I currently use a Lumia 800 which is driving me nuts with its stupid problems. I'm looking for an affordable yet powerful Android phone.
I've shortlisted the following phones:
Sony Xperia S
Samsung Galaxy S2
Samsung Galaxy Note
Samsung Galaxy Nexus
Motorola Razr
My main usage requirements are playing games, browsing the web and listening to music. Which phone do you think is the best for me? Can't afford the GS3 or One X. Thanks!
Xperia S is the best I have seen so far. Im also actually looking for a phone that is high end or mid end. STRICTLY NO ****(low) END.
HTC ONE X doesnot support mostly best gameloft games like Modern Combat 3, N.O.V.A 3.
Same with Xperia S.
If you want to get a powerful Android device that supports most games, then "GALAXY S2" is the best choice !

+1.
OP, just out of curiosity...what kind of problems are you experiencing with the Lumia 800?

Man I'm HTC user but Samsung Galaxy S2 is a brilliant machine, highly customizable and easy to use. I would go for that, and in case of the lower budget abilities I'd go for Nexus.
+1 for the S2.
Very simple to root and customize, and the dev scene is phenomenal for the phone, great roms, mods and themes kicking around.
With the S3 now out, the phone is likely to have dropped in price, and while the S3 has some great functions, half of them have been ported to the S2 and the rest are probably on their way or there's a great alternative out there.
Plus it has plenty of processing power, and a great screen.
Definitely go for that.
Motorola have always been iffy personally, build quality never great for me, and there not the most easily customized phones.
The Note is massive, great, but massive. But it's definitely not a bad choice.
The Nexus will probably get android 4.1 whereas that's less certain for the S2,
however the nexus is more expensive and doesn't offer a great number of benefits over the s2.
Either the GNexus or the GNote. They are both great at playing games and browsing the web and they can overclock quite well.
Thanks for the suggestions guys! Looks like GS2 is the best option for me right now.

The oddly-placed proximity sensor (top-right edge) fails to turn the screen off during calls, as a result 50% of the time I drop calls by hitting the "End Call" button with my face. Can't believe I wasted $500 on this piece of crap. Never going to Nokia again, just because I had to waste so much money now!

Honestly the GS2 seems like the best choice for you. I myself use the GNexus. I love it, it's customizable, pure google, and right for me. I like flashing roms every other day and customizing everything. :good:
I've heard a lot of good things about the Xperia S, looks pretty promising.

hi guys i wont a phone and i am between galaxy s II and xperia play . i wont a phone for games . i know that xperia play is a phone for games but i think galaxy s 2 is better and on games. what do you suggest ? if you know better phone than this two tell me which do you prefer ?
thanks
(i think you have to move this on general discussion. sorry)
If you want want a full selection of games off the bat think about going for one of the tegra 2 handsets... The xperia play is kind of out dated already. While it's the superior handset on the market looking at specs on paper, there are a load of games that won't run on the galaxy s2 out of the box, or at all. A lot of them have been confirmed for support in the future.. And some of the tegra specific ones can be worked around if you're happy to root but at present it's not the ideal phone if your focus is on gaming.
That said, I wouldn't swap mine for anything else. There are more than enough casual time-wasters available and most emulators run nice... And the screen technology means that anything you do run will look jaw dropping.
Hope that helps, as contradictory as it may be.

Are you serious?
These 2 can barely be compared.. They're from 2 different generations: single-core vs dual-core.
Galaxy S 2 is far superior in all aspects over the Xperia Play.
Okay.. it doesn't support Tegra games and it's not a Playstation Certified phone, but who cares?
If you want to play games, just buy a PSP or a Nintendo.
Otherwise, just go for the Galaxy S 2.
You won't be disappointed trust me..

Hello Guys I have both handsets. I disagree with the previous users comments regarding the xperia play. It is far more better designed than the Galaxy S2 like Stereo Speakers built into the handset brilliant Idea. The Speed for the play is fast aswell for single core aslo looks great. I know theres a wobble but its a moving part a slider phone if it did not wobble it would be stuck. The Battery in the play blows the GS2 out lasts along time also the screen technolody in the play i think is better and more Hi Res shraper than the GS2.
I am Very disappointed in the Galaxy S2 as No Games work for the device compared to to the play inwhich is not agood move so guys if you have a play keep it

Hi Mark, I'm actually thinking of returning my Galaxy S2 for those reasons. I do like the screen, camera, and the speed of SG2, but it lacks sound and it feels way to fragile for me. I also have a I8910 omnia HD which also has stereo speakers so i am use to having a loud phone. I like the look and feel of the Xperia play, and also like the fact it feels solid in my hands and has stereo speakers, but i have never actually used one.. anyway before i go a head and send my SG2 back, i want to make sure i'm doing the right thing and what the pros and cons are.. cheers mate, any advice would appreciated.. nick..
guys i deside to buy .... optimus 3d hehe
i have a friend who have galaxy s II and when he play games eg real football you can make a coffe on the phone or you can make a sandwich xD
I am thinking about buying a Galaxy S II as a christmas present for my brother in law but I am missing a comparison and hope someone in here who have had both a Galaxy S II and an iPhone 4 can help me with a 1 on 1 comparison of the phones.
He haven't ever had an android or an iPhone and doesn't really have a preference but wants an iPhone because everyone else have one. I have an iPhone 4 at work and it doesn't impress me one bit and I would at anytime recommend the Galaxy S II as I have one, but would like an objective comparison!
Thanks in advance
I've used both and I still prefer the S2, and I like Apple products, generally (though not a fan of their philosophy of use.)
Id ask you to consider the Moto Droid RAZR as well, provided its released in time.
I would tell you to get the sgs2...however this isn't the place to ask this questions because as this is a sgs2 forum then people love the Samsung galaxy s2 for the obvious reasons xd

Dumbo needs hand holding in the Tech world then Apple .

SGS 2 is due an update to Ice Cream Sandwich within the next couple of months and this judged on the previews should push the SGS2 way ahead of the IPhone 4 .
Plus IOS5 update not much to write home about and latest IPhone model hardly changed leading me to believe the IPhone 5 may have an early release with a turbo charged user experience in order to fight off the Android dragon .

Wants better apps, then go for Apple.
Want's the customization of android in general then go for the SGS2.
I still have my iphone 3gs (because of my son's games only), tested the iphone 4 from my gf, and SG2 is a keeper!
Maybe Galaxy note or razr are other good options...?
Heres my view....i have both, the Galaxy S II is about 2 days old now though but i did have the originally Galaxy S and iPhone 3GS over a year ago.
Galaxy S II - He wants to Root, put on ROMS, OC/UV, and basically all the customizing/hacking things.
iPhone 4 - Simple and easy to use, amazing battery life, hassle free, great apps.
If he doesn't plan on doing all the rooting and customizations, i'd say go for an iPhone because really, android is all about the customizing.
Im still testing and finding the best option for battery life on my galaxy S II but it really doesn't compare to the iPhone. Not from what i see right now.
I personally got bored of iOS once again and made the change to the Galaxy s II since its the best android phone out right now along with the Galaxy Nexus but thats loads more expensive atm.
But heres one big facter......"He wants an iPhone" If he is leaning towards the iPhone and is more of a simplistic not that geeky dude, get him the iPhone. It would be a better choice.
There's also the music factor
iPhone allows external DAC like FiiO E7 to be used. -However, you're boxed into Apple's iTunes jail.
Samsung Galaxy S2 has a really crap DAC implementation and there's no known way to connect an external DAC via a pure I2s or PCM digital-out manner. Music sounds lifeless on the SGS2. No amount of EQ tweaking will fix the IMD and jitter.
So, if your brother is an audio geek, then Apple (despite the iTunes constraint) is still the better choice.
I ended up purchasing a Sansa player...but I'm still disappointed I can't use my Samsung as the music source because the range of excellent and beautiful audio apps, if it weren't for the crap sound of the pll-jitter DAC, would have made it a very pleasurable experience.

Ok so I already think the SGS2 is better than the iphone 4s for anyone of a number of reasons I can speak of but whats the big fuss over ICS?
what exactly does it / do you think it will offer that gingerbread doesnt? only I havent really seen anything that makes go oooooh must have that, so what am I missing?
Simple dude, it like this, iphone is like Rolls Royce car, exclusive for nerd. Stable and smooth.
But galaxy s2 is like Lamborghini Murcielago. Super speed, super customize, tweaking can make it crazy in performance. but u know this super car need more gas than rolls royce car rite?
Well, for a gift, better iphone, its look tidy and the performance is good, stable. It look expensive. Forget about sgs2, coz sgs2 is for crazy people like me who really want top performances. Go for iphone.

SGS2 has:
- Larger screen
- 100000:1 contrast ratio (IP4S is just 1400:1)
- Thinner
- Lighter
- 1gb of ram (IP4S is 512mb)
- 1200mhz cpu (800mhz on IP4S)
- OS customization!
- better 2MP front facing camera (IP4S is just 0.9MP)
- faster 21MB data speeds (IP4S is 14MB)
- External SD Slot (IP4S doesnt)
- HDMI Slot (IP4S doesnt)
- Bigger battery (longer too)
- Flash enabled browser
- Bluetooth file transfers
- Build Quality (see drop test on Youtube)
The IP4S was a very desperate release from apple to try & bridge the gap between themselves & Samsung - however, the SGS2 is 6 months older, has higher specs, more features & a greater performance.
Samsung & google are truly booming... I think apple are getting worried.
Android now has a much higher global market share than IOS, at current growth the Android Market will pass the Apple Appstore in 2012!
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
if he is a technology geek definetly s2 if not definetly iphone
Why are you asking us? You know your brother, give him what he wants. If he's a hipster and wants an iPhone, then you'd just make him a bit unhappy with the SGS, because he will have to use it. Maybe he will like it!
I am really surprised how reasonably fair and unbiased these posters are.
The very nature of this site is for enthusiasts and this section for those who want to get the best out of their SGSII.
To see quite a few recommend that the brother gets an IP4S is quite amazing. I wonder if a similar response would be given at a similar site for IP4S users.
My ex bird has suddendly decided she wants a smartphone, she knows absolutely nothing about phones, asked me what was the best thing to get i said an iPhone, usually id never recommend anyone getting one of those vastly overated locked down phones but if she got a SGSII she would only end up annoying me trying to get everything working whereas the iPhone is for dummies and everything works out of the box assuming it doesn't blow up when your on a flight

Edited my post for not reading properly.
My personal stance on this is, if person is not that technically(esp smartphone) literate, then give him an iphone. If he is a bit experienced in tech(pc and stuffs), you may try to give him a SGS2.
That's why my parents use iphones, and me and my sister use android, though she's trying wp7 right now.
Go for iphone if = you feel like you are living in 90s era, haha,
Hey, go for iphone. That gonna be precious present even, a solid exclusive gift.
My previous phone is ip4s, sold to my neighbour, shes a girl. I cant use iphone4s, outdated UI style make me boring a lot. Expensive outside but nothing inside. I love my ip4s, but i love sgs2 much more. Sgs2 match my need. You know why i bought sgs2? Because i read somewhere called it a 'legendary'.. 'beast'.. I admit with the title they gave.

Well, my grandparents bought my parents, my sisters and I a Nook Tablet for Christmas, I've got the kindle app and GO! Launcher on it, and some other stuff. One of my sisters uses it non-stop, and I sold my android phone two months ago. I'm saving for an Android phone or tablet that I can root, if I get a tablet I'm most likely getting a Xoom, but I don't know what Android phones have dualcore processors, can be easily rooted and have ICS roms. My max price is $500, I think I can save up that much.
Thanks,
Mephikun
My answer would either be either the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, or the Samsung Galaxy SII. The nexus because it is from the "nexus" line which is mostly for developing and customizing. I would also say the Nexus S but the only problem are the specs, which is a single core and not nearly as powerful as the two I have mentioned. The SII because it is still superior to the Galaxy Nexus in specs, but only that it does NOT have stock Ice Cream Sandwich. But with XDA's forums, custom roms have already been seen and experimented with. The Galaxy Nexus may be a bit over 500$ new but i believe that the SII is around 500$ or less.
Thank you. I will def. consider the SII (don't have a job sice I'm not old enough), but I can' tafford the nexus I'll leave this open
I agree with Dataslycer. The Galaxy Sll and Galaxy Nexus are among the greatest android phones out right now. Although I'd recommended Galaxy Nexus over the Sll, simpily because of the Nexus line it comes from. Upgrades first and whatnot is always nice. If those two phones are a chunkload too much hit up the Nexus S. I'm using it on ICS amd even though it's about a year old it is still brilliant AND a Nexus phone
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
htc evo 3d is also good.....
Motorola Defy
Is a very good phone for rooting and has a lot of options for Custom ROMs here in XDA..
Only drawback would be a 4" display compared to competition.
Else Defy rocks
look to the right side of the main page of this website (xda-developers.com).
you will see a small square that says POPULAR DEVICES, the galaxy s 2, galaxy nexus and the galaxy s 1 are almost ALWAYS at the top 3 positions.
shows how massive development is for these three devices.
and rooting any of those three is super easy because of samsung's great attitude towards devs. (they even gifted galaxy s 2's to cyanogenmod's devs)
The Samsung Galaxy S2 will be a very good choice!
I would suggest an EVO4G , I know some people will tell you it's old new. But it's still one of the Best and most versatile devices out there. With a ton of development still going on. Also, fairly cheap to pick up price wise.
Having access to both the Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus, I would say you can't go wrong with either option.
Sure, the Galaxy Nexus is dual core and has that wonderful 720p screen, but it is also a lot of phone to hold in your hand and 4G eats battery like no tomorrow. I still love it, though.
If I had to find something cheaper today I would track down a Nexus S. It runs Android 4.0 just fine and is much easier to find ROMs and mods for (right now). It also runs on any US wireless carrier except Verizon, while only Verizon has the Galaxy Nexus (today).
I have the Galaxy SII. It's a great phone and it's so easy to root and install roms.
I had an EVO 4g, but the GSII is a much better and faster device.
I have a Droid X and i rooted it two days ago, so easy, even though the Droid X is like a phone of the past already i still think its a great phone.
Galaxy S II. Or GNexus for Verizon/non-Tmobile AWS carrier. Get a Samsung.

I agree galaxy nexus is a great phone. But 35% of consumer dont like 4.3 to 4.6 inches devices. So , nexus s is great phone to get if you like 4 inches. Personally, single core vs dual cores is ridiculous only root mod will care. And, fyi android 4.0 os run fine with single core, not to many apps runs dual core. Their more exclusive apps to xperia play and tegra 2 then dual core. Unless game developers play favorite i wont single core dying anytime soon.
Hi my girlfriend has birthday next month and she was talking latelly thank she'd like to have a smartphone because she'd love to surf internet on the go, listen to music ( she's using some old mp3 player atm ), check e-mail etc.
She's been using a classic candy bar phones for years and I was thinink that as her bday is comming I could get smartphone for her as a gift.
But I'm not really sure which model would suit a total newbie in the smartphone world ? She's never used a touch screen phone, she only played littlebit with mine Nexus 7.
I use HTC HD7 personally and it comes with Windows Phone 7 but i thought Android would be better for her because of more apps, etc.
Is there anything you could recommend ?
Battery life longer than 20h would be great ( mine HD7 last like 26-28h )
Thanks !
White Galaxy s II or III depends on your budget .
the smooth interface and lightweight design make these some of the best performing phones right out of the box to date battery life depends on usage but you can ussually get bout 16+ hours of normal use which is very good for android+ the large display. If it were me definetly the galaxy s III

I gave mine an HTC One S (blue), after having used the iphone 3gs for 2 year, she's very satisfied with the One S, great battery life too up to 5 days. Sense really is a great addition to android, especially for non-techies but if you get the one S be sure to get the snapdragon 4 variant not the the s3 variant.
From my experience , ladies that are generally not geeky prefer something that fits their hands, like some 3.7-4" htc. And on top of that if its pink... well, lets just say she'll be more than glad
I recently suggested htc wildfire to a friend of mine who never had android before. Shes now a successful convert to our beloved OS
Yup I've decided to go for Samsung Galaxy Mini 2.
Unfortunatelly resolution isn't the greatest but it's is a really nice little device. She had old nokia anyway so for her that resolution is going to be a huge step forward anyway.
Perfect size, nice and round edges and it's really good looking and it wasn's super expensive either. She'll be happy with it I'm sure.
Thank you guys for all sugestions !

My girlfriend has a Galaxy S (the original one) and she loves it. The fact that it's running Android meant she was able to turn the home screen and app drawer into a hideous mess of pink and sparkles...
I'd recommend skipping that for the S2 though. Absolutely AMAZING smartphone, near perfection, and you get ICS on it now so it's faster and more functional. I'd skip the Galaxy 'Ace' range as most people I know who have one struggle with it due to it being a little bit too underpowered for what it's trying to run.

Haha that happened to my girlfriends Iphone after i jailbroke it and taught her how to theme it. The next day she shows me her phone and its all baby blue and pink all over the place. I keep telling her all the theming stuff is easier on android but girls tend to like the iphone because it is more of a fashion accessory and dont tend to care too much about what their phone can do.
Well in some ways iPhone can do more though, there's way more on the app store, you just have less control over the fundamentals.

Note 2 or S3
Just what you prefer.
I suggest you go to a phonestore and play around with some devices because everyone's opinion is different. Some will say you have to buy Sony, others will say you need Samsung, htc, etc...
Choose what you like the most yourself, and don't go by other people opinions.

Well, TiesB basically said what I also would suggest. Go to phonestores and take a closer look to the phones which have drawn your attention.
The good thing about Android is that there are many phones with different hardware. Everyone has different preferences. Look at your own preferences and take the phone which matches most.

Thanks all, just wanted everyone's opinion. I messed around with a few today, but thank you for your input!

I have four options for you:
1) Samsung Galaxy S3 (Too mainstream for me. Great phone anyway)
2) Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (If you are okay with the extra large screen, its a winner in term of specs, raw power, battery life)
3) HTC One X+ or XL (not sure if its available on the US yet)
4) Sony Xperia T (Sony's flagship device. Pretty nice IMO.)
With either of these, you will be satisfied. I have noted that there is a current trend of devs moving to Xperia devices, mostly because seems like Sony is making great phones lately and they are becoming dev-friendly. Just my .02
How much budget do you have? If you are going for high end phone, I think you should buy the new Samsung Galaxy Note 2 as it performs well and has satisfying battery life...If you don't like the gigantic 5.5 inch screen, then your second choice should be Iphone 5 or Galaxy S3...These are my recommendations, hope they help :victory:
All nice choices. I wish note 2 had NFC though.

Thanks all! I think I am going to go with the s3 because I heard it had best battery life for a phone that can do so much, and I heard so much positive things about it, I think I will have to try it. Thanks for everyone opinions though!
Evo 4g.
A phone is a personal phenomenon , something which i like may not appeal to some other person !! Though going by my personal experience i will definitely suggest S3 , great phone from every aspect including the price nowadays (S3 prices have come down by atleast 80 to 100 $) !!
