a hardware issue, but I thought I'd check here first in case anyone else has had this happen to them. I'd also really rather not have to go through the trouble of setting the phone back to stock and unrooting it (that's possible, right?) before I make a warranty claim.
So, has anyone had this issue on their phone?
Thought I'd try bumping this thread since nobody responded to it the first time.
I've since upgraded to CM9 but the issue persists, if I don't use data for a couple days then it won't turn on. The toggle will say "on" but the icon never appears in the notification bar. Am I really the only one this happens to?
Does leaving data on drain power when you're using wifi?

instead of rebooting, use airplane mode.
it will be faster!

I'll try that next time it happens, thanks.

[Q] WiFi Disconnects Regularly

Hi,
I just bought a Sony Tablet S, amazing device. The only problem I'm having is that when the tablet is idle, or the screen shuts down, the WiFi gets disconnected and it doesn't reconnect untill I open the WiFi panel in the settings app.
Now before you guys jump to conclusions, yes, I changed the WiFi disconnect policy to "Never (uses more battery power)". That hasn't helped at all.
Any ideas? Is this just with Sony S or a generic Honeycomb thing? Tablet hasn't been rooted as yet.
Try Advanced Wifi Lock Free. It works well with my tablet.
This issue seems to be a bug in Tablet S. I hope they'll fix it in the ICS release
Yes, already discuss here...
You need to install a must have application...
Advanced Wifi Lock
https://market.android.com/details?...DEsIm9wb3RlY2guYWR2YW5jZWR3aWZpbG9ja2ZyZWUiXQ..
Worked
Thanks for the app recommendation. It's working...so far .
I bought my Tablet S 2 days ago.
Though I have heard of this issue before, my new tablet does not have this problem, maybe Sony has fixed the bug.
p.s. I changed the wifi disconnect setting to Never.
I started using wifi advanced lock a couple weeks ago and it works great! Much better than making sure the screen stays on during all your downloading
...Although I've noticed a massive change in battery life. Typically I was always getting 7-8 hours of screen on (gaming) time out of it, with up to an additional 24 hours of time with it on standby.
Now I got about 13 hours standby and 4.5 hours screen on time with wifi constantly on.
All I'm saying is to have a widget for turning on/off wifi quickly, and leave it off when it's not in use. I didn't think that wifi made THAT much of a difference..but apparently it does lol (and that was still without autosync on either)
I uninstalled that and use spare parts instead. Advanced wifi lock was horrid with my battery grrr
I think is normal, because if you put your tablet in standby is because you're not using them so why you need wifi on?
When you turn on again the wifi will reconnect auto again
WPS Wifi Lock
I had the same issue when connecting at my house, If you have a WPS enabled routter, connect to you access point using WPS. At keeps the signal locked.

[Q] WiFi locks turning on, cell signal lost (sometimes comes back, or needs reboot)

Hello, folks!
I have a rooted I9100 (Android 4.0.3 stock from Vivo, baseband I9100VILP3, kernel 3.0.15-I9100VJLP7-CL371396 [email protected] #3, compilation IML74K.VJLP7, CSC I9100UVILP3).
Sometimes I have problems turning on WiFi, it keeps always turning on and neither become active nor allow me to turn it off again. I then need to reboot phone to fix it (when it reboots, WiFi comes turned on and gets on normally).
Another problem I have with it is that sometimes (average of 4 - 5 times a day) phone loses registration with carrier. It completely loses* signal and shows a "prohibited" icon where signal strength is shown at status bar. (Edit) Sometimes it comes back again in a few seconds and sometimes it stays at that state, making me have to reboot it to fix the problem (turning on and off airplane mode doesn't work; in fact, with registration lost and trying to use airplane mode, it doesn't turn off and only fixes with reboot).
*Actually, it doesn't lose signal (can be seen in "settings - about phone - state" screen uploaded), but only unregisters from carrier.
(Edit: screen/phone language is Brazilian Portuguese)
I've downloaded another modem driver but never had time to test it.
I don't know if both problems can have the same cause, but both of them are very annoying (especially signal loss) and I'd like to make some tries to fix them, so if anyone knows what can I do (even data collection to investigate them), your help is very appreciated.
Thanks
Additional test (ServiceMode)
When I was in the forum to post this thread, I've noticed this other thread and I've decided to use ServiceMode code (*#0011#) to investigate further at the next time my cell lose signal. Unfortunately, it showed absolutely nothing. Literally nothing (just "ServiceMode" caption and no text on the screen below).
I just spent the time to post this because I know that, even if it has shown no information (on screen), maybe it still can be a clue for the cause of the problem.
Thanks
Pls help!
Does anyone have some light to shed on this case?
Please, I do really need to fix it, at least the signal loss problem.
Thanks.
Same Issue in the US on Tmobile
Mine started doing this just a day or two ago. Exact same issue. I can kind of operate on the EDGE network but 4G fails, only WiFi seems to work. T-mobile doesn't seem to have a fix for it.
Changed to MIUI
I've just changed to MIUI (reflashed modem also – now it is ZSLPE instead of previous VILP3).
I still have issues with carrier register loss, but until now it always reconnected after a few seconds. Maybe it is a carrier issue and not a phone one.
I don't turn on WiFi a lot, but all times I've tested it, it worked well.
Another thing I've noticed with this change is that battery temperature while charging used to reach 48°C (118°F) or even 50°C (122°F) while battery level was low (less than 50%), but now it stayed around 35°C (95°F), which is completely acceptable.

WiFi Drop Out Problems

Hi All I have the Mate 20 Pro and absolutely loving it apart from the below problem.
WiFi keeps dropping out. It's definitely nothing to do with the wireless router as all other devices working perfectly and my previous SAMSUNG S7 never had any issues they only started when I got this new phone.
Unfortunately its causing serious issues for me as I can't get data connection downstairs and rely on WiFi.
I've read others have problems and apparently Hawai cut corners with the WiFi and put a poor quality device inside?
Is there anything that can be done or is this definitely a hardware problem and something I just have to live with I. E. Not being able to use it on WiFi?
It shows full bars on the WiFi status symbol top left but will connect one minute and the next minute can't even load a new page, Facebook comments, or will just pause and start spinning on a video.
Bump!! Same problems! My Galaxy S7 and S8 always worked flawless with notifications and internet connection switching between wifi and 4G. Mate 20 pro drops out. Now also remembering my old Ascend Mate 7 did the same. Huawei problem, but is there a solution?
I have tried various settings in the wireless and developer settings no luck. I cant seem to find the usual android settings to keep wifi on always...
Did you guys check under Settings/Battery/More battery Settings if "Stay connected when device sleeps" is ON?
Pretty stupid to hide it there (Samsung had it in the right place under WiFi settings) but whatever.
My Wifi NEVER disconnects at home or work and I DO get emails even if the app is set to pull every 30 min (so it wakes up properly and pulls data). Plus unlike my old S7Edge, WiFi reported power drain is always below 1%...so negligible.
I've noticed Youtube keeps losing connection when using Chromecast
