I just recently got my Atrix 4G, I'm new to Android. I've done a lot of research relative to custom roms, rooting, kernals. I know how to root, Im sketchy about roms and kernals. I just wanna make my phone ATT stock free. It makes it slow, and I know this device can do so much more. But I just wanna know what I should do. I don't know whether to do these roms:
1: [ics] cm9 by photon dev team. 1/16/12
2: Official cm7 for Atrix Stable Only
3:[rom] cm7-ics-mod2 [11/01/12]
4: [P-rom] Gingerblur v. 4.5
Kernals: by faux123
Gingerbread enhanced stock kernal
Cyanogen 7 enhanced stock kernal
I do not want to hard brick my new phone.
I would like to know what ROM is the best, I like the gingerblur stability but i like the ICS theme. But Cyanogen is well known for great ROM. Just a mess. What kernal would I use for these specific roms? What do you prefer?
first install android-sdk -your pc type
onto your pc include /tools and platform-tools as far as kernals some roms dont like some kernals soo for example of you download and install darkside it has fauxs 1.0 kernal soo dont change it to some strange china built stick with fauxs and you cant go wrong

So prior to installing the software, what does that necessarily do? Relative to ROMS and Kernal files. I know I need ROM manager and Titanium backup apps with root for backup reasons and stuff.
First of all you will have to unlock the bootloader to install a recovery manager.
The noob guide will help you a lot. You need to first unlock your bootloader before you do any flashing.
Once that is done a recovery like Clockworkmod Recovery needs to be flashed, I'm pretty sure you can just do this through Rom Manager.
At this point, your options are expanded greatly. For most roms and kernels, you just need to download the rom, and drag and drop it into your internal sd card. After that you can go into recovery via Rom Manager. Once there, wipe your factory settings, cache, and dalvik cache (in advanced). Once this is done, do apply zip from sd card then choose from internal card then navigate to the rom you downloaded. Just make sure you want to do this because it will wipe everything from your phone except what is on your sd cards.
You don't need to mess around with the zip files at all when you download them. Just take the file you downloaded and get it to your sd card. The recovery will do the rest. Same goes with kernels. Just make sure that you have the right one for what rom you're on and flash it in recovery when after you are done setting up your new rom.
As far as roms go it just depends what you want. Right now its the motoblur or cm7 and just read what rom has the features you want the most.
Hopefully this helps a little, this is a basic idea of what you have to do. Flashing roms is not as hard as you think. Just be careful unlocking the bootloader. Anything else just ask away.

If you want the fingerprint scanner then you can choose CM7 Weekly #4, or Neutrino Rom, which is based off of CM7 W#4, however both have some issues with wifi/bluetooth that you might want to read the forums about before flashing, and also Neutrino requires much more additional flashing for extra features, which is a good and a bad thing, good because you don't have to get any features you don't want and bad because you spend more time downloading and flashing zips.

android-sdk will allow you to use fast boot and adb and allow phone to communicate to the pc in the event it messes up and you will need fastboot and adb shell to root and unlock the bootloader

As to what you said and the guy above you, do i HAVE to unlock the bootloader? Im always gonna be on ATT. Can I just root, install the needed apps and install CM7?

Well I believe you're confused, which is understandable.. What you're talking about is unlocking the phone by buying a code to put in so you can use any carriers sim card, you don't need to do that
to unlock the bootloader you just follow the steps in the noob guide for unlocking, that will allow you to install a custom recovery, which, yes, is required for flashing any custom roms
Yes you have to unlock the bootloader, install clockwork mod recovery and then a custom rom. there is some work here, it is all documented in the development section of this forum. As for a rom, I am currently on cm9, however for stability I would suggest cm7 by Turl and team Atrix.
unlocking your bootloader IS different than unlocking the phone to other carriers its 2 differnt things and yes
before a custom rom can be installed the bootloader has to be unlocked

I have a few questions to ask.
1. How do I keep CWM installed on the phone? I was able to get it to ODIN and have it, but every time it restarts, it's lost.
2. What is the best ROM for this device? I really would like to keep some of the Samsung/Touchwiz elements.
3. What all do I have to know to do anything on here? Let's say... On the Droid X, I had an .apk to one click root. I used ROM Manager to reboot to clockwork and from there I just selected the zip for the ROM I wanted installed. Is there anything special for this device I'll have to do on here? I already have it rooted and I already know I'll have to use ODIN for a lot of things, but I don't really know what it's purpose is I suppose.
4. Is there an easy way to get rid of Bingware/VZW Bloatware?

I have an asnwer to questions #2 and 4. By far the best rom is COMROM 2.0 , which u can find in fascinate development thread. The answer to question 4 is, yes there is an eassy way to get rid of it, all u have to do is flash comrom it gets rid of all the bloatware for you (like I said its the best rom out there)

1. If you are running the stock 2.2 OTA updates from verizon the stock kernel is what is holding your CWM back. It will reinstall the stock recovery every time you reboot.
-The best way to elevate this problem is to flash a new kernel. There are many to choose from and not all will work with your fascinate.
-If you choose to flash Unlimate Kangbang (comm ROM) you can flash a kernel and ROM in one nice little package. See the sticky in the dev forum for more kernels and info.
2. This is really up in the air. Many will say Kangbang (comm ROM) simply because they use it and it is spear headed by a majority of the developers for our phone. There are 5 or 6 options for you to choose from and reading over their features would be best.
-Cyanogen MOD 7 is in the works and currently there are two versions. Koas's version is said to be slightly more buggy then JT's. Neither have fully working camera's as of yet. The word on the street though is that JT may have a fully (don't quote me) working release in the coming weeks. If camera is not a deal breaker check it out.

1. How do I know which kernel will work with my phone? And if it's easier, I would prefer to just shoot a ROM with kernel at the phone instead of installing separately.
2. What 5 or 6 am I looking at? I know about the COMM ROM, but I'm unsure I actually want to head that route due to the fact that I don't want to go COMPLETELY stock. After using this phone for a little bit, I really like some parts of Touchwiz, and I'd prefer not to lose that.

I wouldn't mind Bing if I had a WP7, but this is a Google Experience.... Well, technically, it's not, but you understand what I mean.

Just make sure you backup data on your phone prior to messing with any of this. Really, I would still recommend com rom, ef, or miui wiz.

I don't know what I'm looking for. This forum is too jumbled with thousands of other ROMs and kernels and just everything.
the Evil Fascination rom thread answers a lot of your questions. It includes a kernel, it's voodoo'ed, and its debloated. if you want some of the samsung tw stuff, theres a portion on that thread where you can install it individually.
i'd start off finding a debloated/deodexed stock package and flashing that plus any custom kernels and mods and stuff you may want. Then check out the roms you might want, the two major ones right now being ComRom and CM7, but there are Evil Fascination, Dark Revenge, Superclean, and others which are stable and debloated as well.

So I ended up installing EF, the MIUI, and the CommROM. I was just testing them for 10-15 minutes. So far, I like the CommROM the best, but I think MIUI is close.
I've been using CommROM all day, but I hate the colours. I wish it was more a standard Touchwhiz colour palette instead.
Also, I cannot seem to get the time to show up in the status bar. I unchecked the box in TSM parts and restarted my phone, but it's still not showing up. Is there something special I have to do?
change the text color setting in status bar settings in tsm parts, then reboot. As for the rest of the colors; there are plenty of themes for comrom 2.0

Hello everyone! I recently began contemplating rooting and doing custom installs for my 959, for something fresh and better performing, also seems my music player has been acting up recently and am really interested in something new along with voodoo sound... If necessary anymore ? Thing is, there are so many ways to root, and there are so many custom roms??? I don't know where to start or what to look for? I just want one of the better, stable, new custom roms available as of this date for the t-959. I search but seems there's no definitive answer? Just a lot of roms haha?
Also when downloading a rom, do I have to download like 30-40-50 kernels and add them? I see all these roms, kernels and update??? Is it just download a rom and that's it, am I making more of it than it should be?
I'm just really noob'ish, really confused, and really, really nervous! I can't afford to brick this phone, but I really want something new.

I fell in love with rom flashing as it greatly improves performance and gives phone a new look. Especially since Vibrant isn't supported anymore.. I can't live without voodoo goodies=) Definitely improves sound.
Negative side of custom roms is it takes up some of your time.. Finding a rom you like, tweaking it.. Not too mention you might brick you phone.
If you decide so.. the most important thing is always read OP...
I used superoneclick to root. I recommend Bionix 1.3.1 as a first rom very stable though a bit outdated. After playing around with the rom, you can try different 2.2 kernels and modems. Then go on to gingerbread roms.=)

I would Odin
Then download a ROM (nothing else needed)
Download my option b update.zip
Move both to internal sd
Reboot into recovery
Click reinstall packages
Choose to install zip from sd, select ROM, reboot.

Any roms you would recommend s15? I appreciate the starting rom you gave me Trail, I'm looking for something a little more up to date I suppose? I was looking at cm7 or Simply Honey 5.0 Revolution(JVR GB 2.3.4)? Something with voodoo already in it? Something pretty stable with a bit of features. Maybe a lil less lag than stock 2.2, better performance, audio and battery life as well?

FYI Flashing Gingerbread roms, you will need to flash gingerbread bootloaders to remove rainbows and see recovery ( theres a post on it)
Also GPS isn't stable on gingerbread.

I think I'm gonna try the simply honey one or wait till he does a final release?, as for the bootloaders, what do I do or go to there? Also for the kernels, do I need to download one for simply honey? Should I download one for it?
I seen some roms or kernel can improve wifi and signal? Is that true, if so point me in that direction hahaha...

I stumbled upon this youtube how to called "Custom ROM installation tutorial for the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S (Vibrant)", and was just wondering if I can apply all his methods to SH 5.0? Sorry tried to link it but cannot due to my post count... Oh and when I'm done, how should I proceed with the new talon kernel?
Also if there's a new release of honey or the final release, say I installed this one... Do I have to do it all over again? Same wit kernels? Finally, do I need to revert my unrooted stock 2.2 froyo back to a previous version before gingerbread or any of this?

D bootloader is only flashable by odin..you can read the OP for simply honey, what you need is all in there in d development area..flash kernel that works 4ur phone u decide on that wether bullet or talon..you can use sgs kernel flasher to switch bet the two..

One last question before I do this, I seen SH 5.1, but I seen it was for the i9000? Which one should be used? or the one you may recommend? Im looking for voodoo sound controls.

i reverted back to stock firmware via odin and one click rooted my phone, factory wiped all data and now I remember after I rooted my phone I had unzipped file in my sd card and it told me that i can just delete it after I was done, well i did and then watched a video on clockwork that said not to delete it?
EDIT: Nevermind I fixed it, I just unrooted and rooted again...
So sorry for being a pain, I know you guys have better things to do.

I'm curious if there are big benifits to rooting and custom roms on the AT&t Atrix. I've had a Captivate and GSII and have always loved the speed increase and custimization. With the Atrix seeming so much more risky, are the same benefits there? I want to improve my wife's atrix. Stock is laggy and just boring. Should I take the dive and work on her Atrix? Thanks.

I'm currently on Neutrino's ROM and there is nothing to compare to the stock ROM.
So light, so fast... A new Atrix !
Don't forget to backup the stock ROM right after you install the recovery, after that, there is no risk, you can try all you want.

Yes the benefits ARE there! I know what you mean coming from a Captivate, that thing was slow before mods and such! My Atrix saw a huge improvement with CM7. There is no comparison in boot time, its so fast. Everything else seems to be faster and smoother on CM7 for me than the Blur based ROMs I tried.
It's not any riskier on the atrix, you just need to follow the proper instructions.

As for just following the instructions, I'm a little nervous that I'm not fully understanding what I've read. Using the "noob guide" post, this is what I've gotten so far, so please correct me if I am wrong and jump in doing something dumb. I think my wife is running 4.5.91 Firmware
1) there is some discussion of custum sbf using rsd lite to load them. This doesn't sound like the first step since it seems like I need to unlock and root the phone first. Wrong?
2) use the automated script or flash an sbf w/root and unlock in the method mention in step 1. My hopes would be that the auto script would work as it sounds more user friendly.
3) uses Rommanager to install a "better" cwm.
4) flash a nandriod backup in current state
5) now I'm set to flash any rom.zip from cwm. And flash away to test variuis roms. Jus t never to. A version prior to 4.5.91.

So, after reading through all of the Noob threads and such, I'm lost. There seems to be contradictory information, I'm not sure which phone mine even is (kidding, I know its a SGH-i777) or how to get anything started.
I just came from an ATT Motorola Atrix 2, and I was fairly familiar with that. I had it rooted and running a custom ROM. It seems to me however, that there is a LOT more going on for this phone than the A2.
There's things I don't understand. I know about ClockWorkMod backups, installing .zip's, restoring from backups, rooting (using Super1Click) on my A2.
What is/are ODIN? Modems?
How many of the ROMs are actually ICS?
and is CM9 a nightly or a daily (currently) ?
And I sincerely apologize. I am fully expecting and knowlegdgeable about the 'search bar', FAQs, etc that are going to come my way.
If anyone has a few simple answers, that would be greatly appreciated.

Well, firstly, I hope you know that the only way to get CWM on our phone is to install a custom kernel (can't update CWM on it's own either, the only way to change what version of CWM you have is to install an updated or different custom kernel).
Odin is a PC program built by Samsung for flashing proprietary roms. We've just adapted its use for flashing custom roms too, though only for flashing stock rooted ROMs without bootloaders (usually includes kernels). Heimdall is the equivalent program that also runs on Mac/Linux.
Modems are CWM-flashable zips that change the baseband, deals with signal strength and cellular data speeds (does not affect wifi speeds).
Most of the first page of the Original Android Development section are custom ICS roms: ShoStock2, Phone Bricker, CM, AOKP, Foxhound, etc just to name a few. I have no idea if CM is daily, I don't use it.
The links in the sticky by Red5 at the top of this (and every I777) forum will get you started, especially creepyncrawly's guide.

EDIT: I felt compelled to add this. I don't know how flashing works on an Atrix, but for I777 NEVER FLASH THE BOOTLOADERS (unless you absolutely have to in order to get back to stock, and you know full well what you're doing). That's the one way to risk hardbricking your new phone.

Nightly's are just an automatically compiled ROM. Normally one a day.
There is no CM9 stable for our device yet......and anyways AOKP is better

About CM9 nightly, AFAIK, they compile/build/ and upload during night time (to 2am or 4am). That's why it gets that name.
And basically all of this could have been found using the almighty Google. But you already have your answer from some if the nicer people on the forum.

I couldn't find an answer on the threads. I rooted my at&t last night w entropy512s one click kernel and root. Well I'm new to the phone tech so it took me a while. I now cannot use any of the market Hotspot apps to run my tablet off my s2 wifi. I could before the root and from what I was told it should be easier to do this after rooting. Am I missing something? Is there a special way I have to do it now? I'm so confused.

I'm not familiar with those applications. I don't know any reason they would not work. And it's not clear from your post what exactly the problem is. You mean you can't install them, or that they do not produce a wifi signal even though installed?
Anyway, almost all custom roms include portable wi-fi hotspot, as well as usb tethering and sometimes bluetooth tethering. Since you have rooted, why don't you go ahead and pick a custom rom and put that on. Problem solved.

Yeah, once you have a custom rom, just use the built-in tethering. Works great for tablets.
Yea I can install them, I've tried a few of them and none put out a wifi signal. I don't know what rom I should flash yet. Since I did the entropy512s one click root+ kernel I understand that the kernel is gingerbread, does that mean I need a gingerbread rom? I was hoping for the latest, greatest build. Any guidance is GREATLY appreciated as it took me hour just to root. Lol

Since you used Entropy512's package to root, you have a stock kernel. In order to install custom firmware, you need to first install a custom kernel that contains ClockworkMod Recovery onto your phone. That kernel must be Gingerbread. However, once you have the kernel and CWM installed, you can then flash any firmware you choose, Gingerbread, ICS or JB.

I will give you two pieces of advice:
1: Follow the instructions given to you by Creepy (and any instructions in the OP of ROMS) to the T.
2: Read then read some more. When you're done with that, read it all over again. Afterwards, follow step 2 again. This goes for searching about any issue you may come across.

Good plan. When you get the cwm kernel, do a nandroid backup then pick any rom you like... (cm10 nightly just came out, if you like jellybean)
AOKP by Task650 is another JB alternative.
Which is better you ask? Gonna have to try them both! They both offer stability and great user experience for most who try them. Maybe you're a GB or an ICS kinda guy though!

It really doesn't matter much which kernel you choose for the next step, because it's only on your phone for a short time. Assuming you rooted with the Gingerbread stock plus root package, then you need a custom Gingerbread kernel which has ClockworkMod Recovery. I believe the links in my guide for the kernels are still working links.
The root I did said it was root + kernel. I take it the one with the entropy512 one click root+ kernel doesnt include the cwm. Im sorry im jist trying to understand the whole process not just do it. Alot of what i read doesnt click. Loke when I rooted it took me 6+ hours because I didnt know you want to save the file not open it when downldng it. also I read the deleting the tethermanager2.apk will open wifi/tether. True?

Essentially, yes, but if you're going for custom ROMs, that's not what you want. There are easy ways of getting back to stock if all else fails.
You gotta know what you want first, before you move forward. I know you want tethering to work, and people here have recommended moving to a custom ROM because tethering does not seem to work for you on rooted, stock ROM and stock kernel. So do you want a custom ROM instead (you'll lose some of your current data via that route)? Or do you not care about ROMs and you just want wifi tethering to work now that you're rooted?
Assuming you want just the latter of the two options, I would recommend that you first try a custom kernel (this is different from a custom ROM, but note most custom ROMs include a custom kernel upon install). You mentioned Entropy's Daily Driver Gingerbread kernel, which is a great one. I'd recommend installing it and seeing if that fixes your wifi tethering problem. To install, use Mobile Odin lite version; you can find that apk in Creepy's guide. Download and save the zip from Entropy's DD thread, then extract the zImage file from it (make sure to use the name "zImage", no file extension, important) and move that to your phone via USB mounting. After that, in Mobile Odin lite navigate to the zImage file and flash it; viola, you now have Entropy's custom Gingerbread kernel and stock GB ROM. All custom kernels include ClockworkMod (no other way to get it), so you have that too.
If the custom kernel alone does not fix your wifi tethering problem, then maybe it's time to move to a custom ROM. With CWM, you can flash anything (ROMs, kernels, what have you) much more easily, but we'll get to that after you get the kernel, which is part of the process anyway.
These instructions are all repeated in paragraph 3a of Creepy's guide, and more information is written there, so I would recommend reading it thoroughly so you do understand. I know it's frustrating at first, but you'll get it, and you seem like the type to eventually get it right and understand what you're doing.
