[Q] Rooting Samsung Galaxy I500 - Fascinate Android Development

Im having problems, with the root everytime I try to update the phone. It starts up the it gives me an error. I've also tried fixing the signature and still nothing. Does anyone have idea of what might be wrong with it.

Did you remember to wipe the intake manifolds? Also make sure the flux capacitor is set to "low".

Ok I've rooted my phone with Z4root. I've got rom manager and Superuser. Now once it's been rooted it says that it will reboot and update. Well every time it goes to update it will begin then it comes up with an error saying failed to get signature.

You need to install clockworkmod so you can use custom recovery to "update things"

Do you know how to use Odin? If so, odin this recovery: http://download758.mediafire.com/1xdue0d5bugg/06al8prkgj29gps/cwm-recovery-ALL-3-30-FIX.tar this recovery can flash anything. Use this to update

Here is the link for odin: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7223192/RootSF/Odin3 v1.3.exe Download and install it on your PC. Once it is installed, open it. Then turn off your phone and pull the battery out. Hold the volume down button and at the same time plug your phone into the PC. It should go into download mode. Find the PDA button (in odin) and click it. ONLY USE THE PDA BUTTON!!! Then find the linked file I gave you earlier and select it for PDA. Then hit start. When you see a green "pass", unplug the cable and put the battery back in and hold down both the volume buttons and power button at the same time. Hold them until you see the samsung logo. You will then boot into cwm recovery. From there you can flash whatever rom or kernel that you have already put on your SD card.

Don't use rom manager on the fascinate.....that's a problem

Wow, way to NOT answer the guy's question. He's trying to, what I can see, do an OTA update, which WILL fail if you're rooted.
You HAVE to remove root if you're trying to do an OTA update.
Also, Stock Samsung Recovery will fail on unsigned zips. you would need the hacked 2e recovery, or just flash ClockworkMod with Odin.

No but seriously, what exactly are you trying to do with your fascinate/i500? Trying to put a new version of android on it? Just trying to get root? We have fairly standard ways of doing things now-a-days depending on what you're doing.

I can not connect to my i500 with USB. I have the issue I have read about where connecting to a laptop only charges the device. I have tried every trick I could find and no go. So, Odin and similar methods are out for me. I have root. So, whatever options I have, have to be performered on the device itself. If I could get a recovery to replace stock, that would be a start. Then I could disable signature verification and the like. I could try methods using terminal emulation or something similar. I just know there has got to be a way to do more than root the i500 without using USB! Any suggestions?

3 attempts so far and each time after the firmware downloads and the prime reboots, right after the Android with the gears shows up he turns into an android with an exclamation mark.
Then after a 5 minute boot I get a system message that says:
Post here if you failed too, and solutions you have.
Attempts:
first - Device was nachorooted, root backed up via OTA rootkeeper. FAILED
second - with root disabled via OTA rootkeeper FAILED
third - removed root via viperboy's tool FAILED
fourth - factory reset then update FAILED
fifth - just going to repeat the stock attempts until something looks different
No idea if this would work but maybe use that tool viperboy made to unroot yours and then try (pretty sure it has an unroot option)? Not sure why that would help since rooted users have successfully updated but may be worth a shot.
sorry forgot to mention that was my 3rd attempt

Try another program
Try this program http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=739300
Download it. Exract it. Make sure you have USB Debugging enabled on your phone. Run the one click root application from your pc you've just downloaded. The application will install the update.zip...Then your phone will reboot into recovery. Make sure you click "Reinstall Packages" in recovery. Use Volume keys to move up or down...and the power button to make your selection.

It may be because you are on 2.2. Are you able to use your phone? Or did it get bricked? If so i am totally sorry. But i will be more than glad to help you start from scratch. Now - how do I get CWM?
Check to see if you have the super user app installed. If so then you are rooted. Then proceed by downloading rom manager from the android market. Once rom manager is downloaded "allow" any permissions that it is requesting. Then click on install clockwork recovery. Then look for your device once it tells you to. Then you can reboot to recovery from rom manager or by using the 3 button combo.

Further help
couldn't install Rom Manager since using 2.1 Eclair (not compatible?)
Tried regular way of installing CWM
why is this happening:
I dont think you can flash a recovery CWM from heimdell or odin. Only way i know of is from rom manager. Rom manager should be compatible on 2.1. Are you sure you are rooted. If you don't have the super user app installed well you don't have root access. Super user app shouldve installed automatically once you ran the one click program from earlier. Easiest way to install CWM is from rom manager.
must be your lucky day.
1. download attachment
2. place it on your SDcard
3. rename the attachment to update.zip
4. get to 2e recovery using 3 button combo
5. re-install package, if it goes back to 2e recovery, re-install packages again
6. you should see the green CWM.
7. flash away?
cheers.

and if your ever odin back to JFD again, just go straight to 2e recovery and re-install packages, and flash away, NO ROOT NEEDED.

OK. I am having the same issue. This used to be my phone. Gave it to my mom about 6 months ago. Got her a Sensation XE so she gave it back. It was rooted and running CM7 prior to giving it to her. Flashed it back to Eclair via Odin, updated to Froyo via Keiss than gave it to her.
Went to root via the update.zip process and low and behold got E:signature verification failed. Tried Super One Click - same result.
Odin'd back to 2.1. Can't get Rom Manager on the phone. Not in the market. Downloaded the apk and get a parsing issue. BTW, root via update worked on 2.1. Decided it was a bad flash via Odin so I repeated the whole process just to get stuck back at can't root with 2.2 and can't get access to CWM via 2.1.
Sooooooo...... now what? Never had an issue rooting ANY phone so far.
What gives and help!?
If you want to root your phone, click on my signature and download the SuperUser.zip, rename it to Update.zip and put it on your internal card. Boot into recovery and hit Reinstall Packages (twice maybe) and then reboot it. You will see a SU icon in the app tray and you will be rooted but still be on 2.1.
If you want CWR recvovery, see 6 posts up. Xtone has it all mapped out for you. Just follow his instructions and you are good to go. Note: If you are using this method, you will need a custom ROM to flash after it reboots from stck (blue) to CWR (green) rocovery.
Koush is not supporting CWR for Eclair anymore so that is why you are seeing it in the market when you are on 2.1
Grabbed the file from your signature. BUT...
Still getting:
-- Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
Any thoughts? Like I said. I have already ran through the steps. Any chance anyone has a link to Rom Manager that is still supported in Eclair? This is irritating in the fact that I can root in 2.1 but not get access to CWM and get access to CWM and NOT root in 2.2. Again, this is just a "putzing around" phone and not a big issue but if someone else is having this issue, it warrents a looksy. I am not new to rooting and I know how to do this it is just taking WAY to long.
Update: Got it. Read the next post for file links and instructions. Ha, this makes me look nooby :-(

SOS: Help a Noob stuck at Samsung screen upon attempt to root

Hello,
Could you pls help a noob with a rooting problem? I attempted to root my ICS AT&T Galaxy Note i-717 using Odin3 v 1.85 and a pda.tar file. Prior to that, I had checked and confirmed the USB drivers are installed (I have Kies software installed on the PC. However, folliwing the succesful flash of pda.tar I got the phone stuck at the Samsung screen. I could still get to the download screen. However, the phone would not go pass that screen. Can you pls tell me what I did wrong/guide me w simple steps on how to fix the phone and finish the root? I have the read many different root treads but I find them confusing. Treads are ponting at different files to be frashed/installed on the phone. Thanks very much.
This happens from time to time...don't worry.
Reboot phone in download mode, connect phone, reflash kernel.
A few things: use stock samsung cable. Use back of computer usb port. Reboot computer before you try again. Re download the kernel to be sure your file is not corrupted. Make sure phone battery is more than 80%.

Stuck at Samsung
I have the same issue tho have tried troubleshooting and could really use some extra help.
Updated to ATT stock ICS update a few months ago. Everything workin fine.
Wanted to root it so I could back everything up not to lose anything when moving to JB.
Rooted by flashing Da_G's pda.tar, reboot, and then flashed 2.3.3.0 TWRP
Noticed it was stuck at Samsung.
Here's where I'm kickin myself because I should have backed it up before all this, but I waited because I figured root doesn't wipe data!
Entered TWRP, backed up.
Now what I've tried to fix it... and failed
1. Reflashed pda.tar about 5 times
2. Found a stock pda "pda-odin-att-stock.tar", flashed (fixed) but it's stock setup and contacts and other google services don't work, lost homescreen icon placement and all other settings.
3. TWRP: Restore all = stuck at Samsung again
4. Repeat 2 and Restore only System
5. Repeat 2 and Restore only Data
6. Repeat 2 and flash pda.tar = boots, but same thing with it all stock, so I restore and it's stuck again.
It's my wife's phone and she has contacts that aren't saved in Google, to-do lists saved in app data files, and to be honest, she said everything better be exactly the same after updating (which I promised it would be since the plan was to root, backup, update, and restore), so I'm kinda trying to save my hide. PLEASE HELP me save my ass ha!
Other things to note: I just rooted a new phone about 30mins prior with the exact same root and TWRP files and it went very smooth, no issues.
Using a Samsung original cable on a laptop. Phone Battery was ~30% when I did all the steps, but since then read that battery should be higher so swapped out to fully charged battery and retried the steps.
Using the root kernel you did, basically flashed a Gingerbread kernel over an ICS rom. (Doesn't work)
Your best bet at this point, is too flash a rooted ICS build from bigfau ...(located in the super thread stock section)
Just flash using TWRP ....BUT !!!
make sure you wipe the dalvik cache, system cache, and system before flashing the rooted ICS build.
Once the rom is flashed, you will be stock and rooted.
Regarding data you have lost with no backup....start begging forgiveness now ....it's gone ....g

Wouldn't I be able to just flash an ICS Kernel to undo the GB kernel and set things straight? Or is the whole thing ruined already?
I have the data/app and data/data files. If all's really lost, I'll just put JB on it. If I copy the data/app and data/data files onto the new image will all the apps with their settings/data be restored at least?
Yes, flash the correct kernel.
I think what happened to me is the OS got deleted cuz once I flashed a rom I was good to go!

[Q] I have absolutely no signal

So, last night I decided to update to one of the CM 10.1 nightlies. I haven't updated in a while and thought why the heck not? So I used the option built in the Settings app to update. I pressed download and waited for it to finish, then hit install and went to sleep while it installed. When I woke up I had no signal. Not even 2g. No calls, texts, data, you name it. Gone.
So I have spent at least 6 hours re installing old versions and scouring the internet and no one has an issue exactly like mine.
Here's a screenshot of what the settings look like:

This might be an obvious question but have you tried reflashing one of the available modems?

Thanks for the quick reply. No I haven't tried that yet actually. I can't find anything on google. Could you point me in the direction to flashing a modem?

Just flash in recovery. Probably best to use the newer which is the VRALL4. If this doesn't fix it you may want to try a clean flash with a full wipe.

Umm. So it seems this update did a lot more than mess up my data. It completely wiped my Recovery and removed my Play Store completely. I have no way to even flash this modem.

Very odd. What recovery were you using? I'm not on cm 10.1 so I'm not familiar with the updater but did it give you options to wipe any data or caches? And did you reflash gapps after updating?
If you can get a wifi connection you could always try and flash TWRP through the goo manager app. Just a thought.

I get an error when using the goo manager app. It says no current recovery installed. I am seriously ****ing stuck. Just one harmless update has demolished all the stuff on my phone.

You should be able to install recovery from the goo app. Open the all, then hit menu, then install openrecoveryscript. Confirm and see if will flash it.
Had this problem many of times on a gs3.
Calm down, I may be able to help you.
In the settings picture you posted. The my phone number was out of sight.
If the spot said Unknown.
You may be in luck.
But anyways do this either way.
Make sure you back up any thing you don't want to lose.
Boot into download mode.
Flash a stock unrooted official version. I believe this will also flash the modems and radio as well.
Check your signal and phone settings now.
I would expect nothing has changed signal wise.
But if you still have problems you open up dialer and call this phone number
*2767*3855#
Now your phone will cook up some magic and everything will be like the day you opened the box
However if this does not work, I would consider a new sim card (free at Verizon), try and do some more research
Or accept the fact you may have a hardware problem.
Feel free to pm me to let me know how it goes.
God bless the American people.

[Q] RE: Recovery Problem

Hi all.. Quick question.
I've just started the process of trying to root my One Max (international) and everything has gone smoothly with unlocking the bootloader etc, and i've flashed a CWM image to it as my recovery, but once i've rebooted, volume down and select recovery, hit power, it says entering recovery but then screen goes off, waits about 20-30 seconds and boots up as normal.. Is the CWM image file wrong? And if so, can i just redo the process of flashing the rom again the same way, or do i need to uninstall this image before i can? Does any new image not just overwrite?
I'm just a little frustrated at this point because it's now unlocked and tampered yet i have no root access.

Go with twrp it roots the device after first time going through the recovery. I've heard of issued with cwm.

The reason i picked CWM over TWRP was because i'm familiar with it and like the UI.. TWRP just seems too basic looking. But my initial question still remains. Can i simply re-run the process over the top with TWRP or do i need to remove CWM before i can write TWRP to the device?

Ok well i'll give TWRP a go. But do i need a specific .img file? Because when i go onto the TWRP site to get the version i need, it only lists Sprint and Verizon for the One Max. I'm on International so surely need a GSM or Non-US variant surely? Or can i just use the M7 GSM version?
Thanks.

Ok, now i've just redone this procedure exactly the same but with TWRP instead of CWM and it's doing exactly the same thing.. Why does it just go blank after saying "entering recovery" then boot as normal after about 20 secs? I really want root access but can't see how i'm going to get it if my phone won't boot into recovery.

Ok.. I finally figured what was wrong.. The .img was too new a version and clearly my phone didn't like it.. So i used an older version and it's done the whole process perfectly. So to anyone else having the same problem, try an older version.
Ok, hang on.. It seems i might not be rooted.. I've installed TWRP, done my Nandroid backup installed Superuser and a few root checkers and one of them said i was rooted, while the others couldn't gain access, same with Superuser and SuperSU, they both say they can't access binaries etc.. Now i assumed once the phone said tampered, unlocked and had TWRP installed that it was rooted.. Is this the case? I have attached some thumbnails of various screengrabs so someone can tell me if i am or if something has gone wrong.. When i did it on my DHD it was never this hard to root..
