Weird screen borders? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey I've had this "problem" with my both Atrix's. Do you also have it?

I have the same thing, just noticed it.

I'm not really able to tell from the picture. What weird border are you guys talking about?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App

You can see a faint border maybe 3/16" wide around the edge of the screen in the picture. I haven't seen this before on my phone.

No, I don't see it on mine...
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App

Its extremely apparent with dark backgrounds. I can't seem to recall if I had ever seen it before, it's really one of those things that you don't notice at first but once you do see it you can't look past it (if that makes sense).

Could it be an app that doesn't support qHD screens?

Unfortunately not, I see it everywhere- from the home screen to xda.

i have it at the very top of my phone, maybe will post pictures if i feel like it. it gets quite annoying. and you know whats funny. the whole "backlight bleeding" the G2X had was the ONLY reason i stayed away from it. look at what problem our phones are having? LOL.

Am I blind or am I blind! Can't see it, tried brightness 100% white and black background any angle... what are you guys using?

If you guys don't notice it, that's great it doesn't bother you. For me it is particularly apparent only in extreme cases (i use 'screen filter' 25% brightness, and dark backgrounds). However, I am convinced this is on all of our phones (ie: is a characteristic of our display), but is not a defect.

are you using 'screen filter' because the screen is too bright? if so it's a terrible solution to that. use adj brightness instead and set the brightness to 2.

I figured I would post here, since I am having a weird screen border issue as well, but mine is different (I didn't want to clutter with a new thread).
On certain apps there is a border of about 1cm on the left/right/ and bottom of the display. It is only on certain apps (MixZing, Modern Combat, Tetris to name a few). Also, all of the apps in question work fine with no border on MY atrix, it is my brothers that is having the issues. He is on the new Bell update.

It was suggested I try changing the LCD density, but I couldn't get that to help.
The homescreen is fine, and full screen, as is browser, and most apps. Just a few that won't work full screen. Any ideas? Factory reset needed? Any ideas are appreciated,
Thanks in advance

[Q] Black Screen Blotches!

Hi,
I got my S2 a couple days back and was watching a movie in a completely darkroom and noticed that the screen wasn't truly black when the title were playing. I initially thought it was an issue with movie so I tested the screen with a pure black screen (*#0*#) and noticed that the screen glowing a tad lighter than black and I had several black patches on the screen. This is extremely annoying when using apps that have a lot of black or when watching movies. the dark patches and streak is also noticeable in the clock app in the dark grey patterned lower area. I have seen this issue mentioned in another post but there is no definitive answer as to whether this problem can be fixed or goes away after some usage. I would just like to know if I should send this in for replacement? What are my other options?
I also noticed that my 3 day old phone already had slight notification bar burn ins and even my google search widget seems to be burning in to the screen. Honestly I am extremely disappointed with these QC issues and this is my second unit as I had the first replaced for other screen issues.
I'd return it now for a NEW replacement, before the time expires. After a certain timeframe, only repair warranty most likely available, and that will probably take longer.
In some cases, it could be only 1 week.

ya I have a 30 day replacement offer so I guess I will be using that. Hope I'm lucky the third time around.
You may already know this, but;
If you send it back and your phone is rooted, custom rom etc, ensure you flash back stock firmware and get a usb jig to reset the samsung custom flash counter and remove warning triangle.

Edit/update
Im on Gingerbread 2.3.3 XWKF3 (India)
If someone could please try this simple test and let me know their results, I would be very grateful.
Test Procedure:
- Find a completely dark room (easier at night)
- goto phone keypad and dial *#0*#
- tap the button that says Black (Vibration)
- now look directly at the screen for a few seconds and let your eyes adjust
At this point do you see?
a) pure black (cannot distinguish btw bezel and screen),
b) an even mild glow, sort of like a backlight
c) a glow along with patches/blotches of pure black?
I see option (c). Could some of you pls do this test and let me know your results. This problem can also be seen, under the same dark conditions, if the clock app is opened. If you have the same problem I have, then you should see dark patches in the grey area.
I tried out before my last reply, but in dim (not dark) conditions, seemed ok.
Now tried as you suggested, and let my eyes adjust for a few second, I can see what your saying.
Maybe this its part of the super amloed + screen?
So in short , I'll take answer C

Maybe more users realise they have through same (or to a degree) , but i suppose if there is no noticeable difference during day to day use (including movies etc), i wouldn't even bother.
In your case, i'd still go with the return for new. No guarantee though...

Photo
Well here's a photo to better demonstrate my issue. It is a little exaggerated by the camera but still pretty accurate. One can also see that the glow has a reddish tint. It was taken with a DSLR in hi res. You can see just how bad it is. Yes this is not that noticeable if the room isn't really dark but it's pretty damn bad in my room with all the lights out. And thats how I usually read at night. I wouldn't even mind an even glow but the splotches are unacceptable.
Ok your screen is clearly a QC fail. Go and exchange it ASAP. The screen does have a faint glow because it needs to be powered, but it should be a VERY faint and even glow perceptible only in pitch black conditions.

Do you use a screen protector? It can be because of that also. Try taking a screenshot by clicking home and power button then looking at the pic on your pc or laptop.

They're artifacts of the screen so you will never see them on a screenshot.
I don't have spots like the picture posted above but there is a line along the screen's perimeter. Is that it? I am getting it all. Whether to ask for a replacement or not.

touch screen calibration off?

It seems to be off at the top and bottom of the screen. It will click on things above my finger at the top of the screen, but below my finger at the bottom. Always closer to the edge. In the middle is perfect.
Any one else notice this? Should I exchange it?

I wonder if its a widespread problem, or isolated. I'd hate to unroot and return it to end up with the same thing.
Same feelings here. There's not really a definitive guide how to prep this phone for a warranty return. Not sure what that all entails, aside from the obvious.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
I know this is a slightly older thread but I have an update since last.
Returned my phone today 'primarily' because of a dead pixel.
But the screen digitizer is no longer off near the top and bottom. So much better! No more accident double spaces causing a period or accidently turning on caps.
Didn't think it was that annoying until it's gone and I don't have to deal with it anymore.

I decided to keep my phone, and not exchange it. It's not off enough to justify it, and everything else on the phone works perfectly, so I'm just gonna live with it.

Not sure if I'm experiencing the same problem. I dropped a post on another thread but this seems to be more like it..
My example (I'm not as techie I guess) would be:
Tap on engadget app - No problems
Tap on a story - No problems
Tap on the comments - Have to do this repeatedly till it comes up
This isn't the only app or problem obviously but that's the one I notice the most.
I am on the verge of returning it considering it's a 200.00 phone.. I shouldnt have to tap something 4 times to get the item to respond. It's really frustrating. I am rooted, stock only. No custom rom. Thought it could be because I am rooted, running Go EX Launcher, Live wallpaper, etc but even using the stock launcher w no live wallpaper and eliminating some other things it doesnt make a difference. I did try the screen/gyro cal and it made no difference. Please let me know if you guys are having the same issue.. My return period is rapidly coming up..

[MOD] SuperCurio's Voodoo Screen Tune

I was browsing the SGSII i9000 dev threads and found this little jem, which is now supported on the i777. What this will do is enable you to be able to get rid of Sammy's nasty contrast settings and fix banding, which it does beautifully.
All credit's go to supercurio!
You can also download it in market as Voodooscreentuning.
*after doing this and adding the roboto font, I got to say i'm very pleased with the way the SGSII looks. I've been a little upset about the way it was calibrated. Never understood why devices don't come professionally calibrated, tv's out of the box for the matter as well. I suppose they want to exaggerate color saturation , contrast and what not to give it that "pop".
Here is the link to the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1241590
and to thank supercurio, I will honor him like this kid did in memory of steve jobs by shaving your face into my head!

Really? Wow, it's clear as night and day. I'm running unnamed too. When you use the app you can see right there that the gradient is all banded looking while on samsung settings, it is totally obvious when you switch to native.

I did notice that, but I also noticed the sharpness on pictures seemed to have blurred. That may just be a by product to fix the banding. I'm no screen calibrator.
exactly when you watch movies you will notice that their is no more artifacts, because when you artificially add/enhance contrast/sharpness you create noise it becomes apparent when you are watching movies on your phone. So what you see now is a calibrated native experience. I do graphic design and invested a lot of money on sensors to calibrate my monitor and TVs. It makes a world of difference when you get it right. I notice it most when watching a scene where there is a lot of shadows, the blacks don't crush out all the dark grays.

That's something I never really noticed in the first place with movies. Everything just looked crisp.
The app is cool, but I would like a little more control as opposed to 2 buttons. Know what i mean? At any rate, it's free, and you can NEVER hate on free
I agree, more options is probably the one common denominator we share. From his thread this is going to be "huge". That little app took him 4 months of calibrations so I think he is going in the right directions. Curio is the most OCD person I have ever met, which is a good thing in this case! LOL
* I did notice when i got the phone that things looked a little cartoonie! I was still flattered with the screen. I love how everything is a little more natural to the eye.
FYI for those using CM7 on the AT&T SGS2: support will be coming later next week for our device name. Right now it will show as "model not recognized" when you try and run it.
This app is nice. Kudos to SuperCurio

ok I went to a picture in the gallery and I can see some fine adjustment to picture. when you put it in native and close the ap does it stay in native or you have to keep the ap open?
I think it sticks. I just rebooted and it looks like it's still working.
Just because I think Curio, should get all the respect he deserves for his OCD. I am going to shave his face into my head like this kid did in respect for steve jobs!

Yes you hit native. If you notice the gradient it looks less banded. Trust me super curio had done a lot of work on this, he is a legend. If you dont notice anything then you really don't need the app. It works you just aren't that particular about the calibration. SOme people are some people are not.

So do most galaxy s 2s suffer from the black spotting problem?

My phone is great otherwise, and I don't want to risk getting a phone that suffers from something worse. I am still in my 30 day period, so I want to fix any problems while I can.
It doesn't really bother me, and I will probably forget about it soon enough but it was distracting when I first noticed it watching a movie on Netflix.

I would say that my "blobbing" is a little bit worse than what you see there.
Some are worse than others. On my first SGS2, an entire third of the screen was discolored. The second was worse- a fourth was discolored with lines across the screen. The third one, and the one I kept, only has two small spots on the left side.
If it bugs you, go to the store and get the best one they have.

How exactly do you check for it in the store? The fact that it is only noticeable in dark conditions is hard to check for.
I don't think I'm experiencing these black spotty colors. However...
My first SGS2 had some pixel problems. See image below. That line of pixel shows a higher contrast of whatever is displaying on that row of pixels. It only shows up at certain times when the videos or photos show some color or contrast threshold that activates these problem lines of pixels.
My second SGS2 has a soft (almost) black glow at the bottom on landscape (or left side at portrait) against a completely black background only noticeable at night (like when I'm in bed with the bedroom lights off). This doesn't bother me that much. I'm keeping it.

Is anyone having the orange grainy look in the camera. The white balance isn't working and every picture looks like grainy. Please someone tell me this is software related.

Orange tints
The "orange" or "yellowish" tint seems to be a white-balance issue when set to "Auto White Balance". I have seen it on my first sets of pictures, and in other posts and forums. I set it to "Incandescent" and pictures are much better with color. In daylight or indoors. I have NEVER seen it with video...must be software-related. Hopefully patchable.
To me though ISO 200 was not high enough as was recommended...I use ISO 400 if I change it at all. Auto seems ok most of the time.
I will read the photo guide posted above... overall I am happy with the camera once it is "tweaked".

yep it is the fault of the Rezound's retarded auto white balance.... it does not handle indoor/artificial lighting very well.
if you have something like photoshop you should be able to fix the white balance after the fact. you can do this right on the phone with an app called Photo Enhance Pro, but its not free.
For starters, you shouldn't just hit the button and call it good. Give the camera a chance to figure out what it's looking at so it can see what the lighting conditions are.
Tap the brightest and darkest spots in your shot and the Rezound should figure out a decent white balance. If the tint isn't quite right (or is way off), go into settings and adjust the white balance manually. Usually, the fluorescent or incandescent settings will correct most issues.
One more thing: Maybe you inadvertently put something out of whack. Try the 'reset to default' setting in your camera app.
My camera has taken decent shots without messing with any settings. Much better than my incredible.
Yep. Same white balance issues here to.... I wonder if this is a patchable fix.... or something fundamentally wrong with the hardware...
Sent from my Rezound
Wow, I hope they don't issue a change. Many of us (myself included) love the camera just the way it is.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk
Actually what works great for me is incandescent. And move the saturation bar setting down 1. Makes a big difference
Edit: I meant turn white balance to auto, move saturation setting down one. This will eliminate the "orange" tint.

I still like the camera on my Thunderbolt.

The rezound's camera is probably the best camera on any android phone at the moment. Just change around the settings because most of the auto features are off a bit.

Yep. Same white balance issues here to.... I wonder if this is a patchable fix.... or something fundamentally wrong with the hardware...

Seems software related. Generally incandescent gives the most accurate white balance but not always.

Yea its software... Usually HTCs camera app is borked a little.. try a different one from the market maybe?
You guys might want to try Vignette, that works well after you get used to using it.
