Root Question

Hi
I come from Htc Hero and been a flash junkie on that but have a few questions about the SGS2 as it seems a bit different
1. Do you need a SD card to root ?
2. Have heard about ODIN.. If I just want to update my firmware / baseband can I do it through ODIN without rooting? Again do I need SD card? and How do I back up My Original Stock Rom In case I wanna Roll Back .
3. Download link for ODIN please
I am quiet happy with the stock rom and really don't feel the need to root, but I would want to upgrade my baseband to a newer one if possible as I have kinda dodgey signal ( It Yoyo's between E, G, H and H+ all within a half mile radius)
Am on vodafone Uk stock Rom
Base Band Version I9100BUKE1
Kernel Version - 2.6.35.7-I9100BUKE1- [email protected] #2
I have found the below two links any others which would benefit me?

Unbraded firmware

Dear forum users,
First of all I would like to thak you all for the help and support, this site has been my source of information for a long time.
Unfortunatelly I do not have enough experience and knowledge to contribute to this forum.
Anyways... I bought a brand new Samsung Galaxy S2, the phone is amazing it came unlocked by the carrier but it has a branded firmware, and I am looking for an unbraded version.
Where can I find the unbraded firmware? How can I tell if it is compatible with vivo/Brasil phone?
Please help and thank you all for your support.

If you are on Stock ROM then Kies should allow you to install the latest official KF3 firmware. Anyway, you can flash it via Odin too, here is the firmware link,

[Q] Requesting DXKG3 stock firmware and kernel

Hi,
I want to get back to stock 2.3.3 on my S2 for warranty issues. I've figured DXKG3 firmware and kernel should be the right set (from "[ROM+Guide]Official i9100 Firmwares KG, KH, KI, KJ, KK1/2/5, KL1/2/3, LA2,4 Download").
However the download links are down for the files and I can't find any other links. I'm also a new user so I can't post there to request. Does anybody have any links for the DXKG3 stock firmware and kernel?
Thank you.
Search Sammobile.com

[Q] Downgrade firmware from Australian carrier Jellybean to UK ICS?

Hi Guys
I'm a newbie here... I've done thorough searches here, but no-one's posted a query like I seem to have?!
I purchased an Australian SGS3 I9300 on the Optus network from the UK eBay site (this wasn't mentioned in the auction, so I expected to receive a full UK firmware/spec phone), it comes with Jellybean which I'm not a massive fan of...
Am I able to downgrade the australian 4.1.2 Jellybean firmware, to either an international or UK (O2 Telefonica) ICS 4.0 (which I love)?
Is it just a general download of the international firmware from Sammobile and flash through Odin?
Any help and advise appreciated

I would root the phone first and make a backup of your current firmware. Then just get the ICS FW you want to flash and do it through odin.

Thanks for your reply!
I was 'hoping' not to root it, and just do it as a general firmware download?

wouldn't you rather have a backup just in case though? you can always use triangle away and then once you flash with odin you will be back to stock anyway!
Get a copy of the firmware that is currently on the phone or at least make a note of it .
Then via Odin flash a stock UK rom from stock rom thread or from sammobile.com .

Thanks for your reply guys - very helpful
I'm going to make the backup and install the new (older) firmware
