this may be a dumb question but GB releases and froyo radios? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If the gingerbread radios are causing all sorts of problems can we just stick to froyo radios in like das bamf 2.0 and avoid the brick? im sorry if this is a dumb question but im not familiar with the functionality differences between the two if htey are even comparable at all?

Froyo based roms only work on Froyo based radios and GB based roms work only on GB based radio.

You're correct in your observation. I think the CM7 team jury rigged the froyo radio to work because no leaks were in play at the time.

Yes because technically the radio's are not Android version specific. Eventually when there is a stable GB radio (Which would technically just be an upgraded radio) CM7 will be built around that.

2.6.32 Kernel...

I know every dev is hard at work on trying to get the kernel to work with our phones. Im just wondering if we are all pissing in the wind or is there really hope that we could see the kernel at some point?
Thanks
Have faith in our devs. They ve done all they've done, just leave them to do what they want.
Sent from TT with LauncherProPlus and Swype.
what's good about this kernel ?
What does this new kernel do? allow us to OC higher? Sorry for the noobie question
Android 1.6/2.0/2.1 required a kernel that was based off of the 2.6.29 linux kernel, 2.2 requires 2.6.32. That's one of the main hold ups for our 2.2 development.
We'll likely run into the same problem when 3.0 is released since it'll likely require a newer kernel as well.

My current Froyo ROM has a .29 kernel.
Yeah how are we successfully running Froyo on 2.6.29 if 2.6.32 is required?
Sent from my Cyanogen Froyo using XDA App
He probably misspoke. By my understanding, Froyo comes with the 2.6.32 kernel and it would ease development of the 2.2-based ROMs if they could use the proper kernel with them.
You're using a ROM based on Froyo yet still using the 2.6.29 kernel, so it's not working as well as it could be. I believe this also affected all the things that required "fixing" in the 2.2-based ROMs (5MP camera, MMS, ...) which if they were actually able to use the real 2.2 kernel, they might not have had to find workarounds.
I could be mistaken about some of this, please don't flame me.

for the record ,, the big secret about the camera workin is using the libs from a 2.1 rom haha
The Kernel
Good information, is it at all possible to build a 2.6.32 kernel for the eris?
Correct me if i'm wrong but wouldn't we need a new vendor tree for 2.6.32
^ I don't think so.
And yeah the froyo kernel would be nice... would really speed up development for roms since it would basically fix the issues. If we'd had a froyo kernel from the beginning for example the camera would have worked immediately.
possibly this?
found this looking for a possible Acess Point Wifi tether kernel
while looking for eris kernels I checked out this guy's page... and seems he has a file for the heroc (eris) that is .32... says it's modified from another phone, supersonic, wasn't that the incredible codename?
hxxp://github.com/darchstar
Darchstar is a hero dev, his kernels won't work with ours I wish though.

Isn't the Eris desirec?
Yes it is. Those won't work with our phone.
They are close, but not close enough.

this made me lol. Do you actually believe that there is any chance in hell for the eris to get gingerbread. not in a million years... unless they dumb it down majorly to be put on eris it wont happen

Thats what they said about Froyo
The Eris and Hero are a LOT closer alike than you might think and you're more familiar with darchstar's work than you realize. Ever wonder why many Eris ROMs say "Sprint"initially?

[Q] Which radio version is everyone using?

Hi you guys. Please forgive a n00b girl's question... But...
I have had my fascinate for a while (Oct 2010) but at times the reception was horrible and I absolutely came to despise the stock Touchwiz ROM.
So, just as I was getting to my wits' end (and jump ship to a better phone), the official froyo release came along and most of my cures were answered. In an attempt to get the froyo upgrade to take (I had the dreaded update failure issue), I've rooted my fascinate and experienced the joys of custom ROMs, kernels, and mods.
So, now, I am LOVING the fascinate... But the signal still seems to suck compared to other VZW 3G phones.
So... What radio versions work best? I have the ED01 running on mine using the Evil Fascination 3.5.1 and OTB 1.3 kernel.
Do any seem to get better reception?
Thanks, guys! Keep up the good work!

I have updated PRL... Haven't tried EC01. Is it better than the ED01 that comes with the froyo OTA?
I'm using ED01 with the Community ROM. My device seems little faster with GPS lock than EC01 was but every device acts different.

The conventional wisdom is that ec01 was just a leaked-and-renamed version of what was shortly thereafter released as ed01.
It's possible that ed01 was a slightly later build... I've seen no consensus on either being better than the other, but ed01 was the one that got officially released.
More recently (last week), vzw pushed an ota update to ed03 which included a new modem. you can get ed03 by following the same instructions found here to "get to ed01 quickly". We've not yet seen a flashable packaging of the ed03 modem afaik.
I'm running the ed03 modem, it runs fine but I can't say I've seen obviously better reception than ed01.

Senseless GB roms

Sorry for the question but aside from Gingerbean, are there any other GB roms that are desensed, specifically bamf or gingeritis? Thanks.
Sent from my ThunderBolt using XDA App
CM7 alpha is a GB rom I believe just runs off of special radios
CM7 runs off of any Froyo radio, I do believe.
Yep, I'm running cm7 right now with surprisingly no Bluetooth,WiFi,4g or GPS issues. Just wasn't sure if there was a reason to move over to one of the newer GB roms now that the new radio is out. Comments?
Sent from my ThunderBolt using XDA App
I am using BAMF 2.0 with the new radio and the 3.0 kernal and everything is dandy for me I'd say go down that route if you want GB there is just less themeing options right now but it's a new beast for sure.
If you don't want the bloat, stick with CM7.

[Q] Radios

I see that in the Dev section there are several Roms that appear to use a radio greater than ED05.
What are the current radios for stock and leaked?
Thanks
A partial answer is that EH09 and EI20 are system leaks radios.
So, in short I will be sticking with ED05 for the time being until I sort it out and find any information on stability.

Best radios, according to the majority of users are ec 09 and ed 05
tsm res1.2, TKSGB 11-06, lag fix
EDO5 is what I am currently using and have noticed better battery performance. I haven't seen anything of the ones you have mentioned. The EDO5 is the latest official release. I would stick with that. New radios or basebands that are leaked could possibly not be finished or cause horrible battery times. I would stick with what you have. Just my two cents. If anyone has tested one of these newer releases then post it here. I am open to using new radios if it makes battery life better than the ED05 baseband.

The roms based on eh09 and ei20 are from other galaxy s phones other than fascinate (mesmerize if not mistaken) which our awesome devs have ported for our phones. The radios cant be used on the fascinate so stick with one of the tried and true fascinate radios.

I have been out of the Fascinate loop for a little over a month. Let me just say that the devs here and an unlocked bootloader really make development much quicker.
What I am saying is that a bunch has gone on here in my absence.

between eh03, ec09, and ed05... ec09 gives me the best results >eh03>ed05. I have seen quite few people reporting they get the best speeds with eh03 but im not seeing it. I suggest trying all three and determine what works best for your area.

I think I will test ec09 and just see what I get. I'm not that impressed with ed05. I feel like I got better performance from eb01.

Not that anyone cares but I have been testing ec09 radio all afternoon and I get substantially better download and upload speeds than I did with ed05. Thanks for the advice guys.
