Just to give you guys some background, I had a rooted Fascinate and I loved it, not to mention is was extremely fast. I like the stock TB but I feel like I could pull some better battery life with rooting and get rid of the bloat. However, while I was extremely familiar with rooting and flashing roms and kernels on the Fascinate (changed ROMS and kernels almost every week or two), I have never done it through ADB on the TB. Everyone seems to say they haven't needed to root their TB so they haven't, so I am getting mixed feedback on me. So...either persuade me to root or not to root...
Root or no?
Root it, manually, end of story.
If you don't like how it is, you can always go back to a completely stock, unrooted state.

thats what I am thinking. My fascinate was blazing fast with root I can't imagine how much faster this thing should be rooted
Ya man, why are you asking questions instead of rooting this very second!!
But anyway, jump on in.... The water is bamf
Do it. Just make sure all the files are in the same directory as ADB and follow the directions closely. Took me less than a half hour last night.

I was 100% unfamiliar with rooting. I actually had never heard of it until buying the thunderbolt. I bought the phone just wanting something new and fast, as my old moto droid was basically unusably slow. I started reading threads online about battery life on the TB, because mine was sucking, and time and time again people talked about rooting to gain battery life. I called a good friend of mine who is a computer whiz, and he walked me through the process.
Four weeks later, my rooted Thunderbolt and me have been through 4 Roms (3, really, since the 4th was me going back to bamf remix), a number of kernels, and a whole lot of happiness.
Semi-Long story, I know, but i'm just giving you the winded speech, when really i coulda just said ROOT THAT PHONE!!!!!
So, what I would say to you is this. While i may be new to this whole rooting thing, i've always been a tech junkie. I'm incredibly obsessive about my gadgets running fast and efficient. I couldn't be happier that I rooted this phone, and I firmly believe any android device I purchase in the future I will root. I've gained battery life, speed, and customizability. I damn near brought my phone from useful to necessary. You won't regret rooting the TB.
My first rom was bamf remix 1.6.3. I followed that with twisted sense, then VirusROM TB, and now i'm back to bamf. I actually preferred VirusROM as a whole, but there were a couple issues that were dramatic enough for me to switch back to bamf. But i won't rant about that here. That's for another topic.
Root your phone. The TB just loves it.
(sorry for being so winded, i'm just excited about it all! =)
My last phone was the Incredible. Awesome phone even by todays standards. It was rooted. I didn't have this Tbolt long enough to kill the battery before rooting it so I can't speak to battery life gains. You only need ADB to root it. You don't need it to flash new ROMs or kernels or mods. Clockworkmod recovery does that for you. Plus, you'll find that the CPU in the Tbolt is possibly one of the most overclockable chips in history. I'm humming along at 1.42ghz with no problem and ramping it up to 1.6 or even 1.9 isn't at all unheard of. If there was ever a a Droid made for rooting, this phone is that phone.
I rooted my phone an hour after getting it from my local store. ADB is not hard to do (it was my first time too) you just need to follow the steps to the T. My Tbolt is opened up and having fun with all the new ROMs I'm putting on it. Loving it

First of all, sorry if anything I post is just noob to the max. I have been using my Eris with official software since I bought it. I just did the OTA to 2.1 and it is complete garbage. The phone does not work half the time, texts take forever to send, random lag, etc. Verizon **** the bed it seems like with testing.
With that said, I want to know if I can root my phone with this OTA 2.1 already on it? Also, will rooting it and installing a sweet ROM be better than the OTA 2.1 or also have random glitches that drive me nuts. If I root it, am I stuck with rooted stuff or am I able to go back to the official garbage.
I read many threads and searched here and there, nothing really answered my questions so bear with me. Thanks.
Spend ten minutes (or less) reading the eris development stickys and you will answer all your questions. I know you said you did but I also know for a fact all of the information is there to be found. None the less
Yes you can still root the 2.1 ota as the bootloader was not changed like it was with the leaks.
No ROM is perfect and most are bound to have their small glitches but i think everyone will agree that most custom roms are better than stock
Yes you can revert from rooted 2.1 to stock 1.5 but I think at that point you will keep getting the OTA update notification
Also try a task killer, a lot of people say they make it worse but if configured properly will add hours to your battery life, if you get a task killer and you set it up just make sure to set any system processes (com.htc, com.android, etc) to ignore because when you kill those it takes a lot of juice to get it all back up and running again.
Hope this helped
Thanks for the answers. I use TasKiller, have been for a while, my battery life is fine for the most part. I'm going to root my phone today and use the Evil Eris ROM to keep it familiar.
use the ema app to root. link in my sig.
Before I got my first Android I was a dedicated Iphone lover and I swore nothing would beat it until I got my hands on a Nexus 1 which was my first android and it just happened to be rooted and I had no clue what flashing was but when I figured it out ive been a crack flasher ever since.... So what's your story?
Upon a quick glance at the question and then the "high guy" avatar, I thought someone was asking for drugs.
I used to be until CM7 came out for the INC and then I stayed with that. With the TB I was switching between CM7 & BAMF, but i've stuck with BAMF for a couple weeks now.
I used to flash my old WinMo 6.5 Omnia, and when I came over to Droid, it made it that much easier to really go nuts, there was just SO much cool stuff to play with. I'm on a quest for the "perfect" rom. So far, plenty of close calls, but there's always that little something that I want, or that isn't quite right. I'd LOVE LOVE LOVE to teach myself to build ROMS so I don't have to hound these poor devs for mods all the time.
I guess I'm a flashing addict.
Lol, I flash a new ROM practically every day.

Ditto. I actually stuck with a single rom for about 2 months with my Droid X on Liberty 1.5 with the EpicBlue theme. That was a major record for me! I trend to install, on average, probably 5 roms/themes a week on my tbolt.

i used to flash like twice a day on my OG till i discovered MIUI and then i started slowing down, now im much more moderate with flashing, back in the day though without nandroid, i wouldve been lost lol
The thunderbolt is my first android and I rooted and flashed it the day I got it. I flashed it with the perfect storm 1.4. I thought I was going to flash a bunch of other roms. But as it turns out, I haven't found anything in this rom that makes me want to figure out how to make a backup of my current setup. And if i don't have a way to get back to my current setup (all Apps and data), i dont really feel like flashing a different rom.
My gadget hacking days have an origin way before android phones. Started back when I was flashing custom firmwares on my PSP. The reason I got an android phone was for rooting and customization. None of my gadgets usually last more than a day or so before they're hacked some way or another
Definitely have enjoyed flashing on the Thunderbolt...although now pretty much the only time I flash is when Bamf gets updated...
I may or may not have a problem lol
First smartphone I ever had was an HTC Eris. I had never even heard of rooting till a few months after I had gotten it. I had just seen it mentioned somewhere on the internet, and I decided to research it (technology is a passion of mine). I was definitely a crack flasher with my Eris (mainly because tazz updated his ROM every day ) Then I had gotten a Droid 2. Not as bad of a crack flasher with that after liberty came out.
I just got my tbolt 2 weeks ago. I had it rooted within 4 hours of buying it. I am definitely not a crack flashed with it. I still can't decide if I want to keep it stock (or at least plain jane) or if I want a custom ROM. Right now, I'm using das BAMF 2.0 with adrynalynes 2.0 kernel, and it seems promising.

Everything you need is stickied in the dev section. Read the root how to at least three times through before doing anything. Make sure you can "see" your phone via adb. If you're still unsure, watch some youtube videos. Rooting the Tbolt is not hard, just be thoroughly prepared beforehand. If you run into problems, ask for help in IRC chat (you'll get the fastest response there) or here. Good luck

If I did it you can.Took me a couple of times trying but eventually got it. Now used about 3 different Roms.
I went from the Eris to TB and I was a little apprehensive at first. Watch the "How to root thunderbolt" video on YouTube. I strongly suggest doing it through adb as the experience is vital. Good luck! I'm running Gingeritis 1.0, just as a suggestion.

I'm a newbie too, just as long as you backup everything ti should be ok.
Thank god for forums, that's the bottom line, there's always someone here to help you.
I'm gonna say read EVERYTHING 3 times. There's a lot of ROMs, a lot of radios, and plenty of ways of ending up with a phone that that doesn't work (not bricked, just a dud setup.) There are ways to brick it you wouldn't guess, but I think those days are behind us. Any of the gingerbread builds will have quirks. The froyo builds are generally solid, especially the MR2 builds. Just gotta play around.
The easiest method being trying to root with an uncharged battery .
i agree with what everyone has said (actually i don't know anything about the battery mention). only thing i would add is when you do decide to root, do it when you won't be rushed. I rooted via 1-click a DINC, but the tbolt was much different and all together a much better experience getting to know adb. If you know a little bit of command line, you will understand what you are doing (mostly). but even if you don't know hardly anything about command line, all the instructions i found give you the commands.
The Eris was a one-click root correct? The Thunderbolt rooting process will definitely take longer than the Eris rooting process, but I wouldn't say any specific step is difficult. After you're rooted the process of flashing a specific ROM or radio should be the same. Just remember to rename radios PG05IMG.zip and flash in Hboot, and usually do a data wipe before you flash a new ROM.
The entire rooting process will probably take around an hour, or even more if you're not familiar with adb. Just follow the directions closely, and be patient.
Learn basic commands for adb shell and download/install/update it on your computer.
The biggest pain in the ass I've found on ROMs for the TB is the radio.
If you want a froyo based/CM/AOSP ROM it takes one type of radio a Gingerbread based ROM is a different type of radio.
Simple commands in adb can reboot from recovery (clockwork recovery mod) to bootloader to change radios. IF you remember to place it on the root of your sd card.
Nandroid backup, Nandroid backup, Nandroid backup.
The devs are really starting to put out some A1 ROMs out there.
Just like Ford v. Chevy v. Dodge, everyone has their favorites. Backup and flash away....
Been there. I used Auto root(MR1) which was very easy. Just take your time and it walks you right through the process. Took about 30 minutes, tops. And unroot is even easier and only takes 5 minutes.
I was kinda scared at first also but I have rooted and flashed ROMs on 2 thunderbolts now , it is a fairly easy process , just have to follow the instructions and you will be fine , biggest scare I had was flashing radios , after that its a piece of cake , Good Luck !!!!
Awesome Phone after it is rooted and the bloatware is gone , better battery life....
I rooted through ADB, after that, I've never used it again. I flash roms almost daily. Nothing to be scared of. If you do a nandroid before you flash, even if something bad happens, you can always go right back to a known working condition by doing a nandroid restore. I know it's scary at first, but once you do it, you'll be flashing roms and radios all the time! It's gets addicting, and it's actually fun
Like anything for the first time, you might be apprehensive beforehand but once it's under your belt you'll think back and wonder why you didn't do it sooner. Follow the procedure, get it in your head and pull the trigger.
Its not for everyone but it's not that difficult either.
I was a Newbie with ADB too, I held off hoping for a 1 click method, and then got impatient. I read the guides several times (as mentioned in earlier replies) before I started, and I double and triple checked every command line as I did them... It was a bit nerve wracking, but I managed to get through it without a scratch. And about 2 weeks ago I was able to walk my buddy through it over the phone from 1500 miles away. As long as you're slow, methodical and careful, there's not much to be worried about.
I have been using the HTC evo on sprint for 2 years. My girlfriend saw the note and fell in love, and I was intrigued by the huge screen, since I use my phone more as a smartphone and less as an actual phone. So we went to ATT and bought a couple and are giving them a try, but haven't cancelled our sprint yet. She seems to like it a lot, haven't heard a complaint yet.
Out of the box, I was impressed with the screen for sure. Didn't liek the way the default browser handled zooming/word wrap on a lot of web pages, but a new browser fixed that. Battery life was good, but not great compared to what I was used to on some roms on my rooted evo. I am trying to learn to use the S-pen more. I haven't been blown away by the Note, but my Evo sure does seem small now.
I have been itching to root this thing and start installing some roms, but obviously wanted to wait until I was sure I was keeping it.
A couple questions, if I stay with ATT, I will be porting my sprint number. Will rooting the phone or installing a rom cause any issues with the porting of my old number? The Evo was super easy to root and flash roms, and also super easy to unroot in case it ever needed service, which it hasn't yet. Is it just as easy to root/unroot the Note? More concerned about the unrootingt, I am sure I can figure out the root process from the stickies, but I didn't see anything for unrooting, maybe I missed it. Just want to make sure I can get the phone serviced if I need to.
Thanks!

Hey so, I recently switched from Verizon to AT&T. I kept my old number and rooted my note within three days of getting it. Haven't experienced any issues whatsoever and I think you will be blown away once you get hip deep into the Roms that are available. The only problem that I have come across is that I can't stop flashing new roms now.
But, it is super easy, really great guides on here and on Youtube if you're the visual type. I don't think you'll regret it. My only advice is just reading through the threads (or at least the last few pages) before flashing just to see the experiences of others and what to expect before you give it the go ahead. The rooting guides have guides toward the bottom on how to unroot and that's on youtube too.
Hope that helped.

I had rooted my evo and flashed so many roms I can't even count. So it's not that rooting/flashing scares me, and I am sure I can figure it out with the guides just fine. I was more worried about voiding my warranty or whatever. More so with this phone then with my evo for some reason.
There is an Odin image somewhere on these forums that will get you back to stock. It's pretty easy to do.
So far, this phone is the best phone I've ever had.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717
yes you can restore your phone to stock if needed (warranty is only reason I can think of). You can do it w/your PC and the stock ROM file as you can see in one of the forum stickies, I think the development forum.
Just get on one of the latest ICS leaked ROMS...I highly recommend the OnlyOne ROM/MOD since it is the based on the latest leak with a few key mods/etc added. Runs gREAt. And has some Samsung Galaxy III add-ons ported (i.e. new Touchwiz UI, S Note, S Voice, tethering). The OTHER ROMS are also solid and have more theming and custom stuff.
Get a PC then use it to Root, install CWM and then install your ROM of choice.
I like staying on Stock stuff and tried to on my Note for a few weeks but there were too many benefits to rooting, etc.
Have fun. Again...the ICS Leaked ROMS are sweet.
The Note, and most Samsung phones for that matter, are among the hardest to hard brick and some of the easiest to return back to stock as a result. Samsung phones are also very easy to root. The Note is no exception. As others have stated, we have an ODIN package to bring you back from everything but a hard brick. And you're not likely to do that so long as you stay on these forums and not the n7000's. That's pretty much the only way people have bricked their devices beyond saving. And even then you can send a hard brick in to some site and save it with JTAG repairs for $50, which is much cheaper than a replacement phone.
Also, in addition to the stock ODIN package, we have a flash counter reset, do ATT will have no indication you ripped whatsoever. People have returned their Note with the flash counter tripped, and had no issues, but it doesn't hurt to be careful. By using the ODIN package and flash counter reset, your warranty is again valid, so you really have nothing to worry about.

Alright you all have convinced me. Off to read the root stickies/guide.
This is the method I want, correct? Looks like the other one isn't meant for custom roms, just to gain root access and leaves the flash counter at 0.

No need to worry about the flash counter. There's an easy method to reset it and go back completely stock.
My suggestion: flash cwm, root, flash one of the awesome ics roms, and worry about going back to stock later. Totally worth it.
Flapjaxx'a ROM is what I'm currently running and it's up there for the smoothest and best Android experience I've seen through 3 Android phones and many other friends' phones. It's seriously like iOS/WP7 smooth for me. And great battery life. Wouldn't trade my Note for a damn thing. =].

Either is fine. I use non touch because it's what I used on my captivate and infuse and I'm used to it, it has never failed me. I've never used touch, but apparently it's just as stable. It's really a matter of preference add far as I'm concerned and whether you like using the volume and power buttons or your screen.

Ok guys... coming over from the OG Evo 4G... I love this phone so far. I've had it for about 2 days. Everything is great, except it seems that I'm getting some serious lag when coming out of applications or interwebs using the home key. I get 2 or 3 seconds of "loading" and then it fills in. They phone is stock with very little added at this point. I did get the new OTA update right when I activated, so not sure if its an issue with that or not. Is anyone else getting this lag? With the power this phone has, I feel there should be zero lag when doing simple activities... 2 or 3 seconds isn't acceptable. Tried a factory reset... Didn't improve. Any suggestions????
You're experiencing multitasking issues with sense reloads. Rooting can really help with that sort of thing.
Its really too bad you took that OTA, You won't be able to get full S-OFF.
If you aren't the rooting type, changing launchers can help

Thanks for the responses guys... I have rooted/Rom'd my last 2 phones heavily (OG Droid, OG Evo) and am fairly comfortable with it. I guess I just wanted to enjoy this one stock for a while. After running ICS and JB Roms on my old EVO for the last 6 months... It is nice to have everything working at the same time (Netflix, Camera etc...). Plus, Rom'ing seems a little iffy on this Evo so far with reports of actual bricking (yes, I know.. usually user error) and borking Google Wallet. I am decent at this stuff, but I do make my share of mistakes. And seeing as how I bought this phone off eBay (not due for an upgrade), I can't afford to break it. Do you guys think this issue is being addressed by HTC? I hope so......

Clear wallet settings before flashing just to be sure if you're worried about that.
Unlock and root your phone, follow the 1.15 flashing instructions and get cm10, it will feel like a new phone. Well worth any risk (which IMO is low following instructions).

I think something might be wrong with your phone. We've taken a dive into these phones the last couple of weeks. I got an EVO Lte first. It came with the newest update. So I rooted, but no s-off, of course. Running stock ROM. Runs great. No complaints, except the multi-tasking, of course. No lags, though.
MIL decided to move into a smartphone and got the same phone a few days ago, with my help. Left it completely stock and worked on it extensively loading apps, configuring it, etc. I notice zero difference between the phones. Same performance, no lag on either one, etc.
P.S. Wife picked up an S3 on Saturday. I'm in charge of setting it up, too. I expected to be realy wowwed by it. But after a couple of days of playing with it, I think I like the Evo better. I like both phones, but I think I made the right choice for me. It would be nice if HTC was as developer friendly as Samsung, though.
Update: Factory reset fixed the lag... it was acting up still right after I did it, which is when I posted the thread. But, after letting it settle for a day or so, its fine. Awesomeness restored. Thanks for the help though, and when the modding bug hits me, I know where to go.
Sometimes after just flashing a new ROM its a good idea to factory reset first, it gets tested for the device intended and released for others but an image is basically a snapshot of the ROM and everything in it, when you factory restore a new ROM, you really start fresh

I hope you have better luck than I did. The lag came back. So far, minus the last few things that aren't working properly, CM10 is the way to go. It's like a whole new phone. No Lag, smooth as butter, no more waiting for Sense to load, just a much better all around experience. Thanks to Toast and Deck, incredible work!
Still running like a champ... I think the phone was just confused with activation, setup and the evil AirRave that hates all my phones... Factory reset seems to have worked. Trying to hold off on root/rom for now...
