[Q] USB broken, how to restore to stock KA6 - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
My Vibrant's USB has stopped working and I believe it is a hardware fault (I tried on different ports on different computers, and ensured that Samsung drivers are installed on the PC).
I am currently on Trigger 3.2 final and would like to get back to the vanilla stock KA6 unrooted (ROM, kernel, baseband, modem, recovery, everything) before sending it in to Samsung for repair. But unfortunately, I cannot restore to stock without ODIN which needs USB.
I don't have a Nandroid backup. Any ideas what are my options to restore to stock unrooted with stock recovery at this point?
Thanks so much!

How are you charging it?

The phone charges just fine, but is not recognized as a USB device by the PC ... Basically, it says that the connected device is corrupt.

Then you need to uninstall and remove all the Samsung drivers you installed on your pc, reboot, then re-install the drivers.

I have a second Vibrant that accesses USB just fine, so it is not a driver problem ...

could you put a stock rom on your external sd then push it to your internal then flash it?

Thats exactly what I was thinking. You could bluetooth files to the phone and then flash. You just can't ODIN unless you get the USB werkin. Good luck!

Success - I did a CWM install of Bionix R1 final to get to 2.1, flashed the JFD kernel and modem to get to JFD, and finally did the nandroid restore from the official JFD image thread here on XDA, and then unrooted the phone. Have sent the phone back to Tmobile for a replacement - and of course I forgot to remove the Zagg protector before mailing it in

How did you UNROOT the phone?

delete superuser.apk unroots phone.

You can download a rom via the rom manager and then try to go from there.
Also note, you could download a rom via the XDA app via the phones browser.
try to factor format by dialing this hidden phone number "*2767*3855#", note that this will work on a TM Vibrant rom, such as 2.2 or 2.1 only. I have used this to wipe the internals and it's like a great number to write down. That number will not work on a GB rom.

download that to your phone then flash it

Nevermind, I'm an idiot!

Arg... i have the same issue... though i cant find the JFD kernel and modem.
Bionix R1 - check
JFD kernel -?
JFD modem -?
Nandroid -?
Did you try USB after you did all of this?

Never Mind...

Can someone please help, I'd appreciate it was a gift from my gf and I really hope its not bricked a few days after I got it.
You might want to check your files for Odin then try to odin again or just try to get into recovery and flash another rom
Find yourself a 2.1 kernal and flash that. You probably still have a 2.2 kernal on the phone.
Well when I get into recovery How do I flash a rom... I cant stick any files onto my phones memory and it doesnt detect my external sdcard file named update.zip.
Is there a way to transfer files onto the phone without boooting it.
If you have a sd card reader you can put that in your pc and download a rom on it but I'm not sure how you would copy it onto the internal sd I surprised you don't already have a 2.2 rom on there but there are a couple of roms on the team whisky website that can be loaded with odin you could try one of those
http://www.teamwhiskey.com/
Edit: this man could be correct but I flashed gb from sombionix I had voodoo enabled and used odin to jfd and didn't have this problem but he might be right
you didnt disable voodoo... download eugenes froyo that doesnt brick flash it through odin and then flash back to whatever you want
I had the same problem using JFD Odin ROM. It worked for me when i used JI4 ROM.

This is the correct answer. I always do this and it solves all problems since it comoletely wipes, but after eugenes I then odin jfd and then I start the flashing again.
By the way, you can send him his 5 bucks now.

Flash this in Odin after you disconnect every USB device, take battery out of phone for few minutes, reboot your computer, only plug your phone into a new USB slot.

My bad man, I forgot to add that It flashes the stock 2.2 froyo. I just cant use my internal sd card. So all i can do is use wifi, service features, but cannot download apps and other stuff like that. The build number: Froyo.UVJK2 is the one it works almost as usual.
So far I have tried to format the sd card and even restore factory reset but nothing has worked.

Think I semi-bricked my phone. ODIN does not seem to work in my case. Help needed!

I was using this thread to flash my phone until I got to flashing a custom ROM.

I try to put my phone to stock every time but it does not seem to work.

Also, be sure to flash the right ROM.. Verizon Fascinate and Telus Fascinate are 2 different phones..
Well... now theres a problem as ODIN won't see my phone in download mode. :/
Reinstall your USB drivers, and see if your cable is seated properly. If you can get into Download mode, most cables used will allow Odin to recognize. You may have to Odin back to a different ROM like Neo said.
Make sure you have the latest version of Odin

So can you get into download mode and use ODIN to flash or not?
Are you still stuck at bootloader? Please be as descriptive as you can.
And no, I never heard of "cannot unmount USB storage" CWM... I've heard of mounting issues, but not unmounting...
IMHO, I think your best option here is to get ODIN working, then flash to a stock ROM with stock Kernel with PIT (Repartition) then flash CWM 2.5.
I dont see why you would need to unmount? what you can do is remove the battery cover remove the sd card. with the battery still out plug the phone into your usb and hold the volume down button. does it go into download mode then?
Then can Odin see your phone?
Also worst case try a different PC all together.
Are you on VZW or Telus?
I can get into download mode and use ODIN yes.
I am no longer stuck at the bootloader and can boot into stock froyo with ODIN.
I use ODIN to flash stock ROM and kernel, and everytime I flash back CWM 2.5. It won't let me install any ROMs. It gives me a status 7 error and aborts.
CWM just won't work
In case you didn't know, CWM can mount USB just like android so I don't have to boot into the OS to place a file. under mounts>mount USB storage>Unmount/Mount
Everytime I press unmount, the screen blinks and takes me back to the previous screen.
This is a Telus Fascinate.
I had a similar problem. Turns out my USB cable was culprit. Several others have had similar problems. Try a different USB cable.

also one thing i noticed is your using an older CWM, which rom are you trying to flash? If it is an MTD like CM7 then you should use the cwm 3 or 4 fixed for cm7

Tried the fix, ODIN starts and then fails in the middle saying NAND write failed.
What could this mean? ODIN fails to install the fix :/
Tried a different cable, so cable is not the issue here.
Can we get one thing straight here though? The phone is not bricked as I can get into ODIN and flash what seems to be only stock files?
As long as Odin can see it you can always go to stock. As long as Odin is ok there is hope.
As i have a Verizon Fassy, I may not be much more help.
Worst case find a Tellus Rom that you can Odin and do that.

Bricked S2

New user yay
So here's the dealio guys, I've been researching about rooting and custom ROMs and such since I got my S2 (i777) a few months ago. I really don't like Touchwiz, and the stock ICS look is just better. So I found a nice-looking ROM (the AOKP ROM), rooted my phone with no problems using Siyah/Odin, and went ahead and put the ROM in an external SD card that I bought just for this purpose. So I boot into recovery mode (with ROM Manager), and then... nothing. I try to boot up my phone but it just flashes the start screen showing my model number, then just turns right back off. I've tried taking out my battery, still no dice. BUT, I can still get into download mode (but not recovery). So is there any way to restore the backup I made before installing the ROM using the download mode?
Thanks!

yea, in order to flash a custom ROM, you need custom recovery, ahh hell, been so long i forgot about having a rooted system required or not.
think you do, so should be able to get a rooted package, flash that, enter recovery and flash the ROM that you like.
Maybe someone will chime in and refresh my memory on the rooted system requirement.
U can flash a custom kernel .tar with Odin. There are some siyah tar files floating around. Or u could make a .tar yourself if u really wanted to. Once flashed it'll have cwm built in and u can flash whatever u want.

You only need root to install and use the Mobile Odin app, which is used for installing a custom kernel without tripping the flash counter. Once you've got Mobile Odin, download the custom kernel (e.g. Siyah) you want (ICS kernel if you're gonna install an ICS rom, same for GB), extract the zImage to your phone, and use Mobile Odin to install it. Note that if you're currently running GB and flash an ICS kernel, your phone won't boot but you can still get into CWM, which is all that matters because then you can flash the ICS rom of your choice and then your phone will boot.
Alternatively, you can do what Phalanx said and flash a custom kernel using PC version of Odin. Only difference between this and using Mobile Odin is you trip the flash counter, which can be fixed in any ICS rom by using the TriangleAway app.
The custom kernel will include CWM, which can then be used to flash any ROM/mod; in fact CWM is the ONLY safe method of flashing/wiping/restoring/backing up anything from that point forward.

Bricked S2 too!
I finally bricked my first phone. Its been a long ride but it caught up to me. I have had three different android phones within about 4 years and have successfully rooted all three myself and have successfully flashed them over and over close to 1000 times between all three phones including modems, kernals, gapps, themes etc. So what gives? Why today? To be honest I don't know. But here is what happened...
The past few days I have been going back and forth between different kernals for this device to try to get something that won't freeze up. ( I liked browsing on this phone but I would get freeze ups and therefore would flash something new to try and resolve it.) Today my phone froze so I tried a simple reboot. The boot then did a freeze on the kernal's "intro" picture. It wasn't a bootloop it just frooze. (I was on XWLPT with Skyfire Kernal). I decided to reboot into recovery and flash a different kernel. I flashed NEAK The flash went halfway then stuck and froze. I rebooted to try to get back to the phone's main screen. This time it would not boot. I couldn't tell if it was in bootloop or was froze. I went back into recovery. Here I should of wiped everything but in the back of my mind I thought I could just do it in odin if I lost recovery. So I tried flashing Siyah for sammy roms. This is when I lost everything. It froze in cmw on the flash again but this time when I tried going back into recovery it stayed on the Galaxy SII screen. So I put the phone in download mode and started Odin up. When trying to flash anything in Odin I got stuck on nand write start! I never heard of this. I thought Odin would work as this is how I rooted the phone when I first got it. Last thing I did was install kies which couldn't even connect to the phone. So all I am left with is download mode and taking way more caution when flashing. I think it may have been a case of the brickbug. Even though I was on a I9100 rom and using "safe" kernels I believe something happened to lock me out from writing anything to the phone.
As long as you don't mind overwriting any data on the device you can use Kies for a complete restore. Download the latest version from Samsung, then click on the Tools selection, then "Firmware Upgrade and Initalization." You'll need your devices model number and serial number from underneath the battery. Follow the directions to put the device in download mode and proceed. You'll end up with a new factory-fresh reload.

Now this i didn't know. My SII has been acting really weird ever since I unrooted. It won't let me update my firmware past 2.3.4 for some reason. So if I did this, it will most likely fix that problem?
Alright, I connected my phone to Kies, and went to Tools>Firmware Upgrade and Initialization, and it says my device does not support initialization. It also says this right under my device info:
Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies

Ugh, really getting tired of this. Why is my phone being retarded? I don't think I want to bother rooting anymore, it seems like more of a hassle than a good thing. I really don't want to have to break my phone to get a replacement with my warranty. How do I fix this, guys?!
