Hey XDA,
I have been a lurker for a while now and absolutely LOVE this place. I originally found it because the NOOK was my first android device and that forum was more than helpful. Recently I bought a Thunderbolt and decided I needed to root for various reasons including Netflix, Roms, etc...
After following the root instructions found here and the video from nat3mil on youtube, I was at a place i was ok with, a Rooted TBolt that I could start personalizing. The root went and i tried to download Das BAMF from Rom Manager, keys getting an error to contact Das BAMF team and decided to instead see what else was on the ROM Manager listing, eventually coming across the google apps upgrade at the bottom of the list.....
After installing that, i now have no market, no gmail, no talk and am not sure what to do other than restore to stock and reroot. Does anyone have any adive / help that could provide? Thank you very much for your time reading this.
You don't want to download the ROM from ROM Manager. I highly suggest downloading the ROM from the OP (original post) in the bamf thread.
Oh and before you start getting pelted with rocks you probably want to ask any questions from now on in the Q&A or the General forum. Those forums pretty much exist to answer your Q's. Just a heads up.
I would say reflash your ROM. The google apps you find in ROM manager are for ROMs that don't initially come with them.
Also, don't flash through ROM manager, very bad idea.
Before you get slammed this does not belong in the development forum. Q&A forum is the correct place.
Ok back to your question. Google apps in Rom manager are listed for ASOP roms like CM Android 2.3 not the stock rooted froyo Rom on the Thunderbolt.
Download your Rom from this forum list only to be safe that what your getting is what you want. Thunderbolt development has a nice selection of roms by many developers that give you a chance to review before flashing a Rom.
So pick a Rom to download from XDA and flash from recovery. That will be the easiest way to be your Thunderbolt back to working order.

With regard to the google apps, those are not for sense roms. Essentially, they're there for CM7 since the gapps don't come prepackaged. In short, don't flash them for BAMF.
./adb signature
Flashed Das BAMF 1.7 and its all fixed, sorry for the nub thread and question. Still a learning experience for me regarding Android and the Forum. Thank you all.

As a new rooted thunderbolt user, i found that it has options, LOTS of options. I am not a big tweaker, customizer or developer sort but i do like to have stability in my apps, decent battery life for my phone and the ability for quick updates.
I have been looking for something that would suit me as an android user and where better to ask than the xda forums.
I am right off of permroot and s-off, i have knowledge of fastboot, hboot, and cwm/cwr. I have knowledge of adb with everything set up on a local pc.
For my first flash i understand i will have to wipe everything but i would love the ability to flash additional updates and versions over without having to wipe.
Thanks for hearing me out, now with my info what rom and kernal do you suggest
The ones in my sig.
Or try Perfect storm for a ROM, Adry's kernels too.
I was in the same boat, not too long ago. I went with Das BAMF, and I love it. I started on the regular, then moved to the remix, which I'm currently updating. Make sure you grab ROM Manager and Kernel Manager, since they simplify updating.
As for wiping, that is usually recommended when flashing a new ROM, but most updates don't require it. And wiping isn't nearly as painful once you are rooted and can run better backups than normally allowed.
I've been enjoying the Das BAMF ROMs and kernels from Adrynalyne. I only wipe cache/dalvik when I upgrade (currently running 1.3.2 ROM with 4.4.2 kernel).

Of course, you should look around and see what you like!
I came from the Droid and loved Liquid Gingerbread ROM, there is a working version for the Thunderbolt that is pretty good.
Sorry can't post the link yet... but Google will help you there.
When find the page scroll down for the Thunderbolt version currently v1.1
I did try to search but can't find the answer. I am about to root my new replacement TB. My old phone was rooted and running the stock rom from the original rooting thread. So my question is in the last flash of rooting do you have to use the rom in the thread or can you go straight to bamf or whatever? Thanks
Once your rooted you can go to any Rom you want. Some want you to use a certain radio though.
ROM
Im using Eaton ROM 1.5.3 with MR2.5 radio...check it out it is a great build...
What the title says . I tried google, searching within the forums, but some had their withdraws and were for froyo 2.2. Just wondering how you themers within this thread doing this, I'd hope to bring some goodies here one day
Flash Scrosler's OTA rom. Other than flashing, you can't really do much.
Thanks!

You can always set up the "android kitchen" and deodex the ROM yourself.
I am no DEV, but I did the same for my INC2 ROM

Hi all, I'm enjoying reading lots in this forum in order to learn how to unleash my S3. One massive thank you to all who make this community such a great and rich resource. Thanks!
After reading a bunch, I took the XDA plunge. Here's what I've recently done (maybe this will help someone who's considering taking the plunge too. I was surprised at how easy everything was). I rooted my i9300 by flashing CF-AutoRoot via Odin. I then downloaded GooManager from the Market. It installed an open recovery script for me, TWRP. Next, I rebooted to TWRP recovery mode and did a backup and then a factory reset. I flashed temasek's build (v20) of Android 4.3/10.2 with the latest gapps zip (20130813). Then came the moment of truth. I was nervous when my phone took a bit longer to boot. The sweet Cyanogenmod logo just kept swirling. Finally, it booted and I was in love.
I have just a few questions about my phone now.
First, is the TWRP backup I did adequate to get me out of serious trouble if something goes wrong flashing updates? The backup ended up being over 2gb!
Secondly, have I done anything to the kernel? If not, should I?
Thirdly, have I done all that rooting and custom roms have to offer? Do I now just update my rom when new builds come out and continue enjoying my phone? If so, that's great. Just wondering what if anything I could do next, apart from trying other custom roms.
Lastly, what's the proper way to get help troubleshooting glitches/bug with the custom rom I'm using since I'm not yet able to post in its development forum thread? For example, my bluetooth won't turn off and in some apps the screen flickers or doesn't seem to render the window properly.
Thanks in advance.

1. A backup is always adequate on almost all situations and that size is acceptable since most of my backups are around 1.41 gb but I recommend that you also backup your efs since it's one of the most important things to backup on our devices. More info here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1308546
2. As far as I know any cyanogenmod based firmware installs it's own custom kernel however this is highly reversible as soon as you flash a stock firmware again.
3. Well the possibility of having a rooted phone are endless. In xda you'll find vast amount of tweaks, roms, kernels etc that you can flash on your device. Even I still keep on flashing things (with precautions of course) whenever i find something interesting.
4. Until you can post that thread just keep posting your question here in the Q & A but search the topic you have in mind first since it's most likely been asked before, just to keep the forum clean as much as possible.

No its not It has note backed up EFS .
Secondly, have I done anything to the kernel? If not, should I?
Your choice .

Your choice as to try other roms or mods .

Some roms have a Q&A thread or discussion thread . Usually problems are posted in the rom thread .

Thanks for the replies. I booted into recovery and used TWRP to do an EFS backup. Super easy.
Hello there,
I am new to the S2 phone (I will get one at the end of the month from a friend).
I see that there are lots of roms and kernels.
Now what I am searching for is:
Super optimized rom like Tigrouzens rom for Samsung Wave 1 and 2.
Also kernel super optimized.
With other words. a really fast rom (I don't want outdated roms).
Preffered android version:
4.3.X Jelly Bean / 4.4 Kitkat
Also, I don't really know how to install those roms/kernels. So a simple tutorial should do it. Because I once flashed one through odin from pc and not through recovery.
Greetings,
GreekBlood
Go to the development sections (Android Development & Original Android Development), read some threads, try out some roms to find one that suits your needs. Instructions for flashing roms are always on the first page devoted to the rom & always very clear.
Rom recommendations are forbidden here because they're so subjective, mods will close the thread if you insist on asking for them (this is XDA after all, if you're here, it's assumed you like flashing stuff to your phone).

And the best ROM is................................................................. LOL
I predict thread soon to be closed (i am psychic haha)
Oh, sorry.
But it is a bit of a mess here. So many roms, so many kernels.
I'm coming from wave 1 where we have 2 roms and 2 kernels.
Being a newbie, i being in you shoes a few days ago would advice you to start with understanding the fundamentals og flashing and use of the various recoveries out there. You say its a mess because you see so many roms and kernels and you dont know where to begin. Pick one and start and with time you will catch up with the rest. Good luck...modding and customizing android is like a rabbit whole...no end...

Reading the first page & last 10 pages of any rom/kernel thread will give you a couple of things:-
*Instructions how to flash & features
*Some idea of how users are finding the most recent build/any issues
That's a good place to start.
Some people treat this place like a macdonalds drive-thru.
