X10 shut off after 3g over uses. - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have actually posted this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1017241
before but it seem the problem isn't about battery over heat after i got a brand new genuine battery, so i like to start a new thread.
I have pinpoint the problem to be more specific only limit to 3G usage. The phone will just shut off after using 3g outside (rogers) for sometime at least when phone heat up and it will go into shut off cycle. Whenever i turn it back on it would simply reboot itself once i did the initial unlock and keep doing so as soon 3g power on.
I would like to ask if anyone have similar issue with this and a fix? could the cause be baseband ?
I never experience shut off if i am using wi-fi in my house or on a hotspot outside. No matter what i do on the phone.

[Q] A way to prevent cell tower hopping/switching

Is there a way in either the settings menu or an app that will prevent the Photon from constantly looking/pinging for a stronger tower? I have determined that once locked onto a tower and it stays locked (or locked onto wifi), my battery life is actually very good. For example, at lunch, I sit in my car for about 45 minutes connected to one of the 4g towers and am using the phone the whole time while listing to music/podcast and using the internet and I start with a full charge and will only lose between 10 to 15 percent of the battery.
However, where I actually live are a bunch of weak coverage areas. While sitting in the school car pickup line for about 30 minutes I will typically lose close to 40 percent of the battery and the temperature goes up to 107 – 110 while I do nothing with my phone. My normal temp is 93 – 95. I used one of the locale apps that tells you what cell tower number you are on and in the 30 minutes I was in the car line it connected to seven different towers switching between them all many times. The cell phone tower pinging also happens when at a football came (Bucs, Raymond James Stadium) because of the amount of people trying to use their phones. There is no possible way of making it through the six hours without the phone dying.
So my question is – without going into airplane mode is there a way to prevent the cell tower hopping? I would rather have a constant weak signal then having the phone constantly looking for a better signal.
I am rooted on stock rom.
I don't think so man. Cell signal plays a huge roll on cdma phones, obviously the better signal you have the better battery life. Ive never heard of a way to prevent cell tower hopping as these phones are programmed to link with the best tower it feels will offer best signal. Sometimes you'll be on a Verizon tower and that may be the best one around or it may be the worst but if its closest to you your phone will possibly connect to it. You don't have to turn on airplane mode; i use the data saver profile that only uses data when the screen is on so when screen is off i save a **** ton of battery because the phone isn't trying connect the radio.
This is the only feature remotely close to what you're asking and it won't prevent "tower hopping". This will just only connect to sprint towers if you choose "Sprint only" resulting in probably even worse battery life.

Thanks for your input. I was reading some of the other threads hear and found what you show in the picture. Mine was on any cdma and I switched it to auto as it was suggested it might help with 3g.
I am going to see how automatically performs today when I pick up my kid. Tomorrow I will switch to sprint only to see if that makes a difference.
I will report tomorrow evening with findings.
If we can get custom radios for the phone that should make a difference. The radio (afaik) contains the algorithm for determining which tower to connect to based on the PRL, among other things.

Go to settings and battery etc then find battery mode. Works like a charm i.swear.

By turning off data when screen is off , will data sync automatically when I wake the phone up?
Also, switching to automatic in the settings did not help while in my kid's car line at school. I am going to change to Sprint Only tomorrow and reboot before I leave work. I did not reboot today when I changed to automatically. Not sure if that makes a difference.

Yes when u wake up the phone it will sync everything.
Just an update. Today my phone has never been better with battery and cell tower switching. The only other thing I did was reboot after changing to "automatically " . Real test will be this afternoon.
What really stands out is the battery tempature. At idle it is in the low 80s. After heavy use it is in low 90s. Maybe I did get lucky with the change.

RAZR XT910 problems

I have been using the phone for 2 days now and I observed the following problems:
1. The WiFi signal is weak. I mean in the areas where my HTC Desire or iPhone 4 has one signal bar, the RAZR XT910 has no signal
2. The device does not wake-up sometimes. I have to press the power button several times. I guess this is lag from the android OS.
3. I have got some lags and errors from the android OS these two days. Hope some updates will come.
Please reply if you have similar issues with your device, especially the first two points.
Any 3G/UMTS problems?
I cant connect to 3G only EDGE.
I cant see 3G networks.

Agreed. I have an Australian Razr and have found the same issue. Haven't noticed an issue with speed but the signal strength indicator is definitely on average a bar down on my Galaxy.

Agreed too. Just happened then but instead of eventually waking it restarted. Has also happened once before but did eventually wake.

This might be caused by in pocket detection. Disable it, might help.

I have an optus razr
I have none of the issues you are experiencing. The 'low' wifi signal strength is probably caused because you are connected to a wireless-g router. The razr is capable of wireless-n . I always get full signal bars connected to my 'n' router and 2-3 bars on my 'g' router.
No issues using the power button to turn the phone on/off. No lag in the interface. Miss my optical trackpad from my desire though
My router is wireless-n. I have just checked with the router and it have the weakest from all my mobiles.
Anyone else with this problem?
Try to set your router to support a/b/g + n WiFi. Sometimes WiFi chips can behave very strange.
the router is set to support a/b/g + n WiFi. I have htc desire with g Wi-Fi. the problem comes from the razr wifi.
okay so, I'm back on XDA Developers after owning an iPhone 3, 3Gs and 4 for a couple years (after I moved on from my old Nexus One) and I've had the RAZR for a couple days..
an issue I ran into on the first day of owning it, was constant rebooting when the phone was put to sleep.. I couldn't figure out what the issue was apart from that it only occurred when I was connected to wifi at home (didn't happen when I was connected to wifi anywhere else or when wifi was switched off)... so I went back to the store I got it from for a replacement.. hoping that the phone wasn't going to encouter the same rebooting issues, to my bad luck, it kept happening.. so I thought that maybe it wasn't just because I got myself a dud (both times)...
so today I did some diagnosing the issue which I localised to being my router settings... and luckily enough, it WAS the configuration of my router... I tried to see what the differences were between my configurations at home, and that of the wifi routers at work...
So apparently, the RAZR doesn't like the following (could be just one of them, or a combination of both):
- SSID Not Broadcasting (i.e. Hidden SSID's)
- MAC Address Filtering.
So I unhid my SSID and now it's broadcasting, and I also turned off MAC Address Filtering and using WPA security instead.. Now the phone doesn't constantly reboot. Just odd that the phone doesn't like those settings. Anyways, just happy the phone doesn't constantly reboot when put to sleep.
Hopefully these details help anyone else who ends up running into the rebooting issues when put to sleep.
Have a same problems with my RAZR. But all my wi-fi network is hidden and wpa2 personal secured, but phone randomly rebooting only at work.
home router - time capsule (apple)
work router - d-link DIR320.
P.S. if i disable wifi on phone- no rebooting at all.
Raze phone issues
I have a Razr sourced from Mobicity in Australia, bought from them to avoid the Optus bloat. I love this phone it is a gorgeous piece of kit, big beautiful screen, fast etc. BUT twice in the last two days I have received phone calls, answered them, and the caller was unable to hear me. And ultimately I need this to be a reliable phone first and a gorgeous bit of kit second.
Anybody else suffering similar problems. I hav had to revert back to my iphone4 because I have to have a reliable phone for work. I'd love to find the issue and am open to any suggestions. I am on Telstra by the way.
Ok. Problems I have encountered the 2 days I have used the phone:
Constant freeze. The first hour I used the phone it froze and rebooted 7 or 8 times.
Missing SocialLocation.apk. This caused a problem for the GPS in smart actions to work at all. Rooted phone and installed the app, and problem disappeared.
Tried to hard reset the phone because of all the rebooting problems. Guess what, on the first menu coming up where you can choose language, the phone froze and rebooted again. Now still it is constantly freezing and rebooting.
The freezing issues does not really have one specific app causing it. It can happen whenever doing whatever!
Anyone got a solution for this? Maybe a OTA update for Norwegian model?
For anyone mentioning the loss of WiFi signal, i think its suffering from what the iPhone 4 did, its dependant on where you hold the phone, i think the WiFi receiver on the phone is right about where youd hold the phone (in the middle at the back of the phone)
I noticed i was getting the dropping of signal bars, so decided to test it out, holding the phone normally the bars would drop 1 maybe 2 (in my living room where my desire gets full bars) then held it around the edges of the phone and instantly got full bars again.
I cant say this IS the problem you lot are having, but i definitely find holding the phone a little differently from what i normally do makes a huge difference for me.
Anyway just my 2 pence, hope this helps some of you guys.

I have problem 1 and 2 and weak wi-fi even when the phone is on my desk (not touching it with my hands that is)
1、yes, the wifi is weak
2、when the phone is being charging, sometimes I press the power button it wakes but go dark quickly, and I have to press the button again
I'm on my second Razr right now. My first had the blotches on the screen when using a black background. My second Razr has an unresponsive touchscreen a few times a day. I used to assume that my phone was locking up, but it went to sleep when I pressed the power button, and woke up with a working touchscreen. It will also respond to volume and screen rotation, just no touchscreen until you sleep/wake it.

Maybe you have pocket detection enabled, and when you put your hands in front of the sensor the phone screen shuts off, you don't even need to put your hands in front of the screen, sometimes all you need is to make a shadow in front of the sensors and you will see the phone screen shut off.
Happened to me sometimes, but i knew right away it was pocket detection shutting off the screen.
Thank God i have no complains at all about my phone, maybe a the wifi weakness problem, but for me it still have a very good speed at home on wifi, so don't care about the bars at all.

Need some help with cell standby turning on airplane mode, among other things

So yesterday I upgraded to ICS. I am running stock phone with no mods done to it.
I am attaching some pictures for you guys to see what the problem is. The battery level starts from when Unplugged the phone to download ICS.
Now I am connected to wifi all day and night because I get no signal in this place. Its a basement appartment. As you can see, I went to bed, and for some reason mobile network signal popped on the entire time while I was sleeping. This has NEVER happened before. Then I got up and took my phone and put it on the charger and as you can see it automatically went right back onto wifi Fine.
My question is what is going on with that? My only conclusion is the cell standby which was on for 5 hours and 4 mins as you can see in the picture.
It also says switch to airplane mode to save power in area with no coverage. Is that what it is doing ?? and how do I take that off??. I cant go the whole night without having service and not getting anything.
Why would my wifi go off?
And incase you ask, no I do not have any juicedefender on my phone
Thanks guys
The phone shuts off the WiFi when data comes on... That part is normal.
However, I have not the slightest clue why your mobile network would just turn on by itself when not being used. The color of your data readings is a different color than I've seen also. Very strange

I guess I will see what happens tonight. Something is turning off Wifi when the phone goes on standby or when I dont use it for a while I am assuming. Just no idea how that can happen. There are not any settings I can set for it either to stop it. Hope some people on the board have an idea
EDIT: Wait I think I found a solution. What do you guys think?
Maybe this needs to be on always.

Yup, you should have the first one selected if you want wifi to stay on while your screen is off.

[Q] Phone keeps disturbing speakers after returning home

So I have a rather strange problem.
You all know those interference noises a phone causes while receiving a SMS or a call.
If I'm home the whole day I have no problem with those noises. I only have them occasionally when i get an sms or something like that.
But when I leave the house for uni for example and return later my speakers are constantly humming and it doesn't really stop. It will only stop after I turn on airplane mode and turn it back off.
Also during that time the battery drains rapidly. It's about 10% per hour.
I've had that problem with the stock rom and then went through all Resurrection Remix Versions since 2.1, but the only difference was the volume and the sound of the interference. But it never went away.
Currently I'm on Resurrection Remix 2.4 with Siyah 3.3.2 and Modem Version I9100DXLP9.
I guess I could try all diferent modem versions and look if it fixes the problem. But since I don't really know what I have to do to start it, it's a little tricky to check if it is really fixed. I only know for certain that the problem occurs after returning from uni.
Here's a screenshot of the battery drain of today.
It contains:
1. night
2. leaving the house and listening to beyond pod on my way to uni (first awake period)
3. while in uni checking the time
4. driving back, listening to beyond pod, playing on gbadroid
5. at least you see the gap in the wifi status, that's where i turned on and off the airplane mode
the prblm is radiowaves tht interfere the electronic devices, well i don kno wat settings or any tweaks u on,,,but a good idea is to check if ur cordless phone, oven,tv all r placed at far distance as per electronic rules,an yes sometimes these things happen.its not neccesary tht it takes place for all..during my studies we had this project on y the tv gets mass disturbance during lunch hrs,see the real prblm was the oven ,behind the wall and the phone, very clearly the oven will on,cause its lunch time an ppl usd to make calls cause it was free time too..so check ur devices an post
If you mean that another device is disturbing the speakers, then I can tell you that that is definitely not the case since the interference stops once I turn the phone off.
Also I don't think that any device is interfering with my phone because the problem vanishes after I reboot.
I wrote before that it suffices to turn on airplane mode and turn it back off, but today that also wasn't enough. The disturbance went away, but the battery drain stayed. So I turned the phone off, removed the battery, waited a few secs, put it back in and turned it on again. After that the battery percentage dropped instantly from 19% to 12% but since then it has stayed at 12%.
I made another Screenshot:
I think I have an idea what could be causing the problem. I think it has to do with GSM/UMTS.
Where I live there is hardly any UMTS connection. So I guess, when I leave the house and come into UMTS region my phone switches to that, but after I get home it has problems switching back to GSM and that's what's causing the noise.
It's only a wild guess, but I try to confirm it during the next days. I just switched to UMTS only. That means I have hardly any connection at home, but I'll see wether that helps my problem...

UMTS ought not provide the same sort of interference. I don't know the technical reason anymore, but my understanding is that only 2G induces that kind of interference in other circuitry.
That's why I think maybe it's stuck switching between UMTS and GSM and everytime it switches to GSM it interferes with my speakers and that constant switching is causing the battery drain.
I guess it could have something to do with the fact that there is no reception in my lecture hall at all.
I will have to try to track down wether that constant disturbance and battery drain only happens after the phone hasn't had any reception for a longer period of time or if it is always after I leave the house.
So today I was again in that mentioned lecture hall and after returning home the speakers again wouldn't shut up.
I noticed a little downward arrow in the connection bar. I don't really know what that's doing there since I have wifi active and no data connection.
After a while disturbing the speakers and not getting really good signal it changes to UMTS. The disturbance is gone but so is my connection.
After a reboot the arrow and the disturbance are gone. So I guess there is some data connection that is stuck or something like that?

[Q] [q] 3g/4g/1x battery issues

SO i have this common problem. Anytime i'm somewhere with a bad signal, my phone gets really hot and battery get really low.
The phone gets stuck syncing, so i manually turn off sync and kill any ongoing sync. But it happens even when the signal really isn't bad.
For example tonight, it said i had 3g, but i wasn't getting any data. So i went outside and still 3g. I turn airplane mode on.. then off again, then presto i have 4g.
I think something is happening where it gets stuck in 3g or 1x with no data, and it makes no attempts to go back to 3g, or back to 4g, it just sits there burning up my battery.
SO a: should the phone ever get really hot to the touch ? (The back.. it's the battery that is warm i'm sure)
b. What i can i do so it will stop being so stupid and pick up the good 4g when it's clearly there...
c. I just have to stop this losing battery power in 20 min flat problem. My wife has the same phone and she has no such problems.
I can tell it's doing it as i can fell my pocket getting hot. That shouldn't happen in my opinion.
What software are you running stock of other?

weren't there reports of people having an issue like this with the phone getting stuck when switching from 3g / 4g? i'm wanting to say i've heard of stock phones doing that and a replacement phone fixed it. unless you want to keep using a manual effort to force it back like what you are doing with airplane mode...
I've had similar issues in low signal areas (unfortunately that is the norm where I work). It doesn't happen all the time, maybe once a week where the phone gets really hot even when not in use. I reboot to fix.
I was running Viper for months and it happened with both stock and that ROM. Running CM10.1 now, and I'll see if that changes anything.
Sorry, but I guess I have nothing to add for cause or solution, just thought I'd share having the same issue.
