hi guys i wont a phone and i am between galaxy s II and xperia play . i wont a phone for games . i know that xperia play is a phone for games but i think galaxy s 2 is better and on games. what do you suggest ? if you know better phone than this two tell me which do you prefer ?
thanks
(i think you have to move this on general discussion. sorry)
If you want want a full selection of games off the bat think about going for one of the tegra 2 handsets... The xperia play is kind of out dated already. While it's the superior handset on the market looking at specs on paper, there are a load of games that won't run on the galaxy s2 out of the box, or at all. A lot of them have been confirmed for support in the future.. And some of the tegra specific ones can be worked around if you're happy to root but at present it's not the ideal phone if your focus is on gaming.
That said, I wouldn't swap mine for anything else. There are more than enough casual time-wasters available and most emulators run nice... And the screen technology means that anything you do run will look jaw dropping.
Hope that helps, as contradictory as it may be.

Are you serious?
These 2 can barely be compared.. They're from 2 different generations: single-core vs dual-core.
Galaxy S 2 is far superior in all aspects over the Xperia Play.
Okay.. it doesn't support Tegra games and it's not a Playstation Certified phone, but who cares?
If you want to play games, just buy a PSP or a Nintendo.
Otherwise, just go for the Galaxy S 2.
You won't be disappointed trust me..

Noone considers the sensation? I find it difficult to.chose from between them.cmon between play and sgs2 chose sgs2 ,cmon sgs2 is totally better then play

I've had got both and the xperia play is TERRIBLE, it has a 1mm 'play' between the pad and the screen which makes texting impossible as it wobbles everytime you tap...
Its quite buggy too, PM me if you need any specific questions answered

Hello Guys I have both handsets. I disagree with the previous users comments regarding the xperia play. It is far more better designed than the Galaxy S2 like Stereo Speakers built into the handset brilliant Idea. The Speed for the play is fast aswell for single core aslo looks great. I know theres a wobble but its a moving part a slider phone if it did not wobble it would be stuck. The Battery in the play blows the GS2 out lasts along time also the screen technolody in the play i think is better and more Hi Res shraper than the GS2.
I am Very disappointed in the Galaxy S2 as No Games work for the device compared to to the play inwhich is not agood move so guys if you have a play keep it
Regards
Mark

Hi Mark, I'm actually thinking of returning my Galaxy S2 for those reasons. I do like the screen, camera, and the speed of SG2, but it lacks sound and it feels way to fragile for me. I also have a I8910 omnia HD which also has stereo speakers so i am use to having a loud phone. I like the look and feel of the Xperia play, and also like the fact it feels solid in my hands and has stereo speakers, but i have never actually used one.. anyway before i go a head and send my SG2 back, i want to make sure i'm doing the right thing and what the pros and cons are.. cheers mate, any advice would appreciated.. nick..
guys i deside to buy .... optimus 3d hehe
i have a friend who have galaxy s II and when he play games eg real football you can make a coffe on the phone or you can make a sandwich xD

Ive got my freind who wants to swap me his optimus 3d for my galaxy s2 and i was wondering what is the pros and cons? what would i gain and what would i also lose in doing so?
Thanks in advance
stick to what you have. the only thing that the optimus has is 3D pictures and really that is not that important anyway...if you are into 3D then try it for a few days but do not swap your galaxy s2 cause you have the best android phone at this moment of time so you be silly if you swapped it.
in my very valued and educated opinion, I must tell you I poop on lg after a night of drinking and wings. Hope this helps.
Why does he want to swap? Because he found out that the SGS2 beats the LG O 3D in all reviews or because he misses some feature he finds very important that his phone lacks but yours has? Ask him that and post your answers here
Other than that, I would say you do some research into the two, have a play with the two and if you find his phone to be better for what you want to do with it, why not swap?
My friend has the 3D as well.. Believe me definately sgs2.. 3D is an awsome phone don't get me wrong but for me Sgs2 is the winner..

Definitely SGS II... The Optimus 3D doesn't bring anything better to the game other than 3D... i find it useless cause my head starts hurting after looking at the screen for some time... but it may just be me... i have a SGS II and i'm thrilled... the best phone out there now
Hi, I just sold my Optimus 3D and bought the SGSII. The only reason i did so was for the battery life. The O3D has no battery life but is an awesome phone though and the screen on it is absolutely amazing. I really miss the O3D screen. In terms of performance there is not much in it, SGSII maybe slightly ahead with fewer lock ups for me. Software wise, I absoloutley prefered the stock LG software.
I dont think this helps you much but my 2p worth anyway Either way you will have a great phone.
Optimus 3D is... boring So, go for SGS II !
you are asking a large group of individuals that have essentially put their money towards a SGS2. plus on top, if the LG was better why would your mate want to be worse off? redumbnant thread.

yeah mate . having a phone that almost matches sgs2 in performance on android 2.2 and that may surpass it even on 2.3 (talking about stock versions always of course) plus having a 3d screen and camera is boring really... plus not to mention the really rich game support sgs2 has. (oh wait. with chainfire it runs fewer games than lg does without...). plus 2.3 is round the corner and ice cream was promised by lg 2 days ago... of course you cannot fry bacon on lg and not use it as a personal heater now that oil has gone up in price. srsly though i git an sgs2 first week it got out and apart from overheating its screen has vibrant colors but isplays really ooorly some colors (mainly mate ones) see angry birds sky really carefully to see what i mean. also it burnt a pixel after ten days and of course screen has no guarantee (only lg covers screen with guarantee and for tow years). thankfully it was in doa period and replaced it with 3d. dont regret it a single day

ohhh i have seen reviews. tehblogs that dont know what they talking about... for example evo3d is better just because it runs on 1.2ghz instead of only 1 on lg and not knowing that it is one generation back as a processor... like saying that a 486 is better than pentium cause it is clocked to a higher freq... and btw if you can really check out o3d in a store. not the evo but o3d. the 3d is no gimmick at all you will see
If you don't absolutely want it need to have the 3d display I would definitely choose the SGS2, mainly for its sleeker design, the SAMOLED+ display and the overall better OS (like Touchwiz4 more than LGs interface, and partly because of Samsung's hardware acceleration the S2 runs much smoother than anything else. Plus it runs Gingerbread, it is supported better- in terms of official updates by Samsung and also "unofficially" by the community).

Hey guys.
I'v been thinking for a while if it woth switching from the Atrix to the Xperia play since the play has the controller AND it gets the official ICS update..
looking for suggestions..
As far as the hardware of Xperia goes, it's just not worth it imo. If I were you, I would stick with the Atrix and wait for CM9 to get ironed out.
i heard that cm9 wont have hardware acceleration or something like that..something about not having the TEGRA2 drivers...
im thinking even to switch to the standart Xperia Arc.
I've been doing some research too but in my case to switch to the Galaxy Note, and even though I'm no longer a hardcore gamer, I did notice that any device that's not Tegra, the graphics don't look as great as Tegra devices.
Sure, the games can run, but special atmospheric effects (shaders) are simply non-existent on other platforms, which make them look flat and ugly.
I'm sure that will be the same with the xperia.
Why don't you get yourself a wii controller, or better yet, a PS3 controller and use it with your Atrix and be happy?
Just a suggestion...
Cheers!

If you want a more than good screen, well, yesterday I was blown away by the Galaxy Note's AWESOME screen!
I normally stay away from AMOLED based screens, but this beast is simply on another league!
Too bad is not Tegra based because Shadow Gun didn't look as great as on my Atrix. But heck, did I mentioned the screen is AWESOME on the Note?

i dont have enough money for a new phone now, and if i dont sell my atrix this week than probably it'll loose about 50$ of its price...(ISR).
Now i sent it to the lab cause i had the random reboots issue and the salesman said that he'll give me a new device. im counting on it XD
if not than im selling it probably for 1400 NIS (bought for 1800Nis about a month ago and 1$ = 3.5 NIS).
I'll probably add 300Nis and buy the Arc...want it so badly.
I currently use a Lumia 800 which is driving me nuts with its stupid problems. I'm looking for an affordable yet powerful Android phone.
I've shortlisted the following phones:
Sony Xperia S
Samsung Galaxy S2
Samsung Galaxy Note
Samsung Galaxy Nexus
Motorola Razr
My main usage requirements are playing games, browsing the web and listening to music. Which phone do you think is the best for me? Can't afford the GS3 or One X. Thanks!
Xperia S is the best I have seen so far. Im also actually looking for a phone that is high end or mid end. STRICTLY NO ****(low) END.
HTC ONE X doesnot support mostly best gameloft games like Modern Combat 3, N.O.V.A 3.
Same with Xperia S.
If you want to get a powerful Android device that supports most games, then "GALAXY S2" is the best choice !

Man I'm HTC user but Samsung Galaxy S2 is a brilliant machine, highly customizable and easy to use. I would go for that, and in case of the lower budget abilities I'd go for Nexus.
+1 for the S2.
Very simple to root and customize, and the dev scene is phenomenal for the phone, great roms, mods and themes kicking around.
With the S3 now out, the phone is likely to have dropped in price, and while the S3 has some great functions, half of them have been ported to the S2 and the rest are probably on their way or there's a great alternative out there.
Plus it has plenty of processing power, and a great screen.
Definitely go for that.
Motorola have always been iffy personally, build quality never great for me, and there not the most easily customized phones.
The Note is massive, great, but massive. But it's definitely not a bad choice.
The Nexus will probably get android 4.1 whereas that's less certain for the S2,
however the nexus is more expensive and doesn't offer a great number of benefits over the s2.
Either the GNexus or the GNote. They are both great at playing games and browsing the web and they can overclock quite well.
Thanks for the suggestions guys! Looks like GS2 is the best option for me right now.

The oddly-placed proximity sensor (top-right edge) fails to turn the screen off during calls, as a result 50% of the time I drop calls by hitting the "End Call" button with my face. Can't believe I wasted $500 on this piece of crap. Never going to Nokia again, just because I had to waste so much money now!

Honestly the GS2 seems like the best choice for you. I myself use the GNexus. I love it, it's customizable, pure google, and right for me. I like flashing roms every other day and customizing everything. :good:
I've heard a lot of good things about the Xperia S, looks pretty promising.
Hi, please pardon my bad English.
I really like the looks of this phone, hardware on paper looks pretty good as well, but after reading few posts here on xda it looks like phone is very slow with lots of bugs and choppy UI, on top it seems ICS update has made it worst.
It has got me worried whether i should buy it or not. I can't afford to make mistake as i will be using this phone for next 2-3 years. Please help me figure out!
So, I have few questions please answer them.
Q.1 Is this phone really slow with choppy UI?
Q.2 Does this phone have any hardware related bugs? (I've heard menu, home and back keys are not so responsive.)
Q.3 How much ram is available to user? (After gpu etc. taking its share)
Q.4 How much space is available to user for installing apps?
Q.5 How's gaming on it?
Q 6 Is ICS update an improvement of deterioration.
Q.7 How's video playback? Does it play divx/xvid?
I'm really sorry for asking so many questions but it will certainly help me decide. Thank you very much for your time.

Don't worry, I was in the exact same position as you. I was torn between buying sony X S and S2.
Before I reply I must tell you that internet reviews/forum posts don't mean much. You have to go to a store and hold the actual working phone in your hand to get the real feel.
I really wanted to buy S2 because it was cheaper than SXS by about 4000 INR back in April. But once I held the Sony SXS in my hand and looked at the superb display, my mind was made up on buying SXS.
Q.1 Is this phone really slow with choppy UI?
Nope, I am running stock ICS 4.0.4 works perfect.
Q.2 Does this phone have any hardware related bugs? (I've heard menu, home and back keys are not so responsive.)
Again untrue. The menu keys etc are fine, once you get used to them they will never annoy you. But you really should go to a shop and see it for your self.
Q.3 How much ram is available to user? (After gpu etc. taking its share)
After installing about 50 or so apps plus keeping GPRS data on most of the time I have about 225-150MB ram available. But remember that this is not a windows OS, so you don't need free unused ram.
Q.4 How much space is available to user for installing apps?
more than 25GB on internal memory + ~2 GB on phone memory
Q.5 How's gaming on it?
I play riptide which has 3d graphics and can push the hardware to the limit, never had any problems.
Q 6 Is ICS update an improvement of deterioration.
Definitely an improvement over GB in a lot of areas. The UI on SXS is much better than touchwiz provided by samsung.
Q.7 How's video playback? Does it play divx/xvid?
I play both Xvid as well as x264 encoded MP4s without any problems on the stock video player.
Lastly: samsung has been fooling Indian consumers by selling 9100G model which is technically inferior to 9100. so beware before buying.
Thanks a lot, your reply is a big help. I will checkout Xperia S at Sony showroom tomorrow.
One last question if you don't mind.
Have you ever experienced stuttering music playback while using maps or any other hardware intense app?
(Someone mentioned something about stuttering music playback when Bluetooth or GPS is enabled.)

S3 is unfortunately out of my budget.
No comparison really IMO. The XS screen alone will make you forget Galaxy SII. Even the Galaxy SIII screen is inferior to XS screen.
I'm very happy with my SxS, I still have it running on GB, I'll wait for the next ICS update-cycle before upgrading (or perhaps that will immediately be Jelly Bean).
But on GB, this is by far the best phone I've had or seen by friends/co-workers. There is also nothing in the ICS update I particulary want or need and I haven't seen (or wanted to use) any apps that require ICS yet.
I have seen the Galaxy S2, but it does have a lot of bugs in the GB Rom. Not sure about the ICS Roms. So I would definately go for the Xperia S. Also Sony support is really good, they read their own forums and really do fix their bugs, imho. Not saying Samsung doesn't, but for example LG is really crap in this area.
Despite of having some doubts i am going for SXS. Let's just hope for the best.
Thanks for your help guys!

I have stuttery music playback on GB and that can be if I've simply got a browser open in background.
To OP, my advice would be to get the SGSII because, in my experience, this phone hasn't lived up to expectations whatsoever. It might be because I got the phone so early after it was released, but then again it might not be.
Obviously the choice is yours, but I'll put it simply.
If you want a better spec phone with better graphics for gaming, video playback etc, then go for the Xperia S. If you want a great reliable phone to last over the 2-3 years, then the SGSII is your best option

My experience has been great with the Xperia S. I recently sent back a Galaxy Nexus because of the poor samsung build quality. I would never buy a Samsung except maybe a galaxy 3. But it is too expensive and still not worth it. Sorry but the Galaxy S 2 is not even a comparison to the Xperia s.

For general usage, my experience with the phone has been great and I can't fault it. It's just when it comes to being a heavy duty user, that it just isn't capable of working to the extent it should.
It also depends on how long ago you got your SXS because I got mine on the 2nd day of release in the UK, whereas if I was to have only got it over the last couple of weeks, I probably wouldn't be having these problems with it.

I would consider myself a heavy user and it has been really good so far. My buddy had a Galaxy S2 and had nothing but problems. The S can only get better too, because Sony has been release updates for it pretty quickly. If anything the op should consider a Galaxy Nexus or the Xperia S. Galaxy S2 is terrible.

So basically you guys are telling me there's bug in early builds of this phone?
^
Yes early batches (some of them) had the yellow tint screen issue. But all that is solved now in the fresh batches since May.

Yep, That problem was solved long time ago. People who got defective pieces, were replaced by Sony service centres.

Or any other issues?Because I'm really interested in getting this phone ASAP. I'll be glad and thankful to you people if I get my queries answered! Thank you!

Hey,
I've been using my Xperia Acro S for about 10 days now, i've used the Galaxy S 3, S2, HTC One X and Defy before this.
The first thing i did when i got the Xperia Acro S was put it in a tub filled with about 50CM of water, left it there for about a minute, when i took it out everything worked fine, just be sure to close all the connection ports before you try this.
The phone's performance is pretty much on par with the Galaxy S 2, i haven't noticed any lag in using the device, sometimes it becomes laggy but that's because i have many apps open in the background so i assume that's normal.
I've played The Dark Knight Rises and it was completely lag free, the graphics were great.
I've also played Dead Trigger without any issues, great graphics as well.
When i compare it directly with the Motorola Defy it's quite a big step up,
The performance improvement is noticable.
Another useful feature is wet-finger tracking which allows you to use the screen with wet fingers, i remember this being a problem with my Defy.
The battery life for me is ok. I usually manage to get about 3 hours screen on time, this is with 5 active e-mails push syncing, using 3-4 apps like WhatsApp, Bluetooth on all day (connected for half the day). Wi-Fi on all the time, brightness set to max.
The camera is very satisfactory for me, it has nice features like panorama, smile detection etc and the quality is better than the 8MP camera's from the other high-end phones.
The only thing that slightly bothered me was that the phone's NFC doesn't seem to be on par with other higher end devices,
Basically i have to press the NFC card on the back of the phone and sometimes it doesn't even recognize it.
Whereas on the HTC One X and Galaxy S 3 it's sufficient to just put the NFC card a couple of CM's away from the phone and it recognizes always.
As i said, not a big problem, just saying.
All in all, i am very satisfied.
Hope this helped.
Does it feels fat? It looks fat but I want to know this from someone who has it
SGS2
I had a Galaxy S3 GT I9300, but from a week back I'm currently having a Sony Xperia Ion. Tbh, I loved Sony's UI much better and some backup & restore unbuilt facilities better than of Samsung. So yeah, being the holder of S3. I will sitll recommend you Acro S.

Thank you both of you... Guess I've made my choice Just waiting for Sony to launch this baby in India!
The back of the phone heats up very fast.
And battery not that satisfied, 1.5GHz is too much for the phone.
I underclocked to 1GHz and games still run lag-free, (riptide 3D,Cordy,Cordy sky)
And when your screen is awake, and u pour water on it, the phone interface will messed up. (Water somehow acts as fingers and some dragging and long press occurs)
And u can't really dip the phone into water with screen awake, like above the screen will go crazy and no response at all.
If u awake the phone in water, u can't touch anything, but if u can turn on the camera, u can use the shutter button to take pictures. (provided ur screen doesn't messed up)
So its water resistant doesnt mean u can use ur phone underwater

Comparing to the Defy, it's obviously a worthy upgrade. In term of battery life, it's okayish for a dual core phone. I have been playing 3D game like dead trigger with zero lag problem so I will vouch for that. Camera is superb if you know how to use it right. Sony camera is a bit different, the auto focus was kinda clumsy and you have to do it manually to get the best quality. Water proof is definely a plus. This phone can last for years before your next upgrade.
hi all,
need to ask if anyone knows how to use Wi-Fi direct?

I don't think wifi-direct is supported on acro s ics version yet, at least I cannot find the options as shown on the other xperias which do support it. DLNA support only so far...

I guess there's no WiFi direct as snapdragon S3 doesn't support it..

I think it dose..

Yes, that specs on GsmArena brought my hopes up, but now I am more inclined to think specs listed it as an error. The specs listed inside the GsmArena review page1 do not say wifi-direct.
Xperia P has wifi-direct but is not snapdragon S3. I wonder if any S3 based phone currently has wifi-direct?
Sent from my LT26w using Tapatalk 2
I guess we have to ask HTC folks for that.
But i had google it. And the page i landed too. Stated it would not.
Sent from my LT26i using xda app-developers app
My HTC Sensation has the same CPU as ACRO S and HTC support Wi-Fi Direct
Seems like wifi-direct support depends on the wireless communication chipset used, might have nothing to do with S3 or not. Could not find any high res photos or mention what chip is in 2012 xperias though...

i too currently own a motorola defy as the op, and i plan to upgrade in 1-2 months, and my definite win was acro s - until now.
im not the type to stick to stock roms, im a dedicated cyanogenmod user, and i really want a phone which runs cm10 without problem, but now i read that until sony releases a jb upgrade for the acro s, cm10 wont have camera and the battery drains a lot. although from what i understand cm9 is running quite decently, so i think i can stick with that. but will this always be like this, that the acro s wont be upgradeable until sony released an official build?
and i have another question:
the xperia s and xperia acro s have almost identical hardware, except the battery and the microsd extension.
and the xperia s has aosp support, and sony already released its binaries. why cant we use its binaries to fix the camera and the battery drain? or am i seriously missing something here? what are the differences between the two devices software-wise?
and i also read that cm10 is not really ready for daily use yet. is that because the high battery consumption and lack of camera, or are there other bugs?
sorry for asking this many questions, but i couldnt find any answers to this anywhere, even though i did search them first.
Quarx is missing
I might consider Xperia V
I can say that Acro S with the stock rom with all the bloatware removed is a decent device, very stable .
I personally have no issues with it. I tried all the other "stable" roms out there (MIUI and CM9.1) and I always came back to stock .
Xperia T has MHL (HDMI) and Camera working as of FXP 142 when it's released
Unreal fast phone
Go Sony, you won't regret it!
