[Q] Recording Videos with good audio quality - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
do you know some tricks which can help to record videos with better audio quality? I was last week at a festival and I tried to record some bands. The video quality is fine but the sound ist bull*****.
I will try the next time to close the microphones to get a better quality, but I think it must be something else to get a better audio quality.
Some iPhone videos are really better. Here are two links where you can compare the quality.
I have the camera hack from Potatoman.
I cant post the direct links because I dont have enough posts so plz search yourself on YouTube.
My video:
Rock im Park 2011 Deadmau5 Intro
iPhone video on YouTube:
Deadmau5 Rock im Park 2011 05.06.2011 - Part 4
Thank you for your help!

So the sound is bad both while playing from your phone AND from a PC yes?
Coz as far as I remember Voodoo isn't gonna work on SGII coz of some hardware change...
I'd like a fix around this myself!

Yes the quality is bad on the phone and on the PC.

Look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1104051

Thank you, but I wrote that I am already using this MOD/Camera Hack.

choppy video?

Anyone more think that all the video samples are choppy like the phone can't maintain the framerate and worse in quality than I4?
Looked great to me. Didn't see any chop.

first, i'm see it ok, no double frame & stutter when recording , second, since when the I4 can record at 1080p? if you want to compare, compare with 720p recording for SGS2, i'm sure SGS2 better then I4...
Yea I see some stutters... I dunno if it's just because of early software or youtube compression or whatever. First of all this is 1080p, so you can't really compare it to the iPhone's 720p.
The only way to check for exact output is to download and analyze the file outputed by the phone itself, as youtube is notorious for compressing and decreasing framerates to decrease size.
So far I have seen nothing but great opinions in reviews as far as 1080 recording go...
And as many have said rotten-apple company phone does not do anything better than 720.
They seem fine to me as well. Perhaps check that your Graphics card can play back that resolution.
Not criticizing you, just merely stating the obvious.
Seems awesome to me, never thought a phone could record like that, if you're on Mac or Linux don't forget Flash can sometimes be awful on these OS.
I am on a Mac and it looks fantastic here.
The video quality is smooth and crisp. If you pause it, you can actually clearly see license plates.
Wow, what crappy video from a phone.
If I were you I wouldn't buy it.
Saving the stock for yourself there?

Irony? If not, which phone do you have ?
of course it will be not like canon or nikon whatever cameras
its a smartphone .. with a camera and capable of recording 1080p @30fps .. not bad
dont expect too much from a phone
if u want a pro camera go buy one .. like canon vixia hf20
Yes total sarcasm.
I watched the video and I honestly could not see what the guy is talking about.
The video looks flippin great. And seeing the latest bench marks on the phone I very happy I passed up the Atrix not to mention that the Atrix is locked up tighter than a drum.
Oh, OK. It's always difficult to know whether it's sarcasm or not when it's written and not spoken.

Hmm i dont see any choppy video anywhere! and considering that the video is this good from a pre production model, i cant wait to see what the retail unit can do
There is no denying that the video is choppy. Thats a shame, hope the finished product is better. Some here are saying its only a phone so don't expect too much, but the iphone 4 has smooth video recording and so too does the 3GS. I think we've come to expect better.
just use 720p and you ll be fine...
Remember that these videos have been uploaded to Youtube and been encoded by Google again. If you actually go to Keepvid.com and download the video at full 1080 and watch it in VLC, they look gorgeous.

Thats not the solution.
If they sold the phone as 1080p 30fps, it should be 1080p 30fps that it is SMOOTH video not skippy one.

[Q] Streaming video quality (Hulu, Youtube)

I've noticed that my streaming video quality on the touchpad leaves a lot to be desired. I've talked to my buddy and he told me he hasn't really noticed anything wrong with it on his. Without actually using his Touchpad, I don't know if it's just me being overly anal, or if there is something really wrong with mine.
Does anyone else get a lot of pixelation when watching online videos?
no issues here. quality looks good. with it overclocked the video is smooth and sweet.
I wish there was an hdmi port to stream when im away from home with no access to my ps3 or xbox
they need a netflix app
This is what my youtube quality looks like. This is full screen at 720p.

I think if you follow the tweak guide here:
http://www.pcauthority.com.au/Featu...-tuning-and-speeding-up-your-hp-touchpad.aspx
and install Preware . in there there is a HULU fix that was posted. I downloaded & installed it have fantastic streaming quality now. Cheers
Thanks, but that video I posted has all those tweeks done, and the hulu fix applied. I think I'm just going to unload this thing as the main reason I bought it was for videos and it just isn't up to the level I was expecting.

[Q] Audio Quality Amaze/MT4G

Hey guys I've read some posts, reviews and watched some video samples of the Amaze and from what I can tell..it's true, the audio recording on this phone is horrible.
I wanted to ask if anyone from this forum could compare it to the MT4G?
That's the phone I am currently using now and want to know how does it measure up to the MT4G's audio recording when shooting video.
I ask because I record a lot of videos with my MT4G and it's important that the audio quality on the Amaze isn't less than my phone.
1080p would be awesome to have (mine has 720p) but I don't want to sacrifice audio quality.
So with that being said, could anyone tell me from personal experience whether it's worse or better when compared to MT4G?
Thanks a lot.
I would ask if you are so concerned for professional reasons and then I realized a pro would use a real camera...
Not trying to be a prick or anything. Just curious.
What is with the concern of how well the audio is recorded off your phones camera?

Because I don't own a point and shoot camera so I rely on my phone to do all the recording.
I have two kids, 5 and 4, and I record them all day, everyday.
So yeah I just don't want to sacrifice the audio quality for better video quality.
Cause if you have kids that young you should know the audio is the most important part!! They say some of the craziest things. Lol.
Anyway, thanks for asking though. I don't mind explaining. Do you have any thoughts here?

If you want good audio quality on a phone camcorder, you're not going to have any luck with HTC, put simply. The Amaze is a fantastic phone and video quality is among the best out there, but audio has never been HTCs strong point. If you're looking for great audio, I'd suggest looking into a Motorola device, though T-Mobile really doesnt support Moto anymore it seems. If you do go with Motorola, just know that video quality will not be the best on most, at least from what I've seen. The Razr looks solid on both fronts. Then there's the iPhone 4S, which undoubtedly has the best of both worlds. Either way, I'll stick with the Amaze. I love it in every way.

AWESOME!!!! Way better answer than anything I could think of. I definitely see where you are coming from. Audio would be very important.
Not that I have taken a lot of video with mine yet but I have to say it does not sound any better/worse than my iPhone's ever did. Video is a ****load better though

So it's not like a horrible difference yeah? Well that's good.
I mean my biggest thing was whether it'll be worse than my current phone.
myTouch 4G.
That's really what I'm trying to get at.
I don't have a problem with my phone's current audio recording.
I just don't want to be downgrading. =P

I can understand what you're saying, but my thing was just whether it's an audio downgrade from my current phone, the HTC myTouch 4G.
That's all. But thank you for the suggestions and yeah I'm not a big fan of Moto phones either.
Thank you.
What about Music quality?

The audio quality is very good. But not stellar. Much depends on the source. If you use badly compressed mp3 files and cheap earbuds don't expect much. The phone can play .flac files if you install a 3rd party player like PowerAMP. That combined with a good set of headphones (I'm using Klipsch, which are also very good but not stellar) then the audio quality is more than adequate.

Why don't you take you're kids to a t-mobile and take some test videos too compare? Seems Luke that would be the easiest thing for you to do and you would not have to rely on any the opinion of someone else.

As far as recording, the audio is just as good as my vibrant...take that as you may--I am not a huge video guy. Plus, once you record, you can edit the audio on your pc.
PowerAmp is the single, most important app for me...in the car, at work, everywhere, the output is amazing.

Beats Audio
Do you know if Beats Audio will be in the Amaze anytime soon or in the dev posts?
audio seem ok to me...I had the SGS2 which only provides MONO audio, and audio quality seemed good . This phone provides mono and Stereo so I played around with it and when I put it on mono audio the sound quality is much better, but then again you get mono....So It might have something to do with the extra microphones trying to pick up extra sound and cutting out the background noise....Personally I feel the sound on the Amaze is much more clear with high treble, than the SGS2, is the only phone I can compare it to. sound on SGS2 was muffled a little. also the speakerphone on the back and front of the HTC device sound much less muffled than My SGS2, I have no experience with motrola or any other brank of phone.

I installed a app from the marketplace called Volume+, it was less than 2 dollars. But you can go to the dev website and download it for free. It boost up the volume from the audio playing from the loudspeaker and headset. I don't know if it will boost the recorded incoming audio. To me I had the MT4G rooted with a sense 3.0 Rom and I already love this amaze. As long as your hand doesn't block the microphones on the phone it is fine. Plus for 15 dollars you can buy the adapter to hook up to your tv and watch the glorious 1080p via HDMI. Also my Amaze is all stock. Plus the reception and call quality is very good.

This may seem odd but I found that, to me at least, it sounds better with the "stereo recording" off. That's how my MT4G videos sound.
Anyway, volume is not the problem here. It's sound quality.
I get the best recording with an app called rec forge, mono, wav and 22khz sample rate. The stereo recording does not improve the fidelity of the sound. I have yet to try an external Mic.

recommendation for viewpad blu ray watching

I know it's a bad idea to put those blu ray or dvd ripping stuff up here, but i also wanna you guys who wanna do this but don't know how can get a clear understanding and learn some tips for blu ray ripping thing. So my point is, whenever you do this blu ray ripping thing, you do it for private use, you only watch them on your viewpad and will never spread it to others or upload them on to the internet! God bless
Actually i learnt this by watching a youtube video accidently. mp4 is the best video format for viewpad since it has good picture quality and not that big video size. the video is about rip blu ray disc to multiple video formats like mkv, mp4 and other things. Then i google it and download a free version to take a look, it's really easy in use if you follow the youtube video, i mean this guy who made the video is a genius. Being honest, i will never be able to do it without watching the video.
And now i'm gonna post the here, hope it may help
http://www.leawo.com/knowledge/bluray-to-viewpad.html
i thought so too.
since i've tried to play .mkv in mobo player, and its too laggy to watch.
alternatively, you can use any converter you like.
as for me, i use Allok video to mp4 converter, set the resolution you want (best at 800x600) for viewpad7 and dont forget to setup the audio quality (which is best at 128 kbps or smaller) and you can set the audio volume too up to 200 % from the original file
HD video is useless on our device, 800x480 best resolution for our screen, and higher res. doesnt mean quality. Device can't give you more dpi, than it have.
Use CUDA converters, if your videocard compatible. It's faster, than others.

crackling sound while playing video

I just run into a problem a couple times now, and I was wondering, if someone else had the same problem...
I have videos / Podcasts that seem to have a very annoying crackle noise in it... video does not stodder... or anything, what would indicate bad playback or something... also it does not seem to be only if volume is set high... i do use my headphones with it...
Now in the begginning i thought i might just be a bad recorded show.... but this morning i heard it with a different show... and its very annoying... now this still might be a coincident... I will see if the video plays fine on my PC... but until then I was just wondering if anyone else have issues with crackleing sound while video playback...
The only time I had this was during playback of AAC 5.1 on video (MKV) files. If you have this in ALL your apps, I wonder if you have a faulty phone? Sounds like a weird one!
You said you use headphones, so the problem occurs with AND without using the 3.5mm jack w/ headphones?
Well i actually havnt tried without the headphones... But if would be odd if it had anything to do with that since some videos go flawless with them.... The only 2 video players I have is rock player and podcast player dogcatcher.... Any other suggestions on players?
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
See if it happens on headphones too. If it is only through speakers, possible defective speakers? If it is both, it could just be the media or perhaps something with the audio decoder?
I am no expert so take my advice with a grain of salt.
Also, try DicePlayer and see if that works.
Download Pandora or Slacker radio and see if it happens through that, too. If it does, there's definitely something wrong!!
Ok.... I checked the file its a quick time mov file.... It never happens so far with my radio app.... Also only happens with one or two video podcast with dogcatcher.... They problem so far o ly occurred with the headphones... Will try later without them...
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
Do you know if your podcasts are 5.1 channel? I wouldn't think they would be, but if they're 5.1 and AAC that would align with my problem.
Tried dice player.... Even though it's nice same problem...
I might make a video so you have a idea.... How is the best way to do that? I any apps out there that record your cellphone screen with audio?

this is sooo funny i wanted to state the exacte same thing just started playing max payne myself... and wondered is that is part of the game or that darn crackleing again... so any idea where that comes from !???
I wish i would know if that is a issue of a couple of phones... or ALL phones... In other words if i bring it back and get it exchanged will i have the same issue!?

If you use Linux you can convert it to an MPG file using ffmpeg command, it will lower the file size, keep the aspect ratio and quality; that get's rid of the cracking noise in my case.
No, I I am a windows guy..... Would I've to know what the problem is..... So re encoding might help with video files.... But what do I do with games.... Like mentioned.... There must be a better solution, and or?

I have this same issue, especially with Max Payne and Grand Theft Auto 3.
I haven't had the cracking else where, though.
It seems hit or miss so I may take my phone to sprint to try to get it replaced.
Well i would like to know if the hardware is what it is or if this problem is with all EVO ltes....
Sent from my EVO LTE Form tapa talk 2
I've scoured the web, but it seems 50/50 that some people do, some people don't have the issue, so I feel like it's most likely faulty hardware (or people are just putting up with crappy audio, but I find that hard to believe, as we all pay so much for these devices they should work properly, especially with beats audio premium advertisements).
I'll let you know what I find when I go in to the store...
i have it crackle when playing 720p video on my evo. the only video i have is an mp4 and it crackles in every video player except for dice player. but now that i think about it, could it be due to the beats audio eq? im gonna try it without beats and report back.
edit: nope it isn't beats. turned it on and off and tested playing on speaker and through headphones on both and it made no difference. i might go as far as to say that this is a kernel issue since that has a lot to do with video playback. and considering this is a new phone i should be worked out in the future (given that it is in fact a kernel issue)
edit edit: it may also be worth noting that mx player and dice player seem to have no problem playing video as long as you use the software decoding instead of hardware decoding

I tried the same thing, turning beats audio on/off with no change. I haven't played around with video though. I'll give that a shot now. If I run into a problem there and we can't fix it, then this phone's getting replaced for sure. That's not acceptable...

also keep in mind that some of the apps may need so changing in order to work. i have seen quite a few apps in the market that after they updated say in the description "evo 4g lte users please uninstall and reinstall to clear up some problems"
so i would give it some time to see if it clears. and like i said i don't think its the phone but rather the kernel because if you play a youtube video or play music through the speaker, its crystal clear. if it was the phones speaker that was damaged then you would hear it all the time rather then in a few apps and while playing movies.

True, good point.
I was worried that perhaps it's some kind of interplay between the gpu and audio systems, as it was predominantly in games.
