im on at&t 2.1 rom i cleaned it out, now i want to see if i can get the H symble like with custom roms, i heard someone say have to edit the prop file or something but not sure how so im asking
My stock 2.1 SE firmware always had H? What do mean your trying to get H on your phone to get it to work?

You should be getting H on stock 2.1. not just custom ROMS. I do get H on stock.
I wish I could help you out but I have never heard if that issue before. Or seen it posted. If I do come across it, I will send it your way

I think it depends on .xml values and .png icons.
On some versions there are specified values of Mobile Internet Signal and which icon to show on each case.
So to make things clear let's imagine a hypothetical Mobile internet signal scale from 1 to 10 where 1 being the weakest and 10 the strongest signal you can find (G - 4G).
On some ROMs (aka Stock 1.6) there may be this connection between values and icons:
Code:
ICON STRENGTH_SCALE
--------------------------
G 1-4
2G 4-5
3G 5-6
E 6-8
H 8-9 (if I recall correctly this icon actually DOES NOT exist on 1.6)
4G 9-10
Now on another ROM this connection between icons and signal values might be different (or some icons might not exist at all) , let's say stock 2.1:
Code:
ICON STRENGTH_SCALE
--------------------------
G 1-4
2G 4-4.5
3G 4.5-5.5
E 5.5-6
H 6-8.5
4G 8.5-10
So let's say you have a signal that flactuates in an average value of about (hypothetical) 5.5
As you can see on the above examples in this value on 1.6 you would get a 3G icon whereas on 2.1 you would get an E and in some cases (0.5 above) an H.
In short, png statusbar icons do NOT always correspond to the actuall values beacause values DO change from ROM to ROM! Just look at the overall download and upload speed feeling.
Disclaimer Note: All the above theory is *NOT* verified anywhere by anyone. I've done only some theming myself and I'm *NOT* even a dev. So all the above are just assumptions to why you are having this problem. Every single value and ROM refference is also 100% hypothetical to make you understand my point.
Regards,
mr_element.
youre lucky then, because its known that everyone on at&t BUT iphone users are the butt of at&t,s joke they hobble the speed of anything but the iphone. custom roms get around it

The att roms do not have H and are only UMTS signal. You must switch to a generic to not be a second class customer on ATT.
IN the X10 general section is a thread on how to flash 2.1 on a att phone. It still applies to you. I have two x10's and both use the firmware in that thread. If you look for my comments in there you will also find the tweaks to get iphone equivalent speeds as well as correct the NTP_SERVER and dual touch settings.
I would post a link but it's hard from this tapatalk app. Sorry.figured out a way. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1012380

i switched to 2.1 generic for some reason all tweaked it seems quicker then the at&t 2.1 all tweaked go figure
The AT&T 2.1 with 65 bb is slower (show 3G symbol) than the global generic 2.1 with 54bb (shows H symbol). However with Stan S. tweaks it is almost as fast for downloads even though it is 3G in my area. ATT 65 bb has much much better battery life, better reception (I live in a spotty area and reception has improved or it is because Stan S. tweaks to the buildprop), and is smoother than the Global generic 54 bb imo. If the 2.1 Global generic with 65 bb gets released I will switch to to that or just wait for 2.3 to get released.

yes, it's not a bad rom. I answered your PM. But I see you moved on to a generic.
It says UMTS or HSPA in the settings/about phone/status page? If its the HSPA, then don't worry, it's just a display icon if the tweaks give you the same speed.
In older SE firmware for older phones, ATT didn't like to put "H" in the status bar but it was really "H" when it showed 3G. But with the iPhone and some of the other phones proclaiming fast speeds, ATT didn't list the X10 as having HSPA data rates. A ATT service guy I talked to once, said that it was for our own good, as the iPhones were on a different subnet of the network and this kept us from getting bogged down in their traffic. Since I knew that wasn't true, I just smiled.
There is a android.cingular.com for the access points, but why use what the iphone people don't use it..

I was wondering if there was something I could download, or something from the market that i could download that would make my phone say H instead of 3G? My vibrant is not rooted.
I'm wondering why... but there won't be an app to do that. The G E and 3G icons are held in drawables. So unless you make your own update.zip with replaces drawables, I don't that's going to happen.

Why do you want it to display that? The H is generally displayed when you're using HSPA/HSPA+. If you're connected t 3G it will say 3G. If you're connected to Edge, you'll get an E and if you're on the barebones cell network all you get is the number of bars you have.

I think he wants his phone to be like nexus one is, or other android phones are running custom roms, specifically cyanogen mod. With cm, it will jump from 3g to h icon quite often when data is used, does it to me in my area. I get hspa speeds here, but 3g is the only icon displayed. I like it this way more, the constant jump from 3g to hspa in notifications pane is annoying. Maybe he just wants people to see that his phone is on hspa and not 3g, because the icon doesn't change to that on stock rom.
I remember the first time my g1 said h... Had to call a buddy with a g1 and had to find an i*hone to make jealous...

Not true. I have a stock rom on my Vibrant and it does toggle between 3g and hybrid. It just depends on whether or not you have the new radios broadcasting in your area. Some markets have a lot of hybrid running, while many others have little to none. One of my best friends is an RF tech for T-Mo.
Haha "H" doesn't stand for "Hybrid"

No ****, Einstein! It stands for HSDPA, but ask any switch tech and he will tell you its hybrid. Right now in many markets, it is a true hybrid mix of HSDPA and 3g and not explicitly one or the other. Do some research before you criticize someone, retard!

I downloaded the user manual to the vibrant (not the one that comes in the box) and it definitely says that there is a 'H' icon. I wonder why they don't have it displayed when actually connected to a HSDPA+ connection?
This is the text next to the 'H' Icons:
Displays when the 3G+ network connection is active.
Displays when your phone is communicating with the
3G+ network.
What does it mean when there's just a G?
3G means 3G
E means EDGE
H means Hybrid/HSPA or whatever. I was out of town last weekend, and noticed that it was just a G.

if you want your phone to "accurately" tell you if you have hspa coverage then go to settings, about phone, status... its under mobile network type...
I did the same thing with the G, E, and 3G on my g1 to mess around with a friend... doesnt mean I was actually in an hspa area

No no, I understand all this, I didn't mean to come off so naive as I did. I do work for T-Mobile Tech Care and I fully get all that. My phone does get HSPDA in the Settings area in which you spoke. And there's an app called Mobile Signal Widget free on the market that does an amazing job of accurately letting you know what network you are connected to and the strength as well. Anyway, sorry I just wanted to clarify:
I made this because the Vibrant itself will only ever display 3G even when it's HSPDA (not HSPA+). I think it's only fair for people to have the option to show H when they are actually in H coverage. I know when I'm in real 3G areas it will say H, but I live and commute in a highly HSPA+ area, and at home I'm pulling in 5-7mb/s on average even when tethering.
Sorry for the rant, I typed the first post on my phone and I came to spice it up now on my laptop.
Works with onyx. Great job.
Didn't work on AOSpish rom with metamorph.
if understand this correctly, this will show H even though your only on 3G?
not working on axura rom for some reason
Not working with Macnut r12 w/ black goodness theme
Didn't work for me on onyx 4.2 W/ Black froyo theme =[
Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant Onyx 4.2 Ulf Overkill Jfs

I suppose it will depend on your framework-res.apk file since its sucha small edit. You can all just flip flip it using meramorph. I have stock 2.2 so the framework-res im running on is stock.
Its bc the newest roms have drawable-hdpi-v4 folders instead of just drawable-hdpi... You should probably put both in there for compatibility purposes...

EDIT
----
I am going to be testing each and every baseband this week using speedtests from the Mobile Speedtest app, and mobilespeedtest.com. with and w/o the 3g enhance buildprops. I will test these at 3 locations. My home, home work, and wherever I seem to be alot, to see how results change.
so far.
H, 2/5 bars
Location A Atlanta GA
.55a
D:3332 U:1194
.54i
D:2675 U:1259
.58
D:2708 U:1351
--
I am using AT&T, and live not to far from Atlanta.
Originally I bought my phone using only baseband .49, then eventually .52, then stayed on .54 for quite a while. They all seemed to be quite the same, I don't recall when it was x10a or i, but one of them was an x10i baseband, and I always had great service. Even when I was in 2GAtlanta.
For the past week and a half I have had strange issues. Such as being able to call anyone except family members on the same plan, and them not being able to call me. I blame ATT for this. Then J's CM& crashed on me with bb .54, so I spent a day trying to try a new rom and basebands, and the whole day I got bars or no bars. No E, 3G, or H. I am very use to seeing an H, never 3g, and only E when I power control it off.
I reflashed .54a, and went back to wolf's rom, and had problems finding ATT and 3g H service. Eventually I learned to crash sys server, and that night after rexrecoery installing Wolfs rom step by step, i finally got a E, and later that night a few H's, but mostly E's in places I remember getting H speed at. I sat around unable to download apps or browse in the web at the speeds I normally would in those spots.
So i flashed .58, and everything seemed to barely change. More H, but never in my neighborhood, but I read bad reviews, so i wanted to try .55a. So I am on 55A, and now doing speedtests, that are either really high or really low, and I would be sitting in the same spot.
So here are the differences
X10I
GSM850, GSM900, GSM1800, GSM1900, UMTS900, UMTS1700, UMTS2100 HSDPA 7.2 Mbit
X10A
GSM850, GSM900, GSM1800, GSM1900, UMTS800, UMTS850, UMTS1900, UMTS2100
HSDPA 10.2 Mbit
According to my research. Most towers and broadcasters in the U.S. and ATT rely on x10a. I've seen people ask if 3g will work on x10i bb on ATT. As far as i know E and H, do, i'm sure ive seen a 3g pop up.
So I want to collect some answers and information.
1. Should I stay with a x10a baseband as a ATT user in the U.S. If so, what is the preffered baseband to use at the moment
2. What are other ATT users using, and what kind of speed are you getting.
3. Is there a better build.prop setting than what is in the enhanced 3g thread?
1. from what your post says, its recommended but sometimes BB from the X10i works better, it just depends on the ROM and what BB you flash, like me i run .54i and it seems fine but....
2. currently running .54i on Wolfs CM ROM 4.5.7 and i've had some stability issues with internet while tethering on 3G, but i get full bars 100% of the time, i get about 3-4mbps of download speed and upload is 1.5mbps on speedtest
i recently dropped .58i because it shot my battery down like nothing but i had similar download results to .54i but i had no issues, it was stable 100% when i tether
3. as far as i know, no
and to help with your 3G issue, H is basically 3G but faster, if not its probably a replaced icon for 3G, been knowing this since Windows Mobile days

I assumed as Much about H. Seemed to be an international code not seen on stock US phones. Ill try .54i. ty
just keep in mind, .54i you might experience some internet issues unless thats me(due to the heavy rain the day before) if that doesnt work for you i suggest going to .55a or .54a, let me know because im planning on flashing a differen BB sometime tonight, preferably .55a
im on .55a, er was. just flashed .54i, seems to be a little fast. nothign too noticable. what are ways to test this besides speedtest.net?
i might go ahead and flash each one and see which gives me the better stats
you can try http://mobilespeedtest.com on your browser
and i recommend spending at least a full day or two on each baseband to see how it goes for you
and i just flashed .55a and its now stable for tethering and internet performance seems to be a bit better but it might be a placebo effect, and i dont know about battery though, ill report back tomorrow or the day after
I guess i'll report all the information from here to
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=976872
and begin testing every baseband this week whenever i go to work. I actually did multiple speedtests on my way to work where I know I deal with 2G, 3G and 3.5G
fair enough
will be doing test on my own as well
i looked at the thread you provided and it seems .54a seems to be the best, but thats from his test, and also location varies as well, so results might be different for you, compare to his and also some mentioned that Wolfs CM ROM could have 3g problems as well
although i will flash to .54a and test all day tomorrow and next day and back to .55a

.55 seems to be doing a lot better now, got a DL rate of 4000 outside.
I'm not to sure if Wolfs rom has a confirmed 3g problem, it does have a problem connecting/and finding network operator services. I hope he says something about it, because it was working fine on 4.3
Oh well. I just figured if i repeat the same routine and run tests in the same spots at the right time, day weather, and everything thing else exactly the same, results will start to make sense? I think I confused myself
Could someone tell me which radio I should flash? I have a T-Mobile UK Atrix. I have unlocked the bootloader and rooted it. I'm running Mega Orange 1.1 deBlurred + 2.1 update.
Thanks
Wow this rom has awful battery life. Using cyanogenmod now, its way cooler and doesn't use so much battery and my phone seems to have stopped randomly turning off
I've just bought an Atrix myself and have installed CM7. Battery seems to be draining a little faster than I expected under the stock radio included in CM7 and signal strength seems to be lower than on my old Defy. On the Defy, I had full signal at work but I only seem to get 2 bars on the Atrix.
I'm with giffgaff and have just installed the Bell radio linked in the first post of the CM7 thread. Signal strength seems to be the same but I'll have to see if battery drain is less.
I think I may have been spoilt with my undervolted Defy which easily achieved over 2 days usage with light use. Hopefully, I can set up the Atrix to manage the same in due course!

You really need to look at db for signal. My torch 9810 shows full bars at my house and my atrix shows one but the db is within like 3 of one another. The torch just has really over inflated bars. Just something to be aware of.

Yeah, I realise that this could be a possibility. My thinking is that the number of bars on show may relate to similar signal levels as both phones are Motorola devices. That's probably too logical, however!
I think I'll probably check the db levels with my Defy when I find the time - either to set my mind at rest or leave me frustrated with the Atrix reception!
Edit: Nope, reception is definitely worse with the Atrix. I was hoping for better reception due to the larger size of the phone and (I assume) a better aerial.
Testing at my desk, the Atrix has a signal between -103 to -107 dBm with 3 or 4 ASU.
Using the same SIM in my Defy, signal is between -93 and 97 dBm with 8 to 10 ASU.
This isn't too much of a problem here at work or around most of my home town where giffgaff reception is good, but I'm a bit worried I'll be without a signal too often once I'm out of town.
After trying the ATT and Bell radios which both seem to have similar reception, perhaps I need to go looking for others. I wonder if the Orange France Gingerbread will be any better? I'm in the UK but perhaps a radio designed for Europe will be an improvement over one designed for the US.
Does anyone else find the signal bad on their GS2? I have had a lot of Android phones and this one constantly goes through G, 3G, H...although when on 3G i receive nothing data wise until i goes back to G or H.
I have had the following Android phones while living in the same home.
HTC Tattoo. Always H 3-4bars.
HTC Desire. G only (RAREST H in front of my pc) however i think it was faulty looking back.
ZTE Blade. 3-4 bars H.
Moto Defy. 3-4 bars H.
HTC HD2. 1-2 bars H.
Xperia X10i. 3-4 bars H.
HTC Sensation. 3-4 bars H.
Now my SGS2... So as you can see signal is pretty good in my area depending on the device. Is there anything i can do? Do any of you experience weaker data than previous devices? I don't really want to return it!
The phone automatically drops to 3G to save battery when data is not being used, if you have having problems try a different modem, start from the newest and work backwards till you find one that works well for you, newest isn't always best, as modems are region specific.

Think kg2 works well as that's what tmobile sent the phone with. (2.3.3)

If anyone else uses t mobile uk and feels like suggesting one feel free!
