first and foremost i would like to say that i LOVE the community yolu guys got going on here, i am a recent switcher from iphone, to the dell streak 5 and it was one of the best switches ive ever made, now i just have a few questions, i have figured out pretty much everything but the baseband thing i am wondering about, currently i am toronto canada and i have a rogers dell streaK 5 running on streakdroid 1.9, setcpu overclocked to 1.19ghz and 318 baseband, now i been reading around, now should i update to 351 as people were saying or should i stay bhere on 318? also i noticed when i got this phone i didnt check to see which version i already had, are the earlier versions of dj steves streak droid factory overclocked in the kernal? if so which version was it and what was it clocked at by default? i am just wondering if i am getting the full potential out of my phone, also which launcher is everyones favorite? also is there an app to see which apps are taking up how much CPU, and not just ram?
thank you so much in advance
-Davey
There are no stock overclocked roms as fast as I know. If you just got the phone and it was brand new, it likely had a baseband newer than 318.

First off davey, welcome aboard. To answer your questions...
1. If you're running Streakdroid 1.9, DJSteve recommends updating to a specific baseband. The link for this baseband he provides in the Streakdroid 1.9 thread.
2. I do not know if earlier versions of Streakdroid were overclocked. My best guess is that they were. My opinion is that you do not gain much by overclocking in any event. I have a Streak with a rooted 351. The phone runs a heck of a lot faster just by ditching Dell's Stage UI, the Dell Sync program, and a few other programs Dell put into the ROM.
3. I believe you are using the phone to its full potential.
4. Watchdog Lite can tell you what percentage of CPU cycles are taken up by a particular app.

Most appreciated with your response, and i thank you kindly for welcoming to the community, the baseband 351 everyone is saying is better on battery life and wifi connection, that sort of thing, so i appreciate you leading me twoard there, question though, the QDL utility or whatever it is that you use to flash the baseband, where might i obtain it? when i bought the phone , fastboot was already on there so luckily i dont have to install that myself, but im not sure where to get the utility for my computer so that i may update the baseband once in the fastboot mod, now to get rid of the dell stage UI, do i have to completly redo my rom or might i be able too just uninstall it somehow without having to revamp my stuff again, because i know if i nandroid the backup that it will still include the dell stage ui since i have that during the nandroid backup, again thank you so much for your help!, and thanks again for the tip on the app download i have been looking for such things! , also one more question, how might i also remove the dell sync program? is that also available through the actual OS?
Much love!
-David
It should be in the development forum, but I would recommend doing a search for it on the forums because I don't know exactly where it is. I personally have no reason to use it, because I don't use StreakDroid (rooted 351 with Stage UI and bloatware removed).
You can use a program like Titanium Backup or Root Explorer to remove the .apk files for the programs you want to remove.

and no its not a joke i do actualyl have this running on my streak. stock android 2.2 froyo - using dells eclair kernel source, as you can see its not usable (no wifi/bt/phone etc which we expected). working on gettign at least 3g going now.
great to see evidence this thing is moving if we wait on dell it wont happen for ages
but is 2.2 froyo based on the same kernnell as 2.1?
not really but dells kernel is a mash up or alot of differnet kernels including froyos

its a different kernel. there is 2.1 eclair and the new froyo 2.2. Dell made their own 2.1 Eclair development platform and drivers and some additions to the kernel to support the hardware. Most other company's use the android Eclipse developer platform.
some great enhancements in the 2.2 kernel is the support for the flash-light (the leds on the back, not this not-wanted screen lighters) , a speedboost of nearly 10% in some cases and a new support library for social networking.
some info on new stuff added http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-2.2-highlights.html
edit: did i allmost forget the flash 10.1 support.
more edit: 2.1 official seems to come out in a few weeks up till december. 2.2 scheduled for februari
yup add a boot time of about 10 seconds too and its is SILLY fast running, smooth as silk
awesome!
Now what can we do to help? also is it just you work on this or others pitching in?
and if you don't mind, can you write up a guide or is it similar to the other devices of how to build AOSP?
I'm trying to learn but dont have much programming and dev background so its like starting from scratch!

Great work. Can't wait until a full release available. All of the efforts are appreciated.
just droped linpack onto this built, scored 34
How about framerate limit removal? I saw a video where removing it would dramatically improve input response time.

repeating the same message over and over isnt going to help. its NOT a simple thing to sort out framerate and since ive still yet to find any info on how they managed it on the evo (tech info not simple videos) i dont even know where to start

Indeed, there are bigger things to worry about, like all the sensors, drivers, etc. I personally find the framerate quite acceptable at 30fps, only thing it really hurts is benchmarks... is the actual screen designed to refresh at 60Hz anyways? I can run GlxGears at 1000fps, in that regard my computer is uncapped, its obviously impossible for me to view it that way... another mention of this will get someone reported.

For anyone who doesn't want to spend 10 minutes searching.
There's a good reason that forcing novice users to search for 10minutes is a good thing and posting direct links isn't
The 2.2 isn't ready for mass consumption yet;
and if a whole load of people install it who don't really know what they're doing, then everyone involved is going to spend less time getting 2.2 working and more time getting those novices streaks back to working order.

The embedded froyo 2.2 that comes with qdl too, does that work perfectly fine and flawless with AT&T dell streak? or are there some things that just don't work on there?
I have an ATT Streak and used QDL with no issues. After playing with it for a while, I took the plunge and upgraded to DJ_Steve's Streakdroid 1.5.1

Used the stock software for a while and thought it was decent. Went to DJ Steve's 1.5.1 and realized how misguided I actually was. It turned what I thought was a worthless device on 1.6 and a decent device on 2.2 to absolute phone/tablet nirvana on DJ Steve's 1.5.1. I will never use AT&T stock software ever again for any purpose. It's shameful that they can spend such massive amounts of time with the resources they have and only come up with that while DJ Steve can work in his free time and come up with something that rapes AT&T development. Shameful.

certainly not trying to defend the Death Star here, but thought I might correct your thinking...
ATT doesnt make roms
Perhaps not, but they sure are damn good at delaying them, and then removing features (tether) and then making up for it with useless bloat that sometimes can't be removed without cooking up your own ROM anyway...
F U AT&T
I am just glad I took the plunge with the QDL method and didn't wait for the "official" from them. It has been pushed back to January now. I am using the "stock" 2.2 and not sure I am going to Steve's, even though I appreciate his efforts VERY much.
QDL is automated? Sounds good. Does your GPS work on AT&T? Specifically with navigation in Google Maps.
Use QDL, then update from 309 (which is what is on qdl?) to the 318 version, which for me was much faster than 309

I have updated to the posted 2.2 (318) rom and everything went perfectly. I originally updated with QDL first and then to 318 (QDL put on a strange build I could not locate in searches).
Everything is good (I don't like stage ui thought), Except. . . the bluetooth dial app does not "hear" anything or it is just plain broken. I can use voice dial with the phone alone, but if I connect the bluetooth and do the long press (Jawbone Icon) to get to voice dialing, it starts up and either crashes (force close) or it sits there "listening" until it times/errors out.
The error is LogService has stopped working process (com.oem)
I have seen posts on other forums from people with different phones having the same issues but NO fix or work around.
It seems to me it must be something in the hook between the bluetooth service and the voice dial app.
Maybe someone has found a fix or a working replacement for voice dial that works over bluetooth, assuming its the app and not the bluetooth services.
sad owner of Dell Streak Droid 1.6 now happy 2.2 thanks to XDA Dev
I was ready to return my streak back to bestbuy until a friend of my show me this site. he uses an HTC so he is very good at Droid, Im a newbie by the way. Just switch from iPhone 4 to Dell Streak and Im not coming back. I was tired of waiting for Dell update so we decided to try to get the 2.2 from UK and Oh! man, we were amaze how this new software works on my Streak. I love it! Thanks guy! now you have a new member. by the way Im a business owner of a pc place Im also a computer programmer and Technology guru so I'll be sending many people your way. Thanks again.
Glad you kept it! I was pretty happy with 1.6, but when at&t/Dell opted to "delay" the 2.2 update (I think it was more at&t than Dell), I said screw it, let's give it a try. Updated to v309, then got v318 on and it's like a completely different device!
just done flashing. not sure which path to go.. official Dell 2.2 or Dj 1.5.2.
Dell is easier but heard Dj is a cool one.
I'm on 309, haven't update to 318 yet.
What are the benefits really?
Bug fixes mainly.

I've heard some people have had battery problems, wireless problems etc with 318. What is FC?
I am currently 1.6.0 and I love it. the only problem I have is that a couple of games won't install any more. I tried 1.6.1 but it went nuts with constant FC. But I didn't do a factory reset on it before I install it. I read on a couple of forums that the rom does work better if you do this. It did for me too. So I wonder if I should try a higher streakdroid rom for better result.
My question is; what is the best streakdroid rom? Is the highest one the best one or the more experimental one?
Each one brings new fixes and sometimes new issues. I'm using 1.7.0 and love it. I did a refash to stock 309 then upgraded to 318 then 1.7.0 before in did any configuration. Zero issues for me I'm not using the perfmod btw
Dell Streak powered by StreakDroid 1.7.0
I upgraded from the stock 1.6 to Steve's 1.6.0 rom a few weeks ago and I couldn't be happier. It's such a massive improvement that it was worth it to spend a few days reading about it first and risk bricking my phone to install it.
Since then, however, I try to keep up to date with the newer versions and there are so many people with issues like the boot loops, instability, FCs, lost wifi, etc. that I keep asking myself if it's worth it to upgrade. I don't want to spend hours reinstalling everything as well. This is a 400$ device after all, and thechnically it's not under warranty anymore so is the reward really worth the potential risks?
Can anybody share their impressions with 1.6.1 and 1.7.0 versus 1.6.0?
Thanks Archeob, you worded it better than my what I was trying to say. I love 1.6 too. I tried the 1.6.1 but it went crazy with FC's. But maybe again because I didn't do the factory reset.
So a a list of con's and pro's per rom would be great if available?

I did that thanks. I am now on 1.7 and some of the apps that didn't on 1.6.0 do now. Till now I am pretty happy with the 1.7

What do you mean work? Work through camera app? Work with fring? The ffc works fine in 1.7.0 its apps like fringe that need to update to work with it. Btw ooVoo works fine with the ffc.
Dell Streak powered by StreakDroid 1.7.0
My ffc also didn't on 1.6.0. Not even with oovoo. It does work on 1.7 for me. But I didn't figured yet how to get the ffc to work with Tango. Seems that this is working for some people.
Well I searched the forums and havent really found anyone with this problem so here it goes. I bricked my dell streak seriously by tampering with the files in streakflash trying to get it back to 1.6. So I have the Besybuy insurance so I took it back and they sent it off and will be sending me a new streak. When they get my new streak in, it will more than likely be on 2.2. I hate 2.2 on this device and really want 1.6, therefore my question being, is it possible to downgrade a new streak thats 2.2 out of the box to 1.6?
don't do it, simply flash 2.3.3 REV 2.1 international - it's fast, stable and nice
awww but i want 1.6 lol
What don't you like about 2.2?

Thats how i bricked my fist streak lol. anf i dont like 2.2 task bar and i dont like stage widgets and i dont like the icons lol im srry but 2.2 just not for me. I get my new streak on monday im hoping against hope that it will be 1.6.
Don't count on it. It's been almost a year since the unlocked Streaks were upgraded to 2.2. You can (and should) change the launcher from Stage UI to something like Go Launcher, where you can skin the icons. That should eliminate two of your concerns. The taskbar is however, a foolish pipe dream, especially when you lose far more by doing the downgrade than you would staying with what you have and changing the launcher. Think about it.
One more thing. That 2.2.2 taskbar that you're so keen to complain about is the default taskbar that is in virtually every Android phone on the planet. They may have some subtle tweaks such as color in a HTC device, or annoyances like having the carrier name pop up and obscuring the icons every thirty seconds thanks to executive meddling (phones from AT&T have that annoyance). Despite those small changes, functionally every taskbar is identical. Besides, Dell ditched their taskbar modifications for a reason in doing the upgrade, and it's simply that the newer versions of Android did what the 1.6 taskbar did, without requiring extensive modification.
Thats why I like 1.6 on dell streak so much because there's nothing else like it out there. I am aware that every 2.2 is virtually the same on every device that's one reason why dell streak's 1.6 was something special to me because of its uniqueness. Then you might say well why did you upgrade in the first place lol ( I guess I just wanted to have the latest thing i dunno). But I got tired of 2.2 fast and just want the old FW back. But I guess that's just the price I pay for upgrading haha and thanks guys for all your feedback!
We believe it to be special. Problem was that Dell released the Streak with ancient software compared to the standard (1.6 vs. 2.1), didn't do any marketing on it and expected it to sell like one of their PCs.
As to the bar, I never had it on my device as I had 2.2.2, 347 out of the box. But while Dell came up with a nifty solution to 1.6's shortcomings, their energy would have been better spent in putting a more current ROM on the device for release. Because of their choices the Streak has a permanent aura of being old and slow to catch up to those in the know, and a permanent aura of obscurity to those who don't.
Got my new dell streak today from best buy (using my best buy insurance) and it came with 1.6 installed ....Only thing since gmail and facebook have cracked down on 3rd parties is it possible to use the email and facebook widgets from dell 1.6?
Anyone know how to get the dell facebook widget working on 1.6?
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
Unfortunately I don't think you can get the widgets working in 1.6. Those widgets are for 2.1 and up. You'll have to use the browser for both.
I have everything set up, fixed the install file so it doesnt overwrite my custom recovery, got streakmod recovery on, did a nandroid backup
basically im all set, ready to go
but i am not sure what ROM to download... I would like a fast one, with features, but i would also like simplicity, like one that i just have to flash and be done, not go back and flash stuff its missing or needs through fastboot or whatever (because my computer doesnt work well right now with fastboot... well it works fine, but when i try to use CMD it always has an error, thus i cant put in commands by hand!)
so ya, all the roms ive looked at all had little things like
"YOU must flash these AMSS & DSP to go with it..
If you don't know how to flash AMSS & dsp then DO NOT TRY THIS " (from streakdroid 2.3 thread)
i dont want to deal with that crap, i installed CM7 on my defy, was simple, only thing i had to add was Gapps, which was installed in the same manner as the flash, so that was ok
any help appreciated! if i dont get a reply soon ill probably just take a chance (not that it ever seems to work out for me lmfao)
You should try Longhorn 1.1, or 1.2 later this weekend. If you already are on Froyo there is no need to flash the 2 files unless you want to. Each ROM is different and it all depends on what you will use it for. Good thing is, most ROMS you can flash them over other roms.

I considered longhorn but I went with simple, I like it, seems 20 times snappier and faster than streak on stock 2.2 so that's already a big deal, but I would like more features, would streakdroid be a pain in the ass? Honestly, if you're gonna keep your Streak, then you might as well get your computer set up to correctly run fastboot commands and adb because sooner or later you will need and do the required reading... I know it seems overwhelming at the moment, but once you get it right the first time, you'll be banging your head against the wall wondering why you didn't get it the first time.
Plus you'll be able to change up ROMs like changing your socks if you like once you get the hang of it, IF you want to, it'll be just that easy

So far there isn't any streak ROMs that have all of the features that cyanogen have, loosely with the exception of DJ Steve's Froyo ROMs. Those are the only ones that Can be customized as far as I know. But even those do not have many extra features. Hopefully soon we should have more options for our ROMs.
