ive rooted nook color and am also currently running ViewSonic Gtab with a custom Rom.
Recently bought a thunderbolt so am new to the thunderbolt development ...
i need to find a complete guide to root, what do to before the root .. what to do after the root ... the latest BAMF Rom adn whats the difference between the remix and the ginger version is ...
how to install the ROM ...
so basically a very detailed guide ...
i cant find one here ...
i know a few fast root threads .. shoudl i do that and then install the BAMF Rom ..
like i said .. anything will help me a lot ...

That is the thread for all the TB roms and radios and kernels. I had das bamf remix on mine when I first rooted, and just last night took the plunge into gingeritis. A word of caution, you must flash the leaked gb radio to run any gb roms besides cm7, the radios have bricked tbs badly in some cases, read the disclaimers and pay attention.

i wanna do the BAMF 2.0-5 ... whats the different between the original and the remix?
so i root first ... and then install the rom ... im assuming the kernel comes with the ROM ....
is that the most stable ROm ... or should i stick with 1.7?
sorry for all the questions, but i want to make sure i have everything lined up before i do anything ...
I'm not sure of the differences between the original and the remix, as I have only used 1.7 remix for froyo. The rom you want to download is a gb rom so you need to flash the new leaked MR2 radio which you must do through hboot. Make sure you carefully understand the risks involved with flashing a leaked radio and if you decide to go on then great.
First you download the radio and put it in the root of your SD card, making sure you rename it per thread instructions.
Then you download and flash the gingerbread rom through roms manager. Make sure you do a nandroid backup.
After flashing this roms, the phone will reboot. Pull the battery so that the phone will not reboot into gb with the wrong radio.
Hold the volume down and power keys to go into hboot, flash the radio and your good to go. Don't forget to read the instructions carefully, my instructions are only a summary and are not detailed.
In regards to the kernal, I recommend imoseyon lean kernel for sense. DOWNLOAD THE RIGHT KERNEL for your roms. You don't need to do this, but its nice for overclockibg and undervolting to help with battery life. If you decide to do this read about the speedtweak.sh script carefully.
Or you can just flash a froyo rom without worrying about flashing any radios.

I can't say of all roms how stable they are, but I can say that in the past 24 hours of running Gingeritis, I have had zero issues whatsoever. It also comes with Netflix preinstalled which is also handy. You could go to the alpha build of cyanogen mod 7, which means you don't need to flash a radio, and it will run Netflix its just that you need to look for the apk which is all over the boards.

I put Gingeritis on last night and love having my Netflix back. I tried the latest CM7, and it also runs Netflix, although just a bit jittery. I'm trying the Th3ory ROM's next.
if you guys have used BAMF ( any version 1.7 or above ) and Gingeirits ... can you give me comparisons ...

I'm using BAMF 2.0-5 and it's great. Camera sucks but that's the only problem. I think you can flash the froyo camera and it'll fix it.
You don't need to flash a radio every time. It's separate from the ROM. To backup yours apps/data get Titanium Backup. Buy the full version or donate for a full license.
The only time that you would need to switch radios would be if you were switching between froyo and gingerbread. So as long as you have the GB radio you can run any GB ROM. Just as a warning you might want to be careful when it comes to backing up settings or system apps with TiBu or any other backup app. Sometimes it can cause FC issues that you dont want to deal with. But for apps you can use Astro, Titanium Backup (Pro is worth the $), MyBackup Pro and they should all serve the purpose you are looking for. Have fun.

Hello everyone! I recently began contemplating rooting and doing custom installs for my 959, for something fresh and better performing, also seems my music player has been acting up recently and am really interested in something new along with voodoo sound... If necessary anymore ? Thing is, there are so many ways to root, and there are so many custom roms??? I don't know where to start or what to look for? I just want one of the better, stable, new custom roms available as of this date for the t-959. I search but seems there's no definitive answer? Just a lot of roms haha?
Also when downloading a rom, do I have to download like 30-40-50 kernels and add them? I see all these roms, kernels and update??? Is it just download a rom and that's it, am I making more of it than it should be?
I'm just really noob'ish, really confused, and really, really nervous! I can't afford to brick this phone, but I really want something new.

I fell in love with rom flashing as it greatly improves performance and gives phone a new look. Especially since Vibrant isn't supported anymore.. I can't live without voodoo goodies=) Definitely improves sound.
Negative side of custom roms is it takes up some of your time.. Finding a rom you like, tweaking it.. Not too mention you might brick you phone.
If you decide so.. the most important thing is always read OP...
I used superoneclick to root. I recommend Bionix 1.3.1 as a first rom very stable though a bit outdated. After playing around with the rom, you can try different 2.2 kernels and modems. Then go on to gingerbread roms.=)

Move both to internal sd
Reboot into recovery

Any roms you would recommend s15? I appreciate the starting rom you gave me Trail, I'm looking for something a little more up to date I suppose? I was looking at cm7 or Simply Honey 5.0 Revolution(JVR GB 2.3.4)? Something with voodoo already in it? Something pretty stable with a bit of features. Maybe a lil less lag than stock 2.2, better performance, audio and battery life as well?

Also GPS isn't stable on gingerbread.

I think I'm gonna try the simply honey one or wait till he does a final release?, as for the bootloaders, what do I do or go to there? Also for the kernels, do I need to download one for simply honey? Should I download one for it?

Thanks man, do you mind if I ask which one you would recommend (Odin or Clockwork?)... I stumbled upon this youtube how to called "Custom ROM installation tutorial for the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S (Vibrant)", and was just wondering if I can apply all his methods to SH 5.0? Sorry tried to link it but cannot due to my post count... Oh and when I'm done, how should I proceed with the new talon kernel?
Also if there's a new release of honey or the final release, say I installed this one... Do I have to do it all over again? Same wit kernels? Finally, do I need to revert my unrooted stock 2.2 froyo back to a previous version before gingerbread or any of this?

D bootloader is only flashable by odin..you can read the OP for simply honey, what you need is all in there in d development area..flash kernel that works 4ur phone u decide on that wether bullet or talon..you can use sgs kernel flasher to switch bet the two..

One last question before I do this, I seen SH 5.1, but I seen it was for the i9000? Which one should be used? or the one you may recommend? Im looking for voodoo sound controls.

i reverted back to stock firmware via odin and one click rooted my phone, factory wiped all data and now I remember after I rooted my phone I had unzipped file in my sd card and it told me that i can just delete it after I was done, well i did and then watched a video on clockwork that said not to delete it?
EDIT: Nevermind I fixed it, I just unrooted and rooted again...
So sorry for being a pain, I know you guys have better things to do.

Hello all, I have some questions hopefully someone can help me with. First of all, I'd like to say I'm not a complete newb, or idiot. I have a inc2 which I have rooted and modified myself to my liking based on the stock ota Rom after trying many custom roms. I have a custom kernel set up, a daemon installed, I'm underclocked and undervolted per my settings and govs. I have read threw this forum a lot, I ordered this phone for my wife, should be here in the next few days, I'm excited as I will take it over for a few days playing with it. I have had a Samsung moment before also that I rooted, though long ago. My questions are, obviously, this bootloader is not locked, correct? On my HTC, I s offer and rooted, if I want to upgrade to the newest ota, I just wait for a dev to deox, zip align, and pre root it, then I flash that Rom in clockwork via zip file. On this phone, I should update first, before I root? If Verizon releases a ota, can I just update my phone as if I weren't rooted an retain root and everything, if not, how do I get it? You guys speak of a modem, is that the same as what HTC guys refer to as the radio, and does it need to be flashed seperately as I have to now, or is it included in Samsung roms? Is there any recovery, even the stock one, that can be used to flash and backup that isn't actually on the SD card and not the phone, in case somethin goes wrong with my card I will still be able to get into recovery? Is the fascinate officially on gingerbread? Can I just flash roms through recovery, or do most of them.require this odin thing? What is voodoo? You don't actually have to root the phone. Just flash the rooted Rom of your choice through odin, and then use odin again to flash cwm (if you're using TW roms).
There's no official Gb for the fascinate as of yet, but there are a couple of Gb roms ported from the Mesmerize. Look them up in the forums. Never use the phone button in odin, always pda
By the time Verizon pushes an update somebody will already have it rooted, Su, deodexed, and ready for use. In any case, you can always go back to a completely stock version in less than 10min

I stayed up half the night last night pouring over these and other forums, I have decided I want something like your setup, I know what the PW thing in your signature is, as that's what I want, what are those other things? I guess I'm gonna put the vodoo kernel on there too. And o yeah, I can just take my completely stock phone, odin the PW Rom, and bam, I'm rooted? Do I need to install a gingerbread bootloader first? You can just grab the Odin file for PWGB /w modem and flash that, then flash a CWM file in before starting up the phone so it takes....and you are done. I suggest you start off with a stock kernel(included in the odin file) before you move on to other kernels. It will help you see the differences between the kernels more clearly, which to me are marginal at best...for the time being anyway.

Don't worry about the boot loader, it'll be in the PWGB odin file.
TKSGB 9-27 is the kernel by comradesven
Adrenalineshot 9. 5 is the speed tweak
Honey comb 2. 02is the theme.
Everything you need is in the development section

Laurenop is spot on in his posts...everything you need is included in the pwgb.tar except cwm. Thats why I always recomend new fascinate users to start with this rom. it's easy to install with no hiccups. Prime example is a couple threads down, a new user is trying to flash miui...instead of being patient, learning, doing lots of reading, he starts getting flash happy. By the time I get back on to help him he has impatiently skipped thru provided directions and soft bricks his phone lol... then wants to be spoon fed everything because he is in panic mode since it's not even his phone. Im glad you have taken the time and read up, I have no doubt you will enjoy the fassy! Welcome aboard!!
Thanks guys, I believe that does it for me, the thing I was talking bout as far as cwm bein on SD card was because I read on this forum somewhere it was on there not the phones memory, that's why Rom manager asks you to verify it or somethin, thanks for bein patient with me, now time to get my feet wet, the more I learn the more I help also, I'm not just a leech, I love helping others so you guys time and efforts were not wasted. Don't even attempt using Rom manager. For all intent and purposes is useless on TW roms

I rarely use it on the inc 2, does the fassy come with a recovery and can I just use it to flash and backup stuff instead of clockwork anyways?

I just recently got my Atrix 4G, I'm new to Android. I've done a lot of research relative to custom roms, rooting, kernals. I know how to root, Im sketchy about roms and kernals. I just wanna make my phone ATT stock free. It makes it slow, and I know this device can do so much more. But I just wanna know what I should do. I don't know whether to do these roms:

I do not want to hard brick my new phone.
I would like to know what ROM is the best, I like the gingerblur stability but i like the ICS theme. But Cyanogen is well known for great ROM. Just a mess. What kernal would I use for these specific roms? What do you prefer?

So prior to installing the software, what does that necessarily do? Relative to ROMS and Kernal files. I know I need ROM manager and Titanium backup apps with root for backup reasons and stuff.
First of all you will have to unlock the bootloader to install a recovery manager.
The noob guide will help you a lot. You need to first unlock your bootloader before you do any flashing.
Once that is done a recovery like Clockworkmod Recovery needs to be flashed, I'm pretty sure you can just do this through Rom Manager.
At this point, your options are expanded greatly. For most roms and kernels, you just need to download the rom, and drag and drop it into your internal sd card. After that you can go into recovery via Rom Manager. Once there, wipe your factory settings, cache, and dalvik cache (in advanced). Once this is done, do apply zip from sd card then choose from internal card then navigate to the rom you downloaded. Just make sure you want to do this because it will wipe everything from your phone except what is on your sd cards.
You don't need to mess around with the zip files at all when you download them. Just take the file you downloaded and get it to your sd card. The recovery will do the rest. Same goes with kernels. Just make sure that you have the right one for what rom you're on and flash it in recovery when after you are done setting up your new rom.
As far as roms go it just depends what you want. Right now its the motoblur or cm7 and just read what rom has the features you want the most.
Hopefully this helps a little, this is a basic idea of what you have to do. Flashing roms is not as hard as you think. Just be careful unlocking the bootloader. Anything else just ask away.

If you want webtop and fingerprint scanner, and most the little blur apps that come with the stock phone with more mods and features go with wet dream, its a pretty nice rom
If all you want is webtop and fingerprint scanner and dont care about blur, go with a deblurred rom, I have used darkside and alien roms and they are both great, but I would say darkside has the most extra features. Aura also falls in this category.
If you want the fingerprint scanner then you can choose CM7 Weekly #4, or Neutrino Rom, which is based off of CM7 W#4, however both have some issues with wifi/bluetooth that you might want to read the forums about before flashing, and also Neutrino requires much more additional flashing for extra features, which is a good and a bad thing, good because you don't have to get any features you don't want and bad because you spend more time downloading and flashing zips.

The rom I am using now is Neutrino, and I am enjoying it alot, but you just have to go through the roms and find out about what they feature and don't feature, and of course there are plenty of other roms in the forum that I am completely ignorant about such as MIUI, so just look around and see what you like

android-sdk will allow you to use fast boot and adb and allow phone to communicate to the pc in the event it messes up and you will need fastboot and adb shell to root and unlock the bootloader

As far as the CM9 roms, those aren't meant for noobs, they are in alpha testing and development so they are potentially unstable, so its best to wait for stable releases, or at the very least betas
The rom I am using now is Neutrino, and I am enjoying it alot, but you just have to go through the roms and find out about what they feature and don't feature, and of course there are plenty of other roms in the forum that I am completely ignorant about such as MIUI, so just look around and see what you like
ps when you do use someones rom, be sure to at least hit the "thanks" button at the bottom of their post. They put a lot of time and effort in it and it's always nice to get a thanks

As to what you said and the guy above you, do i HAVE to unlock the bootloader? Im always gonna be on ATT. Can I just root, install the needed apps and install CM7?

Well I believe you're confused, which is understandable.. What you're talking about is unlocking the phone by buying a code to put in so you can use any carriers sim card, you don't need to do that
to unlock the bootloader you just follow the steps in the noob guide for unlocking, that will allow you to install a custom recovery, which, yes, is required for flashing any custom roms
Yes you have to unlock the bootloader, install clockwork mod recovery and then a custom rom. there is some work here, it is all documented in the development section of this forum. As for a rom, I am currently on cm9, however for stability I would suggest cm7 by Turl and team Atrix.
unlocking your bootloader IS different than unlocking the phone to other carriers its 2 differnt things and yes
before a custom rom can be installed the bootloader has to be unlocked

Firstly.. I'll admit that I didn't read as throughly as I probably should have.. I have rooted several phones with the first being the original Motorola Droid and then a couple others.. All fairly tricky but for the most part no big deal... Anyway, I had no idea what S-ON or S-OFF meant nor was it very easy to find information such as this explained in detail..
Anyway, here is where I'm at..
1. Running S-ON, ICS w/ Slim 1.6
2. Phone has a tendency to reboot when it feels like it.. hasn't been too bad but seems to happen more when it's on 4G
3. Phone will NOT allow me to mount the internal storage nor the sd card when I plug into a computer.. like I mean it's not even an option, all I get are charge and internet tethering options..
4. the BIGGEST issue.. I can not tether whatsoever.. I've tried several apps such as Barnacle & PDAnet but none of which work.. I'm sorry I'm just used to the days of my incredible where it was very easy to tether and install ROM's all day long so I guess I was spoiled..
Any help would be appreciated.. the more I read though the more that S-OFF will offer and am I correct to have read that if I do the S-OFF I can turn my phone back to a "locked" status in the boot loader and in turn can also put back to completely stock??

You need to flash the old firmware patch. Should be able to find it in one of the rom threads

So after checking into some things I tried going a different route..
I downloaded Nils' Business ICS 4.0.3 Sense 3.6 (ICS Latest) (Aroma Installer).. followed the instructions.. installed with S-ON etc.. everything seemed fine.. NOW it won't stop rebooting after I configured Gmail & my work E-mail.. I can't boot into the bootloader menu unless I remove the SD card because it tries to flash the PH98IMG.zip as soon as it loads..
SO what to do next?? HBOOT I have the following information

.make sure you install the kernel and the gb firmware patch...these 2 things missing will cause bootloops .
If you have issues ask in Nils thread and I am sure he will help you out. I have been s off and on ics firmware for awhile prior to the aroma install method. Otherwise I could help you out more
Edit: you will want to select the first 3 boxes on the aroma install screen...Rom...kernel...gb firmware patch
Not sure how the installer works after that...but that's a start.
Edit2: you are currently on gb firmware, in the future if you run a gb Rom you will need to flash the gb kernel for the Rom. Any ics based rims will require the ics kernel AND the firmware patch. Without the firmware patch your sd card won't show up properly. The wrong kernel will end up in boot loops. Hope this helps explain things a bit.

Thank you very much for the help... I really thought I was on ICS firmware.. I know this sounds stupid but isn't Android version 4.0.3 ICS??
OH WAIT it just hit me.. So my ROM is 4.0.3 but the kernel is still GB.. I gotcha.. so of course my next question is.. can I upgrade to ICS firmware without S-OFF or is that a requirement???

You can upgrade to ics firmware (via ics ruu). However with s on, you can only run the ruu you are currently on and/or newer versions/leaks. With s off you can run any ruu you like.
Basically you never ran an ics ruu, so your firmware is gingerbread. You can run either gb or ics. With a gingerbread Rom, you would flash Rom and kernel. With ics Roms, you'll need to flash Rom, kernel, and firmware patch.
If you decide to upgrade and run a ics ruu it will upgrade your hboot, radios, and change the mount point for the sd card. The mount point change is the reason for the firmware patch. After running an ics ruu you will have ics firmware. Running a ics Rom, you'll flash Rom and kernel. If you change mind and want to go to a gb Rom, you'll need Rom, kernel, and firmware patch.
So depending on which version or way you go depends on the method of flashing a Rom. Firmware is independent of roms, and the only easy way to change firmware is via a RUU.
Supposedly the ota is coming soon, supposedly the latest leak is the ota, supposedly the s off exploit will not be able to be patched.
I decided to s off...there's many threads with lots of info...so if you decide to go that route take time, read, and read some more. It's not too hard just take your time and don't get frustrated.
Once s off, most roms flash the kernels automatically, saving you a step. You can also run any ruu you want. Ruu is like a factory image that wipes the phone and upgrades radio, etc....basically it will be like you first got the phone and turned it on.
Everyone has different experiences with radios, some are betterfor some, others worse. Overall the new ics firmware seems to be better on battery and network speed for me at least.
There's many ways to proceed....however most roms that are being worked are ics based...and will be more so when the official ics ota hits.

Sure enough!! I went with a GB ROM CleanROM GBE 1.7.5 and it is working perfectly.. I'll decide if I want to move forward with anything else.. I really liked the way the ICS ROMs ran so I man end up moving to that firmware in the future but thank you very much with the explanations that REALLY helped a lot!!

ICS is the way to go, and for it to run properly you should run the latest RUU leak. This will give you the correct firmware. Once you flash the recovery of your choice back onto your phone and re-root, you really should S-off. Amon-Ra is the best initial Recovery choice, because it'll root anything, right there in recovery. S-off simplifies EVERYTHING. From there, you can flash the ICS Rom of your choice, and not have any of the issues you've been reporting.
With S-off, you can flash whatever radio you want, put a different boot-up splash screen on, and the kernel installs automatically when you flash a Rom.
It's a little time consuming, but it isn't difficult. There are threads from some very helpful guys here that explain how to do everything. So when you have some time, I suggest you just go for it. You'll be glad you did.

I'm still a little leary on doing the S-OFF so I have a question on this.. What do you mean by this?? What has to match to be able to run ICS ROM's.. Are you saying the ICS Firmware version needs to match the ICS ROM?
Hi, I successfully flashed my T-mobile Vibrant about twelve months ago to a custom 2.2 Froyo rom (Trigger 3.2 Final). It's a great rom and EVERYTHING works. However lately I've read rave things said about newer roms such as ICS passion. It's been a while and I'm still a noobie at this so my question is:
What is the easiest way to get to ICS passion from my current custom Froyo rom ? Thanks ~ Chris

Its very easy to get ICS running on your vibe. There may be various ways to proceed. I ll give you what I did (AFTER failing for 5-6 times )
Odin back to stock (It may be not necessary. But I started from the beginning which is better AFAIK )
Then stored ICS ROM (ICZen which in my case) and update.zip (CWM) on internal SD
then flashed GB Bootloaders (It also may/ may not necessary. But I did it b/c I already had many failed attempts)
Then flashed CM7 first
After that flashed ICS on top of it
Worked at last for me
NOTE: Please read relevant instructions provided by ROMs b/c flashing one may differ from flashing another.

And I would suggest staying away from Passion. It is based on 4.0.3 and there was a pretty significant code upgread when ICS went to 4.0.4.
IIRC, Passion is the last ROM that still uses 4.0.3 and is probably why it is dead now (but for some reason lives in infamy on YouTube and Google Search).
Haarsh's way works just fine but here is another method as another option too.

mmm... I see a few pitfalls ahead.
Background info from me is that I can't use Odin on my Linux computer. Never really got into Heimdall. I flashed my first rom by downloading the rom zip file and put it on my phone's internal sd card then let clockwork do the rest, ie nandroid backup and flash the rom from the update zip. I'd like to do the same again.
Ok, it's my understanding that anything above 2.2 needs the GB bootloader so the first step is to install that over my Trigger rom. I think Trigger would still run with the GB bootloader at that stage. Next download an update zip of a rom of my choice, put it on my phone's sd, then flash it with Clockwork.
Seems to me that should work or am I missing something I wonder ?
You can flash the GB bootloader. Its backward compatible so it will work with any ROM currently available.
Download the .zip of the ROM you want, and any Gapps if applicable. Then just follow the instructions on page 1 of the ROM (OP).
The usual would be Wipe Data/Factory Reset, Clear Cache, Clear Dalvik. Flash ROM, flash Gapps, restart. The instructions will tell you all you need to know.
If something goes wrong, give us a shout. That's what we're here for.
