Thanks XDA for helping fix sis' Eris. - Droid Eris General

My sister's Eris wouldn't boot (boot loop hell). She brought it to Verizon and they told her its broken and she needed a new phone. Her 2 year contract is not up yet, so she isn't qualified for an upgrade.
Luckily she told me about it and so I gave it a shot trying to fix the Eris. I'm usually only on the Viewsonic GTablet forum, so know nothing about the Eris. After about a couple of hours going through a number of posts on XDA >HTC Eris, I figured it out that for some reason, the Eris' recovery ROM (PB100IMG.zip) was missing on her SD card, not sure how this happened. I downloaded the PB100IMG.zip file on XDA, copied it to the SD card, booted up recovery mode, and told it to reloaded Eclair. And the phone is now functional.
And all this happened without me posting anything, this forum is awesome. I'm gonna try to root it to get CWM and maybe one of the xtr roms on her Eris next. Thanks to everyone that put in the time and effort to make XDA an awesome resource for Android devices.
TLTR: Vz told sis that her Eris was fubar'd. I fixed her Eris thanks to awesome XDA community.

You say that, but there is another example of a potential brick that happened from a clockwork recovery on androidforums: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/350856-htc-eris-ruu-wont-run.html#post2795130
I don't recall seeing that from a phone with Amon_RA as the recovery - if there are examples, there are far fewer. Root methods that put Amon_RA on the Eris seem to be much safer. (Running clockwork as a flash from Amon_RA seem to work just fine; I do this all of the time now, because I prefer Clockwork's data wipes and Nandroid backup procedures.)

[WARNING] SD Card Partitioning

do not be an idiot like me and use the partition sd card option in rom manager. It will mess up the phone's master boot record and you will have to rewrite the original one in order for voodoo kernels or anything that modifies the boot record to work properly.
once again don't be an idiot like me! Thank you
I don't know what to say to this... I think this is why you aren't getting any replies. Lol.
good thing this was put in development. Hey dev's, did this help you in creating your newest rom/kernel?

If you do this to your sd card, will the kernel not rewrite the MBR when you reboot? Like the first time you flash a Voodoo kernel.

Uhm... in light of your signature, you do realize this is the Verizon Samsung Fascinate forum, right? Not the Sprint HTC Hero forum.
Because this post does not apply to HTC phones. Or Motorola phones. Or LG phones. Or any phone that isn't a Samsung Galaxy S.

bootlooping after fail full ruu rom flash question?

so i tried to flash the full rooted ruu rom via hboot, i had it sitting on my table with the batt door off and knocked it on the floor ( accident ofcourse ) and the batt came out halfway during the process so now it goes into the htc screen then blank htc screen then blank and i cant get into cwr so my question is can i salvage it or am i f**ked?
Have you tried hbooting to recovery? Volume up and power down when the phone boots up.
cant keep it in cwr long enough to do anything, keeps rebooting and when it does go into cwr it says something like cant mount cache i think

+1. That's exactly what would have worked. I know it's too late for the lad now, but for future users...
If you're ever stuck in a boot-loop and can't hboot into recovery, you'll need to copy and past the PGIMG05.ZIP file onto the root of your SD Card. This will be about a 200-400 meg file and would usually be a stock rooted RUU or stock signature RUU. After it's on the root of your SD, make sure it's the only PGIMG05.zip file on there! Then start the phone by holding down power + volume up. This will force the phone to hboot the PGIMG05 file which will get you past the boot-loop.
For some it's a good idea to have insurance too.
You can get a replacement minus the deductible if you "lose" your phone.
Just make certain you call VZW as soon as you lose it.
I don't suggest selling the phone for parts and saying it's lost, but I'm sure others have done this to cover their deductible.
Those without insurance...I have heard people have had great success with warranty replacement when using over the phone support when the phone doesn't boot or bootloops.
Since you send the phone back to VZW by mail, their replacement standards are much lower than dealing with their retail and face to face support.

I'm new to this, just rooted my thunderbolt the week before last (have rooted a total of 4 phones though since and created my own bootimage with sound and everything! lol!), and that's what came to mind when I read the original post but I didn't "know" for sure. Thanks for confirming it. This stuff is fascinating to me. I like to understand what is going on. I'd like to someday write my own rom. I have the Fascinate and I love it.
But for the last few days I have tried many different roots, all work until I want to go into clockwork. What are the correct steps from step one to loading clockwork and load a rom, preferably miui. I had the og droid and was great at booting and loading rom's but the fascinate is throwing me for a loop.
Soo with that said I would like to make a request for anyone willing to do it, please show/tell me how to do this. I have seen posts on new roms, but not rooting updates and etc.

CWM is going the way of WebOS. Yes, that makes me happy. There are far superior alternate recoveries out there. CWM has lived its life in the spotlight but the likes of TWRP and others are slamming CWM to the ground release after release, update after update. Just throwing this out there.

hrm.
I use recovery to factory reset, wipe cache, and flash roms. I'd wager that's what 95% of people use them for. What is there left to be done in recovery development that can slam another recovery to the ground, when it does the 3 things everyone uses it for?
Aside from the dead battery charging issue in CWM, the only thing I see in Amon that's handy is rebooting back to bootloader.
I'm sure I must be missing something - something I don't need, but is apparently monumental?

CWM Recovery discussion

I saw in NilsP's rom thread that people have been working on clockwork mod recovery to see and get it working. I read that with a file copy and an advanced setting you can get backups to work. The main problem being the infamous charging bug.
Here is what is posted in that thread.
punman said:
I wasn't aware of this but when you plug the phone in, it boots what looks like a mini-recovery kernel. I suspect something with this isn't supporting the battery charge. I am going to flash back to Amon Ra and see what the differences are.
Just select "backup to external SD card" in ROM Manager Settings. You might have to enable "advanced settings" to get the option.

OK here is where I am as memories come back.
If you select backup to external and set progress off it does not actually turn off progress unless you copy the hideprogress file from internal to external. The bad part is the backup hangs if you don't copy the file.
When you select install ROM from SD Card it shows what is on the internal card to select not the external.
I have not tried a restore yet but I remember if you do it from RM it deletes the boot (kernel) but can't restore it due to s-on. Gonna test that in a minute.
EDIT: Backup and restore worked fine after copying the hideprogress file
EDIT: Just had to select internal from the menu when selecting install ROM from SD Card in RM

Yep. I recovered my original GB after using an early CleanROM ICSE ROM. I think I used Scott's CleanFlash tool to flash back the correct kernel for GB.
All my recoveries have backed up flawlessly since, but I am currently only running stock rooted. Haven't tried recovering any ICS backups.

And since I bought ROM Manager while using my DInc I'd prefer to use CWM. It's a reasonable, personal choice and I've never let my batteries fully discharge, so never had charging issues.
And I don't avoid full discharge because I use CWM, I avoid full discharge because it's actually bad for the batteries.

That's not to say there's anything wrong with the N64. I still love it and play it with my friends almost every weekend. LOL. Some get and some don't. It works the same as cwm just without issues. It's amazing and annoying to see people posting almost daily on charging issues yet they refuse to use amon ra because they are comfortable with cwm. I to was hesitant to use it at first but quickly felt like I was in a familiar place once installed. My Rezound has never seen cwm. I think I mentioned earlier that I had no issues charging. But I am also not saying that Amon Ra is bad. Just that I have a preference and that I know how to handle/avoid the pitfalls.
Interestingly, there were many in the DInc threads who didn't like CWM or ROM Manager, but no one there made snarky comments about personal choice... (not talking about you, snowride)
I think any CWM thread will just devolve like a Sense thread will. At least in the Rezound forums.
