NVFLASH quick questions. - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, I am new to all this NVflash stuff. I followed the steps of NVFlash so that I could install a Honeycomb rom. Now I want to change to another rom but dont wanna brick my tablet so here are my questions.
What exactly is NVFlash doing? Is it a program? Is it an automatic backup? Is it a hidden recovery? I am totally confused on what it does for me.
Do I always have to flash back to a stock rom before I go to another rom?
Im sorry for the noobish questions but I have been flashing since back in the Diamond era and things are so much simpler on phones. I just boot into recovery and flash a rom. Simple. Thanks for your help.

No, you do not have to flash back to stock ROM before you go to another ROM. The version of clockwork mod will determine if you need to flash back to stock--i.e. if you have CW_Mod 1.1 and you are wanting to switch to another 1.1 ROM, almost all will require a simple flash via CW_Mod. If you have CW_Mod 1.2 and want to use a 1.1 ROM, the *recommendation* is to flash back to CW_Mod 1.1 and vice versa. From what little time I've had to read about the differences betwixt stock 3588 and 4349, the differences seem significant enough. The newest ROM by LSB (LinuxBoxSolution) does give some insight to the differences. It might be worth a read (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113656). I don't claim to be an expert but I think it is worth heeding when ROM release announcements add specific emphasis to the version of CW_Mod. As long as the ROM matches the CW_Mod version, you can flash it without have to flash back to stock.
Hope this helps

Ahh... So 1.1 and 1.2 are refering to the cwm recovery I am running. So as long as I flash a rom built for 1.2, I should be fine. Thanks.

[Q] How to create a flash-able/Odin of my New T959UVJI6 Samsung Vibrant.

How do you create a flash-able/Odin of my New T959UVJI6 Samsung Vibrant?
This will be my back up (FLASH /ODIN), because there will be some Fresh ROMS that will be released soon, and I want to make the Jump, but I have to at least have a back up.
Knowing how to create this image (or what ever it is called) will help me share more to this community, I would be more than happy to share this image here, and to test more roms, apks, kernals, or patches & updates knowing that I am free to Q.A. the releases if I had a stock image that I could flash or odin at the end of the week or at the end of the test cycle.
Model Number T959UVJI6
Firmware Version: 2.1-update1
Kernel Version: 2.6.29
Build Number: ECLAIR.UVJI6
(I have searched numerous times and the search is not available each time)
I don't think it's possible to create a custom ODIN complete flashable backup yet. It's been worked on but so far not successful -
Here's the original thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794425
There are stock images for both 2.1 and 2.2 that can be flashed via ODIN, though. All are easily found in the stickies.

Hay Shrivel,
Thanks for the reply, I get the stickies - they are invaluable to the members here.
But most of the stuff out there are at best still in beta, buggy and were configured for or from another user and still needs tweaking.
My phone is like a virgin, and I really don't want to flash her because once you flash, it can become extremely challenging to back to stock.
There is a lot to say about stock, yea it's slow and not as robust, but it is free of bugs.

Getting back to stock is really easy - you just have to make sure you can get into download mode reliably and you have the proper drivers on your PC. It's getting back to the current state of your phone that's the tough part (well, not THAT tough, if you know the steps. But not yet possible in a single step.)

My Stock firmware is 2.1

I'm new to this rom stuff guys i read around and still can't seem to find the answer...
since the Vibrant stock fw is 2.1-Update 1
DO i have to download a rom that's 2.1?
or can i just go to 2.2.1 or 2.2?
so your on 2.1update-1 thing?
and want to get a 2.2 or 2.2.1?
Just root your phone, get rom manager, flash clockwork recovery, then flash roms. there's guides on this, their stickied.
Find em' im on phone
what I'm trying to say is do i need to be on firmware 2.2 to run roms 2.2 etc.
No. Root/rom manager/clockwork/pick your rom/flash per devs instructions. Literally that simple and almost as fast as you reading this.
The rom will wipe and flash over any existing firmware you have no matter what.
Oh ok thanks <3!

Few Questions

Hey,
I have recently flashed and installed a custom CM7 rom to my Galaxy 5 but i am not happy with the results and i wish to go back to Stock 2.2- i stupidly didnt create a backup, so can anyone point me in the right direction on how to get back to stock, i am completely new to this kind of stuff so please try and keep it simple!
Thanks
ok, what method did you use to flash this rom?
You may have to use a different way to flash back to 2.2.
This post : http://www.madteam.co/forum/development/samsung-galaxy-5(gt-i5500)-rom-archive/ : has all the roms for our phone, so if you scroll down, after the third black line, you will see Official Roms's.
Look under that and you will see different regions 2.2 roms.
If you need any help with the flashing, just ask here
Thanks a bunch.
I flashed my rom using Odin to install Clockworkmod v4 then installed CM7 vis Clockworkmod.
Il have a read of that thread now but im pretty new to this so i may need some help

[Q] rooting help!

sorry for posting thiss but i cannot find an answer anywhere guys. Okay this might be a dumb question but my fascinate came stock with 2.1, and i have updated to 2.2 and then now running 2.3 do i have to flash it all the way back to 2.1 for roms? or is there a way i can root with my un-stock 2.3?
You don't need to root to flash roms.
The only reason you would root at this point, is ONLY if you where going to stay with the stock ROM and wanted to remove software that came pre-installed.
Flash whatever ROM you want, you can flash no matter what version you are on, 2.1, 2.2, or 2.3. Just make sure you do your homework, and learn about what you are flashing first, and if there are any other necessary steps to flash.
ooohh okay so if i root thats only if im going to 2.1 and going to stay there?
thnx alot answered a question that no one else has for me
All custom roms will come pre-rooted. So all you need to do is flash the appropriate recovery, and flash a rom. Your phone will be rooted.

Future upgrade to ICS from CustomROM

I don't know very well, and in deep, all this steps to upgrade to a CustomROM:
changing file sistem to ext4
deoxing
aligning
changing kernel
changing bootloader
...and I'm a bit afraid to try a CustomROM (CM7 or CM9) for all these changes made by the ROM to the phone.
Using a CustomROM (when ICS will come out officially from Motorola) I think it will be impossibile use OTA upgrade, right?
So: how we will upgrade officially to fully official ICS ROM?
(I'm a Windows programmer so I can understand your technical answers)

To be able to install a custom rom you need to do the following:
1. Root phone
2. Unlock bootloader
3. Install custom recovery
4. Install custom rom
There is a guide for beginners on how to do all of them:
Thanks for the answer, but I was interested in "how to install official ICS, when it will be avaiable, if I'm already using CM7 or CM9 CustomROM with all those changes like Ext4, deoxed, etc..."
Though there may be better ways, if I was faced with the scenario you are discussing, I would flash the newest "stock rom" like Nottachtrix (keeping is ext3 and with a stock kernel) to my phone before flashing a stock ICS fruitcake, which someone will likely post.
The purpose of the intermediate flash, as I see it, would be to return the phone to the state nearest to stock (kernel, ext3, etc.) before applying an upgrade that may rely on stock variables in order to properly "take". Making your own fruitcake from the OTA update files is not remarkably difficult either, but I am sure there will be at least a few devs left making the official ICS release even better. I am eager to see what changes Moto makes to webtop for the Atrix, or if the webtop changes are just for newer models.
Good luck!

Lol…sorry misunderstood you . From what I know going back to stock is risky business. There are some people who did go back using fruitcake. I think the previous post gives a good method.
Ok, thanks.
I'll stay with Stock until I can try official ICS....if official ICS is not very good, I'll consider to use a CustomROM at the end
