Is there any way to convert 3g to 4g or is a hardware related? thanks
there is no way to get our phones to work with the actual 4g. the hardware in our phones wasn't built to support those speeds.
Its hardware based, you can't.
thanks for your information.

Lol, I know what he "thinks" 4g is, and so do some people on the 3g vibrant section.
The "H" mod that is included with roms is NOT 4g speeds, but you are connected to hspa (or whatever the accurate acronym is) but you're still limited to the Max speed the hardware in your phone supports. Period.

if i was to buy a glaxay s 2, and connect it to t-mobile's service, would it still be possible for me to get the 4G network? just curious
4g? Hell no.
3g? No.

That's something you should ask T-Mobile about. They have a website and everything

Um, what unbranded phone works with tmo-us 3g bands? You have to be able to receive the correct frequencies in order to get 3g, and tmo-us uses non-worldly 3g bands, unlike att.
So, while dumb, it's the reality of the situation.

Nokia n9 is coming with a pentaband radio, so it will work on Tmobile 3g.

Because 4g/LTE is not available everywhere. and there is no boost available, on a system that does not exist yet.....
Many cities are getting these enhanced backhaul improvements, but not everywhere, and certainly not soon enough...
We need true 4g/LTE speed to improve them....g

i guess its not a boost but maybe this will help...(depending on carrier/location/rom..etc)

My fault i didn't clarify I'm using T-Mobile and by 4g i meant HSDPA+ . Sorry. I was hoping
If there was a boost it would help T-Mobile users achieve better speeds. I saw there was a way to force 4G but that was on stock Gb roms i believe.

Thinking of upgrading to this phone and was wondering if the whole thing with the phone not picking up Wimax is software based or something with the hardware. I'm in Saint Louis, MO and it doesn't look like we are getting LTE from sprint anytime soon.

LTE only

Thanks for the response but that did not answer the initial question of whether this is software or hardware issues as to why.

Yes and not to sound indignant but the way I worded the question the knowledge that the phone only picks up LTE is already there. I was asking why that is and if it was a software or hardware issue, not for clarification on the type of network the phone can use.

No problem. Reading back over this thread, are you wanting to know about the LTE connectivity issue, or why an LTE phone won't work on Wimax?
Sent using my HTC EVO LTE and a magic wand
Wanting to know exactly why, if it is a software issue there may be a work around, if it is hardware then obviously there is nothing to be done.

Wimax and LTE are two different types of 4G, and they operate on different frequencies, therefore they aren't compatible with one another. As far as the LTE connectivity issue that many EVO LTE users have complained about, it's not entirely known whether it's a hardware issue, software issue, or both. The thread I provided you the link to above deals with the connectivity issue.
Sent using my HTC EVO LTE and a magic wand
Wimax support requires an entirely different radio chip inside the phone, which the EVO 4G LTE does not have (one of the main reasons being battery life). It will never have Wimax support.
So it is hardware then. Buying the phone next weekend anyways, the 3g speeds here in St Louis aren't that terrible until you go inside a building. Thanks for that confirmation.

Yeah I'm using stock ROM rooted with stock modem. I'm pretty sure T-Mobile is using 1900mhz for LTE and ATT uses 1700. Really digging the late though. Download and upload isn't a big concern but the ping has dropped to about half of what it was. Very happy with T-Mobile. I think the lte will spread quickly like their 4G did.

T-Mobile doesn't use 1900Mhz for LTE, only AWS 1700Mhz.
Regardless the i717 doesn't support LTE over 1900Mhz.

Oh wow this is awesome!!!! Could you please get into your ServiceMode (dial *#0011#) and take a screenshot of your ServiceMode?
Did you change any of your APN settings in order to access LTE or you're running default epc.tmobile.com ?
Thanks!
I'll post a picture of it in service mode around 5pm. I'm at work right now and LTE isnt coming through the building very well. Also to answer your APN question I am indeed running the stock epc.tmobile.com. also thanks for clearing up the frequency bands ok both networks I wasn't quite sure.

I like the techie stuff. For instance, in that screenshot I can see that they're using Band 4 (AWS 1700/2100Mhz), LTE bandwidth is 5Mhz which tells me that the maximum possible download/upload speeds are 37mbps down / 12mbps up in that particular market, EARFCN 2175 means that they're using C block of the AWS spectrum which is 10Mhz slice (5Mhz used for downlink, and 5mhz for uplink).
Most consumers don't care about this kinda stuff, but I do
Thanks again!

4G is not possible in the S3 unless you buy the LTE version.
Make sure you have a plan for 3G and in settings, the network mode is auto.
Also a place where you can get 3G connections.
